Website Lets Fans Recreate Beats by Kanye West, J Dilla and 9th Wonder

On “I’m Innocent,” the first song from Murs’ 2008 major label debut, Murs For President, the Los Angeles rapper recalls the days when “Back when people said you couldn’t make beats on PCs.” The brain behind that song’s instrumental, of course, was his longtime collaborator 9th Wonder, whose work you can now recreate right from your internet browser. Sample Stitch, the new project from Matt Daniels, lets users pick apart and put back together beats by three of the most revered beatsmiths of the last decade and a half. 9th’s “Impressknowsoul!!!!,” J Dilla’s “Don’t Cry” and Kanye West’s “Otis” are all on the table, with nearly all of each respective beat’s elements tied to a key on a standard keyboard. No MIDI, MPC or Pro Tools required.

Daniels was previously in the news for compiling a chart that tracks the relative vocabulary sizes of various rappers. As for Sample Stitch, he qualified the endeavor by reminding users that this process makes no mention of the hours producers spend digging for samples and the imagination needed to pull elements for the subsequent flip. Daniels explained his interest in the project by saying that he has “long been fascinated by the producer’s choices” when constructing beats from samples, adding that he hopes Sample Stitch will help casual rap fans grasp the “process and gift” that goes into crafting a great production.
