  5. I couldn’t agree with you more, Jermaine. It’s a such a travesty that today there is an abundance of “alright’s” and “good’s”, and seldom any Great’s or even Spectaculars. And one would think that with the number of times we’ve heard an up and coming artist say, “I’m gonna change the game,” we all would have heard somethig beyond just WORTH PAYING ATTENTION TO. I love old school and prefer it over that “one hit wonder crap” (LOL) you hear these days. I vibe with old school mainly b/c of Style like you said but more importantly they cared so much about their craft and gave 110% every time..     You made some good points. I think their is a lot of talent out here just the wrong people are looking for them. I am the producers PRODUCER. I’m the nigga with all the records that is getting his fingers dirty everyday and you have to have someone like that around. Even Dr. Dre got Mail man. The purpose of the records is knowing the past and building from it. I think it would be a great time for a young woman with that Toni Braxton feel to come back out, just like I think that T Boz sound needs to come back out. If you got the skillz to back it up get at me. I’m the hungriest, most prepared nigga in Atlanta. I wish I had footage of Puffy when he was at Howard before he made it. That is where I am.

    I am glad that JD is looking at Aretha, because if he is looking at Aretha and is still working on Dondria, then the project is going in the right direction.

I think that is the most special thing about youtube that someone like me that wasnt there to actual witness this can go back and see everything. I look at alot of Gladys Knight and the Pips, alot of Jackson 5 and of course my idol WHITNEY “F*CKING” HOUSTON!!     However, I disagree with your point. I think a lot of the music today has soul, it has meaning. Some about love. Others about life in general. I think the kids of today have more soul because there is so much in life to be dealt with today; more so than yesterday. From simple things like breakups to serious things like death and school not being safe anymore. I think what kids don’t have today is groundation, they go out and do whatever it is that they want to do with out any reprocutions (prob. spell that wrong). Those same kids think it is ok to go out and shoot people to solve problems or beat the hell out of their girlfriends/boyfriends. Therefore, everyday kids and college kids have to think about “Am I going to be here tomorrow?” That, in turn, comes out in song, and anything else kids have to put their thoughts into.
    I think a lot of people don’t believe music has a lot of soul because they aren’t really listening to the lyrics. They are listening to the beats around it. I listen to music daily and when I listen I listen to the lyrics. Minus dance songs, there is a lot of soul in all of the songs.

    Good point using Aretha, but I have to disagree with your point of no soul today.

  34. Well, you know what? I don’t know what to say about this. I mean…there are artists out there who sing and play or do one or the other very well. The reasons why they are not signed to a deal vary and you know it JD. Ya’ll be looking at people’s weight and age and straight up discounting people because they don’t look like Rihanna, Dondria or Alicia Keys. The fact of the matter is you have control over who you sign as an artist in whatever genre. So, we get stuck with artists like Rihanna who can’t sing at all but she dresses well. I had a voice teacher who always said Americans worship mediocre talent. I love it when young kids sing their asses off. If Dondria sang her ass off it would not matter to me that she was 21 or younger. I mean look at church music. They just let kids shine as they should. Kierra Sheard can sing her butt off and she is fat as hell, but it don’t stop me from buying her cds. You kow what I am saying? It pisses me off that I gotta listen to some wack pop crap and these folks are gettign paid and they can’t sing without auto tune or some computerized correction. Can’t even sing live. I seek good music. Ledisi is a great performer and vocalist. Look how long it took for her to come to light and a lot of people still don’t know about her. So…I could go on and on. If you want someone who can give you chills just expect that it may not come in that Package that you record execs are always looking for. Give them some good music/songwriting and push their shit and you will have a legend like Aretha. For real!

Seriously, when I buy a CD, or download an I-tune, or listen to the music on the radio I sure the hell am not looking at what a person looks like. I’m instead listening to what they have to say. Jordin Sparks is a little heftier, but sings her ass off. She doesn’t get all the credit she deserves. There are a lot of young talent out ther that can sing for real. I bet if people in the business blind folded themselves and auditioned people, real talent would be signed to record deals. On the real.

  39. JD let me me start off by saying i am a fan, your influence on the music industry is undeniable, but i feel that if you want more classic music you should lead by example. I know your track record speaks for itself, but it seems like in the new souljaboy generation of music, the true artistry in the industry has faded. we need more substance in music and less ringtones songs and songs made for the club. i believe that while style is important it shouldn’t trump artistry and talent. style is unimportant if it is unoriginal.

I loved how she perform this song in front of the piano with the crowd so close 2 her!   41. Does Aretha still play the piano? What is she really doing these days other than doing random appearances like at the Independence Day concert out here in D.C.? I would love to see her perform today like she did back in the day in this video. Very few of the newest artist can even play an instrument much less sing. Music has many greats that are still hidden, but do we really want to give them a chance?
