  1. Dizz – The Teen Phenom Mixtape: http://www.datpiff.com/pop-mixtape-player.php?id=md01cb40&tid=1 THE HOTTEST TEEN MIXTAPE OUT ! BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE HOTTEST TEENAGE RAPPER OUT ! PLS TAKE A LISTEN, YOU WILL ENJOY. GOOD MUSIC.

  2. I think Eminem has that same appeal just like Jay-Z, very subtle and not preachy with their lyrics, but very on point with their topics that resonates with everyone in society.

  3. I am going to us 50 Cent as my example. On his Curtis cd he put out two singles (Straight to the bank and Amusement Park) then had to hold the album back to put out two more (I Get Money and Ayo Technology). As a music fan you already have heard four songs before it drop and only two of the four got my attention I Get Money and Amusement Park. I think if he would have led with I Get Money he would have sold more that song still goes hard in clubs. I think like with Drake he did right with his singles as well it catches the attention of people to make them want to hear more of album.

  4. I think most of that is because Eminem has a loyal fan base and that he puts out quality music consistently. If you combine that with the fact that he’s been missing for a minute, you’re going to get GREAT record sales. I also know you didn’t want to factor race into this but lets be honest, Eminem is basically the only legitimate white rapper/hip hop artist out. He has undeniable talent so white people (who buy most of the music) will always go hard for him because he represents. This is all my opinion though.

  5. JD, I agree. The single was on point, and he has a good reputation with albums. Plus he wasn’t all over the radio and everywhere else. For example take Drake, good artist, but over him already. Album took tooooo long. As a consumer we want quality and we know with Em, we will get it. Not SJB, and all the “singles” making artist.

  6. I agree 100%. On follow up album they usually try to go more pop in order to make more money. And it ends up sounding like trash. I feel like the artist leaves the urban fans for the white fans. Which is sad.

  7. I agree JD its about giving the fans what they want. Often times artist want to switch it up without taking into consideration their core audience. I love Monica to death but we knew that the album before this last one wasn’t the real Monica we know and love. I’m glad she redeemed herself, because the knew album is on point. I generally enjoy a real artist that’s honest with themselves. Like Ciara said “Basic Instinct” is key, even she had to step back and get her old A-town swag back. And on that note I love my city! Peace up A town down! 🙂

  8. Eminem is gonna always have his fan base and they will ALWAYS support his projects….he created a niche and although we like to say its not about race, the fact is that eminem is in a category all by himself. No other rapper sounds like him or looks like him. Drake’s initial buzz was because he brought something different to the table (his mistake was giving away too much free music and letting his initial buzz cool off). I think Em could’ve dropped almost any single and still be trending towards decent sales.

    Much Luv

  9. Eminem is still sticking to his old formula of not letting his single out run its course before the album is released.. Another thing is that he’s not just a singles artist with album fillers but he makes complete albums but most of all his marketing & promotion is on point, something a lot of artists over look, still using old marketing tactics & incorperating the new media

  10. I think it cuz Em is sooo real and u feel/see the hunger in him! Personally I like the Em, back in the *Cleaning out my Closet* and *Stan* days. After that I wasn’t feeling him too much. I like his new single *Im not Afraid* but its not something I have to have on my ipod! Crossing over helps a lot in getting big numbers. It’s been A lot of Artist that have let me down on their follow up albums. I love albums with stories, and lyrics that make u think, something that makes u dance. I dont want to hear an album thrown together.

  11. good example>>>USHER..and i don’t care what anybody has to say! He knows good and damn well he could of put out better. You need to stop hangin out with justin beiber, looking like ebony and ivory..GET BACK IN THE LAB URSH!!!!

Not unless he doing like Marvin gaye and put out a wack album so Tameka don’t get shit..*shrug* cuz im so confused on why he put that mess out!!

Like JD said…WHAT PART OF THE DAMN GAME…you know the rest…

  12. Youre right JD BUT, you gotta take into consideration that most of his fans are white. White people actually buy ALBUMS. Black people Boot-leg the shit out of their favorite artist. (with the exception of Black Women) All women weather you’re White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc… would actually spend hard earned money for a Trey Songs/Usher/Eminem/Tim Mcgraw/Carrie Underwood/Justin Beiber/etc CD but wouldn’t mind buying a new Soulja Boy record from the beauty salon. That’s why I think its always a good Idea to make music uplifting women. Look at what happened to B.O.B. That track with Bruno Mars is still in heavy rotation.

  13. It is absoultey not because of his race. People love Eminem, he is very talented and I think it had a lot to do with his first single. He came out with something that was actually a hit. Anyone who say otherwise is a puter hater. To the haters: God loves you too.

  14. I agree with you bruh, 75% (more like 85%) don’t appeal to their core fan base. Me personally I don’t fuck with Em because he is one of the reasons half the rappers come out the way they do with this I gotta have a beef to sale a record ass bullshit.

  15. What is going on lifers? Much success to you all. Looking forward to Dondria’s album and Trey Songz New album. Want’s to know what it takes to get you guys to host future mixtapes? Do what it do.

Okay now to get back to the subject, I feel that you are right. If you do not show your fans what to expect…they will most likely bootleg it first rather than buy it. If you give fans what they want then they will stick by you and support not just you but the music you sell. Sometimes it is not always about waiting for the album to drop or waiting for fans to come to the tours or promotional signings. When I see an artist that is willing to let us get sneak peeks on the making of the music or to hear their mixtapes…it actually makes me want to go out and by the album. As far as let down’s hmm it is hard to say. What I can say that I have continued to love the music produced my Monica and Trey Songz…they continue to give us good music and growth.

