I HAD A PRETTY LONG CONVO ABOUT THIS ON MY TWITTER TODAY. IT WAS INTERESTING CAUSE A LOTTA PEOPLE SAID NO!! WHICH IS VERY VERY SCARY.THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT WHEN I ASKED DOES OBAMA KNOW HOW CRAZY THIS SUMMER IS GONNA BE IN THE HOOD? WITH MOST OF THE LIFERS SAYING NO THAT MEANS NIGGAS IS STILL ACTING LIKE IT’S ’08 AND ’07. WHEN IT HITS IT’S GONNA HIT HARD CAUSE NOBODY BROUGHT IT TO THERE ATTENTION. I SAW TODAY WHERE THE BOSTON PAPER WAS LOOKING LIKE THE NEXT COMPANY TO GO OUTTA BUSINESS. I THOUGHT TO MY SELF DAMN!! WHAT ELSE SHOULD I CUT BACK ON SO I’M NOT IN THAT BOAT. I GOT RID OF CAFE DUPRI FOR THAT MAIN REASON I WATCHED THE NUMBERS EVERY WEEK ONCE I OPENED IT. WHEN THE RECESSION FIRST STARTED I SAW THE NUMBERS DIPPING EVERY WEEK AND I STARTED SPENDING MORE THAN I WAS MAKING (IN TYRONE’S VOICE) THAT’S NOT IT LOL. I’VE BEEN ASKED FOR MONEY MORE THIS YEAR THEN THE WHOLE TIME I’VE HAD IT. WHICH REALLY LETS ME KNOW WHERE WE ARE AS A PEOPLE. MESSAGE TO THOSE THAT FEEL UNAFFECTED. YOU WILL BE SOON, SO FIND THINGS IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU HAVE BUT CAN DO WITH OUT. I FOLLOW PEOPLE WITH WAY MORE MONEY AND WAY MORE TO LOOSE THAN I HAVE. IF I SEE THEM MAKING CUT BACKS IT MAKES ME LOOK AT MY SELF. SOMEBODY ASKED FOR AN EXAMPLE OF A CUT BACK. I HATE TO SAY IT BUT NIGGAS GOING TO THE STRIP CLUBS 3 AND 4 NIGHTS A WEEK SPENDING 500 TO 2500 IS STUPID IF YOUR NOT ON THE FORBES LIST LOL!!!!  EVEN THEN IT’S STILL NOT WISE. A LOT OF YOU SAID NO THE RAPPER DON’T ACT LIKE IT. HAVE YOU SEEN THE VIDEOS THESE DAYS? HAVE YOU FELT THE PROMOTION? I HONESTLY CAN’T BELIEVE AND DIDN’T KNOW JADA’S ALBUM WAS COMING OUT TOMORROW AND I’M PRETTY MUCH UP ON EVERYTHING. I’M NOT ASKING IF PEOPLE ARE BROKE, I’M ASKING DO YOU SEE THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE DOING THINGS DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF WHAT’S GOING ON??

  2. i think that everybody has felt the effects of the economy whether they would like to think so or not. ppl are losing jobs, the cost of living is rising, companies are going belly up left and right…its real out here and its going to get worse before it gets any better

  3. I dont see too many people cutting back. I just see a lot of people complaining about ‘what they don’t have’. One good thing that could come out of this recession (i hope) is that people start appreciating what they have instead of wishing for what they didn’t have. I see it like this, no matter how bad I feel like my situation is, there is someone somewhere else that has 1/10 of what i do. There are so many people living outside their means til it’s not funny. It’s scary. People get a lil money and act like it’s a lot, like it’s going to last and when it doesnt they sing the ‘woe is me’ song and complain. I cut back, I turned my cell phone off. I got to get the canned and boxed foods and not fresh fruits and veggies because the shit cost to damn much. lol The only ‘extra’ that I do have is the internet. I don’t go out to the clubs, movies…nothing. But other than that I dont see people cutting back at all. I just see people complaining and/or ignoring our situation because a lot of people sit back and wait on Washington and everyone else to solve the ‘problem’. Not me. I stay on msnbc and cnn trying to keep up with what’s going on. I stay in the community looking for opportunities to keep food on my table.

