I’M READING THE NEW VANITY FAIR AND THE STORY THEY WROTE ABOUT BERNIE MADOFF AND HIS SONS ENTITLED DID THE SONS KNOW? FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON’T KNOW WHO BERNIE MADOFF IS GOD BLESS YOU. THIS MAN WAS BASICALLY PERPETRATING A $ 65 BILLION DOLLAR FRAUD AND THEY SAY THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT. THEY BOTH WORK FOR THERE DAD IN THE SAME OFFICE EVERYDAY I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE. ONE OF THE BROTHERS (ANDREW) CALLED WHAT THERE FATHER DID TO THEM “A FATHER -SON BETRAYAL OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS”. THEY CLAIM THEY HAVEN’T SPOKEN TO THERE FATHER SINCE HIS CONFESSION TO THEM ON DECEMBER 10, NOR TO THERE MOTHER. NOT BECAUSE THEY THINK SHE WAS INVOLVED (THEY DON’T)BUT BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT HER TENDENCY TO SIDE WITH HIM. THE CRAZY PART ABOUT THIS IS THE WAY HE TOLD THEM, FEELS LIKE THAT KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT. THEY WERE ALL IN THE KITCHEN AND HE SAID “I’M FINISHED “I HAVE “ABSOLUTELY NOTHING” LEFT, MY INVESTMENT FUND WAS “JUST A BIG OLE LIE”AND “A GIANT PONZI SCHEME”. IT GOES ON TO READ HOW THE BROTHERS GOT MAD AND WERE THE ONES WHO CALLED THE AUTHORITIES, CRAZY!!!!! PLS PICK UP VANITY FAIR TO READ TO FULL STORY. MY QUESTION TO YALL IS DO YOU BELIEVE THEM AND IF THERE INNOCENT WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN ?

  1. its hard to believe that family members wouldnt know what ea other was doing esp if it invloves money. esp in todays environment. even if they didnt work for their father they still would have known some of it. I dont believe them its too easy for them to just say that. esp since it feels planned. even though I dunno who this is. you would have to b either deaf or just turning a blind eye to it all coz of the lifestyle you were getting from it.

  3. They knew about it. They might not have been active participants in the scheme but they knew shit wasn’t legit long before he told them man. It was guy in 1999 that went to the SEC and told them that Madoff was running a scheme. SEC didn’t do anything about it.

    Personally, I think the family should be stripped of all their assets and have them sold to payback they people they ripped off.

  4. THEY HAD TO HAVE KNOWN. YOU CANT JUST GET INVOLVED WITH THAT MUCH MONEY AND BE ABLE TO KEEP IT A SECRET FROM PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY PEOPLE WHO ARE AROUND YOU 24/7….THEY WORKED WITH HIM AND ARE HIS SONS.

    WHEN PEOPLE STARTING GETTING EXTRA MONEY YOU START NOTICING THAT THEIR PATTERNS BEGIN TO CHANGE. I DONT GIVE A FUCK IF ITS YOUR RELATIVE OR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR. THEY WENT SHOPPING OR BOUGHT UNNECESSARY SHIT LIKE SKIIS KNOWIN DAMN WELL THEY CANT SKI AND NEVER MENTIONED ANYTHING ABOUT WANTING TO LEARN, OR BOUGHT EXTRA GROCERIES, OR ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY WANNA GO ON A ROAD TRIP AND NO ONE HAS TO DROP ON THE TANK CUZ NOW THEY GOT GAS IN THEIR CAR. OR YOU GO OUT WITH THAT PERSON AND YOU MAY BE SHORT A DOLLAR OR 2 AT DENNYS AND THEY LIKE “DONT TRIP I GOT YOU” AND PAY FOR YOUR WHOLE TAB!

    SO FOR HIS SONS TO NOT HAVE KNOWN ANYTHING DOESNT MAKE SENSE BCUZ YOU CAN TELL WHEN A PERSON IS MAKING MONEY OR HAS AT LEAST RECEIVED SOME MONETARY BONUS. HIS SONS WERE PROBABLY NAIVE TO THE SITUATION…MAYBE HERAD RUMORS AND WANTED TO TURN THEIR CHEEK BCUZ THEY DONT WANT NO TROUBLE. BUT IM SORRY, IF I HEARD MY MOMMA WAS GETTIN ALL THIS MONEY…IM GON BE ASKIN HER QUESTIONS. ITS UP TO HER WHETHER OR NOT SHE WILL TELL ME THE TRUTH, BUT IM NOT GUNNA ACT LIKE I DONT KNOW WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH MY BOSS/PARENT. THEY HAVE TO BE LYING!!!

If they can prove there dad was the one making the big business moves and all they were supposed to do was go of there dads direction, the court wont hold them liable. the sons may have believed that the funds and accounts they were managing were real. If they were the ones who turned him in…… then theres no way a court will prosecute them.

    If the family planned this…..WELL PLAYED!!!!

    the Sons will most likely be able to keep the funds that were legally made by the company too.

  9. i do not know about this one! maybe Madoff sons did not know that their dad was scaming everyone. Either they did know and turned an blinded eye or maybe that truly had no clue! I kind of think they should have had a suspicion though! But you never know! if they did not have anything to do with it they should get off!This is white collar crime at its most dirtiest! Of course we will all have to see how this panes out in court though! I feel sorry for all those people who lost everything that had with investing with him!

  11. Of cousre his family knew about the scheme, but only the captain goes down with the ship. I mean to say that his son’s worked there and didnt know how the money kept flowing is like saying that if they had never gotten caught, and Bernie died, the money and business wouldnt survive if the son’s were left to run things… think about it like that and tell me this one man was the only one that could have kept it going….

