WHAT YOUR LOOKING AT IS THE NUMBERS ON SUSAN BOYLES NEW RECORD WHICH THEY’RE SAYING IS NOW THE HIGHEST DEBUT SINCE SNOOP. THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT THIS IS I HAVEN’T  HEARD 1 SONG OR SEEN 1 LEAK.  50 CENT CAME OUT LAST WEEK AND SAID HIS ALBUM GOT LEAKED A WEEK EARLIER. I’VE SEEN PROBABLY 5 SONGS FROM CHRIS BROWN, TIMBERLAND THE CLIPSE,  ECT …….. WHO’S ALBUMS ALL COME OUT NEXT WEEK. IN THE PAST IF PEOPLE HEARD NEW MUSIC FROM ALBUMS THEY REALLY WANTED,  IT TRANSLATED IN SALES. I’M NOT SEEING THAT RIGHT NOW, NOR AM I SEEING OR HEARING ABOUT LEAKS FROM THE POP ARTIST. JOHN MAYOR SOLD 300K THE SAME WEEK AS 50 AND I HEARD NOTHING BUT THE SINGLE NO LEAKS. SO MY FIRST QUESTION IS WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS ONLY HAPPENING TO R&B AND RAP?
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ARTIST ARE THINKING WHEN THEY LEAK RECORDS? WHAT DO YALL THINK BECAUSE ITS  FOR  YOU?
TALK TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. I think leaking for most is a sign of desperation… because they know that they are going to need to extra exposure. Although it works for some, what i think is happening is the people are speaking loud and clear! We are tired of music that lacks content, we are tired of gimicks, and tricks, and all the parlor tricks used by some artists. We are tired of 50, Brown, ect and any other artist that will not build, revive, or teach! We are ready to support artists that are relevent… and whether we want to admit it or not Susan Boyle is relevent! Why? because she represents the hope of the common person. Saying, “if she can make it, maybe I can make it!” Not as an artist, but encouraged to be better human beings! The struggle is HARD, and what the hell is 50 gonna teach me about gettin out of the struggle, he to damn busy with Officer Ricky! (Wack)…

  2. They probably think if they leak it will hear it and make us want to buy it
Well it does the opposite 4 me if a record leaks and I dnt like it I’m not buyin
Simple as its safe 4 them not 2 leak the record coz its xcitin wen u go buy it & u have
No Idea wat it sounds like well 4 me anyways this whole yr I only bought 2 CDs and thats sad gone
R the dayz we use 2 buy loads of cds thru out the yr & 50 cent need stop makin xcuses

  3. R&B & Hiphop artists & fans alike seem to be media driven & that’s why you find that a lot artists careers don’t survive despite their talent…Country Rock Pop Folk artists are still selling out arenas & theatres across the globe without a top 40 hit or even an album out…80% of the hip hop & r&b artists can barely sell out theatres…With regards to the leaks, the people runnin these artists personally don’t have their finger on the pulse on how to present the albums…

  4. Time to stop leakin shit. If artists provide quality records, we go support regardless. I think we as consumers got tired of the bullshit. People throwing shitty albums together, where the skits are better than the whole album! lol! Besides, word of mouth is always better than a leak to me. I personally don’t buy albums off of one or two leaks….The formula needs to go back to the old school….

  5. i think TODAY, this is the formula: Release 2 really hot single and do it at the right time for peoplemake it a hit, then you’re ready to drop the album. About the leaks, thats really a problem and the worst thing about that is people is actually WAITING for leaked tracks when they know an album is about to release. I dont know how the hell the songs get leaked, but we have to stop that.

  6. I do think its only affecting R&B and Rap. I think it’s because these genres target a different audience. The audience that stays up on bootlegs. lol Majority of the Ppl who listen to other genres may not be exposed to it as much as we are. Buying bootleg cd’s is easy and cheap. Limewire was everybody’s dream for a minute. Until it started fuckin up ur computer. I think it’s about convenience and money.

I always wondered what artists were thinking when they leak records then complain about record sales. I think they do it because they wanna know what to expect before the album actually comes out so it kinda softens the blow a lil bit. Real fans are gonna buy it even after it leaks. I went and bought Trey Songz “Ready” album, Loso’s Way, and a couple others. There are certain artists who you feel a certain connection with. Artists who you personnally wanna see succeed and help anyway you can. I think if Trey Songz stopped leaking his music, his record sales would be through the roof. He hasn’t won all the awards or been acknowledged the way he should be but his fan base is rediculous. We go ham for him and he goes ham for us. I honestly believe that if he didn’t leak his music, ppl would actually get up and go buy his album.

  7. There’s a lot of things that go on in Hip Hop & R&B that don’t happen in other Genres. Beefing…..new artists trying to kick the veterens out the game instead of embracing.Too many collaborations on albums, R&B albums containing 12 Rap artist features. Most of this music right now sounds the same. Hell I cant distiginguish who’s a rapper & who’s singing sometimes. But my personal stance on buying albums has never changed. If I hear a record I like & I like the artist as a person then I’m gonna buy the album. Simple. Hell I didn’t even need to hear Dondrias your the one to tell u imma buy the album. Everybody seems to have a gimmick these days & nobody seems to genuinly love the art of creativity. 50 I got tired of the antics, beefing w/cats just bcuz, Chris Brown, I’m too old. The Clipse, I haven’t heard 1 one song yall know LA radio is Wack, Timbaland is on his Pop Rock shit. This year the only NEW albums I can honestly say I purchased were The Dreams Love vs Hate, The Blueprint 3, Maxwell,Keri Hilson, Chrisette Michelle, Rae, Ledisi & ummmmmm. Yea that’s it!& the Last will be MJB in a couple weeks. They Don’t make ALBUMS the way they used too…..*Calling ARTIST DEVELOPMENT CALLING ARTIST DEVELOPMENT…..

  8. Let me tell you why Susan Boyle sold so much. Her fans don’t illegally download music. They go to the store and buy it. Same with Mayer. R&B and Rap artists get leaked so the labels can find out if they should push the record more or leave it alone. They are tryin to gauge the excitement for the artist and the album. AND to find out if they should re-release it as a DELUXE album with new shit on it. Sales are based on fan base. The fan base that buys shit off itunes no matter what = tweens. The fan base who goes to the store to buy the actual cd = career people, older crowd, professionals.

  9. Oh & I bought Trey Songz…almost forgot

  10. HOW’S LEAKING THE RAP & R&B RECORDS OR HOW DO U THINK????? BECAUSE UR RIGHT I DON’T HEAR ANY POP RECORDS BEING LEAKED…

  11. WHO’S LEAKING THE RAP AND R&B RECORDS???

  12. All I know is that I use to love the build up to my fav artist new album. I have in my collection well over 1000 CD’s “hard copies” and having to go to the store was a great adventure. Now with all the leaks there is no anticipation! The one thing I do love Thad happening now is the Mixtape era. When Trey Songz came out with the Anticipation mixtape I knew right then I would buy anything he put out. Same thing with Dondria..that mixtape only made me more hungry for her single, and her album. Honestly it’s just like the songs I’m hearing from Usher, I’m glad they are just “leaks” but it’s not getting me excited! I just want to be like checking my calendar with the date marked for albums to come out and hitting up Manifest Disc & Tapes..lol

  13. I def feel like it isnt the artists fault when their album leaks. Actually, sometimes It might be, but for the most part from what Ive read/heard, the album leaks when it leaves the hands of the artist/record company, and goes to the factorys and stores for distribution. Like 50 said when he came out, his album leaked a month before it was supposed to come out, just after the record went to the stores and factorys.

Alot of times its inevitable. But here is my reason for why this is happening.

Rap and R&B music, has ALOT, maybe the MOST young fans/followers. These are the young fans who are on the internet everyday looking for something new from their favorite artist. I feel like this is the reason it doesnt translate to sales anymore. Susan Boyle’s audience, lets be honest, is older folks and people who probably aint really on the net like say a Chris Brown fan would be. When it leaks, especially a month early, the people who will download the leak, usually figure “whats 1 more album sale if I buy it” and just listen to the leak instead.

So, what im saying is, RAP and R&B fans, are the ones more likely to be on the net and be up on the leaks.. this is why the sales for them genres are down. Country singers, people like Susan Boyle, all have much older audiences, who are less likely to go online to get the album and put it on a iPod that they probably dont have.