It is important for an artist to believe in their self and not to be changed by the labels. True fans are the ones that are truely going to support you all the way when you are true to yourself. The Labels will support you as long as you are profiting them.

  16. Where do I start with who let me down? My list is long but I’ll tell u one that hurt the most. John Legend!!!! OMG I put so many of my friends on to him before his first album came out. 2nd album came out and I was like WTF is this shit. 3rd album was a little better but still not as good. I’m just about done with him now.

  17. Em created a movement! Whenever an artist creates a movement, not a career, he/she will always be on TOP! Fact that his movement is successfully received and always sold out, he has the power to control his product, he’s not on a leash like many artists! Fortunately the label needs him, so it’s always what EM wants! When you have a story to tell, you will sell! Swag Rappers, Dope Rappers, Stripper Rappers, Money and Fake Rappers with no contents get hypes and their audience never buy! But Kanye West will always sell! That’s my opinion!

  18. AYe JD you know I’m gone shoot the shit as best I can on this topic. BTW great topic. I think that Eminem is a talented wordsmith no doubt but I don’t fuck with his music like his fans…He has a core group of fans like Elvis had and still has…you can not count out race in this discussion. It is what it is in regards to a cat that just took the reigns of hip-hop music when he came out. My issue is that his content has no range or rather level of versatility. What heard on the first album is what you get over and over and over on the next albums. The shit don’t move me to much. He is somehat overrate IMO but I’ll get beat down by the cock eaters who co-sign him because he’s still a novelty rapper…a rare breed…a modern day Elvis…so with all due respect I think the guy is talented but lacks the change up pitch. But if the shit is accepted by his fans then i say congrats. Numbers don’t lie.

  19. Skip all the other stuff for right now…but JD you need to get in the lab right now and do a SoSoDef remix to Usher’s OMG…Im telling thats what will have the clubs on smash

  20. I’ve never owned an Em album, never bought a single but after hearing I’m Not Afraid, I will be buying this album. As far as artists letting me down with follow up albums…Mariah is on that list, John Mayer, Usher, Brandy. I still want my 9.99 back for that shit Mayer put out!!! I only liked the first single…$10 for one dayum song!!! smmfdh Janet, Mike, and Mary are the only artists I’ve liked every album from.

  21. To be honest I didn’t even know Em album was out. I’m in ATL now & primarily listen to V103 & they don’t play his stuff. I’ve listened to 107.9 and haven’t heard it there either. I need to start listening to radio outside this region again. I’m from NY & I had a more variety in terms of stations to listen too. To make it so bad I only listen to the radio when I’m in my car & while at work. I listen to my Ipod at home to deprogram the same 6 songs radio plays all day.

Artist follow up that have ARTIST LETCHU DOWN WITH THIER FOLLOW UP ALBUMS

Mariah, Chris Brown, Ciara, Toni Braxton, Joe, R.Kelly, lil wayne (rock albumwasn’t it) Erykah Badu, Jaheim,Mary J( didn’t know it was out), Raheem devaughn (under rated & 0 promotions)

  22. How many artists? Lawd the list is toooo long. Remember when it was called the second album jinks, then second turned into a third, then a fourth. And then finally you as a fan just stop buying their music period. There are very few artist now I literally track from one album to the next. One artist in particular I’ve followed seemingly forever, and somewhere this artist kinda lost touch with the core audience they started with. And now for the last couple of albums it appears this artist has been trying to get back to his/her roots but again somehow the jewels that are on these albums never get released as singles to radio so nobody knows. *sigh* Does that mean he/she fell of or is it deeper than that?

So JD at what level in an artists career do they get to say which songs should be released to the public? Do independent artist get more say so? What kind of pressure does the label put on artists to make them risk losing their fan base?

  23. I think the reason why Eminem always wins is because he has been honest about who he was and is since the beginning and that honesty is what he gives in his music. People can relate in some way. Every time, I purchase an artists album, I always wind up saying why didn’t they put this song out instead of this. I swear it happens about 99% of the time. Also I don’t understand today why artists and labels release like two videos and there is still no album. It’s like your debuting your video in June and your CD does not come out until December. I understand trying to build a buzz, but what happens is artists wind up building it and then losing that buzz quickly. Just release the album and let it do what it does. If people are interested in the artist they will go out and buy the album. Point blank period. The more music that artists put out thats lackluster the less in less interested I get. You know a song is wack when I don’t even want to download it for free! And there is lots of music coming out today were I find myself saying next. When it comes down to it, artist need to just do them, I understand the politics of the game, but if artists bend for the label, by putting out something that does not represent them or where they want to go, the consumer won’t want to go either. So artists should stick to there guns, be themselves, honest and remember to make music that isn’t just hot for a couple of months, but something that when you hear it 20 yrs later it still evokes the same feelings that it did when it first came out. Thats real music! I was just saying yesterday after hearing SWV’s “Weak” on the radio. I wonder if this song came out today if it would evoke the same feelings and be as popular as it was in the 90s. And I think it would, because real, honest music will always stand the test of time. If the music that is made today can bring back a tenth of the feeling that music did in the 90s i think artist would see a spike in record sales. The artists that are still selling today, makes music that brings back some of that feeling 90’s music brought. When its all said and done, life isn’t fair there has to be a Beyonce and there has to be a Christina Milian, both are talented, but one just has a lil bit something more that sets them apart that makes one an international superstar and the other a city by city star. I enjoy talk to me keep the topics coming, I’m always up for a good discussion.