  13. oh please, 65 BILLION DOLLARS gets funelled through the ponzi scheme and the sons didn’t know?! There’s a huge circle of people at the top of Madoff’s company that were in on it, are they seriously telling us that Madoff put together every single report for his hundreds of clients? (which he falsified) by himself?! with no help from anyone?! They should be thrown in jail along with his wife and the other employees.

  14. I think it’s possible they didnt know. I beleive he began the skeem before his sons were even born. You now his mom and dad were crooked too, that’s were he learned it from. This would make a hell of a movie. I think this is a job for Oliver Stone.

  16. I think that maybe initially the sons may not have known…and they may not have known for a while. I think they found out though, and I think they probably gave their father a chance to make things right (which he obviously didn’t do) so they turned him in. I feel like Madoff is taking the fall because he knew what he was doing was wrong and ultimately he’s trying to keep his family as safe as he can. But I HIGHLY doubt that they knew nothing, I think they found out and gave him the ‘ultimatum’ not saying that not turning him in when they found out was right…but it’s family, and you’ll do some ‘not right’ things to protect your family.

  17. I think both sons were aware of what was going on with their father and the Ponzi scheme. I think Bernie Madoff & Sons were co conspirators, but he doesn’t want them to go down with him. They may not have done the actual embezzling, but their dirty hands are all over the records. There’s no way they didn’t know anything. Let’s say Madoff didn’t include them in the dealings, how could records be sustantiated and never called into question until last September? Someone had to be covering his tracks. The bogus account statements? financial reports? Come on now, someone knew something!

  20. I think they knew all along. Madoff knew shit was going to hit the fan so in order to protect his loved ones he had them turn him in. Give his boys an oscar award for playing dumb.

I need to read the article, but it is hard to believe is sons did not know, but I understand that he was running the scheme on a floor of the building with restricted access and only those directly involved had access to that part of the building. It is possible to steal billions if you got a whole top secret department behind you. Maybe he was trying to protect his sons. But I say he should not have had them working for him at all if he wanted to protect them

  22. Maybe, they’re telling the truth. There are alot of technicalities involved and just maybe they were so caught up in doing the job that they weren’t aware of what they were actually doing. And if they are innocent they should be vendicated. Always and forevermore Surgeryfree and FLAWLESS

  23. I not going to say people dont keep good secret from family***because I have actually see some strange stuff come to light with immediate family member…the whole family had to understand the business to actually work it so I think they all knew the sneaky details and should get charge

  24. The boys (they not men, real men don’t act like them). They know if they knew about this or were involved they would be introuble to gigantic proportions. I don’t believe for one split second that they knew NOTHING. I’m not living under a rock, but apparently they think they can sell the bullcrap line of not knowing in a company their father runs and they work at themselves. Come on, they just running away to try to get out the shit pile they are knee deep in with their daddy.

  25. I think they knew, but I don’t think they knew the extent of their father’s scheme. I think I read that one of the sons had invested and lost money as well. It’s possible that they didn’t know everything because you can’t let everyone know exactly what you are doing when you are doing illegal things, especially of that magnitude, because everyone can’t be trusted. Even family.
    If they are innocent nothing can be done. But it’s hard to see them living their lives off of money that was gained so maliciously, when others have lost everything and have to start from scratch in their 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

I believe that the sons knew, and that the family should have to auction off all of the things that were accumulated at the time,to pay these people back or to at least compensate them in the meantime, because I don’t see them getting all of the money that they invested with this man back. I don’t think it’s fair to the people who has suffered from this tragedy. Thanks JD,i’ll have to pick up my copy.

  28. I believe that they aware of what was going on. They are doing a good job of lying though. They had plenty of time to come up with a good story.But even if they did not know, it was there company too so they should be held accountable. Maybe not to the extent of the father, but they should definitely be punished. If not jail time, then take their multi million dollar homes, cars, etc. and pay back the investors who lost it all.

God dont like ugly…but unless the father threaten to take them down with him or the whole shame was about to blow up, i dont believe the the sons would have any other reason to take their father down besides couldnt the father just testify that his sons were in it too. It has to be the truth. Even though their were millions of dollar taken from the victims they need to calm down talkin about hagin or killin the dude as retribution, Hell in that case half the population needs to be hunged. man i get my money stolen from vending machines everday (im a college student with no job) but i get over it. There was one couple complaing that they could no longer donate to charity, What!! that means their still wealthy.

  30. Man everyone’s household is different…some families dont interact the same. THere is a possibility that they didnt know the full extent of what there father was doing, but then its kinda like thats bullsh*t.. they werent running a regular mom and pop’s grocery store they’re running a billion dollar company. you have to be educated and knowin what you’re doing to stay alive in the corporate world.

    there is no doubt that the wife knew, she had to have known.

    If those men werent his sons they would be sitting right next to him in that court room and he would be taking everyone with him down. he probably figured i got a good 10-15 years left in my life, let me take the fall for the family.

    Will anybody be surprised if a book comes out in the next ten years cowritten by the sons telling us how it all went down?

I personally find their explanation in the interview an insult to my intelligence and their stupidity is on an absolutely monumental scale, why are they thrying to feed us this story about them not knowing about the scheme of a lifetime. the ionterviewer should have back hand slapped them before they had finished that sentence. They should be stripped of ALL their assets but since everything in life is not absolute, oh well its called colateral damage they should still be stripped of their assets
