WHATS UP LIFERS? I WAS TALKING TO @ATLSERGE ON TWITTER AND HE WAS ASKING PEOPLE WHO WAS GONNA BE THE NEXT RAPPER TO TAKE OVER. HE AND I GOT INTO A BACK AND FORTH CONVO ABOUT DRAKE SO I DECIDED TO ASK MY LIFERS. MY FIRST QUESTION WAS, IS DRAKE HOTTER THAN MURDER MA$E WHEN HE FIRST CAME OUT? (I’M TALKING LYRICAL AND SWAGG WISE NOT THE COMPANIES THERE WITH AND WHO’S BEHIND THEM) MY SECOND QUESTION, IS DRAKE THE FIRST RAPPER TO HAVE THIS MUCH PRESS WITH NO ALBUM? SERGE REPLY WAS 50 HAD THE SAME SHIT,   BUT I DON’T REMEMBER HIM GETTING THE VIBE OR COMPLEX COVER BEFORE HIS ALBUM, MA$E DEFINITELY DIDN’T.   1. Drake has zero swagg but his punches are stupidddddd crazy and you can relate to him on a much deeper level. I feel his songs harder than I’ve felt anyones. His swagg is terrible but his skill more than makes up for it. I think he’s killin’ Mase.

  4. Drake is a an artist people can get into.. He has more appeal i think than mase has. Drake has build a buzz similar to how 50 did. the only difference is that 50 already had a deal when he was building his hype. Drake built it off replacement girl and it took off with ransom. In which, he wasnt signed to no label. To really compare mase to Drake we gotta hear the album first till we really make a conclusion. In my opinion, drake is better at making rnb records than raps. Or I Prefer Listening to his music that way. he even admits it that he does rnb better in the complex.

  9. As a person who was TRULY around in that Ma$e era, the “slow” flow of Mase, and whether people can say they like it or not, he started something with the Shiny Suite movement..lol. He was totally on another level even lyrically. Honestly when you listen to FABOLOUS now, the same type of metaphors is what Mase used. Drake on the other hand, is more “poetic” to me. There is so much he is NOT saying, that he is saying TOO MUCH. If you understand what i’m saying. For me, even when I go back and listen to “Welcome Back” album…his lyrics are hottt.

Im from ga, and I love where I am from, but yall can’t tell me these southern cats don’t kick out some abc, bubble gum ryhmes. Mase had the whole little original flow, had his own lil dance, and I think he could do any type of song!

  14. Lol there is no comparing 50 and Drake. That’s comparing to complete opposites. 50 is gar-gar. He has none of Drake’s components. Drake has lyrical content, 50 just had good producers and hooks. 50’s upbringing was different than Drakes.

People feel that he is a confident version of themsleves…… He certainly is killing the game harder than 50 or Mase in their time. Like 50 though, I think he is ushering in a new era. Nobody ever came like 50, nobody rapped like 50, nobody promoted themsleves like 50. Drake is doing what 50 did just in a digital way. The difference is, the internet is bigger now. When 50 and Mase were first getting big I dont feel like they were getting as much play in the South as they were in the North initially. Drake was able to hit every corner of the world at the exact same time. Drake won’t be the biggest bc he’s gonna get played out in a couple years, but I think marketing wise he is setting the standard. I wanted Wale to take the thrown… but I think he’s gonna remain under the radar… I personally believe the kid to watch is Big Sean…. I have a gut feeling that if he pulls his branding together he will have much more longevity than Drake.

  18. I grew up on hip-hop. The golden era for me is still pre-94. As far as the new catz are concerned, I like Cudi better than Drake. Drake is definitely hotter than Murda Ma$e at the same point in their career. So much so, that I think Drake is running the risk of getting over-exposed. Lyrically, dude is way elementary. Him and Ma$e are about the same on that point.

    As far as press with no album, this is the first time I’ve seen a cat on so many other tracks w/o a disc of his own. You could put early Snoop in this category but he was really only featured on stuff produced by Dre. Drake basically came from nowhere and now he’s on every other song. I’m still trying to figure out how he got included with Kanye, Lil Wayne, and Em on the same track. Drake was way outta his league. Em killed it BTW.