  24. LOL! I agreed with AnitaLTL! I stop listening to Usher since Confessions, not because his music is not good but he let me down! The beautiful thing is that he pick up or draw in the new and younger audience! (Saying I m 26)! GREAT MOVE USHER! Em picked up and set up his fans on Marshall Matters LP (his 3rd studio album) sold more than 18 million…smh don’t be suprised for his 600K his first week this year! Like Drake, Wayne and Kanye, stir up the industry, stir up the audience, hit them with materials that they weren’t ready for, controversy sells! Take notes RAPPERS, PLAN YOUR GAME LIKE YOU RUNNING A MEDIA COMPANY! KEEP IT INTERESTING AND MOVING!

  25. I think this is a great topic! I felt so let down with some of Mariah’s work and some of Usher’s.I think they are both so talented but some stuff was just a huge disappointment..:(

  26. true he’s giving the fans what they want, hatred, disses and fool things, and even use other artists just for publicity, pity that at some areas he became popular not because he’s that talented but because he dissed on other artists and that’s what other fans want, to follow his new words of hatred not just because he’s fool of talents, can’t say any more good words..

  27. yes i do agree its all about that 1st single AND its about giving fans an album of ALL new music. personally i DONT buy cds because 9 out 10 times you spend $19.99 +/- for what? 2-5 new songs. the way i get my songs are 1st ill listen to the cd if a friend has it or ill youtube the cd and listen that way, if i think its great BOOM im at the store buying it. i get so annoyed when artists wanna give crap and expect the cash flow to come they way. NO! give us great material, great ideas, amazing music, be innovative, and STOP settling for the formula stuff. formula stuff i mean stop using the same form everyone else is using to create they music. example, nicki minaj she this is what she does usually starts of a little slow, builds, then explodess in just about each and every song. i get annoyed with that because i know what she is gonna do. nicki SURPRISE US! im not a fan at all of eminem or any other artist who constantly starts beef with others (to me its childish). or an artist who is constantly guilty of legal trouble. i DONT support the bad boys and girls.

  28. not only what people want for a moment but what they need, because what they need will last longer… hmm.. but if possible, both what they want and what they need, like Mariah’s music, there are maybe some not good comments but lambs just can’t resist her, they keep on comin back because she has given them not only what they want but what they need, something that dig deeper into their hearts, *wink* 🙂

  29. Good Question. But ask many artists, and they will blame everybody but themselves.

  30. Yo JD I think it’s just alot of artist are falling off i mean like when the (new Boyz) came out their were Hot To Most! & Now I Guess They Aint Got Nothing Else To Be (JERKS) About! haha See Now Plies Heys Doing It The Right Way I Think Come On Hes Are REady put out his 4th album! Plies Knows Wat Hes Doing!

  31. OMG!!!! Finally somebody understands what I’ve been saying…..Monica was almost a perfect example….except she went with what she knew was missing by her fans….it also has to do with the order & timing of the selected single. Puff & Day 26 I thought both of their albums were dope. But the the 2nd album why would u pick a club joint & they had 3 dope ballads on there??? BRANDY wth was/is she thinking? Its gonna take a whole lot for her to win me back over as a fan for 1 because “Human” was not an R&B album….it was poppish & now I feel like she wants to abandon her r&b fans to chase a possiblity with the rap game…..if that ish didn’t work with Tyrese its not gonna work for u….Artists need to just stop being lazy make hit albums & not just songs…..grow some balls & stand up for what’s right…stop blaming others for ur craft failing….if I don’t go to work & I can’t pay my rent I aint gonna blame it on haters??? Nigga my shit gotta get paid

  32. First I want to say JD I respect you and all that you do. Dondria is going to be DOPE. You know talent. You should do an reality show. You know the business and you are not afraid of change. Now, the industry has become gimmicks that why so many artist are falling off. Eminem is a lyricist. He writes. Everybody think that they are JayZ and Biggie with “I don’t write nothing down”. Those guys are quick thinkers. Some people need to sit down and think about what they really want to say. I think Em is a perfect example of that. He literally write some thought provoking lyrics. This is why DRAKE is successful. Because the industry is mess up, some vets don’t know what to do. They want to appeal to the teens, but thats not possible. You have to make mature music now. I call JayZ Grown Up/Mature Hip-Hop. Em give me what I wanted inspirational lyrics that take me back to the Eminem Show and 8 mile soundtrack. Monica gave me classic 90’s music. Real Music is coming back like Light-skin Guys.

  33. I think race does play a factor in it, I think he has a hardcore fan base with white kids (and Asians) because his music speaks to them in a way that black rappers can’t. They are going to eat up anything he puts out. There are far more whites in this country than any other group, which to me accounts for the numbers. It’s not about money, hoes, clothes and selling drugs with him. I think they relates to white kids and still rhymes well enough to appeal to other groups too.

As far as let downs. I have to go with two of your peoples, Mariah and Usher. Usher with the latest album and Mariah with ‘Memoirs’ I don’t understand why they feel the need to work with the so-called ‘hottest producers’ of the time. The music is not true to who they are and seems disengenous, real fans feel that and are turned off by it. As a fan it’s annoying to wait for a new album and when it drops it’s not all you expected. Just stick with what works. Sade has been using the same damn style forever and her fans are content. Maybe I just don’t do well with change.

