Rapper Da Brat Plans Post-Prison Success
What was your prison experience like?
There’s nothing beautiful or pretty about prison.Squatting and coughing every day was definitely not what I was used to. You know, I loved my plush bed and good food. Everything about prison was a learning experience for me. I made some friends while I was in there and they really looked out for me. I’m going to go back and check up on them. Being locked up like that has given me a new appreciation for everything.
What’s the first thing you’re looking forward to doing in Atlanta?
Definitely spending time with my family and heading back into the studio. Jermaine (Dupri) has set up my equipment and I’m getting back in the studio as soon as possible. I’m going to work on a mixtape and pick the best songs out of 20. I’m just happy to be a better person in every way.
What’s your favorite restaurant in the city?
Spondivits Seafood and Steak restaurant. There’s nothing like those crab legs and dirty butter! Lord, have mercy. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!
1219 Virginia Ave.; 404-767-1569
What are your other ATL hot spots?
Man, I’ve been locked up for two years, so a lot of the places I love in Atlanta have closed down. I’m on house arrest now, too. I’m just going to keep my job at the window plant. I secured that job through a program while I was in prison. It’s not about me needing the job, it’s the normalness of the job. I like getting up, going to work, and having a routine.
Which stylist does your eccentric braids?
Shontelle Sampeur has been braiding my hair forever. She’s not in a salon, though. We joke that she’s on wheels. Just a phone call away.
What singer would you like to pull into a studio for your next project?
I’ve always been a die-hard R. Kelly fan. He produced my first song back in the ’90s. I definitely want to work with him. I also love Fantasia and Lil Mo’s voice. I’m ready to do it all.