If Drake can maintain & or surpass the buzz he has now & sell as many records as Mase’s first album “Harlem World” than we’ll see, but he’s got work to do. 50 had a great buzz due to the mixtapes he & G-Unit (just Banks & Yayo) put out, but soon after that all people cared about was how many times he got shot & the problem with Ja.

I think that as a lyricist, against Murder Mase in his prime, Heartbreak Drake would take it home. He is rookie of the year ’09. Who knows in ’10.   21. I must add that Drake is on some real handle business shit. He is obviously smart, and keeps like-minded people around him. He is the Obama of Hip-Hop. Whats gonna be real crazy is that while he may not be the greatest rapper right now, he is going to start introducing new major players to the US scene (Colin Monroe). All I know for sure is that the rap game is making another major change and he is certainly at the front right now.

  22. 50 had Em & Dre promoting him. Drake didn’t have Wayne & YM til his buzz was big. He had Trey Songz but thats not as significant as Em & Dre. They were on top of the game, they were veterans by the time 50 came around. 50’s style wasn’t anything no one’s ever heard, it was East Coast with a slurr.

  24. DRAKE GOT IT……..Ma$e was hot when he came out but he’s not touching drake’s buzz. He did it without a label and strictly off mixtapes. Drake made history and 50 cent was no where near Drake’s hype before he dropped his first album because he had a mix-tape with G-Unit called “No Mercy, No Fear” in 2002 (How many people even heard that mixtape??????) now ask somebody if they have heard “So Far Gone” or “Comeback Season” (case closed)

  27. Mase killed it lyrically and swagg wise! Drake is very talented, but he has no swag. To be honest he comes across rather boring and the appeal he does have comes from his affiliation with Weezy! Just pull up any videos with Drake in them and watch him. Don’t get me wrong I like Drake and he’s worthy of the attention he’s been getting, but he’s far from being the complete package. I feel that in the long run this will effect his longevity in the game. The game is missing something…I’m just not sold on it being Drake!

    I don’t remember anyone getting the attention that Drake gets with no album. All I remember is little articles about 50 being a Mixtape King but nothing major.

    Drake is dope but I agree with whoever said “I LIKE HIM BETTER WHEN HE SINGS” I like to hear him rap on features but when he’s rapping on his own songs he has the tendancy to get boring after awhile (except for on “SUCCESSFUL”). COMEBACK SEASON sounded like he was tryna duplicate sum ROC-A-FELLA ish but SO FAR GONE was ROCK (my word for hard/dope/ill/fire).

    Most Yefinitely 50 is and was a beast and if we are talking strictly buzz before the albums release not the circumstances in which the buzz was created (meaning before or after a deal, beef, cosigns etc) 50 wins hands down and what makes it even colder 50’s buzz was so huge it followed all the way into THE MASSACRE look at the numbers.

  39. Three words… SNOOP DOGGY DOGG!!! There was nobody in history that had more buzz before their own album release. Deep Cover had everybody wondering…Who Is That? Then when Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic” dropped, it was over. It official became Snoops world. Magazines, tours, radio interviews and steady radio play were all at his disposal before he even had an official release date for his own album. Which lead to the 1993 takeover after “Who Am I” dropped with a release date for DoggyStyle…It was over! It is amazing how everybody forgot about selling power before “DoggyStyle” was released. As far as Drake…He is not the next big thing…he was hot but he missed his timing. His music of lately has been waaaaaaayyy to moody (a sign the pressure is getting to his writing). Young Money/Cash Money missed this one.

    As far as the next big artist….

    Unfortunately artist aren’t being set up and developed to be BIG anymore…they are being invested in, trained and marketed to be Hot…not BIG. The more realistic question would be…Who is going to be the next hot artist of the next two Quarters?