  34. Wow where do I start my list of artist is tooooooooooooo damn long I would be typing for days for real!
I can’t tell you the one that hurt me the most is Alicia keys oh my I went outside and threw that shit so far lol I did the same with Mariah’s MOAIA I really want my 14.05 back for that shit after EOMM I was dissapointed with her E=MC2 was okay brandy is another who follow up was like WTF oh and R.Kelly, Jay-Z and oh the worst beyonce all I had to do was read the list of the song names and I put back on the shelf and walked away I later took my sister cd lol and listened to it And gave it right back I couldn’t believe the crap I was listening to only songs I liked was single ladies video phone and sweet dreams other that that epic FAIL the only four I can sa

  35. JD! I noticed my reply had gone! I figured because of my ref links! I apologized! I won’t put them next time! But @Maxxine, yeah Day 26 was a promising group, I was all for them, they were holding it down! Great vocals, great album, they could have last a long time! I thought Human was a good song but not good as a first single! Brandy can go to POP a lil’! JD, I got a question : Is it more fun to DJ than to produce or do you like to DJ better than producing “lately”? We be getting a lot of DJ videos! and you be killing it!!!!!!!! LATA LIFERZ!

  36. Its because he’s already set a standard and he truly hasn’t had any wack albums so people will continue to buy his music. Also, people know he is creative and want to hear what crazy sick shit he’e gonna come up with

  37. Sorry my laptop went dead but I take that back there are a few I can say who most maybe 97% of the follow ups have been on point some are Michael, Janet, Mary J.Blige, sade, usher ( His new album I loved!!!! the song mars vs venus, okay, and she don’t know I be jammin to those songs in my truck ever day!), and Anita Baker, and I want to put trey in there but I dont really know so imma leave him out but that new song for step up I ain’t feeling

On Eminem Just like the rest who I named above you can relate to his music I don’t think race plays a role in it at all I love him and he has a large black fan base too cause almost ever person I know listen to him got all his albums and they love him he is a great artist and he is real and his style hasn’t changed I think when a artist starts to change from when they first started out it dosen’t work out for them and they fail!!! With the exception of the ones who I named above

  38. Eminem’s first 3 albums are ‘classics’ or close. this helped him gain a large fan base that is very loyal. i mean go to any article that mentions eminem and see how many replies there are on that b*tch. when you are buying an eminem album you know its going to be of a certain quality. also due to his content he has a broader fan base than say gucci mane or other artists who only appeal to a small part of the market.

  39. JD should check that nigga out ! Sick beat! It was on my twitter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDyakLhYFCM

  40. Although I have liked a lot of hip hop songs out there, I don’t buy too many of them because I really cannot relate to the artists and I don’t buy stuff I can’t listen to in front of children. However, I did love TI’s last cd before the prison thing. So, I can’t speak on Eminem (even though I do like some of his music).

I do buy a lot of urban/r&b/soul/jazz, etc. I was very disappointed with Usher’s last two cds. The previous cd (before his latest) didn’t have enough dance tracks for me to get excited and this latest one is too nasty for me on some tracks. I love OMG and a couple of other club/dance tracks, but I was totally turned off by the threesome Nicki Minaj track and the video is spooky to me–yuck! I hate this whole nasty movement. I don’t even understand why Usher has to be like this–he can sing and dance and it is not necessary. I did not mind Beyonce’s last cd. It had some good songs on it. I can’t complain really–it was typical Beyonce tracks.

A lot of people hated the latest Chris Brown cd but I liked it (maybe the timing was off due to the Rihanna mess), but I don’t think it was as great as the first two cds. I am just a fan of his anyway. I completely HATED Alicia Keys’ new cd. She is just sloppy throughout the cd–bad notes and boring melodies as heck. I refused to buy Rihanna’s cd because she is just getting too dark for my taste plus she just can’t sing and seems to fabricated.–boring as heck in concert. She should just model. Mariah Carey’s cd was boring too. I liked a couple of tracks but I think the book with all of the ads she put in it was more interesting than the music. I still love her as an artist though. I was also very disappointed in Ledisi’s second cd–maybe three songs on there were worth listening to over again.

I actually liked Monica’s cd. I have usually only liked one or two songs on her previous cds. I loved Jill Scott’s last cd the most of all her cds–very sensual and emotional–just some good singin’ and writin’.

I just like for people to sing and dance their butts off. I don’t need all that fabricated b.s. record companies manufacture–image, I’m so rich boasting, stripper booty-shakin’, computerized vocals and crap. I really just want to see some talent (I dont care how fat or ugly they are, but I know that is not how the business works). Maybe that is why the business is hurting (besides the digital downloading issues).

  45. i totally agree with u. i think its the number one problem, cos a lot of HUGE artists like Eminem cant give the same product after 5-10 years and he does. its all about the hard working and honesty and stayin true to the music u do.
jay z , alicia, beyonce, they stay real, true, and give the same product u want to get!

to me the big example is – whitney houston, i dont wanna say she lost IT. but i didnt feel any of the songs.
usher, mariah smth goin wrong with these two as well.

  46. I think the comment you made about giving the listener what they want to hear helps a lot on record sales. Another reason I would believe his pacing looks better than other artist is that Eminem has branded himself and proved he can deliver a good product. In other words, the work he has done in the past help with the current album he is releasing. I tend to buy albums once an artist has shown me they can deliver great albums which is not so much the singles but the album cuts. The single pulls you in and the album cuts should motivate you to buy the album. Eminem has created a huge fan base and his music doesn’t sound like the majority of the music you hear on the radio. He does “him” and doesn’t follow trends musically and a fan can appreciate that.