  14. wat up jd i thin that is a good point! i brough john mayer cd with no other leaks beside the first single! i think that is unfair that r and b and rap artist seem to get their albums leaks! I believe there are some issue with the ppl workin in or around those depts! I remember a time when u had to wait to the album 2 come out b4 u heard any other songs on there! now it seems that it is standard for our albums 2 leak! i blame it on the internet n probably the record labels who r trying 2 build anticipation! susan boyle is a prime example of the you tube effect and just plain out if ppl want to buy the album they will! I beleive that the reason why our albums seem 2 leak is because the labels or the ppl working on them either want 2 bulid buzz on the album or become famous of leaking it! I also believe that if we put out quality music and have companys support it then this may not be an issue in the rap and r n b genre! IT seems that pop, rock and country artist albums do not recieve as must leaks as urban records does!

  15. You should ONLY leak an album that’s CRACK. Im sorry… decent… good… no GREAT.. EXCEPTIONAL. CAuse if you leak your shit and it’s just ALRIGHT?! I’m having someone send me ur shit via instant messenger. **serious face** (because I dont download from websites)

Susan boyle’s CD was called Teh Wait is Over right??? Part of me wondered if any fast clicking had pple confused with Rihanna???? Since she used that as her promo (dont act like it’s far fethed) Also. Susan Boyle had mad commercials. I actually thought the shit was a BOOK. I remember seeing the commerical MAD TIMES! So it must have plaid on HGTV and/or WE because those are the only channels that I watch all day, every day. And if she’s grown— which she looks— then voila… she def hit her audience.

I think artists are too conventional. Everyone has a christmas special… blah blah blah… everyone leaks on mySpace or MTV. Like alright. Look at Trey Songz… he put out a mixed tape. No what if the shit had sucked??? No one wouldve bought his album. But it was GREAT. So u felt like, yeah his CD leaked… but he worked hard… lemme help his #s. (And consumers do think like that.)

Rihanna’s CD was released Monday on Amazon for $4. And then Tuesday it was $1. And she still didnt do record numbers. THATS an EPIC FAIL! ONE DOLLAR… yeah that was creative… but the results are sad.

**shrugs** People’s albums just aren’t GREAT anymore. So leaking them is usually an accident. LOL

  16. Ohhhh wait… maybe thats just what her commerical said “the wait is over” or maybe I’m lost… yo no se! lmao. i swore i seen her dressed in black in a commerical

  17. Susan boyle is very talented vocally no question the reason you dont hear the latest susan boyle track leaking is because its not whats in demand. She has a great vocal ability but the only reason people want to listen to her is down to the senario which she came from. People want to buy a part of the underdog story but the media hype is what pushes it. Rap and rnb is drove by word of mouth somebody telling somebody else if the new cd is hot or not before it hits ,example you can hear the new Chris Brown Album before radio or whoever decide what track is hot ,you then can find your own favorite tracks whichs makes it apeal to the vast audience because the fans can feel like they have been given the inside scoop before the majority of the public hear it and they can enjoy their favorite track before the comercial radio overplays and ruins them.
I bet 90% of whos bought Susan Boyles cd dont normally listen to her style of music but buy it as they are drawn buy the media gimic. To me the whole ugly person great voice thing is played out and i think she keeps it up to sell records, how many times could you really listen to “wild horses” without depressing yourself .
“Pop” artists dont have to push there albums because the media already does but with rnb and rap the ellite are changing one minuet youll hear from an artist then theyll diapear and leaks are what get the audience listening to them again like BEP they had a massive pop hit with “where is the love” then they disapeared after a couple more tracks then this year they stormed the charts with 3 big tracks, but all of the tracks were leaked way before you hear them on the radio.
I think its the competition for sales as rnb and rap have to battle alot more for the comercial sucsess that recult in sales, where as pop artists are driven by the media, radio dictating whats the new track/ artist or tv shows pushing gimic artists into the spotlight.

  18. I feel a lot of our stuff gets out b/c the artist have the wrong people around their music. I know artist leak song to get the vibe of the people, some feedback. Speaking from personal back when i use to work at blockbuster (many moons ago) i would get offered upward of a $100 for a dvd a wk before it came out. Boatlegging is big business and it only take one bad apple to sell u out. I see that most of the ENG behind the table now a days are white and they wouldnt care if ur music got out one way are the other. Now let that be Elvis are some shit and they would say hell no.

  19. As an artist, I would pissed if someone were to leak my shit before I officially dropped it myself. That’s like free music right there. I definitely wouldn’t want to be busting my ass working extra hard to make money by putting songs out, only for yall niggas to hear it for free. I would drop a couple of mixtape songs to convince people to hear me, but not no damn wholllllllllllllllllllle album worth of music if no kind of money comes from it. Not to sound overly selfish & lazy cause I’m not; I just feel like if I were to put in that much work towards building a successful career, then I should get paid for it. Nah mean?

I am very Charismatic; & I approve this message

  20. The problem is the Rap/R&B genre are not in tune with their material anymore. Most pop/country artist are true to their work but that’s not the case with most R&B/Rap artist. It almost seems as if rap and rnb artist are being made and thrust upon us while the pop/country artist are being born.

Rap and rnb put fashion over the quality of their music. They don’t believe in the stuff that they are releasing so the leak it to see if we the consumers will be foolishly enough to buy it or if we will demand for quality music. I understand the “total package” concept but we have gotten away from true music.

For instance, look at Susan Boyle. She is not the glitzy, glamor girl but she can sing. She actually has talent and that is what she is standing on…TRUE TALENT. But when we take a look at the rap and rnb genre, its mediocre at best. Its like record companies think if they find a girl with a pretty face and coca cola bottle body or a guy with a cute smile and hard body they will turn them into a success. Never mind if they actually have any talent or not.

They are practically releasing garbage. The reason people arent buying the albums is because people are fed up with paying their hard earned money for album they may only have 1 or 2 good songs on it and the rest is trash. They spend so much time on their outer appearance and not enough time in the studio actually coming up with quality music. You don’t see the John Mayers, Susan Boyles, or Taylor Swift running around talking about Gucci this or Gucci that. They are too busy make MUSIC. It is called the MUSIC industry, its not the FASHION industry.

Prime example, Michael Jackson….greatest of all times. He BELIEVED in his music and he LIVED his music. We love him dearly for it. And the fact that he made such a huge fashion statement was just a plus. But his MUSIC came first.

So in closing this ridiculously rant…make quality music then there will be no need to leak to test the waters so to speak. Stand strong and firmly on your craft.

  21. when they leak a song are two if its good i’m going to by the album. as for susan congrats but will not be buying ur music nor have i ever heard ur music on the radio, so this makes no fing scene cause i feel like some record company are sabotaging great artist by leaking their music less sales sometimes less money they gotta pay out.

  22. The label brought the records and will sell them back!! Never heard of the lady!

  23. In my opinion the real problem is that R&B and Hip-Hop/Rap music is blending in with Popular Music. R&B and Hip-Hop no longer have there own identity and this can be a major reason why sales are not what they use to be. For example Keri Hilson is labeled as an R&B artist, but her album sounds nothing like Rhythm & Blues its more like popular music. Same goes for Hip-Hop artists like Kanye West doing this Auto-tune mess who wants to listen to that. As R&B and Hip-Hop music becomes even more mainstream and you have other artists in other genres such as Adele and Susan Boyle who are non-black, but sound better than the black artists then R&B and Hip-Hop(can’t think of any rap artists, but you know what I mean) will continue to lose its identity.

In other words I stick with artists who I grew up with and who I know. Furthermore, I don’t follow the mainstream and I don’t believe the hype. R&B and Hip/Hop Rap artists step your game up!

  24. @BiggRev
u literally took the words out of my mouth! I could easily write an essay on this topic.
It is true that we are tired of gimmicks. How does having a song called ‘Have a baby by me’ make me take you seriously as an artist? I mean honestly? Is that what 50 wants us to aspire to be…baby mamas who only collect child support cheques??? These days more and more people, esp. women are getting educated and aiming for higher things in life. Maybe a few years back, that song could have been worth something, but not anymore.

I am FED UP with BS music…particularly those that aren’t relatable. Susan Boyle was able to sell that many copies because the songs she chose for her album, which except one are all covers from different artists, are worth something and have a deeper meaning. Look at ‘I have a dream’- the soundtrack from Les Miserables. That song inspires. It tells of the struggles that everyone has to face in life, yet could very possibly be won.

Another reason as to why R&B and hip hop artists cannot sell that many records is because they limit their audience/ markets.
John Mayer for eg. is one artist that has black, white as well as other race fans. He got exposure from playing at M.J’s memorial and also Jay’s 9/11 concert. I have been a fan of his for a long while now, but I realised on twitter that those two gigs made other races aware of him, and that in turn got him more fans.

Most R&B and hip hop artists are black, and I think by them only wanting to connect to their race; they hinder themselves and narrow their margins. Why only be on BET and Black Awards shows? Spread yourselves. Get exposure.! That’s one thing that has really helped Beyonce. She has fans everywhere and off every colour and race!

