TALK TO ME!!!!

SO I’M IN MY ROOM TODAY AND MY HOMIE GETS ON MY COMPUTER AND GOES TO CONCRETE LOOP AND IT’S A MUSIC POST WITH USHER AND SOME OTHER PEOPLE. MIND YOU HE’S NOT IN THE BUSINESS SO HE DON’T REALLY KNOW THE IN’S AND THE OUT’S. HE STARTED LISTENING AND STARTS SCREAMING  JD JD!!!!!!!!!  WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? I’M LIKE WHAT?? HE’S LIKE WHAT IS THIS USHER SONG? I’M LIKE I DON’T KNOW WHATCHUMEAN? HE SAID THIS SONG ON THE COMPUTER. I SAID I NEVER HEARD IT, HE THEN WENT ON TO SAY THIS AIN’T WHAT I WANNA HEAR FROM HIM BLAH BLAH BLAH. HE NEED TO STOP LEAKING SHIT LIKE THIS. I WAS LIKE WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!! SO THAT PROMPTED THIS, I WAS SAYING SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN MY LAST POST BUT I TOOK A CLOSER LOOK. WHAT DO ESTABLISHED ARTIST GET OUTTA SENDING MUSIC TO BLOGS ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE PLANS OF SELLING THE SINGLE. I WENT TO TWITTER ABOUT THIS EARLIER AND A FEW PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH ME ASKING HOW ELSE WOULD THE ARTIST GET THERE MUSIC OUT? THEY SAID THAT THE BLOGS ARE THE NEW MTV AND BET. I AGREE THEY ARE THE NEW SOURCE OF INFO FOR THE ARTIST BUT THE FREE MUSIC PART NO! THE FIRST TIME I HEARD BLACK EYE PEAS BOOM BOOM POW  WAS ON HOT 97 IN NY THEY WENT ON TO SELL SOMEWHERE LIKE 2 TO 3 MILLION SINGLES THERE MARKETING PLAN WAS DIFFERENT THAN THESE OTHER RAPPERS AND YES THEY ARE RAPPING. SO MY QUESTION IS HOW MANY OF YALL HAVE BOUGHT THE ALBUM AFTER LISTENING TO THE SINGLE POSTED ON A BLOG??????

  1. After is on a blog, for me i wont buy it. But if i hear it on a radio, ill buy the song. It depends to where i heard it first.

  2. WELL, TO BE HONEST, I ONLY WOULD BUY A TRACK IF I CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO THE TRACK. IT HAS TO BE A SONG THAT WOULD PUT ME IN THE MOOD FOR WHATEVER, EVEN IF IT CAUSES ME TO SLEEP. MOST SONGS THAT HAVE BEEN LEAKED SUCKS LIKE DICK… SOME BE IIGHT. BUT THEY ALL SOUND LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE THAT’S OUT RIGHT NOW. WHY WASTE STUDIO TIME TO MAKE MIX TAPES? LOL. IT’S JUST WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME JUST TO LEAK YOUR TRACKS. THAT’S THE MOST RETARDED IDEA THAT MUSICIANS CAN EVER DO TO THEIR MUSIC. IT’S ALL COMMON SENSE. IF YOU LIKE A SONG, EVEN IF IT’S LEAKED, PEOPLE WILL SUPPORT IT, NO MATTER WHAT; I WOULD SUPPORT A LEAKED SONG IF IT’S THE BOMB. BUT IF IT SUCKS ASS, I NOT GOING TO SPEND A DIME ON THAT. I BROUGHT KEISHA COLES RECENT ALBUM, BECAUSE I HAVE LISTEN TO HER WHOLE ALBUM ON MYSPACE BEFORE I THINK ABOUT SUPPORTING THE ALBUM. MYSPACE DOES THAT NOW WHERE PEOPLE CAN LISTEN TO THEIR FAVORITE ARTIST’S BRAND NEW ALBUM UNTIL THE ALBUM HIT STORES.

  3. i brought SLAUGHTER HOUSE ALBUM…. ALL THERE MARKETING AND ISH WAS ON YOUTUBE AND THEY HAD A HOTT ALBUM TOP 5 RAP ALBUMS THIS YEAR……. YOOOO JD 1 MORE THING Y ISNT ANYBODY TELLIN GUCCI MANE THAT HIS FLOW ON THAT SONG WIT USHER IS OFF?

