about 9 hours ago from mobile web

As the self proclaimed mayor I felt I had to write this blog
Because it hurt my heart to read the messages that were being posted on twitter about the cities artist and birthday bash. The main reason Atlanta got the way it is is because things here were so much better than other cities i.e. partying, the artist coming from here, the price of living etc…… not only were there artist coming from here good they were the best. Lets use OutKast for example, the hottest rap duo since run dmc from the live shows to the records it was all quality. The message no TI no LUDACRIS is a prime example and then somebody said JD u the mayor you gotta get it back right. One of the biggest misconceptions about me is that the older leaders listen to what I say, (they don’t)I won’t say all but the ones that really need to don’t.

I’m not gonna go on and on about this but this is something I always feared for my city and I just ask that the music community pls pay attention.

  1. @ JD
HAPPY FATHERS DAY, HOPE U HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY!!!!!!!!

  2. fuck these ninjas talking bad about my city.. tell this calloway clown and fabolous to go the fuck back where they came from…really if you take the top 4 mc’s from each city and pit them against each other, who is gonna fuck with tip, luda, big and dre? Yeah we got some wack shit down here that the kids like but gimme a break “these weak cats out here in Atlanta” that was a BS line. Happy Fathers Day and pray for the Iranian youth that are forcing a revolution.

  3. The city has lost a few steps, homie. The music being released is not up to the standards set by yourself, organized noize, Dallas, Outkast, etc..Not only that, most of these damn radio stations and DJs (us excluded) are wack as fuck as well.

Too much thugging and nonsense. Man, fuck the ‘trap’. that’s real. I am so tired of hearing about your ‘car, champagne, clothes, VIP, rims, candy paint, whatyou serve, autotune, ice (please),’ and all that other BS.

Atlanta music used to come from left field. The creativity was off the charts and centrally ‘musical’. That is no longer the case. We are succumbing to the 808 only craze. There is nothing wrong with the ‘boom bap’, but we used to bring so much more.

Doubt me, go back and listen to ‘Soul Food’ by Goodie Mob.

Point is….you can’t have a successful birthday bash with no ‘real’ hits.

Let’s put out the call…all hands on deck.

It’s our responsibilty to bring that Dirty South swagger back

  4. yeah i heard it was extra regular. that kinda sucks.

Oh and Happy Father’s Day to you and Johnta.

  5. Happy Father’s day Jd

  6. I’m not a hardcore “hip hop head” like some of the lifers, but i do love and appreciate it. I feel that too many people are judging hip hop solely upon what mainstream media promotes & calls hip hop. We all know the majority of the songs out today don’t have much substance & you’re only jammin to the beat.

But sayin “honestly ‘rap’ in Atlanta is far from hip hop” – that’s straight disrespect to the GREAT artists in Atl such as Outkast, TI & Luda. So I say please look at what’s beyond the real wack “rappers” that’s on the radio & tv 24/7

  7. I WANNA SAY THANKS AGAIN TO ALL THE PEEPS THAT HAVE COME TO MY PAGE TO CHECK ME OUT. THANKS AND I DO APPRECIATE IT… ANY OTHERS THAT HAVENT CAME BY YET BE SURE TO DO SO.I GOT SOMN FOR YA!!! http://WWW.MYSPACE.COM/RAPPERSHO

  8. I dont think KidCalloway was talking about the past hip-hop but today

The main reason why I think hip-hop is getting this bad name now and days. Is because were giving it the bad name. The general public and the music industry has changed for the worst. We are to quick to say “Thats trash” other then to help and give advise or give reason to what makes it so trash.

  9. I feel you Kaboom, but Luda & TI are artists of today – that’s why I responded the way I did. But you are right about guiding some of these other entertainers but who can be that person(s) that’s worthy enough for people to actually take their advice to make them want to change it up a little?

