AS I SIT IN MY SUITE IN DUBAI (BY THE WAY ITS 5:30 AM), I THOUGHT IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT I WRITE THIS EVEN THO IM SURE NIGGAS GONE HAVE ALOT TO SAY ABOUT IT BUT IT IS WHAT IT IZ .LAST NIGHT THE BET HIPHOP AWARDS AIRED,I WAS READING TWITTER FROM THE PLANE AND 85 IF NOT 90 PERCENT OF THE COMMENTS WERE BASHING IT.AT FIRST I WAS LIKE WHATEVA, BUT THEN I STARTED SEEING PEOPLE FROM ATLANTA IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS,RADIO,BLOGGERS,DJS ECT…. SAYING THINGS AND IT HIT ME, AS THE SO CALLED MAYOR OF THE CITY I FELT SOMETHING NEEDED TO BE SAID .I WENT TO TWITTER AND POSTED “I HATE THAT THIS AWARD SHOW IS LOOKING LIKE THE MOST DISSED EVER AND IT TOOK PLACE IN THE A, BECAUSE IT MAKES US LOOK LIKE WERE PART OF THE DEMISE OF HIPHOP”MOST OF YOU WEREN’T AROUND WHEN IT WASN’T COOL TO BE FROM ATLANTA SO YOU PROBABLY DONT UNDERSTAND WHERE IM COMING FROM,BUT I FEEL A ATTITUDE IN THE AIR AS IF IT HAS TO BE HERE,THEY DONT, MATTER OF FACT THIS COULD’VE BEEN ITS LAST YEAR IN THE ATL.IF WE LOOK UP NEXT YEAR AND ITS IN NEW YORK OR MIAMI, JUST KNOW ITS OUR OWN FAULT.WHEN I SAW THE RIFF RAFT BETWEEN WAKA FLAKA AND STEPHEN HILL I UNDERSTOOD BOTH SIDES BUT STEPHEN’S POINT MORE ONCE HE EXPLAIN THAT HE WASN’T JUST DISSING HIM THEY HAD A SHOW PLANNED AND WE DID’NT GET TO SEE IT. 1. The font is in black…cant see it without highlighting

  2. Whats up JD? Why are you over there?

  3. Like I said on Twitter last night Atlanta artists do have alot to do with the demise of hip hop. The majority of the shitty rap that people hate comes from Atlanta. The best part of the show was the cyphers. The only person on there from Atlanta was Diamond and her performance was horrible. It was almost like she was sleeping. I know thats not the element she is used to but damn. I grew up in Atlanta, I have seen the rise and the fall…it aint what it was and never will be again. EVERYBODY and their broke ass momma moved to Atlanta tryin to “get on”. And now Atlanta is just over run with transplants and fake ass people tryin to be something they arent. I moved to Chicago 5 years ago, I dont plan to stay here forever but I know my next move WONT be back to Atlanta. It will feel like a step backwards.

  4. I think the last part of your statement is what it all comes down to. The show is a career impacting show & the lack of respect of the artists towards BET & self image is what is bringing the whole ATL rap image down. People like Waka treating it as if its the source awards. People in the audience not participating during performances, even the performers themselves not putting enough thought to their performances & just showing up & grabbing the MIC. There’s a reason people like Jayz, eminem don’t attend

  5. I think it’s just a production thing. Some years the production of the BET Awards have not been up to par with some other awards shows and so maybe people expect that carries over into the following years? I personally did not see the awards event this year so I can’t comment on the quality. But I know I have caught it in the past few years and yes it is national show.. but the production value of it could have used a little improvement. That’s not being negative. I LOVE Hip-Hop and I’m a HUGE fan of many of the artists from ATL, including yourself. That’s just my 2 cents on it. I will say though that I did catch that GOOD Music Cypher and it wrecked!

  6. Im gonna tell you like I told “PLAY” The BET Hip Hop Awards is always an event that the music industry has to stop and take notice. I love it Every year and I can’t wait to get on stage and be apart of my family. -D.MaL of TQ

  7. whats good JD when u get a chance check out http://www.myspace.com/Marvelousprince holla at cha boi jeahhhhhhhhhhh

  8. First off I want to say, ” Kandi how rude of you .. Like seriously “? Everyone is different so why put them all in one category, box, etc. So stop being ignorant!!

Secondly, JD don’t feel that way because believe it or not they talk about NYC (where I am from). No matter what happens people are always going to find fault in everything. You just have to ignore ignorance .. they will get over it one way or another. So keep your head up and keep making good music. The music game needs you.

  9. i missed it… but i saw the same thing on twitter it kinda hurt me as a black person more to see everyone going in so bad… and the trending topics list on my tweet deck at the bottom of every trending topic it has the meaning of the topic and the meaning of the bet hip hop awards said … and i quote people are tweeting about this wack ass award show!! and i was like wow is it really that bad that the meaning of the topic could not just say a award show about music ect.. anything i think it sucks how it went down on twitter… im from cali and i think it made us all look bad lol so ur not alone… i say u and me throw a huge party to fix it lol im 4real haha

  10. Atlanta Resident of 17 Years, From What I See, Every Time Something Good Happens In Atlanta, It Gets Set Back More Then It Moved Up! I Think You Should Create A City In UAE Called “@Lanta” & We’ll Start Moving There Slowly One By One… I Wouldnt Be Surprised if BET Awards Took Place In Dubai Next Year! Have Fun & Enjoy The Weather!