  41. Although I agree that Drake is a very good rapper, he does not stand strong in comparison to the buzz Mason received back in the day. In my opinion, this has NOTHING to do with anything Drake is doing himself. Lack of buzz seldom has anything to do with how much talent the artist has. Talent just determines how long the buzz lasts. We are in a new-day for hip hop. The target audience for rappers have changed. Young people are leaning in a different direction and looking for other types of music in which they consider “hott” Other than that, other determining factors play a huge part..it could be 1) A Bad PR team 2) Lack of label promotions 3) Environmental factors, such as the economy and 4) Timing….Hope this helps shed some light on the average listening audience…

  45. Drake’s buzz is ridiculous and dude is ill. 50 did have considerable amount of press before Get Rich came out. Dude was on the cover of XXL with Dre and Eminem for god sakes! As far as Mase, when he came out, he definitely had an advantage. Bad Boy was on top of the game, people were looking to see what they would do next and who would carry the torch afetr Biggie died. So when Mase hit, the stars were aligned for him. It seems like as long as an artist is underground, unknown and broke, people root for them and champion them. But when the success comes and they start to acheive THEIR dreams, all the sudden questions and hatred start popping up. It happened with Mase, happened with 50, now it’s happening with Drake. And as you said JD, HE DON’T HAVE AN ALBUM OUT YET! Yes, his current buzz and attention he’s receiving is great, but it’s also crazy because you have people trying to write him off (cough, cough AnitaLTL…) before they’ve heard a full original work from the man. So Far Gone was incredible and that and the tracks he’s been on are a great starting point. But at the end of the day, we gotta wait til the album drops to make the judgement of if he’s buzz is on the level of 50 or Mase.

  46. It’s crazy about the hype over Drake…never have I seen this much over a rapper/singer/actor….but I like Drake…he’s connected to my hometown…Houston. When I read his interview in Complex & he said his ex & Houston inspired So Far Gone mixtape…I was like whoa that’s crazy…well the Houston part. Then he was talking about that he connects more with R&B…the way he writes or come up with songs from an R&B stand point is the same as Hov & Lil Wayne come up with raps. I think his swag is a down to earth kind of guy…a guy that doesn’t come off too cocky; as I can see in his interviews & relates to a lot of people. Which I think it appeals to us females…well from the lyrics in some of his songs. He’s not from the hood & doesn’t talk about all the gangsta stuff some rappers talk about when they’re flowing. It doesn’t matter if he’s biracial or Jewish…he can rap & sing w/out auto tune! LOL! He did it without a deal & without an actual album…just a mixtape! That’s why I think soooo many people are giving him the hype & love that he earned & should get respected for!

  49. It’s kinda funny someone said he can sing without auto-tune. His regular voice sounds like it has auto-tune built in. JK but not really. Forreal though I listens to Drake. I can’t really compare Ma$e and Drake because I didn’t listen to Ma$e other than radio.
    I can say Drake definitely has more press than anybody has ever had with no commercial album. I don’t think it’s one factor that has caused him to get where he is. You can’t just say he’s jewish, or lyrically skilled. There are many factors to consider.

  50. puh. Mase is a lot better than Drake, the flow and the heat he got is somethin Drake will never have.
    For me Drake is just not strong enough to bring an album out. He has no personality, everythin he is, has already been there and was sold before. The reason he is so famous is because of the internet, he puts a mixtape out and everyone is downloading it FOR FREE. I dont think that Drake is able to sell a lot of albums.
    Mase had a better image. AND IMAGE IS EVERYTHING. If Usher would not be so fly and cool he is, he would not sell 35million records worldwide.
    Just to have some good lyrics doesnt mean he will be financial successful. Drake might be ok, but he is not far good enough to sell around 100k….

    I think Drake is hotter than MA$E when he first came out just based on anticipcation of his 1st official project alone (I was around for MA$E’s debut and I don’t remember the same level of anticipation for 1st project). Lyrically, I wouldn’t necessarily say that Drake is better than MA$E. I just think they bring different things to the table. Drake is an R&B singer and rapper, and he does both well. I also think he he appeals to a wider audience. Drake is not hood and that is part of his swag. MA$E just rapped and was real slick with it. They both have the whole pretty boy thing going on but its two totally different approaches.