  10. Interesting…. Atlanta’s musical background is interesting to me…. I’m rep H-town so I’ve always have a bittersweet, love/hate relationship with ATL… Although, I love me some Luda and Outkast and I jam certain songs from other various artists…. Ehhh… I just feel like ATL is but one aspect of Southern Hip Hop (i.e. Miami, N.O., Tennessee, H-town and now D-town/Dallas)…. I do, however, see some of the changes that the twits are referring to about ATL. Honestly, I feel like everybody judges Hip Hop on a New York playing field and have yet to realize that times have changed. Don’t fret JD, it’s not yo job to restore Hip Hop…. just maintain it. 🙂

    Love ya,
    Nisha
    XOxo

P.S. Happy Father’s Day to you, Johnta, Nelly and Usher….. and Ty, Brian, Trey and Bow (just in case.) lol!

  11. What’s up JD! i jus wanna say ATL is like the capitol of the music industry and these artists need to represent the city especially at big events when people from all over come holla at us. I think Ocean’s 7 should have definitely been there doing yall thang. Trey was there but where was the rest of yall? That would have been hot. We know T.I situation. What about luda (why is he in France?) Jeezy, Outcast,Usher…We the best – we need to act like it.. Much love

  12. ATL GOT TOO MUCH ENERGY TO DIE JD…..LOOK AT ALL THE RECENT TALENT…..TI DOIN A YEAR AND A DAY, MAD PEOPLE LIVE HERE. WE AINT FALLIN OFF. WE EVEN GOT FRESH(RE) BEEF GUCCI VS JEEZY…YEAAAAAAHHH(JEEZY VOICE)

  13. Jd, Happy Fathers Day !!!

  14. The Birthday Bash showed we have a lot of rappers in ATL, but very few stars. Many have limited appeal outside the south. ATL is still a great city for music with Very talented people. The scary thing is we are starting to be known for gimmick, ringtone music & not the quality that was being put out by JD, Dallas, Organized noise not to long ago. I hope that perception changes soon,if not the music scene could be in jeopardy.
To be honest I can’t even listen to ATL radio all day, I only listen @ work or in the car, when I’m home it’s strictly mp3. The beats are nice, but the lyrical content is lacking. I listen to some of the stuff & have to SMH & turn it off. ATL is more that trap music, swag music, ringtone music.

  15. I JUST WANT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO MY FAMILY “RASHEEDA” … IN MY CD PLAYER RIGHT NOW IS KRISS KROSS YOUNG, RICH, AND DANGEROUS…. IM STILL STUCK IN THE 90’S BCUZ MUSIC NOW-A-DAYS DON’T MOVE ME. MY ATL FAVS IS WHATEVER JD DOES, OUTKAST, TIP, YOUNGBLOODS, LUDACRIS (IF HE STOPPED ACTIN SILLY), KILLER MIKE, BONE CRUSHER, JEEZY, GOODIE MOB, AND I GOTS TO BIG UPS MY FAM RASHEEDA “THE GA PEACH”. ERR BODY ELSE I REALLY DON’T FEEL …. I FORGOT LIL SCRAPPY…

I LIVED ON THE WEST COAST SINCE 90 BUT WAS BORN IN ILLINOIS. I LIKE A WIDE VARIETY OF MUSIC BUT SOME OF THE STUFF I HEAR FROM THE ATL WE NEVER HEARD ON THE WEST…. LIKE GUCCI MANE AND OJ THA JUICE MAN… THEY WACK TO ME.

I THINK ERR BODY NEEDS TO STUDY OUTKAST… THEY R ONE OF THE GREATEST…

  16. Happy Father’s Day JD !!!!!

  17. “My debut should be on paid per veiw. Seen by 60 Million plus Two.
    Biggie and Pac, bless you.
You lead the way, now I’m coming thru
with diverse rhymes, from dance tunes to story lines
from days of crime to socializing with college minds
and I’ve yet to reach my prime ”

MDOT——-Give me the Fortune and Keep the Fame

  18. Love hip hop and the ATL. but there are some artist there that need to stop. but there are a lot that are good. but they got come up with something thats they and not stuff that’s been done before. cause everything in rap is not just about making up in dances or parties. It’s also about thing happen around you and about your own life. that’s what hip hop is about.

  19. MDOT, my spot
is where fire burns, lessons learned
respect isn’t given, but rightfully earned
    your concern, is my concern
    it’s time we return
Give the people what the people yern
    ATL aka hiphop perm

    MDOT——ATL, lets bring the Heat

  20. Usually most artists contribute to the industry by way of Atlanta and are not really from the A. Everyone overlooks other areas in the south who are lesser known for artists. Shout out to SC!!!