As far as new albums, I don;t even know where to begin. I myself was born in 83 but have a passion for hip hop. When I refer to hip hop that I have a passion for, I am referring to the 80’s and 90’s. Sometimes it is very difficult for me to stay tuned in to my local hip hop stations in Los Angeles.

I can rant and rave on this subject forever so I will stop myself before I go on and on.

    Signing off…

    Mike

  51. THESE ARTISTS NOW A DAYS ARE PUTTING OUT MUSIC THAT SOME OTHER ARTIST ALREADY DID BUT JUST PUTTIN THEIR OWN SWAG ON IT.. SOME PEOLE MENTIONED THE NEW BOYZ, I PERSONALLY DONT THINK THAT THEYRE MUSIC ANYTHING BUT WAT SOME KIDS LIKE AND THINK IS KOO. YEA ITS THAT SWAG AND ITS SOMETHING DIFFERENT SO THATS WHY PEOPLE FUCK WIT THEM..

EMINEM IS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE.. HE PUTS OUT MUSIC THAT LOTS OF PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO, THATS WHY HE HAS SO MANY FANS AND HIS ALBUMS GENERATE A CONSISTANT NUMBER OF SALES EVERY GO AROUND. HE TALKS ABOUT ALL THE SHIT HE WENT THROUGH AND IT JUST SO HAPPENS TO CATCH THE ATTENTION OF A KID WHO MIGHT BE GOIN THROUGH THE SAME SHIT. HIS MUSIC IS RAW AND UNFILTERED AND I BELEIVE AS LONG AS THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOIN THROUGH SOME OF THAT SAME SHIT THEN EMINEM WILL BE ABLE TO MAKE A PLACE FOR HIMSELF IN HIP HOP..

HIS EMOTIONS ARE A BIG PART OF HIS MUSIC AND I THINK THATS WHAT THIS ALMBUM IS FULL OF.. I JUST HEARD HIS NEW SINGLE THE OTHER DAY AND THOUGHT TO MYSELF ” HERE GOES ANOTHER ANTHEM FOR EMINEM FANS ‘ HE TOUCHES ON REAL LIFE SHIT THAT SOME ARTISTS WONT GO NEAR AND MAKES IT A HIT BECAUSE OF HIS WORDS AND SAYS WHAT SO MANY PEOPLE THINK… I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT THIS ALBUM IS GONNA DO GOOD.

    THROWIN UP THAT LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!

  52. This track for the Ocean’s 7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDyakLhYFCM ! HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT! I got you WIll J! We know you’re the best! I see you in the SO SO DEF ROSTER along with Brian and dem! Get out of Flawda! LOL LOL LOL!

  53. Hell yeah, there is a race issue! He’s the only white rapper it’s like Tiger Woods in golf! But def, Monica and Mariah had let me down, Monica big time! S/O to Will J Best Producer Ever! Need to get with JD and Them! the Ocean’s 7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDyakLhYFCM !

    <3 Your Girl D

  54. Personally… I think its because with relapse… he let a lot of people down… were used to eminem coming with a few different styles and for the most part… he stuck to those annoying ass accents. He admitted in his single that he wasnt going to do that… Which gave all of us hope… that he was going to release a cd with the more intellectual style that he has. So I agree with JD, we were sick of that annoying ass voice he did the entire relapse CD… so.. he gave us a cd and told us from that gate… he wasnt going to do that this cd… just my oppinion 🙂

  55. “IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED IT’S TOTALLY ABOUT GIVEN THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT.FOR SOME REASON ARTIST DONT LIVE BY THIS,THEY ALLOW THIER LABELS TO TALK THEM INTO DOING THINGS THEIR CORE FANS DONT FUCK WIT”

pretty much sums up how i feel about this topic…PEOPLE WANT A WHOLE SOLID PIECE OF WORK, NOT ONE HOT SINGLE AND THE REST OF THE CD FULL OF CRAP!

  56. I think Eminem is getting these sales because of who he established himself to be. He has very strong qualities as an artist and he knows how to deliver what they want. He also has by far one of the most profound rags to riches stories to date. Marketing wise, it’s the same as why more people buy Heinz ketchup before they buy Hunts ketchup or Taco Bell over Pee wee’s taco stand. These are loyal fans. Artist with that kind of fan base can pull of record cd sales while others have to sale online and settle for a less profitable result. Finally, I think people want to see him prosper. CD’s are hard to sell now-a-days especially because of the internet.

  57. I think the reason why is because due to his style its always going to be a breath of fresh air period. I think most of the artists out now are being pushed to do what the labels are telling them to, similar to what you said JD. I also feel the fans/listeners are getting tired of that same process, but its still selling because music is music and people want something new even if its more of the same. By the time an artist like Eminem comes out they all go get it because its needed more than it seems. For some odd reason the labels dont feel going another route is needed if a certain style, swagger, trend, or gimmick is working for everyone. If talking about politics was selling everyone would be doing it, thats the funny thing about it.

  58. First of for all those who say race has anything to do with it, STFU!! It doesn’t. No one says anything about race when Robin Thicke is singing or when Jon.B was in. No one cared about race when Jin was hot on 106 freestyle friday or when they were bumping MC Serch or when Vanilla Ice won his grammy. What about when ya listen to cypress hill? Race doesn’t have anything to do with it, if it did, every rapper would be broke because we know mostly whites buy these hip hop records. You see Jay and 50 in London in a sold out crowd performing when the crowd is 80% white. No one says anything about race then.