  4. I believe people (artists)are doing things differently now , I agree with you promotion is down and money is short. If your not closely following an artist you wouldn’t know they had an album out or about to drop. I thought it was just because I’m stationed on the West coast but you just made that clear . . . At the same time Jd , i dont think most rappers are cutting back , because like you said earlier where are the people who did it first, so many of these artist out now are new and dont have anyone to show them or tell them until its too late to prevent sumthin they could have early on with financial situations. I believe the more humble like yourself are but these newer cats na, they gotta learn the hard way

The way I see it…people who have been in the game for a minute, and have expanded their BRAND understand that the longer the RECESSION continues that it will catch up with them soon enough, and they are making the needed adjustments to ensure the longevity of their wealth! Those who have the money (the real money) seems to have been taught how to handle their finances understanding the severity of what is happening right now. The next generation, I’m not so sure. So I think that they will continue to spend like they always have, WITH THIS GREAT OPTIMISM THAT IT WILL GET BETTER! And though it will, who knows when, so if they don’t take the necessary precautions it can get bad for them FAST!

  6. I’m glad you brought up spending more than what you had. I honestly feel that alot of people are in deeper, because of that. Alot of people ran with money they thought they were getting or worse, spending on credit and then couldn’t pay it back.

    The funny thing is that there are still people — both celebs and not — who are spending on unnecessary shit. I like shopping and going out and what not, but I don’t put that before saving and having a security blanket for myself. I learned you should have enough saved up to live atleast 6 months without a job… some people wouldn’t be able to survive 2 weeks.

    The music industry (as in the companies) does seem to have calmed down a bit though. You can see it in the videos, in the toned down album release parties that companies are throwing, and in the promo.
    Music videos used to be like an hour long and they were these big productions…now it’s a white backgrounds and performance shots. Lol.

    Oh btw…spending 2500 on a night at the strip club is dumb even if you’re #1 on the Forbes list.

MAKE A NICE BEAT, PUT A LOW OR NO PRICE TAG ON IT AND YOU IN. I CAN HONESTLY SAY I CAN SEE HOW THE INDUSTRY HAS MADE CUTBACKS WHEN IT COMES TO MARKETING AND PROMOTION. I SEE ALOT MORE ARTISTS TAKIN MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS AND GOIN ON PROMO TOURS… FOR EXAMPLE… ROSS, KISS, AND EVEN BOW. I PERSONALLY HAVE MADE A FEW MAJOR CUTBACKS MYSELF.   8. JD I really dig your blog, and I just caught up on a bunch of your youtube vids. I actually know Johnta from way back, so I had to peep. Plus the inside look is just fascinating.

    I agree on everything you said…maybe this is a start of a new beginning for you now that you mention this today…but I have to be honest. When people see your blogs, your night life pics, vids of you guys all dressed up, droppin names of expensive brands, seeing your cars etc etc they also want what you have. They are gonna either try to speak that richness into existence and ignore that they’re broke and that the economy is bad, or they are gonna do whatever’s popular so that they can LOOK rich and people will treat them as such. As we all know, speak it, act it, and you can become it. But people don’t seem to want to embrace not having a lot. Not right now. But honestly, when they see you, they want to imitate it. And there isn’t any artist right now that ain’t stuntin.

    I really respect you as a musician. This ain’t a diss and it surely doesn’t mean that you have to not be who you are. But it’s complicated. Rappers are doin what these labels ask or else they’ll be broke too. Adnyes, sales and rpomo have been horrible. I thought this recession was gonna wake people up more, but it looks like we have yet to see that happen.

    Don’t get me wrong, i love spending and all that but thing WILL get worse world wide. Musicians in general have less promo just because of strict Budget cuts. This is also a chance though. Labels have to work out new Business models that are effective, especially marketing wise. Shit, even I knew how to do it why can’t high paid execs figure it out? And artists gotta stop imitating and start beeing creative. Harsh times do mean labels will go for fast bucks and imitators, I know that but ppl will get tired of it. Like it was until alicia keys brought something fresh. So artists. Hustle, be creative. Be EFFECTIVE, working with less money.