  21. I have a question for JD….what do you look for when it comes to finding new talent….I know you been in the game for a long time and you have the experience to pick out if someone has the talent or should just try something else….when you have time check out the songs on http://www.myspace.com/donvon35756…and give me some advice….anyone else who wants to do the same…be my guess

  22. No J.D, No Luda, No Goodie Mob, No Killer Mike, No Outkast?…..who’s birthday was it? Sound like a SWEET 16 instead of a big 21… At least it was a peaceful even wit the tension that’s out there.

  23. The problem with hip hop comeing out of atl is it just not the best it can be. Like gucci mane dude is wack and he has the biggest buzz in the city right now. I respect atl for outcast Luda jd jeeZy. But please want more from your music then just hot beats.

  24. We need yo help!!
Hi! MrDupri How can I send u beats. because We’re a producing duo and we think we’re the only thing so so def is missing. We produced pop, elektro, r&b, hiphop, never before heard melodies from Mars.
We’re writers, producers and more, we’re full of ideas, ambitious…
Please give us a chance to show u what we do please jd.
    We need yo help!!
    We got whatchu need
I’m sure u gon love our music, our concept…
    We’re watchu need
Just give us an email adress so we send u our sound!!

    thanx very much

  25. not enough originality.. atlanta has the talent its just too much bs over shinning it..

  26. I know im late but i just saw video of the birthday bash and i totally disagree with Fabolous. That was a bad ass show, yeah T.I. and Luda wasnt there…..SO….Lil Wayne and Jeezy was. How you gonna hate on the birthday bash? You dont see Jeezy or the Dream twitting about how wack hot 97 summer jam was. Are you mad cuz there was noone from the east coast on the stage?

  27. I am agree w/ c dawson I believe it is talent. Not to drop a shamless plug but visit http://www.entertainmentundergroundmag.com. But Atlanta has talent it’s just not the talent others want them to have. I always thought music was fun everybody can’t be gangsta and everybody can’t dance. People just don’t want to invest in there craft so the quality is rough or they are not going about the right way to get heard.

  28. @ nishanish87 I feel ya but I rep ATL!

  29. True that, you are and will always be THE MAYOR. If those who need to hear it chose not to listen, just know that U still got it. Always FLAWLESS

  30. It’s a Tipping Point happening now. The good music is in idle mode right now. But mainstream ain’t paying much attention. ATL has kept the music going after it left the N.O. (post Master P and CMR)…but it’s going global soon. Really. With technology getting sicker and super far out, the industry may be finding a home in Toronto Ontario (Canada)…Drake has the potential to shift the pendulum to his home country. There are other Canadian based talents that have yet to be big scaled but they are bubbling. No one community can kidnap hip-hop and expect it to remain in it’s custody. Hip Hop is a bad bitch…she can not be obedient to one sect of users. The shit permeates throughout the world. ATL we are grateful that yall kept it going. Now, let that bitch breathe!

  31. I WANNA SAY THANKS AGAIN TO ALL THE LIFERS THAT HAVE COME TO MY PAGE TO CHECK ME OUT. THANKS AND I DO APPRECIATE IT… ANY OTHERS THAT HAVENT CAME BY YET BE SURE TO DO SO.I GOT SOMN FOR YA!!!

  32. This year we’re gonna hear
    what the radio fear
    A view from the rear
    Hiphop in First gear
    Clear the runway
    I touchdown on Sunday
    In the studio on Monday
    Amazing like Kanye
    By the way,
I’m MDOT, ATL is my Spot
    I love the heat
So I’m about to make it hot
    no beat,
Just a taste of what I got

MDot——ATL, I’m there when you need me.

  33. Speaking from 2 places I call home “New Orleans” and “Houston”. JD hear me clear when I say. ATL is still doing its thing. I come from 2 cities that have come up since ATL made a major impact on the scene. Yeah, most of the ATL artist have begun to try to pass on the torch, but there are not many acts that can follow, Outkast, Luda, TI, JD, Brat, Goodie Mob. So new artist have come up, WAYNE, PAUL WALL, Mike Jones. Still this day, and for the last 10 year, studio people say “To make it, you gotta go Atlanta”.