  11. I agree that not enough thought was put into the awards & not enough support not only from people from Atlanta, but from people in the hip hop industry period. While I was watching the performances of Soulja Boy and Wacka all I could think was “this looks like the ozone awards or something”. Then even putting the “hide your wifes, husbands and kids” dude was pointless and made the awards look even worse. So this did effect the image of Atlanta & the artist from Atlanta should have treated this like their time to really shine & do it for their city.

  12. JD, the awards show was all over the place. It didn’t flow. The crowd wasn’t crunk!! Artists didn’t even stay long enough it enjoy. It was a waste of time. The best part was Antinoe Dodson and his not even a rapper. Sorry JD!! Real Hip Hop and R&B is dead

  13. here is how i feel about this…this is the first year that i didnt attend the Hip Hop awards so i watch from my home in LA…the show does not flow and it is justy like the SOURCE awards…it became very LOW budget

JD, here are couple of thoughts i have.

first of all who does the voting where are they talleid from ? radio spins? opinions of Mr. Hill? because Nikki Minaj cleaning up like she did was just wrong

second. The performances, BOB – make him perform his hits Big Boi? shutther bug or shine blocka’s

the cyphers was a dope thing hats off to Mr. hill for that

i mean i could go on and on but also its the quality of people in the crowd, people need to show up step up and dress for the awards…..im leave it alone because

have fun in DUBAI..with whoooo kid and Fred Wreck…..CHI GARDEN

  14. I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH KANDI’S STATEMENT, YOU CAN’T BLAME THE DEMISE OF HIP HOP ON THE CITY OF ATLANTA. THE DEMISE OF HIP HOP IS DUE TO ECONOMIC HARDSHIP AND DESPERATION. WE AS A PEOPLE JUST DON’T HAVE THE MEANS TO SUPPORT ARTISTS THE WAY WE COULD OR SHOULD. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME AN ARTISTS CD WAS ACTUALLY PURCHASED FOR REAL? MOST PEOPLE GO ON LIMEWIRE OR SOME OTHER BIT TORRENT TO GET MUSIC. THIS YEAR’S BET AWARDS SHOW WAS A PRIME EXAMPLE THAT THE ECONOMIC STRUGGLE IS NOT JUST AFFECTING THE WORKING CLASS.

  15. I feel its just a worthless award. It has no real meaning, like a Grammy. You wont see anybody bragging about at BET hip hop award if they have a Grammy. Its an award show show for the sake of having an award show. Southern Hip Hop is not to blame. Let keep it real if the club doesn’t play those records you will not have a good time. I feel hip hop is in a state of transition and people are demanding more from the artist lyrically. But at the same time the people that are complaining about the state of hip hop, are the same people that illegally download the music they love. Im sure if people would use their money to dictate what they really wanted to listen to the industry would listen.

  16. I didn’t see the full thing, but what I saw was not exciting! I come to Atlanta faithfully to see my father. And like Kandi said it’s a whole lot of people who move down there just to put out stupid ass music the shit is foolish. I do remember when being from the A and putting out rap music was the thing, you felt it. Welcome to Atlanta was the song everyone had playing. Now all these young kids(SB,RD,and some others) are fucking it up. Hip hop will never be the same, and the funny thing about it is that these lil niggas really think they the shit and can rap makes me wanna slap the taste out there mouth they don’t even rap about anything important. That’s the thing your music whatever genre it is is has to have some meaning and love so your audience will feel it, they don’t go it! I think so far the only person who really got it is Luda!

  17. JD, . I’m only 20 so I missed the actual era of inspiring Hip-Hop but I still know and listen to everything from backday MCs to today’s current rappers. And from talking to my sisters parents oldheads etc etc the way they talk about rappers performing then and what I see now, two COMPLETELY different boats. That being said, I think anyone who outright blames Atlanta for the demise of hiphop or the BET HipHop Awards is fuckin stupid. I seriously question the nigga who says Gucci Mane Waka Flocka Soulja Boy etc killed hip hip… hip hop dying is nothing new. But at the same time take Flocka -___- WHAT THE FUCK KINDA SHIT WAS THAT?? Like really? I sware I heard nothing but BLOW BLOW and a whole bunch of illiterate screaming through-out his whole performance. Even though Waka Flocka doesn’t completely embody ATL rappers, he represented ( or was supposed to ) Atlanta when he was selected for the Awards. Same with Gucci Mane, both of those performances to the viewer at home even seemed like niggas in the crowd was on some wtf shit. I’m from the DMV so if the Awards EVER came to DC, I’d expect all DC MD and VA affiliated performers to SHIT and rep for the DMV. I guess all I’m tryina say is niggas need to step they performance mode up and that it’s still niggas that fuck with the A buleedat!

  18. @Meddi lmao now that’s a place I’ll have to check out have fun JD!

  19. “The Circle You Keep Around You,Is A Representation Of You.” So as an independent CEO of Break Em Off Records (The Label that brought you “Neva Scared” By Bone Crusher) ….I’m Telling You That It Is Very Important to not misuse your talent/skills …It will come back to haunt you !! We signed our first deal in 2002 so we understand the struggle of putting Atlanta on The Map. By Break Em Off being one of the first independent Laels and connecting with SoSo Def & Def Jam It was hard bringing attention to Atlanta…So lets stay focused CEO’s /Artist /Managers/ and Fans….Lets Get It and Keep This City On The Map !!!!