    JD i feel you but also remember. If eerbody pulls out his money the recession will get worse and worse. So it’s about beeing smart with your investments. No shares. Yes to real estate. Prices will rise again. Europeans from here go and buy whole miami and Florida. Crazy!

    When i was younger I hated my life. I didn’t have the best shoes, clothes, toys, nothing….i felt like I didn’t have nothing and I was mad at my mother for not giving me anything. We had a house fire and lost all our possessions including the house and that’s when i realized that I although I was mad at my mother for not giving me anything, I realized that she had already gave me everything.

    I think people don’t understand how ‘rich’ we actually are. Go to villages in Africa and India and come home to your ‘nothing’ and tell me that it wouldn’t be ‘everything’ to them. Some people are just ungrateful and don’t appreciate the blessings that they have because they don’t look as good as the next person’s blessings. It took a house fire for me to learn that so I dont expect everyone to think like I do. To each it’s own.

I think everybody is feeling the effects of the recession and watching there money it doesn’t matter how much money you making we all have some of the same bills my mortgage, car note, light bill and so on may not be as much as yours J.D, but its all the same problems all around. People are learning to be more responsible with their money and its not by choice they have to to stay a float. I hate to use Diddy he said he not participating in the recession…you have no choice its hits everbody starting from the top to the bottom.

  15. I am a college student from Detroit. I go to school and Michigan and it has affected me already.

    I usually take between 5 and 6 classes a semester and this semester I had to cut that back to 4 classes, because of me not being able to afford it basically. With the banks being in trouble its harder for me to get a loan for school and when I do find a loan the interest rate is almost 3% higher than my loans last year.

    Also, for my senior project I was going to launch a magazine that would double as my portfolio. The magazine was said to launch in January 09, but I had to push that back to the Fall because the cost grew to large and that plus taking fewer classes pushes my graduation date further back. I’m damned if I do and damned if I dont.

    So, If I “The student/waitress/ future journalist” is hit hard I know the hood as well as those in the industry feel it.

    I just say that I’m practicing my grind today in hope that things turn around tomorrow….

  16. I’ve heard a few people doing the sensible thing, tryin’ to cut back & be more cost effective. But on the flip side, there’s still a lot of folks tryin’ the stunt and be flashy. And they’re the main ones that can’t afford it. It’s like the people that have it are bein smart about it, and the ones that are shall i say, “less wealthy”, keep spending like there’s no tomorrow. With the economy down bad now is not the time to try & keep up with the Jones’. And it’s sad, b/c I feel like it’s some people that just don’t wanna face the reality of the situation. Being frugal is not a bad thing. Yeah, there’s always light, but til we reach the end of the tunnel, play it smart.

    By the way, I’m watchin the fuckin’ UNC Tar Heels win another damn title. Needless to say, I’m a DUKE fan.

  18. I think rappers should have kept it simple like the rockers (especially the big rock bands from the 90’s) straight stock video and the band playing. But no, too much money throwin, 10 girls, the neighborhood crew, exotic cars, etc. That shit eats up money. Why spend a mil on a video when you spend about 50% less or more and still have a great quality outcome that will rise on the video chart? I’m glad record companies are cutting back. They should ’cause the majority of America has.

  19. I see youngsters spending like nothing is going on. A lot of those same folks also live at home, so they don’t really feel the impact the same ways as those who are out on their own. I think there are rappers who are still trying to floss. Like I said on twitter, changes in spending, budgets, and marketing will occur when the numbers stop adding up. It seems to me that executives are also picking and choosing who they want to put major money behind. This action doesn’t seem to be working for them. The consumers don’t always agree with what the company has budgeted for. I think both the artists and the labels need to revamp their approach to marketing, sales, and distribution.

You should have seen the line on TV for the new Kanye Shoes, knowing that bills need to be paid, but there priorities is in thewrong place. A I have met a few guys and girls, that does this, just to pretend like they got it made. Sad.
    It will be bad this summer, It will be more people buying lottery tickets, gambling on the corners, selling, robbery, etc., So I feel what you saying JD, it’s getting bad.