Well Em is just a dope artist. He isn’t doing the new bullshit which is make a single and peform that at thirty clubs for 8 or 10 grand a show. I hate it when rappers do that dumb shit. Check this, if wocka flocka or however you spell tha bum ass name, released an album, how many of ya would go buy it?… I don’t you would. Reason? He has no substance to his music. The same with bow wow now. Dude was nice with JD. His albums appealed to his fan base. Notice I said ALBUM not just a hit record. His ALBUMS had substance and related to his fan base but when you have to link up wo soulja boy to make a HIT you know your album aint gone be shit. Sorry Bow, gotta keep it real here. The reason why EM is going to sell is because he hasn’t sold out. He droped an album, eh, maybe it was a dud but he knew it but he didn’t sell out to make a hit or money.
Real artist like Jay, EMINEM, Nas, Fab, Andre 300, T.I. (he falling off in my opinion) and Luda will do great on the charts and sales because their music has substance to it, not that bullshit like “marco Polo”, “Swag surfn” and so on. Fuck a party song, give me real shit to vibe to.

Also we wating on that video for “Close your eyes”
Real music is more than hip-hop. Ask B.Cox, J.D., Johnta, Jay, Drake (I’m still not a fan but I respect dude!! He killing shit right now), and every real MUSICIAN!!

  59. I think EM don’t waiste himself to much….. the artist gave himself a break…. he let his albums sink in then he comes back on it! Not all artists can do that! But at the end of the day, he comes back hard! I m an EM’s fan not because I m white but because of his stories and not afraid to speak his mind. Artist that let me down hard is Tyrese! Such a good singer, he should have done more RnB music and that techno crap on iTunes….smh! And Johnta needs to get out more… Trey is good, but we want more sexy RnB males with great music

    BRONX IN DA HOUSE
    MARBLE HILL STAND UP!

  60. Will J Best Producer Ever! Beautiful beat, I can see my Ocean BOYZ on it! JD and JOHNTA! Damn I like the hook tho…. the dance vibe, sound like some MJ piece! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDyakLhYFCM !

JD, Will J is Great, I just heard his youtubes and myspaces, he can be another successful one like Brian! You’re the man that brings out talents!

    BRONX IN DA HOUSE
    MARBLE HILL STAND UP!

  61. It’s a combination of the following:
    1. Make music that your fans like whether it makes the radio or not…the south has shown that albums can do numbers with little to no radio play.
    2. Pushing back albums is a bad move, it gives time for ‘leaks’ to occur and eventually people forget about your album, especially when there are similar artists releasing albums and ‘mixtapes’ weekly. For example I did not know until yesterday that Drake’s store release was out…and we been talking about him for 2 years now.
    3. If you leak something it should be a smash… Don’t leak mediocre tracks or garbage or I will not buy your cd.
    4. Rap about more than one topic on your cd, I can’t take 12 tracks about exotic cars and champagne.
    5. It helps if there are 1 or 2 tracks that get the club either dancing or crunk.

  62. c’mon will j!! dont post your music on here in a discussion because it has nothing to do about what we are talking about. its kinda disrespectful.

  63. Hey Lifers,

I think that artist today listen to other people music far much while they make an album, which effects what the do. Instead of doing them they do all this other whack shit. If there is one more group or duo or whatever that comes with a dance or gimmick i diont know what will happen to music. I dont know the last album i bought and i hate it. I hate thagt my ipod is filled with singles. Em makes full bodies of work that all flow and makes since, paints a picture. REAL MUSIC

  64. AnitaLTL. & Will J I Co-sign!!!

Idk how the hell I forgot about Usher & Mariah…..Confessions is in my top 3 fav albums of ALL TIME…..how do u go on a rampage about marrying home chick then release a song called Love in this club?? Trading Places shouldve been the lead single, & I aint gonna get into Moving mountains….& even with Raymond V Raymond…..Dude lost me with Lil Freak….& other than the 1 Song that album dissappointed AGAIN….. I won’t be buying his next album

  65. Em has been in the game for a min & he knows exactly what works for him & he stuck to it. Unlike Usher who went Diamond then decided not to bring you back to executive product every album there after. I as a fan am loyal to the artist who are loyal to me, meaning keep putting out the shit that works. So yes JD, I agree with you.

  66. I have never and will never buy anything that boi creates, and the fact that he is selling so much shuld be a cause of concern because that venom is entering into a world that is already toxic and making it worse, like MJ said great artist don’t diss other artist…… so if your whole being is based on that you are not great and I only listen to great artist, who spread love and happiness what the world need.

  67. I was just having this conversation a couple of days ago. It is so many artist that get caught up in re-inventing themselves that they hurt themselves. Meaning. It’s cool to live outside your box, but you have to go back to what made you who you are. Nothing disappoints me more than going from one extreme to the other. The person that I believe that has it down to a science is Clifford Harris (TI or TIP). He gradually moved up in stages to more mainstream music and he is not afraid to put out a banger. A lot of artists are afraid of their music and listen to the execs instead of listening what the fans. I am not saying that you are going to have a 1,000,000 scans everytime, but you will have fan loyalty which will always keep you relevant.

  68. @Pinky: THE FUCK IS YOU ON?