  20. It’s funny how people blame B.E.T. When at least they acknowledge hip hop!but I want to know is why at least the stars of ATL didn’t come out? Heck even Jay Z because if be even mentions a project BET is there to support. But beyond that, when the hightlights of the show is the cyphers, u know u can’t just go with popularity but rather substance. Salt N Pepa being honored..and I couldn’t even tell. A “tribute” to PAC…but know it’s NOT a reflection on ATL I’m inclined to believe it would be the same way anywhere else..until everyone get back to the authenticity of hip hop. Waka is a new artist, stick to the script. Where are the leaders of the game to say to him, NOOO! Remind him this is more than a place for u to perform it’s about the city, the show, hip hop!

  21. J.D. DO WHAT YOU DO BEST BABY AND FORGET THE REST. THE PEOPLE MAKIN THOSE REMARKS ONLY WISH THEY COULD BE IN THE SHOES OF THE PEOPLE THEY CHOOSE TO DISS AND CAN ONLY HOPE ACCOMPLISH HALF AS MUCH

  22. I do feel like this was one of the worst award shows EVER!!! I dont know everything about production but B.E.T shoudl have done a better job. It did seem like no one was hype or really enjoying the show! it also seemed like the performers didnt put much effort into their performance(just my opinion)!! I like Diamond as an young artist however her performance on the cypher wasnt the best. I do agree that more artist should have come out to support the show, but this shouldnt be a reflection of Atlanta. this is a relfection of B.E.T and their horrible production effort. I love what you and the city of Atlanta are doing for young, black, and all inspiring entertainers today, you are keeping Hip Hop alive in the south. I really wanted to see Waka’s No Hands performance and i was kind confused about what was going on. P.S im not from Atlanta im from Louisiana, but from the few times i have visited, it’s an amazing place.

  23. Yea, the best things of the night was the Cyphers which were not even filmed there. The award show should have been thought of just like a track. You don’t just put a track out after it has been engineered, you send it of to get mastered. The award show was like a track that was only engineered but not even by the best engineer. Of the performances Rick Ross was the best.

  24. I read ur comment last night & replied 2 it…..but now I have a better understanding of what u were getting at when u said it JD!!!!
I sympathize with u on wanting the ATL to stay 1 of the MAJOR cities for Hip-Hop, but like i said 2 u last night…..the award show could have been held in any other city & IMO the response would have been the same if it was presented in the same way.
I can’t speak for the entertainers that weren’t there but you do make a valid point about them needing to be present regardless of their feelings for BET. However I can see why most of them would want to stay away from most things BET related because it has become more of a reality network than one for music & they spend a lot of their time promoting a lot of foolishness that while sometimes provides us with a great laugh isn’t altogether laughable at all. Case in point….I saw people on my timeline saying the only reason they were watching was to see the HIDE UR KIDS, HIDE UR WIVES dude….SERIOUSLY!!!!…that is what BET has relegated itself to!

  25. The talent was garbage PERIOD J Cole was cool. BOB was good; never seen a Rapper perform while playing an instrument. Oh Antonie Dudson was awsome LOL. The cypher was great, and it was nice to see Digital Underground. But seriously, majority of the performances were terrible. There cant be a good award show without good talent. Oh, how many awards did they give out? I can only remember 3 or 4 and Nikki Minija won them all but lets not even go there. In conclusion…Hide cha kids hide cha wife…LOL

  26. There is so much I could address right now (the state of hip hop in general, “ATL’s music industry leaders”, BET itself, The new “leaders” of southern Hip Hop, etc) but I’ll just try to keep to one string of thought ….that being the actual BET HIP HOP AWARDS and the opinions of myself and others.

JD, I feel your concern regarding Atlanta being the host city and what that means big picture wise. However, for most people who are not in the business and for those like myself who are…but still…have no voice in what actually happens on that stage…I feel no sympathy for BET.

It was a poorly produced show and I feel that the fans, people, viewers etc have a right to say what it is that they like whether it is in Atlanta or not. The show is supposed to be for the people and if the people are not being entertained then what’s wrong with voicing our disdain?

Personally, I can find a whole rack of things that I dislike about some of the records I hear , things I see going on in this industry, the entertainment community in Atlanta and more. I am powerless to do anything about it EXCEPT voice my opinion and then re enforce that with my actions.

I’m saying that to say…It’s not the people’s job to protect BET and the perception that the city of Atlanta is the best place for the show when those that have the power to make it better are the one’s destroying it themselves.

It’s BET’s job to do better. It’s the artist’s job to do better on stage. It’s BET’s responsibility to make the front row accessible to THE PEOPLE who would really appreciate it, not the rapper’s entourage who are only looking for cameratime.

As someone said before me…I could go on and on but rest assured..more will be said here —–> http://www.americandjstory.com

I’d love to have your interview for it as well. We have many years and relationships between us. I will reach out to you directly as well but I wanted to support your blog.