    And wait starting a new business is always at some point a bit of a risk at least for the first few months. The money that you have stored away for the first few months should be looked at almost a lost ,because you need to survive even if the shit is slow at first or doesn’t really work,I guess its the same for aspiring artist if its free promote yourself and go there beautiful and humble and smart but if you have too spend a little on self advertising umm save it and lock it away don’t spend it.

  39. I think everyone is aware of the recession, but regardless of age and/or occupation, people may or may not change their financial habits. It’s smart to cut back but some people don’t like to be restricted, and they go and spend money on unnecessary things anyway, regardless of how much money they make… even in a situation like this. It all depends on that individual.

  44. No doubt about it. If people don’t have the paper, they are gonna attempt different ways to get themselves out there regardless of the situation they’re in. I don’t believe it’s the primary reason but the failure of the economy can be a defiant factor. Just like you JD, many people are investing or putting more money than the value of the product or service it’s self. You cut back on your café production others might cut back on the amount of advertisement they make. Now day advertisement does not come cheap whatsoever. Whether it’s the suburbs or the urban neighborhood, people are beginning to realize the affects that the recession has on our everyday community. Just because you failed ten times does not mean it’s the end. It mean you found ten options that don’t work, so you continue to push for success. That’s what people are doing. If they don’t have the necessary resources to achieve a common goal, they find other alternatives to excel in everyday life.

  47. You know it’s very important for people to start cutting back, but in order for us to get out of this recession, people need to start spending again. You spend, companies will hire and things will pick up… I have cut back myself and even though it’s hard we still make without some things. My wife and I also know that we still like to go out and eat every once in awhile, not like we use to though. What has happened, is there has been a shift in power… we all have heard the saying out with the old, in with the new. I remember that my company was selling it’s asset holdings in one day of listing it for sale, even getting ridiculous prices, but now the prices have gotten so low that my company has started buying these properties in bunches. I am a firm believer that once the economy gets out of control and the bubbles pop it creates opportunities for a new wave of people to get in and make money. Watch this economy will create another No Limit or Cash Money or Bad Boy. Believe me!!

That was the first rule I learned in economics 101. The same money is out there, it’s just different people are getting it. In our case now there are FEWER people getting it. I think I have been talking about this for a while on here about artist and athletes having to show every dollar that they make. Most people are looking at them, I am looking at the people that PAY THEM. When artist get in the business and do shows and get lump sums of money do they know they should be putting away half of it? When you do a show and the promoter gives you a 1099, that means at the end of the year, the IRS is going to be looking for their money. JD you remember when they came and got your cars and yall said it was an accounting error?? My point is I don’t think most artist are educated. Right now is the time to get RICH…. REPEAT>>>NOW IS THE TIME TO GET RICH<<<< THERE ARE GOING TO BE MORE MILLIONAIRES MADE OVER THE NEXT 2 YEARS THEN ANY OTHER TIME IN HISTORY….. Just look at history…. More millionaires were made after the great depression then any other time. If you blessed enough to have a job and have a credit score of over 800 you better be buying as much land and houses as you can.

  51. People in the industry are cutting back, but it is being done discretely. The game has so many people in competition that pride isn’t allowing them show that they’re affected by the economy. Everyone has to have the biggest house, the newest car, or nicest video. Speaking of videos, they’re pretty plain nowadays. The green screen has definitely become an effective tool versus really traveling to these places spending money.

    Also, I agree that promotion has decreased with labels and artist. Budgets permitting artist to do major promoting and marketing are obsolete. Simply put, we shouldn’t be duped by our favorite artist and producers because at the end of the day they’re hurting too. They’re what I call “Rich-Broke.”

    As far as young America goes, we’re aware of the bad economy, but we’re not money conscious. “The Recession” is way deeper than Jeezy’s album. For example, we’ll go out and buy the new AIR Yeezy’s trying to imitate someone who is rich, but who is also affected by the economy.

    It’s time to stop frontin’ people because the economy is affecting us poor and middle class folk the most.

