Michael Jackson Dominates Euro Chart July 10, 2009 – Global | Retail | Rock and Pop Michael Jackson achieves unique pan-European sales domination this week with the top four titles on European Top 100 Albums, and five of the top six. “When Love Takes Over” (Positiva/EMI) by French DJ David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland climbs 3-1 on European Hot 100 Singles. Epic/Sony Music Entertainment’s Jackson catalog dominates the sales picture via a variety of compilations. “King of Pop” comes out on top, climbing 24-1 on the new composite survey, after re-entering the German chart at No. 1 and re-emerging at No. 4 in Italy. “The Essential Michael Jackson” climbs 69-2 overall, fuelled by a 20-1 climb in the United Kingdom on sales of 69,000. “The Collection” makes a composite 49-3 climb, moving 22-1 in France, 29-1 in Flanders, 40-1 in neighboring Wallony and 3-1 in Denmark. 1982’s classic “Thriller” is up 31-4 overall and his “Number Ones” anthology 10-6. FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY LADY LIFER Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Esotico Pouffle Satchel, The Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Esotico Pouffle Satchelis an everyday bag for an extraordinary woman. It doesn’t come cheap — this brown wild Indonesian python and rich Italian leather beauty will cost you almost $3,000. And sorry, Californians, as you probably know, python can’t be shipped to you. The bag has an easy elegance with its equestrian-style details atop its generous heap of python skin. We especially love the brassy-finished nickel hardware, making this bag appropriate with gold or silver jewelry. This satchel would go just as well with jeans as an LBD (brown and black is okay this year), and at 9″H x 17 1/2″W x 4 1/2″D, it’s large enough to take you from day to night with no trouble. Look at the side buckles! We love this bag. The Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Esotico Pouffle Satchel is available for pre-order from Neiman Marcus for $2,950.00.
WHEN WE GONNA GET WIT THIS NEW SHIT OVER HERE? Public transport, 007 style Cool Brits (and cool everybody, really) get the charms of an Aston Martin. Bond drives one. So does Michael Caine in The Italian Job. And so, soon, may (wait for it) London bus drivers. A collaboration between Foster + Partners and AM tied for first prize in London mayor Boris Johnson’s competition to redesign the city’s buses, and their winning design—powered by electric motor, outfitted with skylights, and lower to the ground for easier handicap accessibility—is now with manufacturers for finalization and prototyping. If all goes well, the buses may be on the streets as soon as 2011.
SWATCH BACK ON THEY HOT SHIT, THIS WHITE AND RED KEITH HARING IS A MUST Last week Swatch debuted the latest in its CreART series of artist collaborations. (Haring contributed designs in the eighties, like this ’86 model.) Cartoon-influenced styles by Dutch designer Ted Scapa, French street artist Grems, New Yorker Matthew Langille, and Billy the Artist recall the bounce and verve of early Haring work. (Watches by Grems, Langille, and Scapa, pictured below; Dazed has an interview with Langille, too.) They’re not as boardroom-friendly as some other timepieces we could mention, but they should be just fine at the next Deitch opening. Odds are, if you’re a die-hard Haring acolyte, you’re not all that boardroom-friendly, either. CreART watches, $55 to $95, available at swatch.com
THE COMPETITION IS ON !!!!!!! They’ve got some more growing to do to catch up with the iTunes App Store, but still: RIM has announced that after less than four months in existence, the BlackBerry App World now boasts 2,000 options—twice as many as when it launched. For the most part, that means BlackBerry users now waste time exactly like iPhone addicts, with apps for Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, Google Maps, and the rest of the frequent-fliers. BlackBerry exclusives, like Poynt (which “points” you in the direction of cool things you’ve searched for nearby), are well worth a spin, though they usually have iPhone equivalents. And if you’re still feeling iPhone-covetous, there’s the bPhone app, which makes your CrackBerry look just like the Jobs model. All in all, iPhoners still have 53,732 more apps to choose from…for better or worse. Crazy Penguin Catapult? Currently a best seller.
