Prince

THIS IS VERY INTERESTING, LIFERS HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS ? AND HOW MANY OF YOU KNEW HE WAS COMING WITH A NEW ALBUM?

Prince: ‘The Internet Is Over’

By Andre Paine, London
Prince has given what has been billed as his first U.K. newspaper interview in a decade as part of a deal for his new album, “20Ten.”

The Daily Mirror will give the album away July 10 as a free CD with the paper, whileEuropean deals have also been struck with Rolling Stone Germany and a Belgian newspaper (Billboard.biz, June 29).

In the interview, Prince outlines his anti-Internet stance. Naturally his comments have been widely circulated via the Internet.

“The Internet is completely over,” Prince told the Mirror. “I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it.”

He added: “The Internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated.”

Prince is not a fan of digital devices, either. “All these computers and digital gadgets are no good,” he said. “They just fill your head with numbers and that cant be good for you.”

Prince does not intend “20Ten” to get a download release in addition to the free CD distribution with newspapers and magazines. He has also shut down his official website and does not plan to license new music to download stores or subscription services.

A U.S. distribution deal for the album has yet to be confirmed. The record has been linked with Warner Bros.

  1. See my tweet…

  2. This is a marketing ploy. All those UK fans that get the CD will upload it on file sharing sites and it will spread like wildfire. What he is doing is utilizing the media to cut costs on his marketing budget. No Brainer! Prince makes his money from touring…

  3. Good morting!!!

@ yo! I agree 100%……. Great marketing for an old schooler!!!!

  4. Wow!!! I wish Prince would’ve elaborated on how the internet is over while its still growing. LOL Imma hafta talk to some of my big Prince fans friends and see if they knew he had an album coming out cuz I sure as hell didn’t know!!!

  5. I in a lot of ways agree with Prince. The internet has put a huge damper on the money that artists used to make from their music. With ITunes and other music downloads websites, we (the consumer) can buy any song for $1.29, we do not have to buy the album. It seems good for the consumer, but think about the artist who has worked extremely long hours putting together their album. I definitely do not think the artist worked as hard as they have to have the consumer be able to buy certain songs and not the entire album, it sucks for the artist. To have an artist like Prince, a legend and musical genius, say that he depises the internet, says a lot. His comments really shows that it’s not the money that drives his creativity, it’s his passion to continue to create and share with all of us, really good music.

I think that the Internet has definitely taken away the excitement for purchasing new albums. I remember whan I was a kid (I will be 29 later this year), I could not wait to go to Best Buy and purchase the new Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton album. I used to save up my money to buy CD’s. Now with so much technology, the excitement for me is gone. The music is not as good as it used to be. I barely watch videos anymore. Hell, BET is the only cable network station that has a full hour video program (106 & Park). MTV (need to change their name to RTV for Reality Television) and VH1 are now fixated on the reality TV phenomenon and has basically forgotten about music videos, which was their foundation.

I understand that during the many decades of music, change happens, but should change be at the detriment of good music?!

Sorry this comment is a bit long, just wanted to express my opinion.

    -Thanks a million.

  6. i cant blame Prince seeing that there are millions of priates out that stealing music and a bunch of other things. Prince is keeping it old school and thats what others need to do to. i cant go against him when he said digital devices arent good for us. texting has taken precedence over verbally speaking to 1 another.
i hope this will sell prince millions of cd because now he is back in folks mouths.

  7. wOW Sometimes I wanna live in that world Prince is in…it sounds carefree.

  8. I knew he had an album coming out, because of the shirt he wore at the BET Awards. (Self-promotion)
As for him saying the internet is dead…I don’t think he literally meant that. I believe he meant to say that, the internet has killed the music industry! Or at least, the sales in the music industry!
The internet has literally killed so many industries.
JD, I saw your tweet yesterday about the retailers closing down.
‘Blockbuster’ was one of them, and I blame the internet for that.