  53. As a nation we’re not prepared for what’s to come. We beat the first recession so I’m positive we can get this one. And although we have an Obama, we don’t have an FDR. Young people want to be like rappers, and I just realized that promotion isn’t the way it used to be, BUT the looks they give off in their videos and the lyrics they rap make people percieve another thought. It’s like a parent should be the most influential person in their child’s life, but honestly we all know for most people it’s the celebrities because they have the life that almost everyone dreams of. Simply put, people aren’t going to pay attention to the recession until it hits them and that’s the real truth. It aint it, but its life. You can’t force anybody to realize that life changes and make them face reality. The best thing you can do is warn the people, because there isn’t anything left you can do to prevent what is unevitable.

    I know I should cut back, and honestly I’ll do that, get a job, and then a summer job. Every little bit helps.

    America as a whole, young and old, has been living off of credit for the past 20 years or so and it’s hard to get yourself out of that state of thinking it’s ok to get something that you can’t afford now and pay for it later.Savings accounts have been replaced with credit cards so how can you save on something that you technically don’t have anyway?????
    I put my credit cards away because I know that the temptation will always be there to get a lil something extra if I have them on me rather than just spending what I actually have but a lot of people aren’t changing to live like that.

Causing investor confidence to fade, ppl back out of their shares real quick and take the money they got, causing mass companies to close down due to such a mass fall. Yeah its the banks fault for lending out mass loans to ppl who coulnt repay them, and other major world banks for being tied in with the guys who were throwing money around… among other things too.   70. Young America is not reacting to the recession in a responsible way. I havent even addressed myself. I am still spending like I usually do. But now, since my boss is talking about cuts to my division, I starting to pay a little more attention. The problem for most young African Americans, is the fact that we are competing with one another. We are always trying to outshine one another so that we can feel better about ourselves. Until we can stop worry about what the next man does or wears, we are going to continue down the path of not being financially stable when situations like this arises. I am starting not to spend as much money on clothes and apply that money to a savings so that if and when I lose my job I am ready to a least pay for necessities. I just remain faithful that God will keep providing for me as he always has.

    In regards to the rappers, I still dont think they get it….seriously. Yeah, they are spending less money on the videos but you still see them out spending like they have a big supply of money at home. The music industry has been laxed with their marketing strategies anyway but I can definitely see a change in the way they are marketing artists now in the recession. You see that myspace, facebook and Youtube are being used to hit consumers and leaking tracks are easy methods now.

I’m not a rich person but an everyday working person in the healthcare field and even my field which in the past has been one of the most stable is feeling the pinch!..REAL TALK PPL ARE ACTUALLY KEEPING THEIR LOVED ONES AT HOME OR NOT SEEKING MEDICAL ATTENTION..mainly because they either lost their jobs along with their healthcare benefits and cant afford it..alot of older ppl are going thru their stashaway money for their golden years for basic living expenses..Do u know that a hospital can actually take an older persons house and resell it if that persons health benefits run out and they cant afford their bill but still need longterm healthcare? Alot of seniors when they get older are putting their homes in the names of their children so that the house wont be used to pay off their healthcare bill..I used to be able to work allllllll the OT i wanted and now there isnt a lot there..OUR CENSUS and many hospitals census’s are low!! I feel that i need to start saving more ..i try to do what i can for my sis and help her with her kids cuz its so hard out here…BUT everyone needs to realize its real…America is fragile right now and nothing is guaranteed..

I mean, everytime I see them, their outfit is more than 1000 dollars, that’s not cutting back. I would rather save money to promote a CD then going out to these promotions wearing 348903840398 dollars worth of stuff.