Enjoy Dubai brother….I had a great time at Chi Lodge myself

  27. I haven’t watched the BET Awards for the past 2 years. I only saw the cyphers b/c of a tweet from Luda and Tyresse. Now Kandi, Diamond was not the worst on there. That award goes to Jo Jo Simmons followed closely by one of Ice Cubes kids (cool idea though showing black fathers with their sons bonding via hip hop). Look the problem isn’t the A (I’m from Chicago) the problem is BET. Since it got bought by Viacom (owns MTV & VH1) it ceased being a “black” channel. Hell Viacom only cares about ratings and they could give a shit about hip hop. You see they replaced the videos on MTV with reality shows and you can only see videos if you go to MTV 12 or are on the channel at 3 a.m. Have you not noticed alot of people don’t spend money on videos like they used to because this reality tv b.s. has taken over everything. So I wouldnt blame the A, but if you do watch the MTV video music awards (ironic since they really dont show music videos) the front section is filled with fans and the celebs sit in the back past the pit. They can take it to New York or LA but it is going to be the same thing. Award shows appear to be so heavily rigged that people only watch for the performances. If that is wack then the whole show is wack. To me the VMA’s were wack until Kanye shut it down, there was a reason Em only stayed for his performance (hell he really didn’t want to be there anyway), Jay & B weren’t there. JD were you even there? I know you Dj’ d a party out there. I thought Em’s performance lacked that luster and agression you expect from Marshall Mathers. It seems like the only person who came prepared to shut it down was Kanye So that is my .02 on the matter. I don’t think this puts any sort of reflection on the A its not like it was the Hip Hop Honors the south awards. This is the BET Hip Hop awards to the reaction is an indication of Hip Hop as a whole, and if people don’t like it then stop supporting crap and it won’t have an outlet to show its ass.

  28. I have to totally agree with JD. In 2006, JD hosted the final closing party for Billboard R&B Hip Hop Awards and I did the final luncheon. I was shocked to see how some of us act in this entertainment business. We forget where we came from. This was the one reason I allowed my company to sponsor the luncheon and talent showcase. I didn’t even have an artist performing. All the performances were from artists who were looking to showcase their talents to us and yet again, we can’t do anything right. Of all days, the last day to run over and when it was time to eat, run and leave the talent on stage to perform for an empty house (music professionals). I have to say I was one of them, however that is because I sponsored the ground transportation as well for Billboard Hip Hop Awards. The following year, Billboard struggled so hard to bring it back to the A, they said it would be the last year of the awards. Did they move to another city? NO! They cancelled the awards all together.

At the rate we’re going they will cancel BET! Billboard saw it’s fate and walked away. Some say it was due to BET doing their first show the following month from the Billboards. Others will say it served it time. In my opinion and ONLY mine, those who live in ATL and I do have a home there, don’t take stock in what we have. We don’t support the shows. No matter how any of us feel about BET, we have to support it. We have little access and resources for Hip Hop as it is in the media. Screw this up and YES maybe Miami, New York or Los Angeles will reap the revenues that are generated from the show.

In closing we have to support in order to continue to receive. The time we waste bashing, hurts us as a whole.

    Respectfully
    CBMG

  29. WOW at a few peoples comments! SMH… Hip Hop Awards in 2010 PERIOD shouldn’t have even taken place being that Hip Hop is at its worse right now! Hell Music Period. We are giving accolades and performance time to a man who was used as a mockery of ghetto black people by media (Antoine D)??? This is what we celebrate and use as an example of HIP HOP??? I think its ignorant to say that any particular city has the most amount of horrible artists hence the reason why the awards were a failure. The Show was a failure because anyone who tunes into BET, a radio station or iTunes FAILS us all by voting for these artists and videos because of a dope beat. When we know damned well its a garbage butt artist or song LYRICALLY PERIOD. BET is partial to blame but mostly, they gave their audience what they wanted as far as ARTIST line up. Its what YOU guys Youtube, download and vote for. Whether the show was anywhere else or not, the show would have been EXACTLY the same!

….. But A Rose Is Still A Rose By Any Other Name…
AKA That Show woulda still sucked a monkeys ass had it been anywhere else LOL…

To Sh*t on and blame ATL now because of a horrible awards show that had nothing to do with location is just ignorant. Atlanta has produced a many of amazing artists over the years, from R & B to Hip Hop. And now even many films. (No Gas) We have to remember and give Kudos to JD for discovering, proudly promoting & creating these ATL based artists for 2 decades now. ATL was never on the map as an Entertainment Hub outside of FREAKNICs until hip-hop artists like Da Brat, Kriss Kross, JD, Ludacris & etc made us aware that ATL was the NEW Motor City. You have one bad show there & now ATL produces WACK SHYT? C’Mon Son (Ed Lover Face)

Its NOT a LOCATION thing, half ass NOT an Artist thing, Its a NETWORK thing. When Vh1 Does Hip Hop Awards & Honors, we get a better result because time, thought & money is put into it. Unfortunately just as The BET Awards most recently or any Awards Show BET puts together, its not been up to par because lack there of patience, thought or money! We support the wrong programming on BET & wonder why we don’t get better shows or results.

    PERIOD! lol

  30. I watched the BET Awards from beginning to end and I have to say that I was not excited at all except for the cyphers. I could tell from the flow of the show how it was going to be. Personally I don’t think that the way the show turned out had anything to do with atlanta. The production and preparation of the show had a whole lot to do with it. It seems like there wasn’t alot of effort put into the show’s performances. When they kept showing the crowd, they didn’t even look into it like other shows.

  31. Bar the Grammy’s and a select few music award shows, they’ve all began to decline slightly. I just feel the BET awards is failing at a faster pace. Since Hip-Hop went mainstream a niche like BET is becoming rather irrelevant.

