Morehouse Whiz Kid is Causing a Stir: 13-Year-Old Dominates College

MY INSPIRATION FOR THE DAY,

THIS REALLY HITS HOME WITH ME BECAUSE I STARTED MY JOURNEY AT 12. I LOVE TO SEE KIDS TAKING CONTROL OF THEIR LIVES BECAUSE IT’S NOT WRITTEN IN A BOOK THAT LIFE STARTS AT THE AGE OF 20 OR 21. THE FUCKED UP PART ABOUT THIS STORY IS I BELIEVE WE WON’T HEAR MUCH ABOUT IT.  HE SHOULD BE ON 106 AND PARK AS A GUEST THE SAME WAY THEY BRING ON BROTHER JEFF, OPRAH SHOULD DEFINITELY HAVE HIM, THE VIEW, EVERY WHERE. THIS IS PROOF THAT WE LIVE IN A WORLD THAT DOESN’T REALLY CARE ABOUT POSITIVITY. THIS IS TRUELY AMAZING AND I APPLAUD HIM.

At thirteen years of age, Stephen Stafford is causing quite a stir at Morehouse College. Stafford has a triple major in pre-med, math and computer science. Though he loves playing video games and playing his drum set, he is no typical teenager.

“I’ve never taught a student as young as Stephen, and it’s been amazing,” said computer science professor Sonya Dennis. “He’s motivating other students to do better and makes them want to step up their game.”

Stafford began his college career at the age of 11, after being home-schooled by his mother. Stafford’s mother said that when Stafford began to teach her instead of being taught by her, she knew he needed to be in a college environment.

The recipe for our kids is simple:

1) Spend as much time studying as you spend playing sports or working at fast food restaurant jobs. If a kid can work 8 hours for McDonalds, then he can study 4 hours a day in the library.

2) Don’t let anyone convince you that you can’t achieve whatever you put your mind to. No one has the right to define you or your child. Because my grades were horrible in high school, I was told that I wasn’t smart enough to go to college and (like millions of black boys across America) recommended for special education. Later on, I became the only African American in the world to earn a PhD in Finance during the year 2002. I didn’t earn the degree because I was brilliant. I actually earned it because I finally realized that I had the ability and determination to make my dream into a reality.

Just by studying 4 to 5 hours per day (less than the number of hours they would put in to working a minimum wage job), almost any child in America can get a college degree and become a doctor, lawyer or whatever they want. If George Bush can go to Harvard, then every kid in America can graduate from college if they choose to do so. I’ve taught college for 16 years, and I can tell you that the term “college material” needs to be abolished. Every child is college material if they want to be. That’s the truth.

  1. JD you are absolutely right he is not going to get the recognition he should!

Because if so he would have got it years ago when he started Morehouse College.

Where is the Oprah’s,the 106 and Park’s, and the View’s?

Yo JD! In my eyes he is an AMERICAN IDOL fuck the rest.

  2. yea this def gr8 I no hes oing to b a millionare b4 hes 20.

  3. I agree JD, i was saying exactly the same thing to my girl the other day when i heard about it.

  4. THE HOUSE!!!!!

Man you might be late on this but I been checking dude out…. I don’t think people understand how tight this dude is. MOREHOUSE IS A HARD SCHOOL!! Let me repeat, Morehouse is HARD… I went to a Fine Arts Magnet school and use to get ALL A’s without ever studying…Morehouse changed all of that. I can still remember staying up all night studying for them corporate finance and accounting classes!!

The point is this kid is really the truth and I am glad he will be my future Morehouse Brother!!

    SPOCK…..

  5. Beautiful story & totally amazing!!! It’s always the figure heads that try to keep us in the box but, as always they’ve been proven wrong… Thanks for sharing this totally motivating piece because, it’s exactly what I needed……..

  8. This is an wonderful story and im so glad you posted it. I don’t think i would’ve heard anything about it. The media is so quick to report negative news about our black youth, but never anything positive.

  9. I’M NOT SURPRISED AT THIS YOUNG MAN’S ABILITY TO ACQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE AND ADVANCE. I’M SHOCKED THAT THIS YOUNG MAN HAS NOT BEEN A TRENDING TOPIC OR LIKE JD MENTIONED ON THE TODAY SHOW OR GOOD MORNING AMERICA…BET SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ON THIS STORY. HE SHOULD BE INVITED TO THE WHITE HOUSE TO PROVIDE SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR THIS ECONOMY AND HEALTH CARE DEBACLE. IF ADULTS SHUT THEIR MOUTHS AND LISTEN TO THE YOUTH, WE ALL CAN LEARN SOMETHING. JUST ASK STEPHEN’S MOTHER.

    THANKS FOR SHARING JD!

  15. All I can say is amazing. I mean every child is not meant to be in that position. Everyone life is different but if you’re educating yourself and bettering yourself it shouldn’t matter what age you are.