Another thing, if these artists aren’t the ones leaking their songs, maybe they need more trustworthy staff!

  25. yooo JD. this is such a hard question. since im a lifer, i truely think a lot about WHY is this genre hiphop/r&b dead. is it really dead?? why are artists leakin songs?

at first i think that mostly not the artist does leak his track, it is the company behind him. and artist is not strong enough to do what he/she wants. They gotta follow the rules, which these big companies are giving them.
I really dont like that so much songs do leak.
i am a big usher fan. and some years ago i was really excited about new usher songs and couldnt wait to hear the new albums. usher had a good workin concept. he always did a few years a break, after he released an album. the people couldnt wait to buy the album.
and whats happnin nowadays??? usher is about to release an album comin 2010 and everywhere i look i see newww usher songs leaked. WTF. i heard rico love sayin that he produced some songs on ushers new album and just a few days later i heard everywhere on the internet these songs. thats not whats up. STOP LEAKIN SONGS!!! i want to be curious about a new album. i want to know if the artist has changed and if he has some good tracks.
but whatever, i hope Raymond vs. Raymond will be a good selling record. PLEASE WORK HARD ON THAT ALBUM JD, BECAUSE U ARE THE MAN WHO MADE USHER MUSICALLY WHO HE IS. PUFF MADE HIS IMAGE, YOU MADE HIS MUSIC. GO HARD ON IT.

  26. Kandi said it perfectly. I was just telling someone this! And we kill our own artists with downloading, bootlegging…downright being cheap! (I NEVER do that) It’s so unfortunate! Then ppl wanna complain that R&B is dying…no, we’re killing it by lack of support.

  27. Most albums leak at least a week prior to their release. This includes all genres. If the album is good, some people will still buy it (like me) regardless. If the album sucks, sales will suck as well, lol.

I think the problem lies within the label. Different release dates in different countries is a problem due to the internet as well as too many hands on the finished product.

  28. To my understanding it isn’t always the artist that leaks the records, right? I do think when an artist leaks their own record they are thinking that it will help there sales, but all in all it can sometimes hurt them. Personally, I think it is completely foolish to leak out records. Why is it only happening with R&B and Hip Hop musicians??? I have no clue! SMH

  29. In my opinion our music (r&b/rap) suffers because of that fact that there is no substance at all , even though I like some of it I feel we need to get back to our roots and start with the youngsters and teach them the right way. I really like the fact that you are taking the time to develop DONDRIA , more people should follow suit! I grew up around my uncles and their friends who had a band in the 70’s and they were starving artist. This term does not exist anymore, now everybody just wants to be rich without the hard work and the time it takes to be a artist with longevity . I hate to bring race into to this but how is it that we have not one young group or singers to compete with the young white kids, they are killing us!! What happend to us? I know I’m from the old school of thought but it worked back then and it can work now. Instead of trying to make one hit why not work hard and make alot of hits. With all of the bullshit reality shows that we participate in ( RAY J, FRANKIE&NEFFE, DIDDY)why not have a show with some of the greats teaching the kids everthing they need to know? Something with some substance I know it is just purely entertaiment but it is some dumb shit that we are doing. Who gives a fuck if Ray J finds a woman or not or if Diddy has an assistant or not. I won’t even comment on FRANKIE & NEFFE the other NIGGA SHIT that is on tv these days. JD between you Johnta,Bcox, and Janet there is enough talent to start this . All bases would be covered, this is something that I have been thinking about for sometime now because my daughter who is only 7yrs old has the talent, the look to be great if her talents are developed in the right way. You might say yeah right but talent is in my DNA, my brother is one of the best song writers of this day, Florence Ballard was realated to us, I have a cousin that has a folk cd out and another cousin that is a opera singer in europe her father left the states in 72 and never came back he is good friends with Patti Labelle. An uncle who still sings with the TAMS, Tiny’s dad was in the group from the start. So this is why I say what I say. I do not know how you would go about this but this is my solution to the problem . Forget being a flash in the pan, make some gut wrenching loves songs and music that will stand the test of time. Nobody makes music that make you cry anymore!! I like the bluse so I go to BLIND WILLE’S ON N.HIGHLAND MAN SANDRA HALL, SWEET BETTY, AND HOUSE ROCKIN JOHNSON do it for me, the sad thing is that not to many of us are in the building . I have been going there for almost 20yrs and the artist are the same! Check it out one friday night!

  30. Co-signing Kandi and Mylah!!! Those reasons are exactly why I support artists that I like! Black people always want to bootleg something! You have to support! An artist’s hard work, dedication, and talent is worthy my $10 any day!

  31. Leaks are something that started out as an accident or perhaps a theft of property, but when folks saw that it helped their numbers it became the in thing to do to boost numbers. There are no more real leaks as far as I am concerned. If songs were really leaked I would think the hottest track on the cd would be leaked not the ‘OK’ track. Also in the day when I believed leaks existed the artist would either drop that track or modify it significantly on the packaged CD.

Basically leaks are a sad Attempt at a low budget promo tool now. If a leaked song flops we get the BS excuse that the track was not finished, if the leaked track is hot it goes on the CD with mo modifications (except maybe adding Weezy to the track). I think since ‘mixtapes’ are the new promo tool the ‘leaks’ will take a back seat for a while.

Artists need to come with 12-14 strong tracks and stop with the Tom Foolery. Make good music and it will do numbers regardless. Even if folks bootleg your disc if it’s hot many will still purchase it. There is no excuse and no one to blame for their weak tracks.

  32. I AGREE WITH MYLAH ^^^^^ ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING & BOOTLEGGING IS NOT HELPING THE MATTER!!!!!! PPL PLEASE STOP THAT MESS! I argue with folks about that all the time. We need to show support in a legitimate way, so these artist won’t feel like they need to leak.

  33. i feel so many ways on this issue. first of all i think leaking music is like when you see a movie trailer it gets you hyped to want to see the movie as soon as it comes out. hence high record sells or block buster movie. Now when they leak a song and its not a instant hit this means that they cant pass the rest of the cd off as being great. hence pushing back the release date of cd’s. getting in the studio trying to make that new record to leak…lol to many of these artist want to be rich off the top for bullshit ass music. People not buying that anymore. they need to get in the studio make a great produce, take your ass out on tour and start selling the product. make us like it. stop depending on that one hit on itunes to make you a household name…just sayin…peace

  34. @Casarae – Hip hop has always been about blending genre’s (it was built on sampling).

Other genre’s sell better because they have a dedicated fan base and people who believe in their art not just making music or using gimmicks. Not to say that all hip hop and rnb artists don’t but the label’s involved normally spend too much time trying to steer the album a certain way to catch on to a fad or capture someone else who has sold a bunch of record’s style. Ciara, Rihanna, Amerie are currently slight tweaks of Beyonce…. yeah I said it. Also when you get too deep into buying lyrics and beats from all of the “hot” producers and writers you end up with a bunch of songs and not an album. There should be a cohesiveness when making an album. If you just want to throw songs together you are playing hit and miss even if you got all the hottest writers and producers.

We are in an era of disposable music. In business terms the barriers to entry have been lowered so there is more product and more competition for the same attention. How many albums drop on a week these days? How many would have dropped on a given week in ’96 or ’86? We may like the song but then we hear another song we like and another and another and that first song that we liked got lost in the shuffle. Couple that with the lack of promotion half the times we don’t know when an album came out anymore. So I have a song I don’t quite remember on an album I don’t know when it came/comes out. If it’s beforehand and the leak hit the net I cop the leak cause I was hungry for the music but I’m not even sure when it’s coming out no less with all of the push backs on release dates these days. So now I have the album. Depending on how I feel about the full content and the artist depends now on whether I’ll purchase the whole thing legit…… and if you keep pushing your album back I won’t remember and I’ll ride with the leak and forget about making the purchase altogether.

Hip Hop and Rnb fans have the sentiment of wanting to be up on the newest latest before anybody else. We do it with everything from fashion to technology. So if I got it I’m going to brag about it and others who are interested will ask for it and it will spread quick. Then a combination of poverty, lazy and the hater (I expected more) sets in and people don’t cop by legit means.

I got Ryan Leslie, Trey Songz and Mr. Hudson off the net. Loved them and copped off Itunes (Mr. Hudson’s released on Itunes in the UK so I just switched the countries and copped it in pounds). The content was there so I made the effort. You have to impress now. A 12 track cd with 4 heaters and the rest filler will get downloaded and not sold. 50’s cd has about 4 heaters and some eh and oh no’s…… so it will not get bought (no less I’m tired of his beef formula like I was tired of Em’s crazy first single formula). I know he can do funny and when I was 17 or so when the slim shady lp dropped it was cool… I’m 27 now it’s not cool to me anymore I’ve seen that you have a higher skill level and so I want an album of that which Relapse 2 is allegedly supposed to be.

