    that’s real talk right there. no matter how much a person has or how much they’ve achieved, depression is a reality that can touch anyone.

    suicide is not about being selfish but about wanting the pain to stop. some cats self medicate that pain by drinking alcohol on the daily just to get drunk enough to pass out, some hit that piff (weed, trees, lah, el or whatever the name used in your respective areas and country) 1st thing in the a.m. until dark just so they can feel numb and “function”. some like to sex the pain away so they hit any and everything that says “yes”, some people cut themselves, some pop pills (prescribed or not) and drink syrup (cough medicine) and then there are people who soothe the pain with food. some stay in the house and won’t allow themselves to be seen and some do all of the above. and then there is the ultimate move…

    there are lots of people who perform that acts i mentioned and it doesn’t always mean they are depressed or hurting inside. but chances are that a few of them know a little more than they are letting on and don’t know how to handle it or what to do. but depression and mental illness is a reality and you can’t always see it but you need to be aware. even the most successful, hardest working and most talented, the friendliest and most giving can be someone clinically depressed and hiding it.

    I UNDERSTAND THAT THATS WHAT “MEDICAL EXPERTS” OR WHOEVER SAYS. I HAD TO STUDY CLINICAL DEPRESSION FOR MY JOB AND ALL THAT. BUT, MY QUESTION TO YOU ALL IS, ARE YOU SAYING SUICIDE IS AN ACCEPTABLE WAY OUT OF LIFES OBSTACLES? IMAGINE IF MARTIN LUTHER KING OR MALCOLM X KILLED THEMSELVES WHEN THE KLAN AND THE FBI WAS SENDING DEATH THREATS. IVE BEEN DEPRESSED BEFORE, WE ALL HAVE. AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID IN ESCAPISM (SEX, DRUGS, ALCOHOL) BUT TO ACTUALLY KILL YOURSELF? IM SORRY, BUT I FIND THAT UNACCEPTABLE. AND THIS IS NO DISRESPECT TO SHAKIR AT ALL.

    WHEN I SAW THE LOOK IN MY MOMS EYES WHEN SHE TOLD ME HOW HURT SHE WOULD BE IF I WS TO DO SOMETHING “SILLY” TO MYSELF AT THAT TIME, I SNAPPED OUT OF IT INSTANTLY. (GRANTED I WASNT THAT DEEPLY DEPRESSED). I THOUGHT ABOUT ALL THOSE LESS FORTUNATE THAN MYSELF. THOSE WHO DEALT WITH FAR WORSE CONDITIONS AND STILL PROSPERED. AND, I PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE AND SLOWLY, VERY SLOWLY BEGAN TO REACCESS MYSELF BACK INTO MY REGUALR ROUTINE.

    I JUST FEEL TODAYS SOCIETY ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE EASY WAY OUTTA SHIT AND THEN WE WANNA SAY “ITS OK, HE’S BI-POLAR OR CLINICLY DEPRESSED” ITS JUST TOO MANY COP OUTS. I CALL IT THE PUSSIFICATION OF THE NATION. WE’D RATHER LABEL SOMEONE WITH A DISORDER AND ALLOW THEM TO DO SHIT THAT OUR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS WOULD NOT ALLOW.

    it may not be acceptable to our loved ones because they see the pain and loss of losing that person but the pain and loss that the depressed person feels at that moment and has been feeling for the longest time supercedes that. i’m certain they thought about how it would affect the people around them and, in their eyes, they may have felt that their loved ones would be better off without them, even thinking they are nothing but a burden to them anyway.
    it’s a blessing that in our modern society we can actually research and put a name to what those emotions are and discover that millions of people are dealing with it everyday but in different degrees. it may seem like a “cop out” but if you can’t totally walk in that person’s shoes and feel how deep that pain is within them then we can’t fathom how we may have handled that pain. it’s 1 thing when the people around you are saying you are wanted and loved and it’s just a situation that you’ll get through (if they even know you are going through it) but when the voice within you is saying something different and your eyes don’t see what everyone else is seeing, you wonder what’s true and what’s not. and then the fear of being judged is another reason a person that depressed won’t say anything: if you actually feel as if you are ugly and worthless and hear something within you telling you that but all everyone “claims” to see is beauty personified, would you really tell someone? would you tell someone that you hear something inside you saying you’re fat, lazy, ugly, worthless and life for everyone around you would be easier if you just didn’t wake up the next day? EVERYONE hears a voice within them but not everyone talks about the voice that makes you feel like shyt and completely alone in a room full of people.
    his way or the way anyone else deals with pain and anguish this intense may not be acceptable but it has to be understood so that others can be helped. it may not be acceptable to take your own life but why is it acceptable to witness a person consistently popping pills, sniffing that gyrl or messing with that boi, drinking syrup and alcohol and smoking tress on a regular and just say, “that’s what so and so does/that’s just how he/she is” when we know in the back of our minds we’re thinking, “he/she gonna fuck around and kill themselves on that shyt”?
    not everyone has the ability to see how much it would hurt their loved ones by taking their own life and end up not doing it. but they sometimes end up doing something else to lead to that path in a slow route. we all don’t handle pressure and sadness the same way.

    on the real, i’m glad we are having this discussion because i know someone out there is going through it or knows someone who is and perhaps they’ll look a little deeper into the actions they witness or the feelings they are having. we can all agree to disagree but we still need to agree to talk about it.

  43. I believe that Shake was suffering from depression, and having to hide it maked it all the more painfull! My heart still bleeds everytime I think about him and what he must have been going through on an emotional level in the weeks leading up to his departure. Having it all means nothing to a person when they are experiencing that kind of “invisible” suffering. I can only imagine the struggle that he was enduring every day to project the image that was expected of him. This was not about being selfish, he was far from it, this is about being in pain and feeling helpless. Yes we were robbed of a special and rare being, but further more he was robbed of the ability to control the turmoil inside of him, which in turn robbed him of his life! I ask myself every day why Shake, I cry, I get angry, I get frustrated at the thought that he will never walk into a room again, never realize his infinate potential and all that he had dreamed and hoped for in life and for his family. RIP Shake, you will always be in our hearts!