  4. That’s a really good question, I wondered about that. I recently stopped allowing music downloads on my site but I always figured it was to garner attention for a much bigger project like an album. I suppose sometimes it’s cool to give a song away for free if only it sparks interest for consumers to purchase the album. Didn’t know the song on CL was gonna be for sale.

I’m also assuming that the same goes with mixtapes? Artists will spread a few songs (looking at the bigger picture) in hopes of stirring interest for the album?

Blogs ARE the new BET and MTV, by the way, hehe.

  5. I Feel Where Fire Is Coming From…And There Are Songs That You Hear In Your Car That Sound WAYY Better Then In Ya Crib.

But I’ve Personally Been A Fan Of Usher Since I Was % So I Would Buy Anything That That Man Drops Since I’m A Loyal Fan Of His.

As A Matter Of Fact With Confessions, Usher Had Actually Released The ENTIRE Album On AOL Two Days Before It Came Out And He Went On To Sell 1 Mill The First Week. It All Boils Down To The Quality Of The Music And The Fans Of The Artist. Plus Not Every Fan Of A Given Artist Are On These Blogs And If Some Leaks Are Fire, They Spread Through Word Of Mouth And That’s Just As Powerful As A Blog Post To Me.

By The Way People That Song That JD Is Talking About On Concrete Loop Is Supposedly From The “Here I Stand” Sessions Which Is Why It’s Probably Still Up There. All His New Shit Has Been Taken Down, TRUST ME I Kno LOL.

  6. Also Don’t Forget That Man Had Recorded Close To 90 Tracks For The Confessions LP And Concrete Loop Gets The Majority Of Their “Leaked” Music From That “hotnewhiphop.com” Site That Isn’t That Reliable When It Comes To Supposedly NEW or Leaked Tracks From Hip Hop And RnB Artists

  7. Thanks Yeah! but like u were saying JD i don’t see the benefit either i can understand maybe sending the blogs so tracks from a mixtape but not ur album. if you want to make money the keep it n sell it like erbody else but if u don’t care then…. but for some people the only way they can get herd is to get it out to the blogs and things but USHER is an HOUSE HOLD name he doesn’t need to leak tracks he’s USHER DAMN IT!!! he’s gonna sell if the music is good put it out on the radio let it get some spins u know us Lifers are gonna back the OCEANs 100% so we r going to get the request in n he get the spins…. i think by some folks leaking tracks they don’t fully trust the people they have working on there music I’m jus sayin

  8. I can only speak for myself but I don’t listen to the radio at all; I haven’t in 10+ years. Radio stations ran by big companies like Clear Channel play the same sh!t over and over again–no diversity and no real opportunity to find out about many new artists…and a bunch of commercials. I find out about music and songs because of blogs, music sites, social networks (online and offline–word of mouth) and artists’ & record label pages–even from exploring the music at the local public library here in Houston. I own literally 1000s of albums because of these mediums and I do purchase what I hear if at all possible. I know I’m damn-near the exception because most will pirate music in a minute–burn it and play it load in their cars with the DJ shouts and all, LMAO.

  9. If I really like something I’ll buy it…. Other times I’m glad I heard it on a blog and didn’t waste my money on it lol.

Jd how do you feel about artists releasing something early on their official site, sort of like a thank you to the fans to give them a little taste of what’s to come?
That’s different to them leaking to other sites just for the sake of it right?

  10. Boom Pow is a good example…that is one of the few i actually bought on iTunes to hear/reference the mixdown & compression freq. range. mind you, i was able to d/l the song for free elsewhere @ 192kbps all day.

  11. Certain artists I will buy even after getting a bootleg copy or hearing songs on a blog or whatever. For other artists the blog samples or leaks or bootlegs or whatever is a test, if they pass I will buy it, if they fail I will probably trash the bootleg or click on to the next blog. The leaks or blogs should build anticipation not cause me to pass on the album.

  12. anticipation used to be part of marketing, not anymore.

  13. Everything is still based on the quality of the music. I use it to sample before I buy so I don’t end up wasting money and being disappointed afterward. Either there are a lot of folks not paying attention to their craft and making lackluster music and not knowing it or they know it and think it’s ok.