Secondly, you mention “THIS IS A CAREER IMPACTING NATIONAL AWARD SHOW”. I think award shows were career impacting, I’m not sure anymore. Case and point, look at Nicki Minaj, she & YM/CM have managed to market herself to the point where she won a couple of awards without an album. This is not an attack on her or her record label. I just wanted to point out that these “AWARD SHOWS” are becoming less relevant. Yes, they can take you from a regional level to a national level, but a lot of artist are achieving the same or similar results doing there own online guerilla marketing.

Of course there are other factors; the BET production value isn’t exactly polished either. It is crazy but, but if you want to see the biggest Hip-Hop artists, you are better off watching the Grammy’s or the MTVMAs. Hip-Hop is mainstream now. Also, there just seems to be too many award-type shows nowadays. How can we expect a good show when things are spread so thin. The Award Show has been cheapened. Make it special again.

  32. first off that award show was held in the dusty ass Civic Center building. What happened to BET spending a bit more for a more glamorous venue like the Fox Theatre, hell it might as well have been held at Club Crucial. Second where were all of these so called big name artists that should support the only pure hiphop award show there is? where was Jay-z, eminem, T.I., Drake, kanye,Outkast, Luda, Jeezy, 50 Cent, the Game, Snoop dogg, or even beyonce and alicia keys? They will be there for white award shows. There wasnt much star power besides Ross, Diddy, Trey songz, Gucci, and nikki. That shit is a shame. Hip hoppers dont come to the only hip hop awards. But they all pile into the grammys or even attend the country music awards, trying to be next level or some dumb shit. So I blame a little on BET and alot on all these so called rappers for that lackluster show.

  33. Nobody Knows http://t.co/9LA0cC5

  34. didn’t get to see the awards, but I certainly like ur point about looking inside for why sth is wrong rather than pointing fingers outwards like a lot of people do.

Just wanted to welcome you to Dubai. See ya at Chi tonight

  35. First of all the production did seem lacking a major budget. I just don’t understand the voting for the award system how does an artist win an award for not dropping a ALBUM.. The Performances was decent until wacka flocka turn it into the OZONE awards when he put everyone on stage and just walked around Saying BRICK SQUAD and POW POW POW i don’t even think he said a verse from his song. Bet is trying to make nikki minaj a star like how MTV made britney spears into a star. Now i do love the cyphers idea that brings back that Old MTV RAPS vide.. Also maybe if BET would show the awards show live instead of taping it and making it look so fake and cheesy that would give it a better feel to the show.. Plus the South didnt kill hip hop the powers to be killed it with everyone trying doing the same thing and looking the same.. oh and another thing i hate how the west coast acts make us look. Not all people from Cali wear skinny jeans and jerk..

  36. 1. my lil bro cyhi the prync killed the cypher
    2. my other lil/big bro rick ross is in a zone right now. yes he needs a lil more fine tuning in some areas. but at least he is growing. ya’ll remember i signed him to slip n slide in 99/2000
    3. nobody believed me when i was telling the city & the world b.o.b. was gonna be big. another lil bro
    4. we gotta ride for the city of atlanta, more people have to really understand why the city is so strong & once they do that. more people will understand the fabric of the city is not really the music biz
    5. jd, dallas austin, raheem, shy d, dj toomp, edward j, big oomp, kevin whales, devyne stephens & others will never get the credit they deserve. just like most of us dont know doc lowery, rev orange, john lewis, hosea williams & the rest of the soldiers who really built this city. we think all atl is jeezy, ti, outkast & the new comers. this history of this city is the foundation of why we can do what we do. nothing to do with music. so if we dont know what paved the way before the music & dont care who the 1st hip hop generation the city is. we’re stuck.
    6. all these music industry blessed kids are the direct products of a city that changed the world for black people & if you’ve been in magic city, lenox mall, the velvet room or the compound & have never been to the king center. thats the start of why good things never last in ATL
    7. this is why people like jd gets mad at others when events like the bet hip hop awards dont consistantly feel the way they should. everybody looks at these events as a hustle.
    8. this bet hip hop awards show should be like the grammy’s of hip hop & freaknic shouldve been bigger than bonnaroo. if you dont know what bonnaroo is google it
    9. some of you greedy artist who want $50,000 to come to a club or to make an apperance need to really start thinking. your attitude about your lil success is nothing to the guy who owns itunes & doing something out of love for the culture, industry & fans sometimes & not always for money is not gonna hurt your pockets. when was the last time you heard beyonce, jayz, usher or a big a list artist do a real radio interview. you guys are selling us like corp america is selling out the united states of america. time you get a little money you’re to good to even do a simple interview with the peopl who once put their jobs on the line to give you an interview. oh unless you wanna promote your new biz venture, its cool thien because it helps you. remember the world revolves around you.
    10. you can say what you want v-103 is the #1 radio station (not black station, stations period) in the country accordng to arbitron not rolling out. think about how many artist pass the station (and dont stop for an interview) but wonder why they fall off. and a lot of these artist are not just my peers, but my so called frends. artist ive helped when their vision was just a dream.
    11. i know some of you are gonna have something slick to say, but jd is my friend & my family. if you have a friend & you have never had any differences or fights. he or she is not your true friend (ya’ll are fake & talk about each other behind their backs). true friends & relationships period will always have differences & fights. the end result is the true test of love & friendship. jd i loved the video in detroit at motown, keep grinding lil bro. none of us have completed our journey if you are reading this blog. until you’ve completed the journey (not a few missions) stop judging & keep living. atlanta ga is the black bethlehem

  37. with what the big homie Greg Street has said CASE CLOSED! We(as people) have got to do better.

