  1. Ok just checked out the list and I am trying to figure out how you have the highest selling album of all time in “Thriller” and end up number three on the list. I agree with you JD how is Janet not on the list? Bob Dylan is a great songwriter but vocally Bob Dylan could only do folk music. Stevie Wonder should have been over Elvis in my opinion but then I never would have had Elvis on there period. i don’t know it is really a personal preference you can’t really rate music like that!

  10. we were watching this while it was airing and twitter went IN on VH1…not only for Janet (which is she’s not on the list, no female artist that came after should be on the fuckin list)…Beyonce @ 52??? why??? I like Beyonce, but she has ZERO memorable and timeless songs, ZERO! and there are A LOT of people who aren’t on the list that just blew everyone’s mind…VH1 did HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Janet has TWO album on Rolling Stone’s greatest albums of all time list, but she’s not on VH1’s list??? 25 people on the list shouldn’t be there…and the order of the list is FUCKED UP!!!!!

  11. The list is bogus and does not matter. But, like others have said, it amazes me that Janet never gets the recognition she deserves. She is the greatest all-around female entertainer ever to do it, yet never gets respect in this industry. Why isn’t she in the R&R Hall of Fame? It’s like folks are trying to diminish and erase her accomplishments. Very frustrating.

    Now on to this Janet thing. This list is a form of printed disrespect, these major companies DO NOT CARE until their sinking and need the TALENTED artists to come save the day, whether is record sales, ratings, or issues sold.

    @TajJackson3 (Taj Jackson of 3T) was telling us yesterday on Twitter how he witnessed a few years back MTV was on the phone begging his uncle Michael to perform because their ratings were dropping.

    Yet they won’t mention Michael’s name when they are presenting the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award. Thats some bull! For real for real (in my Mariah Carey memoirs of an imperfect angel voice)

  13. Micheal should have def been number 1, no disrespect to Dylan or the Stones but the impact Mike had on the music and the world has not and more then likely will not be felt again. As far as Janet goes should as LEAST been in the top 50, I mean her not being on the list is DISRESPECTFUL, record sells, influence and musical style, Ms Jackson is one of the best and VH1 fucked up on that. Also no Wu-Tang, no Kanye!!!!

  19. And one more thing. Everyone on the list have a big impact in musician today. They all individually unique, creative, and original AIGHT>?. They all are inspirations to music culture. They came out with something new and fresh. Plus they sold millions of albums more than any other band, pop artist, and rap artist at the time you see what i’m saying. They will never be forgotten.

    What i’m trying to say is Janet didn’t have control over her music in the beginning. After her 2 albums falled to top the charts, they had to hirer producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to work with her to help mode her as an artist. Paula Abdul was her cographer, so she help Janet too. You see, Janet isn’t a producer/musican/beat maker/cographer as Michael was. Michael did it all himself, he had no help. All these artist in the list had no help when it comes to A&R reps modding them.

    Michael took control over his music in the beginning. He wanted to be different. I can’t say Janet was original. She was a sex icon which Madonna is a sex icon first lol. But what made it interesting is that we didn’t expect that from Janet. Her image shocked everyone.

    I’M SORRY BUT JANET IS NOT THE GREATEST. BUT SHE DID HAD GREAT MUSIC, AND GREAT VIDEOS, BUT THAT’S NOT ENOUGH TO TOP MICHAEL. MICHAEL IS THE FIRST AND JANET CAN’T BEAT MICHAEL, SO MICHAEL IS THE GREATEST.

There are somethings that you just don’t do such as putting a person who learned at the throne of many of today’s entertainers ahead of them on a greatest list. Case in point if Beyonce’s 2006 VMA performance of Ring the Alarm was not rhythm nation in a tan coat then i don’t know what is. there are certain things you just don’t do on greatest lists and obviously VH1 forgot these rules. i have no words.

Just because Michael is gone that doesn’t mean put her down, which that being said yes, she should have been on that list. Her music is timeless. Janet has work very hard her whole career not to be just Michael little sister or tried to ride his coat tail she has made a name for herself and she doesn’t get credit for it.

