How to Maintain a Professional Carpet Cleaning
After having your carpets professionally steam cleaned, you want to keep them looking clean and smelling fresh for as long as possible. We know it can be a challenge to keep your carpets in just-cleaned condition and avoid the stains and odors you just got rid of. That’s why our Durham carpet cleaning team is sharing some tips for maintaining your professionally cleaned carpet.
The first thing you need to do is make sure you don’t walk on damp carpet. One, it’s slippery, and you could fall. Two, dirt and oil will transfer more easily to your freshly cleaned carpet. Three, you want your carpet fibers to stay upright so they can dry easily. Walking flattens them down and extends the drying time, which can lead to musty smells. Your carpet cleaning team will tell you how long to wait before walking, but it will be a minimum of two to four hours.
Speed Up Drying Time for Just-Cleaned Carpet
The sooner your carpet dries, the better off it will be. Not only does this allow you to get back to normal faster, but as we mentioned, the longer it stays damp, the more likely it is to develop musty odors and attract dust and allergens. The best way to speed up the process is to:
Increase the Temperature of Your Home
When the air is warmer, it can absorb moisture more easily, allowing the water left in the carpet to evaporate faster. The optimal temperature to speed up dry time is around 75 degrees.
Increase Air Flow Through Your Home
The air in your home can become saturated due to the vapor evaporating from the carpet. When it gets too humid, the carpet will take longer to dry. You can combat this and make your home more comfortable by boosting the airflow. Open windows, turn on any fans, and bring in portable fans to reduce humidity quickly.
Wear Socks or Slippers Around the House
You want to avoid wearing shoes on the carpet because you don’t want to track in dirt, mud, or residues that could lead to stains and odors. Also, because the tread on shoes is heavier than our feet, it can wear out the carpet much faster, especially in high-traffic areas.
You also want to avoid walking on carpets with bare feet! The natural oils on your skin can transfer to the carpet. Any oils or residues on carpet fibers can attract dirt and allergens, making your carpets dirty more quickly.
Keeping your carpeting free of dirt, dander, and pollutants is important to maintaining your carpets after having them professionally cleaned. Vacuuming removes the allergens that harm your health, and also, it prevents you from pressing dirt and dust further into the carpet fibers making them harder to get rid of and leading to odors. Don’t just wait until your carpets are dirty, you should vacuum frequently, at least every few days, depending on the amount of traffic and pets you have. To prevent odors, sprinkle baking soda on your carpets before you vacuum.
No matter how careful you are, spills happen. Fortunately, with the right care, you can prevent unsightly stains.
● Clean all spills, even water, immediately, using a clean white towel or paper towels.
● Always blot the liquid to soak it into the towels. Rubbing at the stain only pushes it further into the carpet fibers.
● Use clean water first on a spot to try and remove it.
● A few drops of dishwasher detergent stirred into water and used to blot the area removes a majority of everyday stains. (Club soda works best for wine and peroxide is best for blood)
● Avoid using harsh chemicals unless directed by your carpet cleaning professionals.