  16. Man what do you say to this? Kids do not have a leg to stand on. The man is not holding us back we are holding us back and this child is living proof. Get with it people or get left behind.

  17. Yo JD big big big shout out to you on this one Sir. This is a story like you said need to be featured on BET, Oprah, CNN, Today show, everywhere because this will show the mainstream america that we all are not about the music, jokes and bullshit and that we are capable of doing positive things too. This young dude as inspried me to do better in school and once my kids get to the age for school to motivate them to work as hard. And for anybody reading this lets get the word out and try to get this guy some exposure by word of mouth, facebooking, tweeting, telling your friend that can’t hold water. lets make it happen

  24. I love this article….truely amazing and something positive to read. He is mos def a rising icon one to watch as he continues to embark on life’s journey . He’s blazing a trail that only a few have gone. I agree Oprah , BET : 106 & Park. Something for my own girls to look at and know that anything is within thier reach!

  25. I love hearing these stories about our young people!!! We need to stop sleeping on them and show other youth that with hardwork and determination, anyone of us can make it!!! Thanks for sharing Jermaine and like @eastpointvet said…get him on LTL!!!

  26. What a great story! I’m a principal, and I created a college prep middle school for inner city students. We believe that every single child can go to college! Our mission is college prep and character. This story is a wonderful one. It’s also amazing how quickly we forget that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. graduated from Morehouse at the tender age of 17….exactly! Which means that he too started college at a very young age. What I find sad is that, we know longer value education as a means to opportunity. I’d be more interested in knowing that this young man is getting the social and emotional support, that’s needed to adjust and progress. I actually think Oprah, the news, etc. is the last thing he needs. He’s not an entertainer, he’s a college student. It’s great that he entered college at a young age. I’d rather see a story, once he’s graduated, and he’s ready to talk about his plans for the future. The news wasn’t interviewing Dr. King for being a young kid in college, his was too busy learning, and getting ready to lead the civil rights movement. Let’s get out of exploitation mode, and let this kid…be a kid. Let’s have him take that college education, and use it to do, what it is he wants to do with it! Let’s not have his fame be about “his age in college,” but about the application of his wisdom. Just a thought.

  27. oops “no longer” not “know longer”

  28. I work in school district administration, and I love to hear about gifted children!

  29. SIMPLY AMAZING!!! THIS YOUNG MAN IS BRILLIANT!! THERE IS HOPE FOR OUR YOUNG BLACK MEN!! HE IS GOING TO BE AN INSPIRATION TO MANY WHO FEEL THAT THEY CANT DO IT. YES YOU CAN!! JUST READING THIS STORY MAKES ME WANT TO WORK ON GETTIN MY MASTER’S DEGREE!!

  30. Wow…speechless. Hope they turn this kid stroy into a movie.

  31. This is amazing!!! T4P.

  32. DAMNN THIS LIL KID WELL TEEN
JUST TOOK A BIG s**T ON MY LIFE
GOTTA GET MY WEIGHT UP THIS YEAR
    THIS IS MY NEW INSPIRATION
    FOR ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

  33. What a remarkable story. It seems to me that someone should have researched and found a school that could meet this little boy’s ability. A school that he could enter- act with children his own age with seminal abilities at all times. We as parents need to think seriously about placing little children in an adult environment such as an adult college. I f this child is a genius then he should be given the environment of learning with children of that nature. This is a time and age of technology and this little boy abilities can be challenged in a way that could be more healthy and beneficial to his development. Dr. King was a young adult attending Morehouse College not a little boy.

  34. We of African heritage (and that is more then what people want to admit and some of them are caucasian!), are powerful in all areas. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT SOME KNOW IT AND DO NOTHING ABOUT IT OTHERS HAVE A POVERTY STRICKEN SPIRIT. WHEN YOU HAVE THAT SPIRIT THEN ALL BETS ARE OFF!! AT THIS TIME, I HAVE DEVELOPED A PROGRAM FOR THOSE WHO ARE COMING OUT OF PRISON, MY PLAN DOES NOT INCLUDE THEM RETURNING, AND KNOW ONE HAS TO BELIEVE IT BUT I MUST ALWAYS KNOW IT AND WITH GODS HELP IT WILL BE DONE!! STOP LISTENING AND GET AWAY FROM ALL HATERS BUT ACCEPT THAT THEY MUST BE AROUND TO KEEP ONE MOTIVATED!! STAFFORD IS ALREADY AN AFRICAN KING AND AGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, KEEP IT MOVING STAFFORD BUT REMEMBER YOUR ROOTS CHILD YOUR MOTHER IS THE ONE WHO GOT U IN GEAR!! NEVER FORGET THAT!! GOD BLESS AND PAY IT FORWARD AND i MAY BE CONTACTING U ONE DAY TO HELP OTHERS!!

  35. i really hope jennifer lopez turns down the american idol judge offer…shania twain is the backup and i really liked her on the show this season