  86. I dont think young america has any clue of what is really about to happen. I am talking about the demographic of 12yrs old -25yrs old. They have such a disconnect from real situations. They just live in this fantasy world of videos, movies and dumb Shidd. It was different with the demo that came up in the 70s and 80s when they were very active and aware in all facets of their life. When it comes to most shidd today, folks just brush it to the side or ignore it. People have heard it being bad but most don’t know what bad is. There is still a disconnect, like “that aint me dog or it ain’t gonna happen to me.” Parents of the younger generation don’t really explain politics and economics to their kids so their kids don’t show interest. Parents have always sheltered them from the bad thoughts because our parents had recently went thru everything before us so in their way of giving us a better life they didn’t instill certain elements that made them strong and succeed without fail no matter how bad times were. Now you have a few people that are exempt but the majority is trumping the minority now. The bad thing about it, is that artist are still talking about popping champagne, arab money, etc…bragging about all this money instead maybe being a little more suttle and letting people know they are in tuned with what is going on. It is I don’t care mentality, most artists ” are like whatever, I get mine and I really don’t care about the rest.” When you look at mainstream media, you don’t see anyone telling you how to approach or deal with this crisis at hand. You see them telling you to go out and be just like them buy rims, buy out the bar etc…in the 80s there were so many groups that voiced public outcry that people actually changed their way of thinking during those times. Public Enemy, KRS-1, Dead Preseidents, Queen Latifah and more…I think mainstream media needs to take note and focus some well deserved energy to the younger generation because they truly do not get it. Especially when you turn on the tv and they see athletes getting crazy money, music artists getting crazy money, the government creating crazy money…they don’t see a recession…….

    I totally agree with you on the cut backs. I own a media company that buys all of the tv/radio ads spots and sell them to the record labels and other entertainment companies and all of my platinum selling artists have had budget cuts. I will say, a few of my major clients have had to dip into their own pocket to assist with their own project, which is essentially an investment in their business. My advice is to be conservative and frugal with your money. I’ve made hourly/salary cuts for my staff. 1st quarter was very slow, 2nd quarter seems to be a lot better and I have faith!
    Fans need to realize that rappers make videos to “look” like they have it all, the girls, cars, money and more but in reality many, not all but many don’t have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out! I’m fortunate to be able to pay my daughters 47K per year tuition (although I just asked her to take a loan out for her senior year in August so that we can keep our cash/money market phat), my personal assts salary, my office space in historical building in the Bronx AND thank God I own 2 homes-mortgage FREE and no loans out on those properties. We also do not have any car payments since we own our Audi & Cadillac outright! So my advice to all is be wise, study successful people and conserve your money and stack up your pantry! God Bless!

  88. @ solo da kidd I have to say my oldest child gets it but my son is still asking for Xbox 360 games??? wtf??? My friends say the same thing the older kids that are getting ready for college that we know, they get it but the kids that don’t see their parents struggling they don’t get it. My friends and I are not rich but we know many rich people here in Colorado so we see the cute backs and that means less work for us because we do events. Fortunately for me I also do corporate events so I have been able to maintain. But my kids are like well if we are at the mall getting new shoes than let’s hit this store and that store and I’m like hey you are getting new shoes because you need them and that’s all you get. Explaining why we have to save to my younger children is like talking to a wall. But I think for people who are not rich we have always lived that way, having to save and sacrifice for our children and our families. But there have definitely been major cut backs in my house because you just never know. I work with a lot of charity organizations for kids and I always take my kids to the events so they can see what we do for kids that don’t have it like they do and my younger kids still don’t get it and I keep telling them by the grace of GOD that is not you but it easily could be. I mean all you can do is keep trying to educate them but if they don’t see mom and dad struggling they are not going to understand why they can’t spend mom and dad’s money. That is for the younger kids, now if you are 16-25 you should get it by now and if you don’t we as a society are doing something seriously wrong!

    K let me ansa ur Q– here’s the deal with humans in general, most of us pay attention and are aware of what is going on the world, from famines in this country, to AIDS pandemics in that country and the recessions affecting all over…etc. We know all the bad things that happen to people daily, but the lot of us usually don’t get too concerned about it until it hits close to home….that’s just reality–regular people and celebrities included..For e.g. Lance Armstrong didn’t care 1 iota about cancer until he got cancer.

    That’s just how it goes, and I think until the recession personally touches the household of young, middle age, old people whoeva (lose a job, house gets repossessed cuz u cant pay the mortgage, no $$ for college…etc) they gonna more than likely keep going bout their everyday lives. Granted the smart one’s will or have started cutting back and conserving more here and there. The fact of the matter is though, is that if the prices of everything in the economy is going up and you are still making the same, less, or zero $$ because you got let go, you will feel the sting of the recession in one form or another no matter how well you prepare for it.

    Just gotta hang in there the best you cant, rich, not so rich and poor…hopefully we make it through, if not ehhh…earth gotta come to an end some day, end all this suffering once and for all.