  38. If I had to choose……. @GregStreet’s number 8,9 and 11 are on point and in order. I moved to Atlanta 4 years ago and I LOVE It!!!!!

Where else can you have such a diversified community that sticks together and overcomes many of its obstacles as a community! We have to be that in the business of Hip Hop. You don’t become a Democrat and have Republican views so why tune in to the BET HIP HOP AWARDS and not be happy with the outcome when you really want to watch Annie? I don’t get it……This generation is Hip Hop and although some individuals may make some wrong choices on how they want to represent themselves, we need to stick to the facts when making a statement.

  39. I agree wit u JD. It is true that a lot of the “BS” in the music industry is comin from the A but it is also a lot hot shit that never reaches the surface becuz people here just don’t support it. Music fans in the A gauge an artists worth by their ability to move heads instead of move units. Close-Mindedness is at an all time high not only in the A but the whole South in my opinion. Atlanta used to be were everybody around the nation found new shit… I kno cuz I been here my whole life and I grew up on Outkast, Goodie Mob, and other greats that came from rite here. It is hot artists in the A we just need support… That’s the only way we can take the game back. The BET Awards was a clear reminder that the A needs to step it up.

  41. The BET Awards is a “career impacting” event JD…… really? No seriously….REALLY? BET should have NO baring on ATL or anything it brings to the table for its citizens/visitors. BET simply sucks. Whether the show airs in Atlanta, New York, LA or Chicago… IT WILL STILL SUCK BECAUSE BET SUCKS! Whenever you’re a black entertainment station and your best show ideas come as a result of stealing show premises from a predominately white station (MTV)… SOMETHINGS WRONG. They came up with that bootleg Baldwin Hills from MTV’s The Hills. They even jacked the greatest hip hop artists since 1999, that you are on, from MTV! MTV has been doing the greatest hip hop artists list for YEARS now. We know you live and breathe this industry JD, but when shit is bootleg JUST LET IT GO.

    music industry forever.

Today is a new beginning… Be a witness to the aftermath.

  43. I think gregstreet hit it right there with #9

“9. some of you greedy artist who want $50,000 to come to a club or to make an apperance need to really start thinking. your attitude about your lil success is nothing to the guy who owns itunes & doing something out of love for the culture, industry & fans sometimes & not always for money is not gonna hurt your pockets. when was the last time you heard beyonce, jayz, usher or a big a list artist do a real radio interview. you guys are selling us like corp america is selling out the united states of america. time you get a little money you’re to good to even do a simple interview with the peopl who once put their jobs on the line to give you an interview. oh unless you wanna promote your new biz venture, its cool thien because it helps you. remember the world revolves around you.”

    The LOVE is missing.

  44. The Music Business is going through a MAJOR TRANSITION right now. Fans are getting tired of the lackluster Music that is at the forefront of the Music Scene. Why? Because it lacks Emotion and Connection. Originality is becoming a thing of the past. As I watched the BET Hip Hop Awards the other night, my mouth was floored as to what I was watching. I couldn’t believe some of these guys’ performances. Are you really going to just walk around the stage and not engage the crowd like that??? Are you really going to hop off stage and grab people from the audience to come on stage with you to stand around like WTF are we doing up here??? This isn’t the club…this is a FUCKING Award Show. But these are the guys that we make popular because we like to hear their Music in the Club. These are the same guys that Club Promoters pay over 20K to JUST walk around the stage with a Mic in their hand.

That’s what stared us in the face the other night while watching the BET Hip Hop Awards. I felt almost embarrassed that I support this shit. We let people fool us into believing that if you voice your opinion about something in a Negative Way that it’s considered “HATING.” Fuck that…If it’s WACk…say it’s WACK…Go on Twitter and tell that artist..”Your Music SUCKS!!! RT RT RT” Lol…I don’t even listen to FM Radio anymore. Strictly Satellite Radio. They’re not caught up in playing Music to keep the listener’s away from the Competitor Station. They just play what they feel is HOT. They play songs like J. Cole “Blow Up” or “Higher”; Songs with a Message. Or I can flip over to this channel called Backspin and listen to Old School Hip Hop. Anything to get away from FM Radio. I refused to be forced to listen to Lackluster Music.

So JD, The reason why alot of industry folks didn’t go to the BET Hip Hop Awards is because they didn’t want to be forced to watch what we watched on TV. Can you imagine Eminem, Jay-Z and Beyonce sitting in the audience watching that??? I spoke with you that day and told you I wasn’t going because I knew it was going to be some Bullshit and Boy was I right. I had more fun enjoying my Homecoming Festivities. I understand that you’re the Mayor and you want ppl to support ATL but “THAT AIN’T IT” *Tyrone Voice* Ppl won’t be forced to support something they GENUINELY don’t like. If you REALLY want to keep the Music Scene Alive in ATL, then you need to start signing acts from here and producing some HITS ASAP. Because the way it’s looking, it’s about to go back to when I first moved here when Big ATL Club Songs like Pastor Troy’s “We Ready” never made it to be a National Hit.