Ryan Leslie, Trey Songs, Mr. Hudson, Slaughterhouse, Kid Cudi and Chester French are albums I bought this year. Trey, Cudi and Chester French all dropped mixtapes that got me primed and were stellar and got me excited to hear the album. I got the leaks early and was happily surprised they kept up the quality and made a purchase.

It’s all about the material. Alicia Keys new record only has 3 songs I like on it so I won’t be making a purchase. Same with Chris Brown and 50 Cent. You can run around promoting until you are blue in the face but if the material is not there you aren’t just going to push records just because your face was everywhere.

I owe Lady Gaga some money cause that chick is weird but she makes good music so I’ll have to get at that Fame Monster on the 16th when my check comes through.

  14. this is where the initial idea of the internet has becomed vague and is a grey area because the initial concet of it was to be able all different sorts of media for free and to be able to dl and share info and resources to a wider community w/o paying for it. back in the days b4 the net we were all forced to buy the shit because there was no other way to unless we copied it from a friends cd or cassette tape. and we knew that were was a marketing push behind the stuff.

but as the internet grew and deleveoped we could get stuff w.o even buying it regardless of the blogs because the freedom of sharing info has become that easy. so in a sense there is nothing that “attracts” ppl to the idea of buying stuff anymore. music and videos r the only items in the world where ppl go meh I dont have to buy it ill either dl or copy it off a friend. and music and tv hasnt done anything to make us really want to go out n buy the album from a particular artist. the only reason y sum ppl still do is because of habit and that they prob dunno how to dl or burn songs or videos. and really most ppl r just after 1 or 2 songs from a album anyway.

so now I think music and tv should really invest in how u can get us back to buying albums. I think recording companys should actually invest in graphic designers.

  15. BRAND LOYALTY

    BRAND LOYALTy

    BRAND LOYALTY

    BRAND LOYALTY

    BRAND LOYALTY

    BRAND LOYALTY

It all boils down to fan base…..an artists’ fanbase is equivalent to the basement of a home…..if a homes basement is weak, so is the rest of the house…same goes for music….if you have, as an artist, a strong fan base, whether you release your WHOLE ALBUM FOR FREE, your loyal n dedicated fans will STILL go to the store or log on to itunes and purchase the album…its not about marketing schemes and blah blah blah…the focus as an artist/label/manager should be how do we create BRAND LOYALTY!!!

  16. If this question had been about Usher specifically, I would say that he is leaking his music, so as to gain back his lost fans. The marriage to Tameka made him lose of lot of his fans, especially after he had one of his fans sites shut down. Leaking music is probably his way of re-connecting with his fan base, so they have something else to talk about other than his ex/ marriage etc. It is also a way to get them hyped about him as an artist and not focus on his personal life.
I see he is back on twitter after a long hiatus… so I may be right about him trying to re-connect with the people that made him.

If you also take a look at the people whose music has leaked the most this year, it is people who have had their images tarnished in the media.
Chris Brown and that whole DV/ RiRi case
Alicia Keys and her ‘supposed’ affair with Swizz Beatz

Mary J. Blige has an album coming out and all I have heard are her singles. Same goes with a number of artists out there.

Leaks to me occur more for artists who want the subject matter of the gossip around them to change.

  17. As to the second part of the question. I bought Trey’s album after hearing some songs on blogs. Mind you, the whole album is on youtube. I like it enough to actually own the songs. I will be getting MJB’s as well. Just because I am a fan.
I went on ConcreteLoop and heard Chris Brown’s ‘Movie’. I wasnt sure if I was gonna buy his album, but after hearing that song…I AM BUYING IT! I guess that tactic worked in my case.

  18. ZERO. I have bought ZERO albums after listening to them on blogs. considering I only go to yours and necolebitchie i only really hear music on hers. And most of that shit is trash. EXCEPT the Reinvented Sex Remix….LOVE IT!!!!