  9. Scratchin my head on that one but i’m sure a person of his stauture don’t need the sales so it just may work in his favor.

  10. I agree wit @yo…But i luv me some prince and will tell my cuzzos in England to get a copy of the mirror for me.

  11. Prince is an establish artist. If he wants an advance he can get one. Prince is just saying if I can get somebody to give me $1 million for this album, I will take that and call it a day. I don’t care if the fans buy it or like it. I just want the check.

He has a point though in the movie industry if you want to distrubuted a movie digitally those companies usually pay an upfront fee to the studio. If you are an independent movie producer and a major studio buys your movie for a fee and then they own it and distrubute it. You might get a piece of the gross, and DVD sales but you got most of your money up front. Of course the record industry gave advances to artists too. I think most digital services pay the label something upfront to put their music on their site but it’s a small fee.

  12. and @ewurafu Prince had an Elvis presley shirt on boo boo…

  13. ROTFFLMBAO….prince get dat moneyyyy….he is a smartman and knows thangs.

  14. Prince trippin…. he always tryin to go left when everything is right.

  15. I’m in the IT game as a front end web designer. I see the benefits of the internet as a powerful marketing and publishing tool. Frankly I think Prince could be using this to sell records, but if so why? I mean his name alone is a brand. Him embracing the internet will totally emancipate him from any publishing obligations and will allow him to have complete control of his brand. I think any producer or artist who is speaking negatively about the internet have been “hoodwink” by the large corporations who make artist dependent on their publishing. In my opinion who needs them.

I think it’s encouraging to see producers and artist pursue alternatives where they can knock out the “middle-man”, and for good reason – money. Why sell records from the back seat of your trunk when you can sell records from the comfort of your own home or office. Upgrade your presentation, build your empire to be officially independent, do your independent marketing and so on. Mind you it depends on your brand.

The internet is nothing more than a tool. It can be used in different ways. Pro-Tools is a great tool to compose music and a lot of producers and artist use it. This is an example of how technology can help the industry. I’m sure Prince realize this. You can either get on or get ran over. People like me look at internet as a huge resource of information and opportunity, it’s just another learning curve.

    Holla at ya boy!!!

  16. I adore Prince, but I think he is missing a lot of things about the internet… this is just the beginning.

  17. KUDOS 2 Prince! but I had no clue he was coming out with another cd..Prince ain’t a dumb ass he’s still connected with tha cyber world 😛 he knows how ppl take shit and run with it so i’m guessing that’s why he made a statement like that *prince shrug*

  18. @Neneh,
I am not sure you know what Elvis looks like, “boo boo”!

  19. Internet is not mtv, the internet is like a xerox copy machine and prince whats to go back and use the printing press cause he cant work the copy machine.

prince had a website where he charged 77 dollars for a year subscription. He was suppose to release all kinds of content through it, but failed to deliver. They shut the site down and forgot to turn of the subscriptions and peoples credit cards where charged another 77 dollars

get people around you that know what there doing……

  20. I have to agree and disagree with Prince on this one. Jay said the same thing a few years back about not releasing his either black cd or kingdom come cd on the internet. Saying that it was nothing wrong with people getting up and going to the record store and buying his CD. Now i believe he see that it doesnt work that way any more. Yeah the internet has its flaws but for right now its in. Even though i dont see no 16-25 year olds going to go download his new CD, i do believe he could hurt himself by not putting it out there for people to buy as they see fit. Its the age of CHOOSE!! I have the right to pick how i want to buy ur CD, it only hurts the artist when i cant find it how i want it. When people are looking to spend there money in these time you have to give it to them how they want it.

  21. Prince speaking on the internet was purely an emotional statement, I feel the internet and technology in general has separated us from one another but anybody that says the internet is a ‘fad’ is just plain mad about something. We all know the Internet has sparked significant growth for every industry/field and it is still in it’s infant stages. Internet and technology will continue to grow at this exponential pace and nothing can really challenge it.
