Victor Shadawn Perry, also known as “Trig Shawty,” was born in Miami, Florida on August 11, 1984. Despite being the second oldest of three children, he developed an independent passion for music at an early age. In 1994, artists such as LL Cool J, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube and others inspired him to start writing his own lyrics. His passion for music grew stronger.

“I would put on headphones and lip-sync to my favorite rappers’ music in the living room of my house and at family gatherings,” says Trig.

During these early years he was formerly known by his childhood nickname, “Shorty.” He later began creating lyrics under the name “Triggah” which was deemed unto him by a neighborhood friend. This friend once likened Trig’s lyrics to that of a blasting gun, claiming that “a gun can’t shoot without a trigger.” Trig eventually removed the ‘er’ and added the ‘ah’ due to the dialect used by many of those that spoke of his name. Finally, the name “Triggah” evolved into the name “Trig Shawty” as a combination of his two nicknames and to also appeal to a more universal and commercial audience.

Trig began writing raps at 11 years old but had never recorded his own songs. During high school, Trig had created a buzz around campus by free styling with friends on the basketball court during P.E. and lunch. In addition to this, he would participate in rap battles around his neighborhood.

Trig did not seriously consider his music career an official business venture until he became a father at the age of 19.

“When my daughter was born my life suddenly had a purpose,” says Trig.

“A year later I had another daughter; the focus wasn’t just on me anymore. The focus was on spending time with my kids and making sure I could provide them with a great life.”

He linked up with his brother Tazz, of Tazz Productions, and a friend by the name of Dye-ris to form the rap group Dade County Boyz. Tazz gracefully bowed out of his rap career only to continue his artistry in the form of making hip-hop instrumentals or ‘beats.’ Triggah and Dye-ris continued on with the rap act but it soon came to an end as well. The two artists had varied visions and goals as well as clashing rap styles, so they parted ways.

“We were two people who really didn’t agree on much; we only recorded one song together. We spent the rest of the time arguing and disagreeing with each other.” says Trig.

Trig’s journey is just beginning and despite the past drama, setbacks, and disappointments, this future superstar believes he’s exactly where he needs to be; en route to becoming a household name.

“I wouldn’t change the way any of this happened,” he maintains. “I learned so much from it all, and it only made me even hungrier to do what it is I came to do.”