  19. When it comes to singles i wouldnt buy it even though the song is poppin, but if there was an album that got leaked and the album is poppin i would go and buy it to support the artist for making such a DOPE album…

  20. I think the reason artist rush bloggers now is becuase they have lost the respect for their own labels. Not to put them under the bus since they still cut checks, but when you here what gets played on the radio and you as an artist feel what you have has more to offer you want to put it out there. so you take it to the label to hear the A & R tell you that’s not the hit. So you do what you have to yourself with out having to be scolded later on. sometimes it works and sometimes not. I definately will buy an album I’ve heard on a blog spot. Especially if it sounds like the ish!!!

    Have a blessed day!~
    GeeGee

  21. i did that Trey when he leaked his anticipation album…..and i think the purpose of leaking songs is the feedback because of the artist wanting to know how and what direction should they take their album….but i dont agree witht he free music thing because you guys worked just as hard and deserved to be rewards for the hardwork put into it…..

  22. Artists should stop leaking music cuz it’s not helping sell more records. Why buy the cow when I can get the milk, hamburger, and steak for free? They should really focus on making better music…I honestly think people are tired of spending their money on crap.

  23. Im all about supporting the artist I like. Leaking songs gives me an idea on what I may be getting on the album, but I ordinally dont judge off of that. I wouldnt leak music if I was an artist though. Perfect example, the entire R. Kelly album leak months ago. I honestly likes the leaked one better than this. MY opinion though. But it let me know where kellz was about to take me. Artist work to long and hard for their albums and songs to be leaking . Once you have established your fanbase you should make sure your giving them what they want and taking it to the next level. Trey is killing everyone by being on top of the social media game. Twitter and Youtube is where its at right now. Its all about the anticipation of what Im my artist is about to give me.

  24. If you have an artist where $100,000,000 has been generated around them, I think they shouldn’t be subject to the opinions of the 25,000 or so music blog commentors on the net . I think YOU have to pick what the hit is gonna be, just like you been doing for years, and if a song leaks to the net that means it will be added to radio soon thereafter. Ain’t no testing the waters, cause if you keep throwing free material out there from a person who has sold millions of singles, then you’re just devaluing their product. Now if its a unknown artist who has never moved units in the marketplace b4 – you can throw a few songs out there to see which one sticks because you can only appreciate in value when starting from zero.

I remember when I 1st seen that Nice and Slow video by Usher. I was like look at lil Usher, speaking a foreign language, fighting over a broad. That visual to the audio is what helped make it a #1 single in my mind. Now look at the movies he been in, sum alright little roles, but those visuals ain’t advanced his position at all. He need to make like an action- thriller type movie or something, be the main character where the plot revolves around him. His name should still spark enuff interest. Because the music industry ain’t treating old acts too kindly.

The computer experience of music is a lesser one. You can’t compare a person clicking on a button and hearing a new tune on their $10 PC speakers to hearing that tune for the 1st time on radio in their ride or home entertainment system.

  25. if USHER want Confessions numbers he need to go back to the Confession blueprint!
And YALL KNOW WHAT IS SO SO DEF MUTHA FUCKAS!

  26. I don’t think it’s a good idea to leak tracks that might be on the album or a single before you release to radio. I think what you are hinting at JD is don’t put stuff on the blogs or the net for free just make people buy it. I see you did that with Dondria new single. You have not put it the full track on Youtube. Even though I have heard the track on blogs. I think the Black Eye Peas is a bad example though because they are a pop acts not a hip hop act. The bottom line is with Pop those people buy on Itunes because it’s just easy for them to buy on iTunes. It just like how Drake has sold 200k on a free mixtape but your average person out there don’t know where to find the free version. That ish don’t work for a track that don’t crossover. I do think tracks heard on the radio, people value more, than a track heard on the internet. Radio legitimizes a track.

I think as far as your friend goes, alot of times when people hear something for the first time it can be seem wack until you hear it in rotation on radio.

  27. It depends…..Sometimes blogs post songs & they’re not available to purchase right away,IMO that’s really stupid, so if I gotta wait like a month then I might of lost interest in that song by then in which case HELL NO I’m not buyin it, but if I am still feelin the song then I do buy it.

Honestly, I feel like it still all comes down to the quality of the music. Whether it be on a blog or a leak, If the music is good enough people will buy it, If it’s sub-par CRAP then they ended up with the sales that were warranted. For the established artists it almost seems like they just send their music to blogs to pick up extra fans (nothing wrong with that) because they already know that, for the most part, they have their base from jump.Who knows, maybe it also helps them gauge whether to scrap certain tracks from their albums IDK!