I had a feeling in my gut that when I was watching this list, that they were not going to give Michael Jackson his props and put him the the number 1 spot, I knew that they were going to give The Beatles #1 spot, even though the soul of the group, John Lennon, died in 1980. This list just goes to show that to this day, MJ still have haters. No one will ever be able to duplicate what Michael has done in the music industry and the impact that he has had on the industry. They didn’t include Alanis so maybe that balances out. Lauryns’ impact and her void in the market place is severely missed.
    OK BAck to Janet, Her impact was greater than George Michael. After WHAM, which they probably included, FAITH, which is a classic, is the only relevant album by him. SMH at the list.

Usher is 1 of the biggest selling artist to date and is way above the level of Justin so that the first. But where’s Artist like Kanye? Where’s The Black Eyed Peas?     Do you know that MJ had 10 solo albums?
    Did you know 2 of them were considered flops? (before Thriller)
    Have checked to see if any of the other artist had flops that were on that list because many of them did.

    Janet may have had 2 albums that were considered flops but she was a force that changed the way females artist perform. No one does that runway walk better then Janet and anyone that did it after swagger jacked it from her. Not even Madonna can lay that claim because she “borrowed” from everybody. Ask Jody Watley and the House of Ninja. Janet set trends and broke the mold.

    As per that list……. this is why I know longer pay attention to channels like MTV and VH1.

    We’ll never see a list from media outlets like Rolling Stone, MTV, VH1, etc. truly acknowledge artists of ALL backgrounds in the order they impacted music.

    That’s why they continue to disrespect the most talented musical family the world has seen.

    If Michael and Janet were the Osmonds, they would have been listed in 1st and 2nd place.

    And as some have mentioned, there are so many others that should be on that list and almost 50% that shouldn’t.

  43. When BET comes out with a Top 100 or maybe some mid way between races (which I thought vh1 was) comes out with a top 100 it will be more accurate. I am not appalled by the list for the most part and I knew that Michael Jackson was going to be either no1 or no2 next to the Beatles but I didnt expect him to be beat by Bob Dylan. Michael Jackson did what few people on this list did: He crossed over in a way where EVERYONE knew him and more non minorities where buying his albums. Only a handful of people were able to accompolish that on the list full and all of them are Black! Now, Bob Dylan is the truth and he deserves top 5 but not before MJ. I am not disapointed about the top ten acutally outside of the fact that Stevie Wonder should also be in the top 5. Elvis definately no lower than number 11 because he was a theif (but a smart one). When I look at the list, all though I am not fimiliar with all the artists, I am trying to figure out who could have been eliminated to add Janet. The list isnt horrible you just have to understand who created the list. To me this seems like 100 greatest rock stars list. Where is Mahalia Jackson? The people they listed dated back to the baby boom era and thats it. No Count Bassey, no Louis Armstrong none of the artists that actually started it all. Janet should def be more appreciated and I love her music I have half of her music catalog on my Itunes. I just know that they had “limited seating” for a certain type of artist and I am not surprised!

Michael Jackson had to work twice as hard to sell and again, he is Mr. All World Crossover. Only 3 1/2 black people bought a Beatles album! HA

  54. It is unfortunate that alot of people do not realize how hard it must have been for Janet to come behind all of her brothers and sisters and pave her own way. She created her own lane and she definitely deserves all the credit in the world for that. What she has done could not have been easy and it is amazing that she never rode any of her siblings coat tails. Janet has been in showbusiness since she was 7 years old and she is still doing it! I believe that the superbowl incident has made it hard for her and some people want to discredit her because of that and that is not right. Janet has paved the way for a lot of people and you cannot take away her accomplishments. I am proud to be a fan of hers and I wish her all the luck in the world with her new film. I hope she gets nominated (again) for an Academy Award only this time in acting AND music categories because I hope you, Janet, Johnta and B-Cox all get nominated for the song “Nothing”. I think you all deserve it.