So after all that it’s a combination of things but in short content (you have to deliver actual good music and not just gimmicks), personality (people have to like YOU too not just the music and if you are a derivative of another artist I’ll prob jack your single and cop their album) and promotion (I have to know when the legit version is coming out cause I surely know when it hits the net).

  35. i think that is a bunch of bull shit like how come all the other artist that we like there shit get linked and the other artist that we dont care for dont get linked i just think that it not right and to me they are hurting they sales and they dont even promote album any more we have check on twitter to here the news or eiher watch 106 to see when it is droppin and now we have to check on billboards to see what number they are in 50 cent came in number 5 which aint to bad but still that a bunch of bull shit i think u need to hit all the artists that we like to tell them to get a twitter in be on there ustream to promote there album because recorded labels aint doin there job

  36. In Susan Boyle’s case, it was the audience she was catering to. They buy records JD! Not digital, not singles, albums!! She has the same audience as the #2 Album Artist Andrea Bocelli and last year’s runaway #1 Album Josh Groban! Our audience is catered to the wrong way. Remember when Beyonce came out last year? She dropped both singles the same day, no leaks. Both videos same day, no leaks. 1st week number: 483,000! The exclusive and wonder has gone away from our audience. Excitement of a live performance, hearing a song for the first time, album covers, nothing is exclusive and an event anymore. That Susan chick sold most of those records on Amazon in presale, breaking Amazon records! There was an anticipation from what people were so shocked about in April. If that was one of our artist, a mixshow single, Urban AC single and REAL single would have been dropped by now! Interviews, scandals, too much access would have killed they’re buzz! I love Dondria’s record, mainly because I had no idea she had that much emotion in her voice compared on her playing around on LTL. It was a pleasant SURPRISE and I think that’s why it’ll hit, like Jazmine Sullivan last year! Leaks take away from the actual experience. 50 album leaked, it wasn’t good, word got out, and you get what he got! I’m available for hire JD~~~~Keep up the Great work on Dondria. Hope this ain’t too long 😡

  37. BIGGREV/EWURAFUA YALL DEFINITELY ON POINT! 50 cent is one artist whos albums always seem to end up leaked in the streets… hmm…. seems kinda suspect to me. and personally the body of work that 50 has all seems the same to me. thats personally why im never fazed by him droppin new shit. like EWURAFUA said, if hes not purposely leakin his shit then he need better staff around his music protecting it. and personally i feel he doesnt make music for the love of creating. its all about just gettin money. thats what i feel makes artists like susan boyle stand out and sell rediculous amounts of copies. the public wanna support what feels real and authentic and different.

  38. hey ! JD! my thoughts r the industry has got a brand new bag! hip-hop-an now r&b artist r targets cuz it’s a target @ hip-hop! an any other genre of music that link up wit hip-hop! hip-hop like go-go! alwayz have to fight the hardest! an the industry been trying to find away to kill hip-hop but can’t cuz it keeps growing! so what do they do breed artist an create all the country rock classic r&b spiritual an whatever acts they want! over top of talented artist out their! It look an feel like my favorite r&b,rap, soul, artist r being squeezed out! 4 made up artist! an so yeah Beyonce taken notes from the best about gettin exposure! but even that don’t can it all the time! it’s blatant in yo face actions of the industry runners! /50ty is rappin his own experiences some woman might have said she will have a baby 4 a milli! watch out JD! stay on top! that what I hope 4 Janet! they cut MJ cuz they can’t stop him he is music!

  39. Specific to Susan Boyle, she was treated like a circus freak. She was on every channel and all over the Internet every day for a week being made fun of. Folks were like listen to the beautiful voice coming from this ugly lady…. She did numbers because she got more free publicity than any artist in history. She was known globally in less than a week… So her first album was gonna fly regardless.
The question is can we produce a superstar R&B female artist who is not physically attractive in 2010? I know Susan would not have made it on American Idol as they have rules about having the “total package” or whatever. What record label will sign and develop a chick that us a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10?

  40. I THINK THE ENGINERS IN THE STUDIO GET PAID TO LEAK THE RECORDS

  41. I think to find out he cause is to find out how a song and album can leak. It doesnt happen from the general public because we have no access to any records. So its internal. Hey JD could share some info on your experience on how a song or album may leak.

Because as a consumer of R&B and hip hop its always told to us the song leaked because of when it was getting mixed or a producer had these tracks or whatever the case may be. So it seems to me its not the general public who is at fault its the label, artist and producers or anyone who may have a copy or access to a copy. Like any leak whether it may be in the white house or a musical act the leak started internal.

  42. 4 words: “Amazing Grace & Silent Night”
a.k.a Two of the greatest all American Theme Songs

SO WHY IS THIS ONLY HAPPENING TO R&B AND RAP?…… “you know what it is”

  43. im not completely sure how songs leak so much in hip hop and rnb compared to other genres. ive noticed lately demos are getting leaked before they are given to artist. is it studios producers, artist, writer ect leaking or hackers? The susan boyle market is of course going to buy than download. the sort of people that are intested in her music arnt on the internet searching for free downloads. i dont want to be ageist but its true. my parants dont go on a computer at all. did anyone hear that pretty ricky sold like 1027 lol. putting them at a chart position of like 97 i think i read. that crazy that it would even enter the charts.

  44. I see the point on buying the album and not downloading it off limewire and what not but it all comes back to same point…Quality! Whether its the music industry or even the movie industry. Look at how that New Moon movie smashed the box office numbers.

People had the bootleg version the day it came out and it was online but it still soared in numbers. Why? Because people expected a good quality film from where Twilight left off. Its all about quality. People don’t want to buy a cd that only has 2 good quality songs on it.

Also, poor content. Everybody talking about the same crap on records; money and sex. A person can only hear so many songs about the same stuff until they tire out. One album that I still bump today is Aaliyah’s One in a Million album. I like and buy albums that i can put into the cd player and listen to from beginning to end without having to skip all over the place.

  45. I agree with a lot of what my fellow Lifer’s are sayin, but I’m gonna add a few more things.

    1. There are some artists that have leaks and still do GREAT #’s, so what’s the explanation for that??? I’m not quite sure whether the leaks come from internal or external sources, but it seems to me that a lot of artists have become LAZY and lax with making sure that we get a high quality album that’s worthy of buying because they know that they can always use that “leak” as a fail safety. I’m actually quite sick of hearing labels and artists try to blame leaks for their poor album sales……NO BOO-BOO, if there were enough good content on your album that would constitute it being worthy of me spending my $10-$20 then I would

2.To continue point 1, With Itunes,Rhapsody,Amazon, etc… We as the buying public now have the luxery of cherry-picking the tracks that we deem worthy of our hard earned $$$. I’ve said this before on here, I listen to leaks and bootlegs and stuff like that & if I’m really feeling a couple of the songs then I’ll just hop onto Itunes and buy them, If I like the majority of the album then I’ll buy the album. It’s that simple.

    3. I haven’t really listened to radio in a couple of years now, but I bet It’s still the same 5 songs recycled every 1/2 hour like it was when I stopped listening. Based on the #’s that Beyonce & Lady Gaga,Jay-Z,etc.. do, I can bet $$$ that those are the artists that are always in heavy rotation and it reflects in their sales #’s because that’s how they pick up those buyers outside of their fan base. I suppose those artists that don’t get the preferential treatment from the top people at the radio stations, the one’s that decide the setlist, feel like the best possible way to get their music heard is to leak it. & that may very well be the case, but then they need to stop setting their expectations for sales too high. That’s where people always get it confused, your base will ALWAYS buy your albums, leak or not, the BIG sales #’s come from the rest of the casual listeners that decided to buy it.

@Kandi is 100% correct, for the most part. Older people are more prone to buy albums because they don’t have the time to be surfing the internet for leaks and they tend to frown upon piracy because they got the funds to purchase what they want anyway.

  46. OK…I am back. I had to go listen to John Mayer whilst I was at it. This topic really has me going!

@Mrggfep…Susan Boyle did not even win Britian’s Got Talent despite all her ‘free’ publicity…so what is the point you are tryna make in regards to American Idol?

And I think your question about what record label will sign an ‘ugly’ chick is probably the reason why albums aren’t been sold. Are you not tired of pretty chicks that can’t sing…but can damn sure work the streets like it was a catwalk? Are you not tired of silicone a$$es/tits? Lacefronts…contact lenses to change eye colour etc???
Maybe having a ‘homely’ face and personality is what the music industry lacks…particulary the R&B industry.

