BASED ON FEMALES: speaking to datel YES. sex sells. it pretty much seem like females nowadays will not get noticed if there isnt some kind of sexual content added. take twitter for an example. the more popular girls that are on twitter are the ones who show more skin vs ones who have a regular headshot picture of themselves or yet just a simple picture with more clothing on. this also leads up to younger and more women who wants to become “models” or “video vixen” because they feel like they are being praised because of all the attention they get.

    its all about image! just like if you went to post this blog thread with this picture only vs only a picture of headphones or shoes. this thread will have more comments upon the women whos half dressed in a bed..

Like a chic in heels in her underclothing dancing around the apartment…whats for sale? The heels, underclothing, the apartment, or the furniture? Neither. Its about perfume…

  12. In all honesty, when I first scrolled down and saw the picture, my automatic reaction was a scrounged up face and wth! I dont see how they are appealing to women to buy undergarments with this ad. It doesn’t make me want to buy what she has on at all. Sex does sell for certain consumers, but only when it is used correctly in the right arena. This ad was a bad choice in my opinion.

  14. First Yes I would bye the first pair but this AD is no different than any other AD we see in the magazines or on T.V so with that being said Sex does Sell this add really is for men but all ads to me are the same and no different

    But sex sells where it is appropriate – Pretty Ricky, Antonio Banderas, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Ricky Martin, Shamar Moore, Tyrese Gibson, Morris Chestnut, Sanaa Lathan, and Gabrielle Union- all of these artists/actors can thank sex appeal for at least some of their success. Damon, Pitt, Jolie, Gibson, Chestnut, and Lathan have immense talent to back it up. But we all know that there are plenty of artists/actors out there that can’t sing/rap/act worth their salt, but are in demand because people want to see them. There are also plenty of people with more talent that don’t do as well as they should because we don’t fantasize about them – such as Jill Scott (one of the best voices I’ve heard in a long time), Shawn Stockman (skinny dude from Boyz II Men), Ruben Studdard, Van Hunt, Chrisette Michele (she stays clothed), and don’t even get me started on female rappers!

    I’m still pissed about Brat feeling like she had to get in a bikini to sell music.

    That being said , sex sells in entertainment but not in clothing.

    I think it works for cars too because guys picture themselves getting all the girls with that kind of car.

  30. No, this ad dosent make me want to buy these panties. It’s s raunchy I don’t even think about the product I just think “damn that a raunchy ad.” I don’t like American Apparel advertising. If your trying to appeal to women (the ones who will be purchasing the panties) I think less sex and more comfort for those type of panties.

The guy has built his company into a multi million business with these ads. That ad says girls that are sexy wear American Apparel. Their whole brand image is “laid back sexy”.

    They should have went for more (artistic approach)…

    1.Her in some fishing boot topless(lol) pretending to be fishing is more appealing.

  61. i have never been a fan of nor will i ever support american apparel due to their ads which are nothing but 70’s style porn masquerading as trendy/sexy/american appeal. every ad i’ve seen from this company has the same style and it disgusts me. their brand of marketing is seen everywhere in nyc from the back of the village voice (which is considered a prime piece of advertising real estate) to the free metro papers to billboards and nothing changes. it may have been a cute gimmick in the beginning throwing a shout out to the era of ron jeremy and then trying something else to reach the masses but they haven’t done anything else. it only cheapens the companies belief and action in providing american made clothing produced by people who are paid a decent wage and not working in sweatshops. but you wouldn’t know that because all you see is a gyrl in barely there clothing who also happens to be an employee at any 1 of the american apparel stores (the staff at the stores do more than just ring up your items and restock or fold).

    sex sells based on the demographic and the demographic that sells well is, and will always be, men. this is why you will not see a man in an american apparel ad again.