  69. Ok…………….the reason alot of the older matured artist don’t succeed when they come back because they get all big headed with a couple bucks and rented cars then try to act like they really wanna be 20 years younger runnin around screamin…….waca flaka waca flaka waca flaka….lookin all dam ass dumb. They need to quit tryna perpetrate so woman there age can actually give a darn… Hell I can’t even let my daughters go to any concerts for fear of a nephew old enough to be her grandaddy runnng round the stage wit his pants on the ground…lookin like a fool…my bad almost lost my train of thought anywho!!!!! running round tryna to get her home for the minute….. Get the fub outta here fo dat!!!!Start some brands people and encourage the young

Love yall have a wonderful day,
    GeeGee

  70. honestly artists need to go back to the days of tupac, michael jackson, janet jackson, monica from the 90s, TLC, B2M, the 90s brandy, all that 90s music. im tried of hearing quck money makers for rap like soulja boy most of his music is quickies but i must admit some of it is okay. artists need to stop thinking about the money that will be filling their pockets and think about th essence and quality of music they are putting out.

I WILL NEVER BUY EMINEM LIKE I SAID BEFORE HE IS SO DISRESPECTFUL. YOU DNT FUCK WITH THE GREATS LIKE MJ!

  71. @Alesia Ervin: We can’t go back to the 90’s. The biggest problem is that you don’t need a record deal anymore to make it big. What they need to do more of is having artist training like motown did. I think J.D. would agreee. Also J.D. said something on LTL that artists need to practice. No matter if you are a dj, rapper, poet, singer, writer, or whaterver you do. PRACTICE like Run Dmc and LL did.

  72. well JD, its true on the second part of your ?stion that a lot of artists disappoint on their follow up efforts because of what ever reason and that really sucks because what we bought into has been changed and now we have to adjust to a different growth and eventually we end up confused and dont know what our artist stand for anymore so we essentially get confused and leave em alone to figure out what they wanna do with their life. lol. as far as eminem goes, he’s doing exactly what you said, he understands his audience and gives them him but still in a fashion that they expect. so he is more stable and consistent. no matter what his content, good or bad, at least we can expect from him what he gives to us so the core followers are not disappointed. thus giving him a financial reward for giving them what they want. later yall.

  73. I agree w/Lex minus the quality music. His albums are trash and he is soso w/collaborations. He is to hip hop what Tiger Woods is to gulf, something different. I dunno i just do not like his music, so i may be bias.

The most disappointing f/u albums for me was Alisha Keys, and Vibez Kartel.

  74. I didn’t think Em would bring in big numbers with this album it just seem a lil OFF to me I.M.O but I was never a big fan of his anyway..His music is…(stumbling 2 find tha correct words) OK! anywho lets talk about tha artist who’s had tha WTF moment ( USHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Ima need him 2 try that again because that BS he’s putting out is REDIC! if i buy your album and i’m skipping most of tha songs on it, imma need you 2 reup! somebody please tell me what that neggro was thinking?! WAIT he wasn’t smfh and moving on!

  75. I have to agree with LEX on this one, JD I know you don’t want to involve race but you have to because most hip-hop music is bought by white people. Since Em is the only white rapper out there who can really rap and hold his own with the best, what do think his sales are going to be. White people are going to buy it and black people are going to buy it and that equals great sales. Many rappers have a great fan base but if most of your fan base are black teens than let’s face it, in this economy your not going to do well because a black parent who is making it from pay check to pay check or out of a job is not going to be buying their kids CD’s, so if you have a huge fan base that consists of black and white and everything in between and you are putting out quality music then you are winning no matter what. I think Em is talented but if his only fan base were black teens he would be in the same situation as many other artists. You have to look at it, step outside of rap, why do you think R&B artist have it so hard. If you haven’t crossed over and have a huge fan base that includes all races then you can barely make it as an R&B act these days. It is what it is and people in the music industry have to start taking that into consideration. You can be black and have the best album ever made in history and if you haven’t crossed over you are going to have a hard time making those sales.

  76. OK!!!!!!!! I keep seeing race on here as a factor. Let me first say that when an artist gives there fans what they want, Consumers will support. Now on race! IT DON’T MATTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It appears to be a stigma nowadays but marketing is a must. If your an artist and have a brand that is only seen in the US I don’t see how you would think Ur record sales would not suffer. Afraid to take singing lessons because you believe your good enough (Ur Stupid; Be better than the rest). “Acting classes are only for actors” (Ur stupid again, watch your Interview tapes; U see yourself figitting and not knowing where the camera is. “I don’t need speech classes” (U sounded very stupid and unprofessional on your last radio interview).

Em does well because his Brand is heard and appreciated;which is targeted all over the world. When Ur following is that large and u consistently give your fans what they are missing out of the current state of horrible Rap, Pop and even R&B music; Ur numbers will show.

Consumers want to feel as if there artist are tangible, charming, loving, humble and deep down like them. Consumers must relate as well as enjoy Ur music. If you put out an album and 2 out of the ridiculous 10 tracks u put on Ur album, why should I support u, or Ur STUPID ass label. Be real with yourselves Record Execs! If it came down to Ur last few dollars would u buy this new record or a sandwich? A consumer should never get sick of your artist. They should only attempt to get closer. Branding is so Important, And with average music; you are wasting money and listeners time.

Invest time in making quality music, Or you will forever remain in the 1990’s mind frame waiting on something to hit. While Ur fans spend there last dollars on EM and a new “Iphone” and “IPad” (That could have had Ur new release on it); and still continue to use Lime wire for your upcoming releases.

    God bless,
    @charmdaproducer Ur favorite Artist Developer.
(JD you need to so put me on staff, LOL; had to do it)

  77. My opinion..theres so many artists that r guilty of this..but u stand behind them no matter what..LOVE, SUPPORT them no matter what..HEY JD!