    MY SECOND QUESTION, IS DRAKE THE FIRST RAPPER TO HAVE THIS MUCH PRESS WITH NO ALBUM?
    From my recollection, this is the 1st time that any artist has received such main stream coverage with no official album. I don’t think it will be the last though. I think this will be a new way of doing things. You can project a lot of sales and gauge people’s response to an artist this way.

  55. Mase was crazy nice and he is better than Drake when it comes to lyrics. I think Drake is a ood artist and his mixtape should have been released as an album due to the quality of the music. But lets keep it real, Drake’s buzz is dying out. One he signed to young $/cash$. Everyone or anyone who signs to them doesn’t really make it because Lil Wayne is there # 1 priority. Mase had a buzz till the day he ritired and when he came back it was crazy. He still had it. Drake is a good artist because he can sing, rap, and write but he isn’t better than Ma$e… To be honest, we can’t really compare the two because of the time era of music. In the 90s you had have real talent and bust your ass to get recognize but now you make a popcorn record and you hot. Ha!!!
    Drake is a talented dude but I don’t know if we can compare him to Mase or 50.
    By the way 50 did have a huge buzz before the deal.

  57. Not sure bout Drake taking over still, his lyrics are tight but as for presence he does not have the fire in his performances. He is very well packaged and manufactured, he has a different look than most rappers which makes him marketable, but I am all for your stage performance and presence and I don’t see that with Drake. He is a good collaborator and that is what is bringing him right now!

  58. let me just say that i like both of them, but i would have to give it to mase hands down. don’t get me wrong drake is ding his thing. i can’t knock that. when mase was in the game he did it all from his style in clothes, to the way he rock the mic, and the way that he put words together. i really think that drake can take a lesson from mase. let me say again i don’t think that drake is a bad rapper, but he pick up a few things from mase. and if anybody think different i want them to go and get mase old songs and listen to them and than listen to drake. u will find out that mase went hard. i really do believe that if mase wanted to come back and drop some fire right now a lot of people probably be shock to know that he still got it. this is jus coming from somebody that love hip hop and know the real deal. so i’ll end this with each its own.

Drake aint the hottest rapper he great for being the hook guy and make it popping..but getting serious and coming with some real smart talk…not there yet for Mr. Drake……still trying to figure out how he getting so much air time ….dude not even blowing up like that on the street level. Dude will be forgotten by September of 2010 if he dont drop some knowledge on some fools. Honestly I cant think of any rapper who currently out getting the title of hottest rapper.

  63. I’m going with Mase just because he was in everybody list. The young murda Mase was a serious problem (go back to DJ Clue mixtapes and Hot 97 freestyles). Now Drake is same position cause there’s nobody right as new artist that is just killing it that we haven’t heard of yet. Hopefully his music lives up to the hype but it can’t have tons of features on it being your first album.

    Only new artist other than Cudi and Wale…….is Curren$y. He is ill and has backing of Dame Dash. Plus who was under Lil Wayne before Drake. He got next…I’m calling it now. Holla!!!!

I think he can come harder delivering his flos. he not at that level were he can constantly spit fire after fire, wayne probably tutoring him. yeah its cool if you getting air play without no album, but until you getting grammies and making mills, you basically aint shit to me

  66. I remember Mase being Hot (cuz Im from NY) butttt it wasnt by himfself, Puff was always in the background dancing and saying something. Yeah he had a successful album with the green suit and total leading the hook (or something like that), buttttt Drake can stand on his own and isnt over shadowed by his boss. Maybe it was his boss (puff) that was the problem. Drake is the biggest artist out without an album. Plus, I like his voice and lyrics better than Mase’s (betha) not (murder) ….damn shame lolol

  69. Being from Toronto myself I got to go with my boy Drake all the way! Drake exudes a quite confidence that has proven to be infectious. He has that TORONO SWAGGER, which is something that the hip hop community has never embraced at this level before. Yes in the past there were rappers like Maestro, but he was never as popular as Drake has proven and will CONTINUE to be.