So let me close by saying. Other cities still look up to ATL. We believe in you guys as we believe in ourlselves. You guys were the only ones who gave New York a challenge in the South.

  34. Speaking from 2 places I call home “New Orleans” and “Houston”. JD hear me clear when I say. ATL is still doing its thing. 35. this seems to boil down to STANDARDS and CALIBER! I love ATL, but it is different now. people dont seem to want to hear much depth or shit that makes much sense. But to each, there OWN. in todays age, you have to give people what they want in order to give them what they need. prime example: Drake, “Every Girl” by Young Money was dropped and added way before “Best I Ever Had.” Every Girl does a lot for Drake because he has lil Wayne leading him and the song really isnt about much, but fucking. Then he hit em with a 360 with “Best I ever had” because it means more than fucking a hoe, its showing emotion towards a special girl. Thus, the hood loves “Every Girl” while the hipsters love “Best I ever had.” NOW EVERYONE IS TRYNA GET ON THE DRAKE WAGON. I like music! its all about thought and introduction. SO GIVE EM WHAT THEY WANT SO U CAN GIVE EM WHAT THEY NEED!!

oh yeah, i think someone made a comment about this earlier. what happened to the artist nurturing portion of the industry (im not saying that correctly, but u get what im hinting at)… A Lil Bow Wow couldnt of become a Bow Wow without JD. Same as lil Wayne and Baby. the list goes on. people arent properly investing in artists like they used to and they wonder why they only get a ONE-HIT WONDER! Jd, you the mayor and you gotta let know how to run the city.

I still love ATL though, i love my black folks!!!!

  36. JD…,
I just aired out XXL magazine for that bullshit cover that down… It went something like this!!!!

Man this cover was absolute bullshit…I live my the mantra if you’re gonna do it…Do IT!!! If you are gonna dedicate a whole cover issue to a city that has a deft and incomparable music scene as Atlanta, you have to really make an effort in trying to tap into the local scene and not just ride with what the radio gives you…The July 2009 cover story should have been complete with a time line that bridged the gap from the past to the present, and that brings readers up to speed with Atlanta’s evolution

For instance you guys should have started with the bass music era with legends such as Raheem the Dream, Kilo Ali, Playa pancho, and Sammy Sam…

Then transition to the JD Era ( no one person can discount what JD has done for the music scene in Atlanta and the urban music industry as it stands today) with artist such as Kriss Kross, Da BRAT, I NO J, and So So Def Bass allstars, and Dallas Austin also gave us ABC.

Then lets transition to the Laface Records era…Outkast, Goodie Mob, TLC then you had offsetting them acts like Ghetto Mafia even Baby D and other Oomp Camp artists

Then the Crunk era with Pastor Troy, Lil John, Killer Mike, Lil Scrappy, Trill Ville, and Bonecrusher

then transition to T.I, Ludacris, and Young Jeezy…

i dont discount the movement that S. Beezy has or discount what Gucci, LO, and OJ have going on however…your mag grossly over looked prime time talent when you didnt include ( Young Dro, Young LA, B.o.B, Playaz Circle, J-Money, Young Ralph…The next time your mag does a story about my city it my be a good idea to interview radio legends like Ryan Cameron, or even Gregg Street to a certain degree…

  37. i know sum of yall luv yo hometown but arund the country ,atl is known for ringtone rap and dance music.no substance or lyricsm outside of ti and luda. I wouldnt recognize most of the artist thats playin on the radio and on tv if i saw them.

  38. all this super non lyricism tight pant so called futuristic only can play in a club type music is hurting my city. JD I know you hate alot of this shit because you were bred from a more musical era. That being said you and others like outkast,t.i.,luda,jeezy and a couple others need to stop acting like wack ass artists like rich kidz, shop boyz and young L.a. and a whole lot of others are good for the game. You see when yall say that shit either its because your a coward or you are stupid. We all know that shit sucks and that the rap environment is getting overwhelmed by undertalented acts.Any buisness, ideal or movement that strays too far from its foundation is doomed for certain failure, and i must say we have strayed too far from our true hiphop base.
    SPEAK ON THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. Real quick… Im from the A (but live in mass now) and im wondering if you know where most of your favorite acts are from… Hip hop is a mix between rap and R&B…correct me if im wrong… since thats why singers and rappers are both conciderd “Hip-Hop” So we gotta add some singing into this as well. but look at the radio right now… id say 75% of radio play has an artist from ATL!! The Dream, T Pain, Akon, Keri Hilson, TI, Luda, Yung Joc, Young Jeezy, Usher, DJ Drama, (as much as i hate to admitt it…) Soulja Boy, ect… and then we have the “up-and-comers” – Yung LA, OJ, and id add Gorilla Zoe, Young Dro, Gucci, ect.. cause they havent “hit” yet.