  78. @Olu
we can go back and grab that flava and vibe from the 90s. motown did a great job training its artists. youre right nowadays you dont need a record deal in order to make it. its annoying because artist need to earn a record deal and stop being handed one because they make one hit wonders like jerk or stanky leg. most artists today NEED TALENT and they NEED TO LISTEN TO THEIR FANS. im so tired of artists giving us junk and expecting a pat on the back for it. NO YOU GIVE ME JUNK IMMA SLAP YOU!

  79. @DJ6FIVE and @Lex have made some valid points!!!
As much as we try not to factor race into the equation…the truth is, White people buy albums, and Blacks don’t! (Before anyone calls me a racist; I am Black myself)

The problem many artists have is not diversifying their target audience. I need a lot of artists to stop marketing themselves for only a certain demographic…especially if that demographic consist of people who don’t buy albums, and would rather share music/CDs between themselves).
I think Trey Songz has that problem, and I believe Nicki Minaj will suffer the same fate, as her fans consists of teenagers who think they are ‘barbies’.

Another problem some artists have, which leads to lackluster sales, is not growing with their fans. ie. Toni Braxton. Rather than ageing with her fans, and coming up with an image and sound that would suit the fans she started out with, she decided to shave her hair and dress like she was in her early 20s. (See where that got her…abysmal sales).

  80. I agree with you 100% because we are the people that buy or download it so why not ask us? I know It may not seem like we don’t want to do it but we do. That’s what make us fans happy about the artist. Like Khleo_t was on ustream asking for idea’s for his mixtape and he got a whole new idea from his fans. And with the choice he made with us the thing got to 100,000 downloads in the next couple of days. Now I’m not saying you have to get on ustream and do that what I’m saying is that you have to give us what we want. And if we don’t get it then you won’t have that many sells.

  81. USHER LET ME DOWN!!!! THAT IS ALL

  82. Dont forget the lyrics that M. has from the beginning where always different. You name its pils, ex-girl friend etc. he took it to a nother level. Everybody is curios what he was going to bring. He’s a good artist who knows what to bring. its also the people you have in your team (marketing strategy)

Look @ drake i think has is making use of the same strategy that lil wayne did.
First the singels, some collabo , album, know a documentary (some people could see more of himself) think about it and tell me if i’m wrong ?

  83. Well I think the ones who who didn’t do to well with their follow up album are prolly in archives somewhere listed as such, but my taste actually changes as I do. Don’t know if i really wanna name any because of that .

  84. What’s up with everyone talking bad about Usher’s album? Look the shit aint his best work but damn it aint that bad. He got some songs on there like “pro lover” “make love tonight” “okay” and “omg” Ya can’t sy those songs arent’ hot, plus the other singles he has out. I do think he should have gotten with JD for at least 5 songs. Look at conffensions, hell, “you make me wanna”, and “nice and slow” is crazy nice to this day!!! “Raymond vs Raymond” isn’t a bad album, it just didn’t match up to Conffenssions. “Her I stand didn’t either.”

@Alesia Ervin: I think J.D. has that Barry Gordy and Q Jones mentality. I think he runs his operation almost like the Motown era. He’s been working with Dondria now for at least three years if I’m not mistaken and she’s just now about drop her album. Johnta has been down since like 05 04 maybe longer and his album is about to drop. J.D. I think just signed about three other cats and I bet you won’t hear anything from them until the time is right. Thats how it should be. Not no “man that record hot, lets drop this album” then come out and be a fucking failure like Da band, or Lil Waynes Current album.

The new age era of music sucks. Promotion sucks, and the artist suck too. Too many rappers not enough talent and skill. We need real music and not bullshit.

  85. yeah right !race does have something to do wit,
relapse was pushed back, so fans had to come fast on this album to get back at record company for pushing relapsw back.

  86. I luv Em. I think he still sells records bcuz he’s crazy talented and you know he works hard to give fans a good album. He still has a hunger that makes u wanna spend ur money and see what he’s gonna say next. It aint about beef, i luv his wit and the crazy ish he be saying. Em dont need beef to sell records, he listens to the fans and then delivers. Plus I like that he’s not on my screen evry two seconds. he takes breaks between albums and lets the fan miss him and anticipate his return. I also like that while he tries new things, he still stays mostly true to why ppl fell in luv with his music in the beginning. I luv the new album and will continue to support real artists.

As far as let downs, Usher need to get bak with u JD like NOW. He has sum okay singles but he aint had those HITS and songs that I luv since confessions. Also monica and brandy who have fell victim to what the label wants vs the fans, mary j blige–her last good solid album to me was share my world, after that its been shaky for me. I think the last album of hers i bought was the mary one. I still luv these artists i just havent likes their most recent albums.

  87. @Olu
youre right JD does have that berry gordy and quincy jones mindset. niggas just sleeping on him.

  88. @Alesia Ervin: Tell these niggaz wake the fuck up!! If you look at it, JD has never had a hit song that floped!! Not to be on his dick (pause) but I can’t think of a single that he produced that didn’t do good. I remember when BET had “Making the video” he had about five to six songs on there for about a good month or two. Chingy, Tyrese, Mariah, Bow I think, actually two Chingy records in like three months. “those jeans” and “pulling me back” Hey JD that dude. F what they say.

  89. I love Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw album, Taylor has great song and she is pretty too.~“

  90. i love the Tim McGraw album of Taylor Swift, nice songs, nice album~;,

  91. Tim McCraw is the best album of Taylor Swift-~*

  92. Tim McGraw is one of the best albums of Taylor Swift, love yah taylor’*”