Susan Boyle’s story is also very moving and relatable.
She is a spinster who lived with only her cat before all this fame came to her…I live in England and know that many people, esp. those in rural areas can understand.
She was diagnosed with a learning disablity…again many people of all ages also relate to that.
She was picked on in school…taunted by classmates and teachers alike.

At the end of the day, we are all looking for meaning in our lives and you might be suprised, but certain songs help us to deal with certain issues. We presently dont have songs that uplift anymore and that’s what is lacking in the R&B world.

When I first saw Susan on ‘Britian’s Got Talent’, like many other people, I passed comment about her even before I heard her sing…so yes, I can agree that image is important. But after hearing her sing (they only showed about a 40sec clip), I actually went out and bought the soundrtrcak, learnt the lyrics of the song and learnt the other songs too…ALL THIS ON JUST A 40 SEC clip.

If I told you that I know half the lyrics of the songs I hear nowadays, I would be lying. I dance to Chris Brown’s ‘I can tranform you’, but I dont even know the 1st line of the 1st verse. I only know ‘I can tranform you…U got it’. I dont even take the time out these days to listen or learn lyrics anymore because I know I will get no sensible content.

  47. @Mylah Thanks…oh and I LOVEEEEEEEEE your mixtape its on repeat DAILY. You, Dondria and Melanie Fiona let me know there is hope for real female singers.

  48. @Tongadude… Dude said it best. I think that we as people need to support and stand up for the artist that we truly like. Sad to say, “Pop”, “Country” & “Rock” fans support their artists… even in a recession. I know times are hard, but we are the first to get mad when “our” show is pulled or “our” favorite artist loses their deal. Stand Up!

  49. Many factors have to be examined. I’m all over the place but you can probably get the picture.
-Just because your leak is out there doesn’t mean your album will sell, your leak may be lackluster. If your leak sucks, then hmm… Like movie trailers pull people in to wanna see the movie, your ‘leak’ should do the same.
-It may just be time to actually sign individual artists and not a carbon copy of someone already out.
-Rap and R&B contain a lot of egotistical bullshit. Personally, I don’t want to sing about someone else’s ego. If I can relate to your music, I might buy it.
-A lot of rap and r&b can only hold someone’s attention for a limited time. It usually takes me about a month to get tired of it. Maybe they need to put more feeling into(especially r&b).
-When I heard Susan Boyle was coming out with a cd, I thought ‘maybe I should support it’. Simply because people discounted her on such an open forum just because of her appearance. (by the way, her cd isn’t bad if you are open to other genres, that is)
-Other genres also have lyrics that almost anyone can listen to. Rap and R&B tends to get too graphic. Just down right nasty at times! Everybody don’t wanna hear you moaning on a record. There is a way to be sensual and not sexual. If more people CAN listen to it, more people listen to it.
To sum it up Rap and R&B needs resuscitation

  50. MUSIC TODAY IS NOTHING BUT SHIT THAT COMES OUT OF MY ASS, WHAT MORE CAN I SAY. MUSIC TODAY IS BOGUS AND BORING AS HELL. LOOK AT BEYONCE’S NEW SINGLE “VIDEO PHONE” FEATURING LADY GAGA; THAT SONG IS STRAIGHT UP GARBAGE. BEYONCE IS TRYING TO COPY LADY GAGA’S RETARDED-ASS MUSIC. YOU CAN KNOW FOR A FACT THAT EVERYONE LIKE BEYONCE IS TRYING TO BECOME MORE FUTURISTIC/SUPERFICIAL/UNREALISTIC WITH THEIR STYLE AND MUSIC. THAT’S WHY I SAY NONE OF THE ARTIST ARE BEING ORIGINAL. IT’S EITHER BEEN DONE BEFORE OR DONE RECENTLY. LIKE I DON’T GIVE A SHIT IF THE SONGS GETS LEAKED, I STILL NOT GOING TO DOWNLOAD THE SHIT. IF I WANT TO SUPPORT THE MOTHAFUCKING ARTIST’S SONGS, I WOULD GO BUY THE MOTHAFUCKING ALBUM, IF ONLY THEY HAD 4 HOTTEST HITS THAT I’M ADDICTED TO. LIKE I’M TIRED OF EXPLAINING MYSELF ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC INDUSTRY.

THIS WILL BE MY LAST TIME EXPLAINING MYSELF ON THIS TOPIC. WHAT I REALLY HATE IS THE LYRICS IN TODAY MUSIC. IT’S LIKE PEOPLE ARE NOT WRITING SONGS FROM THE HEART, THEY JUST WRITE SONGS THAT COMES OUT OF THEIR ASS. LIKE LIL. WAYNE FOR EXAMPLE, HE JUST FREE STYLES BULLSHIT. MOST OF HIS SONGS ARE NOT WORTH LISTENING TO BECAUSE THE LYRICS ARE FUCKING RETARDED; IT JUST DON’T MAKE NO SENSE WHAT’S SO EVER. HE JUST RAPS ABOUT SHIT THAT HAVE NO MEANING, NO POINT, AND NO SENSE. GOSH CHEEZES! WHAT LIL. WAYNE IS DOING RIGHT NOW WITH HIS MUSIC IS WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING RIGHT NOW WITH THEIR MUSIC. IT’S LIKE NO ONE PUTS ANY EFFORT INTO THEIR MUSIC. SO WHY THE FUCK SHOULD PEOPLE SUPPORT IT????????????? JUST TO MAKE THEM RICHER THAN US????????? FUCK NO. I SUPPORT THE REAL THANG MAN!!! PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT TODAY’S SHIT HAS NO TASTE IN MUSIC WHAT’S SO EVA, LIKE O.M.G. DO’OH!

ANOTHER THING THAT I HATE ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC IS THE RHYTHM AND BEAT THAT’S LACKING EVEYTHING. SOMETHING ABOUT IT DOESN’T WANT ME TO GET ON THE DANCE FLOOR. LIKE I CAN’T EXPLAIN IT. YOU SEE WITH 90’S R&B MUSIC, IT GETS PEOPLE IN THE GROOVE TO DANCE AND IT GETS PEOPLE IN THE MOOD FOR SEX. WITH TODAY’S MUSIC, ITS JUST MUSIC TO SING A LONG TOO. NOTHING ABOUT IT WON’T GET ME IN THE ZONE. EVERY SONG THAT YOU HEAR ON THE RADIO THAT’S R&B, POP AND RAP ALL HAVE THAT SAME SOUND WHEN IT COMES TO THE BEAT AND FLOW. I DON’T KNOW WHICH SONG IS R&B, POP OR RAP BECAUSE ALL THE BEATS ARE FAST TEMPO. PLUS WITH R&B AND POP ARTIST, THEY BE SINGING TOO FAST LIKE HOW RAPPERS BE FLOWING THEIR WORDS IN THE SAME SPEED AS THEM. IT’S BOGUS!!!!!! OH MY GOSH!

THE LAST REASON WHY I HATE ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC IS THAT I JUST DON’T SEE IT GOING ANYWHERE. I DON’T LISTEN TO THE RADIO AS MUCH ANY MORE, I DON’T WATCH MUSIC VIDEO CHANNELS ON TV AS MUCH ANY MORE. WITHOUT SUBSTANCE, PEOPLE WON’T REMEMBER TODAY’S MUSIC 10 YEARS FROM NOW. LIKE THERE’S NOTHING TO REMINISCE ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC. I’M FUCKING 21 YEARS OLD, AND I LOVE 90’S MUSIC BECAUSE THE SONGS BRING BACK SO MANY MEMORIES OF WHEN I WAS A KID.

IF ONLY TODAY’S MUSIC HAD SOME SENSE. RIGHT NOW, I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN 10 YEARS FROM NOW. IT’S LIKE PEOPLE ARE RUNNING OUT ON IDEAS. WHEN WILL R&B MUSIC GO BACK TO IT’S NATURAL HABITAT? I NEED TO COME THE GAME AND CHANGE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IF I HAVE TO.

@KANDI, MOST OLDER PEOPLE DON’T SUPPORT TODAY’S MUSIC BECAUSE IT’S SHIT, THEY RATHER STICK TO WHAT THEY GREW UP LISTENING TO LIKE 80’S AND 90’S MUSIC THAT HAVE MEANING.

  51. DON’T GET ME WRONG, THEIR ARE GOOD SINGERS OUT THERE WITH GOOD MUSIC, IT’S JUST THEY NOT GETTING ENOUGH EX-POSER.

  52. MUSIC TODAY IS NOTHING BUT SHIT THAT COMES OUT OF MY ASS, WHAT MORE CAN I SAY. MUSIC TODAY IS BOGUS AND BORING AS HELL. 53. I didn’t mean to steal anyone’s points, I just didn’t read it all until now.