  28. I agree. For an established artist its not really necessary to send the leaks to blogs. They might as well leak em to radio dj’s if its just a buzz record. BUT with all honesty Ushers situation is a lil diff. His last album imo is my least fav of all his albums, . So he has a lot of ground to cover because he left a lot of fans anticipating another classic to follow up Confessions. The 2nd single was moving mountains…where they do that at?? Shoulda been Trading places. So for him to gain back that initial following fans want/need to know which usher they’re gonna hear on the next album. So if he’s leaking cuts that arent gonna make the album cut but they’re good songs its gonna be a positive for him esp if its what we’re used to hearing. R&B & hip hop is 2 totally diff businesses & artist need to stop trying to market the genres the same way….that aint it…… I wish exec’s would start picking singles better . Same shit w/ MC, her last 2 albums had some ballads that couldve really went beyond but the single selection was horrible.

  29. @ LTLsisaleo
    I agree 🙂
Before the internet got as big & in-demand as it is now, I used to have to anxiously await an artists album coming out & just wear the hell out of that 1st single. & MANNNNNNNN sometimes I was thoroughly PISSED to pop that shit in the stereo, listen to the whole album & only like 2 songs *SMDH*, like forreal that’s all I get! Those days are long gone, which for us as the buying public is a good thing but not so much for the artists I guess. But the way I feel is…these artists should all know better by now. Stop with the half-steppin,( we want GOOD, HIGH-QUALITY entertaining music! )& stay away from all the YES men that’ll tell them whatever they wanna hear; Hell getchu a Tyrone LMAO!!! that’s gonna tell u “THAT AIN’T IT!!!!” & then change things accordingly.

  30. untill artist start making music people like, there will always be bootleggers.. i have not bought a retail album or listen to the radio in over 10 years. File sharing software is what getts you busted. if you know how to use Google you can find any album out for free!

  31. For me it depends on the quality of the song. If its a really goood song i think we as the listeners owe it to the artist to reward his efforts by actually buying the single/album!!

  32. I’m more likely to buy it after hearing it on the radio a few times and liking it…I would buy a song that i heard on a blog if i was really feeling the song but then to me it all comes down to the music…Dont think its necessarily the best idea to leak songs on blogs tho cuz suppose ppl arent feeling the song? they may be less likely to buy the cd!

  33. If I can hear the whole cd on the computer & I can LimeWire it & put it on my iPod…. that’s what I’m going to do. But if it’s a cd well worth paying for, I’ll buy it.

    I am Charismatic; & I approve… LimeWire. Lol

  34. Yes I have bought an album after a sound has leaked. I agree with $avy Da Boss.

  35. The answer is hell no! Most Artists have the game all wrong these days! If you give the people too much free stuff, how in the world could you expect us to want to pay? Give us behind the scenes, working in the studio type stuff. Get us hyped to get your product! JD, can’t give up too much info cause the next thing I know I’ll see you on CNN or somewhere talking about the new plan for the music business to stop music leaks. Then everybody will be screwed out of free music : )

  36. I think if you really like the artists you will support them no matter what song leaks out or if you really like the single that got leaked you will buy the whole CD…. or mybe thats just me…??
Also the same can go for Mixtapes…..why put out a mixtape and then put out a CD…..to me both draws in new and old fans to buy the CD.

  37. I haven’t purchased any albums that I’ve previewed on a blog. I have purchased albums that I’ve previewed on Amazon.com. If I’m loyal to an artist, I anticipate their work and will purchase it no matter what.

Putting your single on a blog in digital format is not the smartest thing in the world to do in my opinion (if you’re looking to sell a lot of copies). Once you put it out there for free, you’re asking for people to burn/bootleg it. If you’re going to sell it, go out there promote and sell your single/album. It almost seems as if some artists or record companies want the blogs to do their work promoting/exposing their single to the public. Wouldn’t it be better to put a clip of the song on the blog and not the full song?

I know some people who don’t even think about purchasing music anymore because its all out there for free. When you think about it, there is nothing in place to prevent any of this from happening.