  45. JD, I am just baffled as to why you would think that there is a correlation between the BET Hip Hop Awards and Atlanta?
I honestly don’t see a connection between the city and what BET puts out as ‘entertainment’.

Not only did I not watch the show, I also didn’t follow the Twitter activities that ensued, so I can’t say much about those.
I will however say that, NO ONE BUT BET IS AT FAULT, or responsible for any negativity, regarding the show or the network.

BET have been on a down slope for ages. Even its creators have washed their hands of it.

JD; rather than taking the insults personally, I suggest you have a serious chat with your friend, Stephen Hill. He and Deborah Lee need a serious dose of reality. For them, its all about quantity. They forget that in order to create a legacy, its not about how many shows you put out, but about the QUALITY of those shows and programmes.

PS. That statement about the award being “career- impacting”, honestly killed me slowly!!!
Who benefits from being a recepient???? I would have taken this whole matter more seriously, if that statement hadn’t been made.
The Grammy’s are prestigious. Even the VMAs hold more clout that a BET award!!!

  46. Wow!! let the past be in the past thats why we say future..the game changed get over it alreadddy.. we in the crunk era…Atlanta, Miami, the South period is on top let the south have their time and shine..the north had it for centuries meaning a long time..Do like Diddy change with the game…thats why he always win…Love you diddy ( We have a lot of haters).. The South laid back when the North was on…now its time for the North to do so…Just try to calabo with the artist from the ‘south’ how the north is going about it…I wouldnt do it..

  47. OK LETS TALK FOR A MINUTE LIFERS………

Lets stop with the ATL blame…..BET blame stuff……..lets stop that now and take this where it needs to go…….to the music industry and young artist as a whole right now

The problem comes becuz its to many artist and not enough stars being made……thats problem number one……nobody is teaching these artist how to be stars nowadays……young artist think buying a VVS chain……pulling up in a Bentley….having this huge entourage and a mean mug are the ingredients of being a star….like a wanna be a hip hop star starter kit or some shit

the problem lies in that there is are no more K. wales, K. Burns, JD, Puffy(not this diddy cat but the uptown cat) mark pitts, dame dash, mona scott, chris lighty, Irv gotti, LA reid, Babyface, micheal bivins, dallas austin, Andre Harell type managers and exexutives who knew how to take raw talent and MOLD THEM INTO SUPERSTARS…..THEY KNEW HOW TO TELL AN ARTIST THAT IT TAKES MORE THAN YOUR NATURAL GOD GIVEN TALENT TO RAP OR SING TO BECOME SOMETHING BIG IN THIS INDUSTRY

each exec I named above started major movements that actually gave something back to the world and were groundbreaking at the time SO SO DEF, ROCAFELLA, BADBOY, UPTOWN RECORDS, VIOLATER, MURDER INC, LAFACE, BIV 10, ROWDY….each person I named above was part of these movements that garnered multiple artist and real SUPERSTARS……

Now let me get to the point…..the above folks taught there artist how to be superstars and to make there presence felt and that a awards show like the one they were about to perform on was a priceless platform for free advertising to millions of viewers all at one time that u dont ususally dont get a chance to perform in front of…….SO GET UP THERE AND KILL EM LIKE ITS YOUR LAST PERFORMANCE…….

artist today have no such guidance…. JD, Mark Pitts, and K. wales have been replaced by homeboys and hanger ons that dont know the first thing to tell them when it comes to events and promotional oppurtunities like this……therefore the artist and there performances suck ass nowadays….your homeboy junebug who u have as your manager just doesnt have what it takes to tell u how to be a star…..sorry

just think…..would dame dash have to tell JAY Z to kill it, Would LA have to tell Outkast, TLC, and Usher to be ready, would mark pitts have to Tell Biggie how important this was, Would JD have to tell Kriss Kross, Da brat, or Bow Wow to get it together…….well hell even if they did….THEY HAD THEM IN PLACE TO TELL THEM HOW IMPORTANT AN EVENT LIKE AN AWARDS SHOW IS TO THERE PROMTIONS, CAREERS, AND EXPANDING THERE FAN BASE

these young artist today not so much…….the dame dash and Jermaine Dupris are now your homeboy from down the street and the results are what u are seeing now

it dont matter where they air or tape this show……its gonna suck until the artist get better or better guidance PERIOD

  48. Another thing I would like to add is the lack of Artist Development that’s killing the hip hop image. Like I mentioned above its a two way thing between BET & artists. Why didn’t they have artists like Nelly perform who has the #3 record in the country regardless of whether they consider the his record hip hop or not. BET needs to create respectable shows & demand respect from the artists. Drake is as successful as he is because of artist development, something a lot of ATL/new rappers lack

  49. Being that I am a BIG fan of Hip-Hop and Rap, I recorded the show on my DVR, because I knew that there was no one I wanted to see! I don’t like Ross, Gucci,Waka,Soulja Boy, The teach me how to dougie boys, the only part I watched was Mc Hammer, the people who presented a couple Cyphers and ofcourse Salt And Pepper, (Which was an Huge dissapointment) Because I felt that the Female Artsit should have performed and paid homage to them. IF I was there I would of wanted to pay homage! I’ve seen the female rappers come out by thierselves and do their OWN songs but never have I seen a female rapper come out and pay homage and do a song for them! I fast forward threw most of the show, watched Mike Epps, its like he had 10 lines, which sucked. I no it’s not the Hip Hoip honores but maybe yall should bring some of the old Hip Hop into the Awards, because when u do thats when people get hype ass hell!!! Also I didnt watch the dougie boys, but thought it was cool that they brought Digital Underground out, The Best performance was B.O.B like thats how a REAL Artist performs! That made me wanna buy his cd, (Bout to check it out on itunes) AND I love how Mike Epps paid Homage and wore the different clothes from diff genertations of Hip Hop. The best Cypher to me was (Because I’m Old school and im only 19 lol) Rev Run and Ice Cube with their Kids, I thought that was sick! The Awards look like yall rented out a high school lol it was nothing fancy about it, Maybe you should put it together next year General…..