  54. Kandi & Mylah,

I am in agreement 100%!! I find myself listening to the radio, asking myself: When did the train run off the track????? I love when artist like Monica work very hard to establish a name a brand and a lifestyle!! Record labels are becoming more and more aggravated by the fact that we have more up and coming entrepeneurs than was expected. Now if we as whole could support that with going to the stores and buying the music….the people could actually let the record labels know excatly what we want to hear!!!! Not taking anything from those who have astounding record sales but like my guy Ed Lover says: C’Mon Son!!!!!!

and that’s all I have to say about that

    Be Blessed,
    GeeGee

    Ohhhh!!!!!
    @ Dondria
You have become an exceptional young woman. I’m very proud of how you have allowed yourself the time to be nurtured and taught. I pray for your success to keep in blossom just as I pray for your life to be blessed with your every dream!!!
    You go Girl!!!!!!

  55. JD look at your cable news companies. They have the most talented young bunch of techs in the fields that you talked about the music industry recognizing. They have to best quality in everthing. Their graphics are flawless and everything is so perfect. Look at FOX News. Don’t they own a movie company. Do they also have something to do with American Idol and that show the Susan Boyoles lady won on. I think it was politics within the industry and a lot of good exposure being that she tied up with this major news corporation. Headline, CNN, Fox I’ve been watching since Bush beat Al Gore and they have gone from small company to large corporation. They have a lot of power and they get their hands on all of the good talented people of broadcasting, graphic design, production a/v, etc.. I’m not suprised at all that she was successful because it was their intention to make her a star. They have the power to destroy people as well. I opinion on the R&B and Hip Hop end songs being leaked. I would think somebody is making shady deals between the studio, distributor, and administrationof the artist for it to be leaked.
The only other way is when they give the tracks to whatever music host and administrator, they are setting up the site without protection and someone is hacking and steeling the files but there would still have to be some kind of word givin from the above mentioned. It does affect the artist’s sells badly.

  56. I think the leaks are working in reverse. Before a leak meant that you were hot and translated into album sales. I’ve read some other posts on here and agree that labels are trying to use the leaks as a way to gauge whether they should push the album or not. Also seems like the labels are keeping the R&B & Rap world compartmentalized, compared to the other genres of music. R&B and Rap don’t need the major labels to sale the music or get the music to the fans. You won’t find any Susan Boyle songs on a blog, but you could find Wayne’s Carter III on every Hip-Hop site on the net before it came out. We need to be in control of our music. I saw a 50 Cent interview where he said his album got leaked in London and then I saw a clip of Lil Wayne’s Carter documentary where his manager said his Carter III album got leaked in London. So I think it’s time for Rap & R&B to move toward controlling their music. These labels want to keep control so they can keep the money flowing in.

  57. I Personally Feel That The Issue Beyond The Artist’s Leaking Their Records Themselves Is The Security Of Where The Tracks Are Uploaded. I’m A Computer Science Minor At A Top 30 University In The Nation And Studying Technology Has Made Me Realize That Many People Might Not Even Know That Their System Files, Specifically Music Files Can Be Penetrated Even WITH A Firewall Through Almost ANY Free Music Download Software.

So The People In Camps Like 50 Cent’s, Which I Recall, Had Leaked Some Tracks Off Of A Recent Album Without 50’s Knowledge, Probably Don’t Realize That They Were Sharing Their Files With The Public When They Placed It On Their CPU’s That More Than Likely Had A Program Like Limewire On It. And I Sincerely Believe That A Large Population Of The People Involved With The RnB and Hip Hop Industries Still Illegally Obtain Their Music Which In Turn Leads To Leaks Through Their Own Cpu’s When They Get A Copy Of A Track That Isn’t Supposed To Be Released To The Public. It’s How Sites Like “rnbxclusive” and “hotnewhiphop” Get Their Leaked Material From Artists Only To Have Them Be Taken Down.

Hit Me Up On My Email If You Want More Info On This

  58. I Totally agree with @bootyinyoface. She said everything I was gonna say.

We are lacking a lot of substance in our music so we are only buying the songs we want or we stop buying all together and just have someone burn it if they purchased it and even then it’s like well I don’t really listen to it that much but it was free. I do love the mixtape thing. That turned me onto a lot of artist I had no interest in or was even curious about. And on that Trey Songz..I’ve always liked him..he was overlooked when he hit the scene cause there wasn’t too much of anybody really singing shit. It was crap and here this young dude comes along and can blow and singing about love and trying to make it for his family and stuff. People was just on that bling bling shit. And Dondria…man oh man..I’m so glad she’s coming up on the up cause it’s been sometime since we’ve had singers singing about something and can actually sing with there voice and not the computers doing all the work for them.

  59. I agree I’m tired of mix-tapes and leaks. It’s so much music available now in R&B/Hip Hop, that honestly who get’s excited anymore. Every artist think it is cool to leak their music. By the time the CD is release we have heard it all. R&B acts need to get back to releasing good product and stop trying to saturate with a bunch of garbage. Im tired of the records that are released and never turn up on the album. Why by the album if the song u like is not on there. The R&B/Hip Hop acts have done nothing but trained us to get music free because the release everything free. So why pay, if the artist are going to leak their music and keep releasing garbage songs all over the net. The record companies and artist need to stop putting everything behind the first week sales. It is so funny after the first three weeks then you don’t hear anything else about the artist at all. Shouldn’t the artist be out promoting the album through other kind of marketing. I guess that is why i have giving up on R&B/Hip Hop and turned to Pop. Check out the new wave of black artist Jason Derulo and Iyaz. You hardly hear of leaks by Pop artist. Thats probably why they have the huge records sells from the anticipation.

  60. Oh and 50’s excuse that his album was leaked and thats why it didnt do well means NOTHING. Wayne’s album was leaked and he did 1.5 the first week. So miss me with that bullshit Curtis. LOL

  61. rap and r and b simply have to much exposure or maybe to much exploitation of its own product.

  62. I think the urban music market purposely leaks records to decrease their record sales. It is a conspiracy and it is effecting a lot of people’s pockets. Because we’re in the internet age consumers are boldly stealing records that have yet to be release. Personally, I think Jay-Z was right when he said “women lie, men lie but numbers don’t”. Numbers don’t lie but, if your record’s being leaked, the numbers don’t count to people who’ve received the album prior to the official release.

The Greatest Producer in the World (Other than Quincy Jones, Jermaine Dupri and Babyface)

  63. I think it’s just the nature of the urban market. It’s the mixtape, bootleg culture and people just not wanting to pay for shit along with the youth culture. John Mayer and Boyle audience is not really a young audience. It really for 30 and older JD. So you always have less leaks with that audience. I didn’t really hear a lot of leaks off Whitney’s album either.

50’s shit just flopped man. Eminem and Jay-Z leaked and they still did their numbers. I heard RnB/Rap doesn’t really do well digitally either. That most of the sales are physically product. I just think RnB/Rap genre is played out. It has really been dominate for like 15 years now. I think people want to hear something different. I mean you look at Keri Hilson, they spent made money promoting Keri and she has just now went gold. How many singles and video Keri had like 5. Energy, Superhuman, Knock You Down, Turn Me On, Slow Motion, Let’s Make Love. That’s alot of money to break a new artist.

  64. WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS ONLY HAPPENING TO R&B AND RAP?

Honestly, because there is nothing new or exciting these days in Rap and R&B to inpsire those types of numbers. When someone or something exciting comes out, people will buy it. Little Wayne did it so it can still be done.

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ARTIST ARE THINKING WHEN THEY LEAK RECORDS? WHAT DO YALL THINK BECAUSE ITS FOR YOU?

I’m not sure what people are thinking when they leak records. If something is good, I will buy it whether it leaks or not. I think leaking may affect sales but not so much so that an album will not be successful because of it. I never understood the whole leaking thing anyway. What happened to building the anticipation for an album?

In regards to Susan Boyle, her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” was beautiful and it was broadcast all over TV and the internet after she performed on “Britain’s Got Talent”. It’s a single on her CD. She’s an underdog with a beautiful voice that inspires people. That’s why she was able to sell so much in her first week. I really feel folks just need to be inspired to buy music from artist. That’s why I feel artists like Jay-Z are still relevant after all this time. He can still inspire people.

  65. For me it means im not interested in the album anymore if its leaked. Why should i pay for something if someone is giving it to me for free. Anyways now a day most of these albums are just horrible. I think there’s only one or 2 songs that are great in the whole album. NY is just floppin cuz no hype is comin out of there anymore. The south seems to put out only dance music and weird songs which has no sense at all. Rap is becoming a joke now a days and i feel a lot of people are not taking it serious. Degrading our women, fake image (“cought” “Plies”) and about 90 percent of the rap industry. In the words of Ed Lover “C’mon SON!!!” i think rap artist and R&B artist can do alot better if they just take sometime off and look on what all these videos have and do the opposite. I think they might benefit from it.