  38. wat up jd for the most part all the songs i see on blogs i acutally buy the albums when they drop! i dont think its cool to never buy music! i am a music fien so i have 2 purchase the music i listen 2~ i usually use the music on blogs as a lil sample of what i am getting once i buy the album! it goes back 2 the convo u had the other day why are rap and r and b albums leakin while other artist in other genres dont leak or to the lvl that urban artist do! i still support artist by buying music!

  39. @Bootyinyoface yea i agree they should do more thats y I think cds now should just b in form of dvds or something similar at least. coz now I think artists and rec companiis need to employ the newer technologies and graphics the days mtv r gone they need to think bout extras to the cds that ppl r buying cds arent what they used to b anymore and now with the dvds you can add really good graphics to them add clips commentary and etc. thats where i think they should look at how to bring ppl back

  40. I have not purchased a Album in years people may get them for me or something but for me music isn’t good so why waste my money on something that is not good I think in the past 2 years I have only brought myself 3 which was 2 Janet albums including the best and the Maxwell album and I like all three then soon in a few days I’m going to get the robin thicke album after hearing sex therapy I cant wait for that album to come after hearing bad habits by maxwell I was out to get his album. And you know janet with all her countless hits I got that

  41. I have b/c I cant name the last time I listened to the raido. I fell like alot of the music sounds the same to me its either about how many more women I can get then you, how many more cars I have, how much more money I have then you. I dont know if its just the radio stations I listen to but thats just me :/

  42. I can honestly say that I’ve bought cds after hearing some of the leaks. Specifically, I got Trey’s “Ready,” Chris’ “Graffitti,” Chrisette Michelle’s “Epiphany,” Melanie Fiona “The Bridge.” This method cuts both ways though, if the music isn’t good, folks won’t buy it.

  43. I bought Melanie Fiona’S “The Bridge” after I read the review and listened to the song on Concrete Loop

What I don’t wanna hear in music is this rap-singing shit and the recycled beats and raps we hear all day

  44. it depends..the song that it being leaked or sent to the blogs has to catch me it has to make me say “ok i want this on my iPod” but before i buy the albumi have to hear at least 2 songs before i say “yes i gotta but his/her album”

  45. I do sometimes because when I hear music in the club or on the radio and the song is hott I always want to hear more and make sure they’re not just a one hit wonder.

  46. I bought Jay-Z cd even though it was leaked a week before it came into the stores and i had the whole cd on bootleg. Some artist are worth suporting others are not it jus depends on how much u like the artist.

  47. I haven’t…..

  48. I feel the artist are being told to release those bullshit tracks to keep the real album protected since those are probably the tracks they paid to get produced. All the tracks I heard leaked have been garbage quality or tracks the labels feel aren’t gonna hurt them even thought they spent the money on them. Some artist have leaked they real tracks because they feel off the radar like J.Holliday. I mean he had 2 of the hottest R&B singles in a while and no one even knew he dropped his album today. Seems like these days mixtapes are taking over the actual label released albums. It also helps that the majority of rap artist are being bought by white suburban kids (I’m white by the way) so even if you leak it they still gone sell close to a million units if they hot artist.

  49. This is off topic but related to the Usher song mention. Every ‘new’ song whether leaked or or put out there has been extremely hot. I dunno if his vibe has changed but I’m anticipating his new album. Shit, I’ll probably BUY it. I would rather listen to tracks before hand before I buy or download the cd and not waste my time nor money. Much respect to Usher for coming back strong with good quality SONGS.

One question: CAN I PLEASE GET A USHER/TREY SONGZ ALBUM OR SONG! That’s all I want for xmas. lol.. TWO OF THE BEST RNB singers killing a song together.

