Irrational behavior adopted by a majority, repetitive music, movies and advertisements armed with coded messages whether productive or unproductive would synchronize and captivate one’s mind because just as the components cited, the brain is also measured in frequencies known as Hertz (HZ) or cycles per second. As the cycles per second increase, the Hertz value (HZ) also augments.
Four major brainwaves or frequencies can be identified within the mind: The alpha brainwaves, Beta, Delta and Theta.
The Alpha state (8HZ to 12 HZ) often adopts a relaxing mode such as prayer and meditation away from the outside world (Berger, 1927).
Beta brainwaves (12 HZ and up) located in the frontal lobes keep the mind enrapt, engaged in paying attention to the outside world or being on high alert.
Theta brainwaves (4 to 8HZ) could indicate drowsiness and a hypnotic state. Theta is also the bedrock of learning and memorizing. Through such mechanism one has the ability to attain the subconscious of others with information conveyed repeatedly. These messages would later be relayed to individual’s consciousness and shape his (her) behavior. For instance advertising companies, corporations, music, movies, would utilize repetition to attain the Theta brainwaves, modify traditional culture and behavior.
The delta frequency (generally below 4 HZ) on the other hand, could be correlated with deep sleep and some of its frequencies would activate physical body healing. Delta is very influential in infants that are a year old or less and one may notice that children during such period of their lives would sleep abundantly. The delta frequency permits the brain to rest and rejuvenate.
The development of human electroencephalogram (EEG) is mainly accredited to the work of psychiatrist Hans Berger 1873-1941 while the electrical rhythms of the mammalian cerebrum were illustrated by British researcher Richard Caton in the 1870’s (Millet, 2001). Electrical activities are the primary causes for brainwaves and they all perform in unison. Consequently if a child or an adult is not behaving appropriately, it is often the negative effect of the outside world on the brainwaves which would overtime deregulate neurotransmitters, trigger abnormal behavior and irrational thinking…