  66. I just think it has to do with the artist and the music itself. Yes the leaks are bad for the industry but they are also good to the artists that are putting up good music that you can listen to espcially with artists that have/or can get a good solid fan base. for example look how much music wayne leaked alone and look how well the C3 did. I think if Drake keeps releasing music like his SO FAR SO GONE material and comes hard with THANK ME LATER he will easly do Waynes numbers too. IF YOUR MUSIC IS LEGIT & HAVE A STABLE FAN BASE AND THE RIGHT MACHINE BEHIND YOU leakin music helps you more than it hurts you.

p.s….an example is Wiz khalifa who is also some what new, he has a fanbase and his music is solid only thing is he doesnt have the right machine behind him

  67. i don’t know i love my r&b and some rap music not all……..mos def…common

  68. i don’t know why they leak shit because it just allows people to get music for free and it hurts sales. i mean sales are already down these days because everyone uses lime wire and stuff. which is stupid because i feel like if you like that music and artist why not support them and buy their music instead of stealing it. ya the artist may not need the money but its not just about money its about having respect for that artist and they work they do. so respect the music .

  69. garbage ass music is the problem…there is no life in it just a bunch of synth & artificial drums sounds and weak singers..you can’t use a dope single to trick us into buying a whole album

  70. To be brutally honest JD and this is from the bottom of my heart, this is truly what I think… Niggas don’t have nigga’s backs the way we try to make everybody think. Rap and R&B music is mainly black folks driven music… Sad but WE still have this “eat or be eaten” mentality. I strongly believe that the folks, friends, whoever whom are the closes to our urban artists are on some “Scheme, scheme, plot, plot, I’m headed for the number one spot” type shit! (shout out to my boo, Luda.) I feel like somebody is doing what the fuck they think necessary to knock these artist off they shit because that person(the offender) with somehow benefit.

    Nisha
    XOxo

  71. Imma just be honest Jermaine. I can’t stand 90% of the music from the rnb/hip hop artists today. I used to buy a good 10 cds a year and get mad because I’d have to pick and choose who goes in the car…until I got a 12 disc changer. 😉 But now I have a truck with a 6 disc changer and the newest album in there is Discipline. I was already picky with the music that I buy…but now these folks make my choice not to buy that much easier!!!

As for those that are “leaking” their albums, they’re just proving that they don’t have the skills to sell like other artists did back in 01 and 02 because their albums are wack. I mean Amerie sold 12,500 her first week and Susan sold 669,843…who’s more hungrier?

  72. HIP HOP AND R&B ARE SO WACK RIGHT NOW IT’S A SHAME. LEAKED OR NOT LEAKED IT’S TERRIBLE MUSIC.

  73. i dont know about everybody else but i personally feel when an artist album leaks it lets me know if i want to go buy the album or not. it encourages me to buy it or bootleg it. but its a recession now a days so i think people just be bootlegging lol. idk, but if i really like an artist and their album leaks and its tight, ima go support it. thats just me tho.

  74. Listening to that Whole Chris Brown Now!…Got Timbaland’s new Shit.got clipse new shit.been had 50’s.Shit I might even have Dondria’s lol Naw ill suport her!!! Cuz she Sex-A!!!!Its fucked up cuz yall gotta eat to you know but I support SOME ppl if I like their albums!! Usher is a number 1 for me..That dude always gets my damn money ya dig b/c I am a listener of his music..Real Talk….50 SHIT WAS UMMMM HMMMM BUT THE MOVIE MADE THAT ALBUM RELEASE WORTH GETTING AND I THINK IT CAME WITH JAM’S DOC BUT I STILL HAD THE BOOTLEG!! THEY FUCK UP WHEN THEY RELEASE THEIR SHIT EARLY CUZ IF I HEARD IT AND BUMPIN IT IN THE WHIP THEN WHY THE HELL WILL I GO BUY IT AGAIN TO BUMP TWICE??? SEE MUSIC IS A LIL DEFF….FOR INSTANCE TKE GAMES…I GET BOOTLEG PC GAMES 2 BUT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOME SORT OF BUG IN IT TO MAKE ME SAY FUCK IT AND BUY THE REAL THING U KNOW..OR A MOVIE…I MIGHT ONLY HAVE A CAM VERSION TO WATCH WHEN IT FIRST RELEASES SO IM LIKE FUCK IT WE GONNA GO SEE THE CLEAR SHIT FIRST THEN WATCH THE BOOTYLEG!! SO THEY HAVE WAYS TO STILL MAKE MONEY YOU KNOW..NOWW MUSIC WTF DO YALL GOT JD!! A FUCKIN ALBUM COVER WITH CREDITS….IDC ABOUT THAT SHIT..I WANNA HEAR SONGZ ND DON’T CARE ABOUT READING THAT DAMN TAT ON HIS CHEST LMAO!! …ALSO PPLE DON’T EVEN BUY FROM THE CORNERS NO MORE…THEY DOWNLOAD IT THEIR DAMN SELF SO NOW BOOTLEGGERS DON’T MAKE ANY MORE MONEY EITHER..ONLY OFF OF MIX TAPES PROB..IM FROM NJ/NY SO I KNOW MY SHIT! TRY GETTING RID OF FUCKIN CD’S FIRST. I GOT TV’S IN MY CAR THAT PLAY SD CARDS AND LOAD ALL MY MUSIC ON THAT SHIT..I ONLY USE CD’S FOR MOVIES AND THEIR DVDS TO B EXACT. TIMES ARE CHANGING AND THOSE RECORD SALES ARE SLOWLY LEAVING…AND ALSO STOP PUTTING OUT FUCKING 12/13 TRACK CD’S….ARE YOU KIDDING ME…..PUT OUT A FUCKING 18 TRACK ALBUM WITH AT LEAST 13 GOOD SONGS IF YOU WANNA MAKE FUCKIN MILLIONS.STOP BEING LAZY….50 STOP LETING DRE FUCK U AND EM’S BEATS UP…ITS WACK BUT 50 MY NI99A HES ON POINT BUT MUSIC IS UMMM HMMMMM….MARIAH CAREY HAD AN GR8 LBUM AND IM A DUDE SAYIN THAT SHIT NOW SHE HAD A STR8 PLAY THROUGH ALBUM…NOT TO MANY HAVE THAT…TREY AS POPPIN…GUD SHIT…JAY WAS IITE…BLUEPRINT 3 WAS NOT FIRE…IT JUST PRODUCED HEAT..SO I BOOTLEGGED THAT SHIT TO!!!R KELLY NEW SHII IS NOT BETTER THAN 007 MY OPINIONS LIFERS) JD COMMENT BACK ON THE VID AND LET US KNOW WHO YOU FELT HAD THE BEST RESPONSES PLEAS..LATER LIFERS

  75. O YEA YOU KNOW WHAT I ALSO WONDER JD???? HOW MAN ARTISTS OUT THERE REALLY BUY THESE ALBUMS OF OTHER ARTISTS…JUST LIKE DJ’S….THESE NI99AS DOWNLOAD WHATEVER YALL DON’T GIVE EM TO PLAY!!! THEY JUST WONT PLAY IT AHEAD OF TIM BUT THEY BE PLYING THAT BOOTLEG SHIT TOO…

  76. I dont care if the single or the whole album leakes I thinks its better that way that potential music buyers can listen to what they might purchase! imo For example I like Chris Brown songs and I will buy his album only because he leak some of his songs I like I will def support him!

  77. JD, we need a Oceans 7 LTL video on this topic! I think I agree with most of the post so far, Artists messed up the game by being lazy and dropping bullshit music! Wale dropped the best music of the year, he’ll never get the sales he deserves cause it was leaked waaaaay to early. By the time it dropped most people was tired of listening to it. We want to support Artists but I can’t justify paying for something that we get for free.

  78. It’s nice to see that a lot of the younger folks feel the same way about the current state of rap & r&b and the industry. It’s good to know that its not just something that the 30 something and over crowd feels. The last time I got excited over any new R&B artist was Chris Brown with Excuse Me Miss. Run It was cute but Excuse Me Miss made me take a 2nd look at him and his work. Now, I’m looking forward to what Drake has to offer. He seems to have what it takes. We’ll see. I think what he did with his mixtapes was genius. He had a hit record on the radio that was free. Building anticipation for your album through releasing QUALITY free music is smart to me (not leaking your album that you’re about to sell). A lot of the songs on his mixtape were good enough to be sold. The bar is already set. People are expecting a certain level of quality from him and I think his album will sell because of that.