  50. If you don’t leak tracks I’m not buying your album unless your D’Angelo (In my opinion, the greatest artist of my time). I’m all over the web all the time, I live in the now and I believe that the web helps me weed out garbage music. Even if I download a whole album for free, I’m still going to buy it if its hot or if I support the artist. Ryan Leslie in my opinion does this best. He puts some of his music out ahead of the album, lets you hear him in studio and gets buy-in b4 the album drops. In this new music model nobody gives a fuck if your Usher or JayZ. You have to compete against everyone else who can push their music on the web too. I have just as many unknown artists that I have found through blogs on my ipod as I do established ones. I dont care if your Joe Blow in your bedroom making tracks. If I hear about you, download some tracks and I like it then I’m buying it as long as I can pay with paypal or on itunes. I’ve bought more music on the web then I ever did with CDs, and its because I can hear it for free first and then purchase instantly or begin following you thru social networks…… Usher hasnt’t brought the heat since Confessions, he needs to embrace the web, get back on LTL and grind it out. He still has it in him. If its hot I will buy….. If its garbage it will hit my computer recycling bin like the last Jay-Z album.

  51. Co-sign on Kevin: I agree 100%. That’s the ONLY thing he can do to win the fans back. He still has me though 🙂

if USHER want Confessions numbers he need to go back to the Confession blueprint!
And YALL KNOW WHAT IS SO SO DEF MUTHA FUCKAS!

  52. BTW- Im’a be real upset if that song Usher did with Johnta aint on the album. Something about “just the way you are” on LTL. That right there is the business.

  53. To give an example, I have downloaded any Dondria song that has been on itunes. “Weight of My tears” “Cant Stop” and “Your the one” I could find all of them for free, but you give us plenty of hot Dondria tracks on the blog. You and Dondria put in the work to keep my attention and let me know she is a serious artist. I will never hesitate to buy, and I will cop the album the second its out both digital and hardcopy. You dont make the assumption that she is gonna sell just bc she is signed to you….. too many established artists automatically assume that their name alone will sell records.

  54. I know Usher is busy and all but I can honestly say, if he were on LTL more often, I’d buy his album. Since he isn’t, I like his music but I don’t think I’ll be buying his new album.

I say, if you’re an Ocean, you gotta make your proper appearances on LTL.

  55. i’m a huge Usher fan, been one for a long time now and i know that i’m personally going to buy his album no matter how many singles he leaks to the blogs because he is a true artist and i support his music. but i agree that the blogs are the best at getting new music across because i know i’m on the blogs daily and i always hear new music, and it helps me decide if i’m going to support an artist or not. but if that strategy isnt helping them sell albums, then i agree with you JD, they need to go ahead and use the same concept as Black Eyed Peas. at the end of the day, whats the point of leaking new music for free if it isnt going to boost your album sells?

  56. For real I’m happy to see them do that cuz for the most things I’ve heard… I didn’t appreciate! And I was glad to know that I don’t have to go buy the album to know that! But there was a exception for one of the greatest I talk about Jay-Z and also Rihanna… For me there ain’t no bad way to promote… when you’re great, you’re great… it is what it is! People like to buy good shit!!!! But anyway, I think they can keep some, I mean much than right now for the official album! We need some surprise! For my opinion, the best thing to do is have enough songs to just make people know who you R or became, how you still great, u know! but don’t always put song that already on the final version of the album!
(I’m french hope u understand what I wrote)

  57. USUALLY THE SONG THAT’S ON THE RADIO OR SITE I DON’T LIKE IT BY THE TIME THE CD COMES OUT ANYWAY. SO I’M BUYING THE ALBUM IF I LIKE THAT ARTIST. JUST LIKE ON USHER ” CONFESSIONS ” ALBUM THE SONG “THAT’S WHAT IT’S MADE FOR” IS A CUT BUT IT NEVER GOT OUT. SO IM BUYING THE TALENTED ALBUMS REGARDLESS. FOR INSTANCE JANET JACKSON, SO SO DEF, OUTKAST, R.KELLZ, ICE CUBE, BUSTA, SNOOP/DOGG POUND, DRE, KISS, RAKIM, MARY J, ROSS, ETC IM GETTING THEM ON TALENT ALONE…..

  58. So JD listen.. we ain’t got a lot of money to buy any album. there are a lot of albums, and i think they are very well done. but i don’t wanna pay this money for the album, because i think on some albums are over 16 songs, and maybe 3 of them are well, the other ones are still shit.. My homie is a dj, and he has a blog, and a lot of rnb or rap stars made a shout out for him. so i don’t know why they do this, because i think stars lose a lot of money with this blogs. holla

  59. I never bought an album that was so easily accessible on the internet especially songs that don’t interact with my world.
What I mean is I think that what makes people buy albums is more the buzz around it than the song itself.