Granted… This is far from the years of TLC, Monica, Cee-lo, Pastor Troy, and that group of artists. But Outkasts aint going no where! JD aint going no where, Usher aint going no where…. Get my point??

Name a city where you have as many people from one place getting play like the A!!!

And yes… times have changed… so were not getting “southernplayalistic” anymore… But if your hatin…. Your city isnt doin “that” anymore either and your city is STILL two steps behind the A!! Thank you!!

Say what you want.. But the A is still the A!!

    Shocka!

  40. Whts good JD true lier on deck. I’ve heard and read a lot of people comments and pages and no one seems to realize tht wht u guys do is not only a job but it is a talent and gift. Not to mention that some of us would give up there arm or leg to be able to wake up and say they make good music for a living. My name is Retro Young and I’m addicted to the music industry and Jordan sneakers. I been thru a lot of shit, I used to be homeless and what kept me sane was my kicks and good music. You like a lot of other producers and members of the oceans 7 got me thru my nigga and some entertainers get a bad rep or don’t really try to give back or try new things and get acts. Ive watched every episode on my mobile to keep up with so so def and living the life for the longest now and it inspires me to keep dreaming and fighting to make it. I got a crazy sound that’s different and no one else out there is doing wht I’m doing, I pride myself on my sneaker box’s. I call my music tracks that because everybody knows the feeling when u put on and get to ur footwear and it just brings a smile to ur day no matter wht you where going thru. Ant thts the feeling I want people to have when they hear my sound. Oceans 7 is definately in a heavy weight catergory and I hope u guys are really understanding that some artist just wanna be heard like you and I wanna get down (nohomo) but so so def I think could be the home for a niga like me cuz y’all think outside the box and I crune and rap, but I just call it sneaker music. I have some music on WEMIX.COM but the quality isn’t great becuz I’m not caking it like y’all niggas but I spit and I can write songs and consistency to me is more important. I will end it like this I’m a lifer and to me that means imma chase the chance for my music to be played on the radio, for me to perform on tour or even to put my first album in stores 4 LIFE. So oceans keep paveing the way for young black artist like myself and maybe one day y’all might take a sec to listen to some Retro Young and u might hear wht I’m doing is real and ginuwine and wanna give the kid in love with his duece tres a chance. So in advance I wanna say thank you to living the life with JD and the Ocean 7…if u have time myspace.com/jumpmanclick…got some sneakers on there too…yo I wonder if gentry humphrey would present MJ with a proposition of signing a musical artist that raps about retro sneakers…hmmmm nobody ever molded there carrer around shoes before, just like MJ I’m thinking a strong 6 albums to match those 6 rings

  41. And I meant a true LIFER

  42. Why must atl be saved maybe it’s just time for another area to break some new talent and sound. It does happen people why be alarmed. Look at nj/nyc we were responsible for the biggest hits from the 90s. Please don’t argue me that fact it’s proven. But now who is coming from here anymore. Right now My ears has always told me that the next few years the sound is coming from LA and the west coast. It all goes in cycles. If you producers are smart you will start going the LA and making some contacts. They sound is dope and hard. They not doing that snare rolls and 808 kicks either. Trust me it’s coming from LA so get yall tickets and stop letting newbies waste they money and move to atl. ATL is lovely trust me but the music has shifted.

  43. Not to be contradictory though 2N1ce Productions makes great points. The A still dominates maybe not with the same quality but still dominiates. Just like the lakers they didnt blow people out but they still won when it counts the A aint gonna blow everyone out the water probably no more but they are still winning. Its always a new contender coming and that i believe is LA.

  44. where is da brat? is she still with so so def