As far as rap goes, there are few current quality brands in Rap. Little Wayne is a brand. Kanye is a brand. 50 is a brand. I’m not sure about some of these other rappers…what are they selling? What is their brand? Where is the inspiration?

  79. People have been tryna band Rap 4 a while, so if songs/albums r then there’s no reason to buy the album(not me personally, I’m just speaking from a general consumers point of view). Which will result 2 a reduction n sales & @ dat point “Old White Guys” will no longer invest $ n2 an artform dat has no positive income.

  80. When I saw this topic it really made me begin to think about why only urban media suffers from leaked projects. I would say its a plot by the “MAN” but really its not because a lot of urban artists put out so much music that is a lot better then material on their projects that gives consumers a distaste in purchasing the music and look to free outlets to get music. Also the leaks that come from the urban network is the labels fault for not protecting artists material in the urban market. While urban artists are left to fend for themselves against the leakers, pop and rock artists are very well protected by both the label and management team of their projects, why don’t urban acts get the same protection. Lastly, it boils down to the fan’s loyalty, rock and pop fans are so loyal to their camps they go out and buy the music the first day, week, whatever. You don’t see to much of that in Hip-Hop anymore; however, that is because of the embarrassing material both Hip Hop and R&B acts put out. Nothing exciting seems to not be coming unless its from the usual suspects like Wayne, Jay, Jeezy, or other big budget artists. JD I really think you should do a living the life episode about this topic seriously.

  81. There is the possibility of positive and negative reactions to leaked songs and albums. If consumers dont like the leaked songs, they may hesitate to buy the album. If too many songs are leaked and none of them are HOT, im definately not buying the album. Its all about branding now. A hot record does not mean you will sell 500,000 the first week. Susan Boyle was made a brand b4 she even started working on a project. They could put her on anything right now and people will eat it up.

On the other hand…. consumers know what they want from certian brand names. For example, LL COOL J is a brand name. But nobody wants to hear him rap anymore. They would pay to see him in movies or on tv.
In todays paparazzi world.. one can become a celebrity just by dating a celebrity…lol.

  82. I think the current state of Rap and R&B has been in trouble for some time now. I actually will be glad when can get to a point where true talent is appreciated. I think what the record industry is doing with RAP and R&B is looking to the consumers to let them know what to put out. How did that happen? Consumers should not determine what an artist puts out, I think the artist should be able to be creative and put out what feels good to them, not what the current trends is. That’s what keeps the music industry exciting when artist are free to be yourself and do u. That is the reason no one is able to distinguish one artist from another artist they all sound the same. When a Luther song comes on you know that’s Luther, or Stevie, Marvin Gaye, because those cats had their on sound, when it stop being cool to be an individual?

  83. John Mayer did leak but was shut down across the board in 5 minutes…

  84. I think the current state of Rap and R&B has been in trouble for some time now. I actually will be glad when can get to a point where true talent is appreciated. 85. I don’t get why artist would leak their albums themself unless they think it is the only way to get fans excited. Instead just release some songs that are not on the album as a gift on the internet and don’t act surprised, put a mixtape out to show your talent…

I think most of the leaks are not the artist fault… Like Jay-Z album, there is no reason he would get his album leaked because he doesn’t need that to sell. Or Alicia Keys’ album that just leaked on the internet :she already had 2singles out and she performed 2 new songs live on youtube the other night, at that point you know if there are chances you’ll like the album or not. The only thing it can do is being damageable for sales number especially in these financial times.
I think at that point it is due to bad surroundings, or being unfortunate that someone somewhere in the production chain is not reliable!

  86. easy not to be racial or anything but most black just dont buy cd’s white teenager or older people do

  87. imma just say, um, you can preview a sample of album songs on websites like amazon, and get a vibe if its something you would bump. i dont know how that turns out sales wise for artist, but for those talkin bout the leak helps them decide if theyll buy it. well there are means to sample songs before you purchase them without gettin the bootleg. plus, its the day and age of the net, and the rap game has just created little value for itself over time in my opinion. too many rappers, too much crap, too much beef, too much shit to weed through. i think thats affecting a lot of sales too. people are like, okay, another rap album. why 50 didnt do to well, who knows. shit was fire. maybe because he dropped some hot mixtapes and people were content with those, and the shits they get off mixtapes. maybe they didnt know, maybe they didnt care. susan boyle was a phenomenon because of how she just shocked everyone with her voice and well, looks too. no shocker she did some good random shit. nowadays i just bump whats on a mixtape, and i unfortunately dont care to much to download an album nowadays. r&b is just not my thing anymore, its either boring as fuck, or too whiny, but personally it just aint really my thing anymore. but im a complex consumer. im stuck in limbo of caring and being like, how will spending 10 on an album change anything in my day. i could spend ten at the bar for two jack and cokes, meet some randoms, and kick it. maybe im just not a fan anymore. so sad. im a spoiled internet brat who knows there is tons of free music out there, even legally, so fuck it, ill go do that.

again, i dont know. there is just too much hip hop too me. thats one of the reasons i dont purchase like that. shit needs to get slimmed down. its like hollywood throwing out a new movie every week, and most of them are shit. too much to keep up with. where’s the worth in the product if you just dumpin shit after shit hoping for a hit. i aint gonna lie, ive copped albums off torrent, listened to them, and been like, shit, the hottest joints is the ones on the mixtapes. NEWJACK CITY 2, the hottest joints to me where the shits that were already out in the streets beforehand on his previous mixtape, or other mixtapes. i follow bow, thats the dude, but honestly after years of the hottest joints being on the mixtape, i just dont care anymore. give me whats on the mixtapes, and ill work with that, everything else i catch it in the club. i aint hype for hip hop right now, but i mean the country is in a slump. hell, the world is in a slump. shit happens

ugh, i do miss the hype of album releases. i could probably type out something even longer and drawn out, but thats too much work. i think we all know why,and its a vast collabo of all things going on that are affecting the entertainment industry. the economy, piracy, lack of worth, beef, shitty rappers, shitty content, corny lyrics and beats, ect.. there is a lot of shit affecting the game

  88. leaked music:I thought the record execs was doing that to get people interested in the music. Black people are not the only bootleggers somebody had to release the music for them to get it. IF music was real again it would be sooo nice again….I have heard 50 cent talk on the radio and he is soooooooooo smart but he dumb down his music which is disappointing. He not in the street anymore but a business man lead folks to be leader of their own domain and forget the coke bottle girls and hood life. That the same for you JD talk to people about how to make it and stay there and not about the chicks and drinking and clubbing. Also I think Leaking music is a sign of the album aint that great too. I never heard of MJ album being leaked??? R&B and Raps fans keeping asking for some REAL music and they aint getting it and then it not making the radio when there is something worthy. IT a recession too people aint going to waste music like they did at one time either you betta bring it nowadays or get low numbers as well. Think Chris Brown is going to smash it with numbers next week(shall be interesting to see)

  89. hmmmmm very interesting, never thought of it like this.

  90. point blank – nigga shit is out. come with something worthwhile. this means stop with the faux gangster, bling-bling, party till i die crap and give us some real substance that doesn’t sound like the same old crap we’ve been hearing forever. Put some soul back into the music. Susan Boyle has real talent. That woman can sing her butt off! When she sings “I Dreamed a Dream” I can feel every emotion. Monica has the ability to do that as well…which is why we love her. But if her album is filled with club BS, it won’t sell. It will be bootlegged. We are tired of nigga shit and gimmicks. How many more ways must we say this?!?!?!

  91. Chris brown shit is ass
Being able to hear an album before you spend your funds is just being smart
Chris brown cd and 50 cent cd have NO content or quality at all
But most folks buy albums based off other shit that has nothing to do with the music
Like most people (chicks) is buying chris cd because of looks and wanting to marry the nigga And cause they feel sorry for him
Not because the music is good
Because its ass the cd is lacking
And 50…. no ones really checking for him
And gucci the folks that are easily entertained are gonna buy his album
Gucci album has no content whatsoever

R&B and HipHop been fell off with so called artist like Soulja Boy, JBar, Chris Brown, Gucci, OJ, Wacka Flame, Rich Kids, Sean Kingston, FloRida, Bangs, Cassie etc
These people are gimmicks with no quality music and they will never give music any kind of classic because they wack

  92. Andrea Bocelli is truly a master. He has a super great voice that sounds heavenly.;:*

  93. Josh Groban is one of my favorite classical-pop singer after Hayley Westenra’~-

  94. Josh Groban and Charlotte Church are two of my favorite classical singers-“”

  95. there is no other great male voice than Andrea Bocelli, “”;

  96. josh groban is my favorite classical artist , he has a very beautiful voice~,~

  97. Definitely Travis.

  98. i like Josh Groban and Hayley Westenra, both compliements each other when it comes to vocal quality”:,