I remember Usher’s 8701 album in ’01/02 and the memories that I have with those songs. When i hear a song by Usher, as a man i don’t think of usher, but I think of the girls that listen and dance to his songs.

  60. I am not a blog hater by any means, but to be honest some of the music that gets leaked isn’t mastered most of the time and it isn’t constructed and arranged properly. I remember when Moving Mountains leaked on Concreteloop and I listened to it I could tell it wasn’t mastered especially on the production side. The final product was 100 times better because It was finished.

Aside from that, I think leaked songs can damage an artist’s reputation. A friend and I battle between Ne-Yo and Usher as the dominant R&B male singer currently. NE-YO has a gang of songs leaked online. They may not be the best at times but majority of them are well done so it makes him look like he’s constantly working out hits . Now Usher on the other hand is a perfectionist with his work. If there is a leak of some kind that isn’t planned he is going back into the studio to do something different (8701 was leaked and he reconstructed the album). So if something is leaked and isn’t up to the artist’s quality and isn’t consistent, fans are gonna doubt the artist’s ability.

It’s like playing poker. You might have a hell of a hand but you aren’t gonna show the whole table your hand.

  61. When I saw that music post on Concreteloop, I didn’t even click on the link to listen, because it seems that most of the music posted is always dated and wack. Also none of the artist featured really peaked my interest. Now I’ll be honest had Ashanti or a Nas song been featured I definitely would have clicked on the link to hear there new music, because I am a fan. When Nelly’s song She got me was posted I listened and downloaded the song, I like the song but I’m hoping that it’s not his first single. If I’m a fan of an artist I will buy there album, I have a very large CD collection. So Nas, Ashanti, Nelly, Alicia Keys, Kelis, I will be buying there albums when they come out, no matter what I hear on a blog, because as far as I’m concerned they always but together decent albums that I enjoy. I also feel that Rap artists are effected differently than R&B artists. Usually you hear and R&B artist’s song and if you like it, you will be sold on the album. But when it comes to Rap artists, they tend to have one hot song and the rest of the album may be trash. For example I enjoy listening to turn my swag on by soulja boy, but it does not make me want to buy the album, I enjoyed party like a rockstar, but it didn’t make me say I have to get there album. I have downloaded about 4 or 5 Alicia Keys songs that are said to be on her new album, and after hearing them, I am definitely buying her album. So I think for artists like Usher or Nelly, Leaking tracks early to blogs may not be a great idea, because it gives people a chance to say what your friend said about ushers leaked song. For me after hearing Ushers song Papers, I’m hoping that his album sounds a lot better than that if not I definitely won’t be buying that or downloading it for free. As far as artist albums being leaked early, I don’t think that it effects record sales (sorry 50 cent). If people want to purchase an artists album they will buy it, no matter what. Another thing labels need to stop pushing albums back, just put them out, stop making like 2 videos for an artist and then never dropping the album (example Eve). Either labels are releasing artists albums without a video or there giving artists like 2 videos with no album dropping. If lil waynes Rebirth gets pushed back one more time, either drop the album or don’t and stop promoting it. One more thing whoever is responsible for helping artist pick there singles, they need to get it together. Regret should have been Latoya’s first single, Mariah Carey has a lot of great songs on Memoirs Obsessed should not have been the first single ( I understantd why they went with it because of the Eminem thing but it did not work). I guess when it’s all said and done if artists are able to make great music, create a buzz for themselves(example drake, nicki minaj) and deliver it properly they will be successful. ( just look at Beyonce).

  62. Ok to be honest here I don’t know anyone who ”pays” for their music anymore. I know it’s wrong and probably very annoying and aggravating to the artists but it’s just way too easy to get it for free now.

  63. I think it’s great marketing. The average person does not have the LUXURY to buy these bullshit ass cds with two HOT songs on them. REAL TALK!

  64. I cannot login in. I had to create a new account in order just to post this. The message I am getting says “invalid username” but when I try to sign-up using that email/username, it tells me it is already in use so it can’t be invalid.

I will delete this second account as soon as I am able to log in to my regular profile. I can see my stuff up there, I just can’t accept friends, etc. because I am not logged in.

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you, Denise