  50. i probably would’ve went to that bullshit ass awards either hip hop is fake now. we got ll these new artist rapping about the SAME DAMN THING

  51. JD we know the rap game is messed up. But if the show was being held in ATL everyone in the industry should have been there!

  52. Hey JD, I love the A! Went down there alot for work over the end of last year, and couldn’t get enough of Buckhead life! Man I would love to live there, and will def be making many wknd trips with my wife, exquisite dining, endless things to do, and shopping out the ass! Funny coincidence was in neighborhood on way home and you and Jiggaman’s song “Money ain’t a thang” came on the air, “ya’ll wanna floss wit us?”

Hello Beverly Hills of the South!

  53. I don’t have time to read through all these comments but I’m sure this has been said. If not… here goes.

As a blogger… and as an ATLANTA blogger, I have to be completely honest and say that while I agree with you that the hip-hop awards don’t have to be here, since they are… they should be held to a higher standard.

Just because you’re hungry doesn’t mean you have to accept crumbs!

I covered the awards show and chose not to do a detailed post on it because the show sucked. Sorry but it’s a fact. The reason it sucked had nothing at all to do with Atlanta. The show is ran by BET and BET didn’t put any effort into it IMO.

BET chose to film the awards here because of 1) the cost effectiveness (it’s cheaper than other cities) and 2) the ratio of hip-hop artists already centralized in our city.

I can’t speak on the “rap game” because I’m not in it. I can however speak as a viewer/consumer who has supported Atlanta artists all my life. And it appeared to me that BET dropped the ball. NOT ATLANTA.

  54. I feel like it has to do with what type of music the artist is putting out. I LOVE hip hop but lately it just all sounds the same, their comes a time when rapping about cars, women, and how much money you have and how much jewelry you can wear at one time gets old. Just saying :/

  55. I believe that since B.E.T. dosen’t take this Show serious we as a community have no choice but to do the same, Hip-Hop is the major music listened to in today’s society. The fact is they make the Bet awards the show to go to and just throw another show together to carter to the fans, But really there just not giving hip-hop a platform to set a higher goal.. This show could be the grammy’s if they treated as such, but Since they don’t take it serious which was shown, thru every disasterous perfomance. There is no need to put the blame on Atl, but yet the channel themselves. There where few awards giving out and nothing worth talking about. Not even the vet’s or talented artist drew u in except, B.O.B and he repped ATL. Don’t blame the city J.D. we just spoke on the event’s that occured B.E.T dosen’t care about hip-hop it’s just a check for them…

  56. steven hill was so right wacka 1st started out by tryin to bring other artist to the stage who as u could see from there faces didnt wanna go up there then he left them up there to go in the crowd when he came back to stage they were all GONE then his wack ass doesnt even rap 70% of his lyrics C’mon Son u have no right to beef…. but i feel u JD other than that part i thought the show was pretty good…. and the cypher was prob the absolute best part BOB was hot n i really liked how shock G was on the piano shouting out 2pac

  57. HEY JD! “WHERE THERES UNITY THERES STRENGTH!” If we dont have togetherness we’re not gonna be strong! Not sure what its gonna take for us to get there..but we must stand together, hold on 2 each other, share with one another, just be there for each other! JD I HOPE UR HAVING AN AWESOME TIME..U DESERVE IT! 🙂 MUCH LOVE TO ALL THE LIFERS!

  58. Sorry LIFERS!

Uncle GREGSTREET, I call him uncle cuz he calls almost everybody in the game lil’ bro!
He said it all and Jaysupermanager is not wrong!

After GREGSTREET comment, the CASE is CLOSED!!! I’m not saying that elder are always right, but we have, nah we must give them credit for experiementing and experiencing everything they did. And GregStreet is far from a man that doesn’t know what he’s talking about or disconnected from reality.

  59. I’m with Greg Street and I haven’t lived in the A since 06…#BIEM

  60. What’s up JD…..it will be the shit if you did a vh1 reunion with xscape thank a bout it…….Love you phatfffat you the shit….

  61. There has been a lot of shitty music from the A…. Soulja Boy and Wacka being very good examples. But there has also been a shit load of great music. Crappy music has come from everywhere, ATL is just the capitol of hip-hop right now…… But on another note….FUCK BET, they don’t deserve anybody’s respect, I haven’t watched BET for years now because its pathetic. They make our ppl look sad and they are not even a good representation of the variety of really good hip-hop artists in this country right now. They play bullshit all day, and every year they do less and less good in our communities….makes sense though since they haven’t been black-owned in forever. I pray for a world without BET very soon

  62. JaySuperManager – is telling the truth.

  63. Agreed CatAnnBur.
