TALK TO ME!!!!

WHATS UP LIFERS!! I SAW A FEW COMMENTS SAYING THAT R&B IS MAKING A COMEBACK. SO THAT SPARKED TODAYS QUESTION. IN THE 80s WE HAD MICHAEL JACKSON, LIONEL RICHIE, RICK JAMES, LUTHER, ANITA BAKER, PRINCE, AL B SURE AND ROGER. IN  THE 90s WE HAD BOBBY BROWN, JODECI, R KELLY, TLC, GUY, SILK, BOYS 2 MEN, AND SWV. WE ALL KNOW THE MUSIC WE HAVE NOW SO MY QUESTION IS: WHAT ERA OF R&B WAS THE BEST TO YOU? WHY?

TALK TO ME!!!

  1. imma say 80s & 90s.
80s was soulful & heartfelt….music was there passion…they wanted us to feel good & inspired.
90s was HOTT because it came with the same elements but mixed it with hiphop…& gave us a new sound.
just my opinion…i aint no music expert..lol)

  2. in the 2000s..its how much money am i gonna make if i bless this track….lolololololol
    Lets take it back!!!!

  3. I wouldn’t say one was better than the other. Yet, with time there will always be upgrades as far as the technical aspects are concerned.

  4. I will go with the 70’s and the 80’s………. The songs had more feeling. They felt good and still do. I’m a 80’s baby, but My mom schooled me on her music early.

  5. The 90’s for me….I’m a 80’s baby so that is what was out when I started to listen to music. I really enjoy the soulful music that gave you that feeling. I loved he sincerity in the music.

  6. probably the late 80’s early 90’s for me.

  7. I would say the 90s.

  8. Im an 80’s baby.,so I grew up listening to the artist that you named.,especially Anita Baker and MJ!!!.,Love them all. So to choose an era is so hard. In those days music actually had substance. You felt the love and passion in the music and it also made you want to experience the love they were talking about in their songs.,Luther V especially. I remember listening to Al B. Sure “Night N Day”.,Anita Baker “Sweet Love”., and many other artist in both eras and being messmerized!!,I do miss “REAL” R&B and find myself going to youtube and other music sources just to hear artist like EW&F, D’Angelo, Faith Evans, Jodeci.,Anita Baker.,SWV.,etc..,just to name a few!!! I don’t even listen to the radio anymore!!.,R&B music in this era has lost its ability to draw people in.

    So to answer your question.,BOTH!!!!.,LMFAO!!

  9. I can’t really say there was one specific era I like more. I love music. Any kind if it moves me. I love ballads more than anything. Every era has favorites for me. So for me, I can’t just pick one era, because I love them all and I am sure I will love the ones to come. I am so glad that youtube is around because there is nothing like pulling up old songs that you can remember when you were a kid. Love it!!!!

  10. Yesterdays TALK TO ME QUESTION/ VIP & IS BEING A ENTERTAINER THE TITLE MOST STRIVE 4? Those who try to sneak into VIP either want to be seen as something they’re not or they just want to be where it’s officially happening. I would say that a large part of ones aspirations to be a celebrity is based on $ making potential & the elements of VIP treatment once they’ve reached that well known status.

  11. Imma have 2 go like @charm. The producer and say the 70s is muh fav JD I’m suprised u didn’t have tht on there….I may not kno all the artist or the names of the songs but I kno good music…it was full of soul and strength and true love laid out on wax

Now of the 2 givin id have 2 say 90s music…it was the best of both worlds…if gave u tht party vibe and tht calm sensual vibe…u c turn on track 5 and do ya 2 step thn track 8 2 get married…lmao

  12. I’ma say tha 80’s..back then music had a more meanin to it..shiit thats how some of us were born now, from that Good BedRoom Muzik..Lol!! Ima 80’s babe but Pops did skool me on the 70’s muzik 2…So I perfer ole skool muzik any day…

  13. The 80’s & 90’s Definitely produced A LOT of Classic music and Iconic artists. I can’t really say one is better then the other because each era brought something new to the game. I grew up in the 80’s & 90’s so each artist takes me back to a certain time period in my life. Helps me relive the good and bad. I will definitely say that both eras heavely influenced who I am. But I can’t say that anyone is better!

  14. Usher (of course)
    Ne-Yo
    Trey Songz
    Avant

and most importantly Chris Brown’s upcoming album needs to be a success….
so it(R&B) can be officially back

Ne-Yo needs to come out with a new Album!
    Avant…<<<samething

and Trey Songz is doing his shit!!

  15. Global Warming; I am concerned with reguards to it’s affects on civilization. It is evident that there has been a multitude of catastrophic disasters in the last decade & man is incapable of mending the irreparable damage.

  16. Hold up, Im a 80’s baby.. Im a grown man and I still got a silver glove!! Michael was so beast in the 80’s & 90’s, Im sure he made us all do some crazy shit. But to choose, I think both era’s where awsome just because the sound’s are so different, So unique and the artist sing with passion and not a thought. I especially loved Sade.. oohhwee was she fine! i swore she was going to be my wife back then. I miss the 80’s and 90’s.

  17. Flawless how you just gonna respond to all the Talk to me Topics in ONE totally different one. LOL

  18. i would say trey songz is making it hot and representin r&b…yuuuppp!!!!!

  19. You left out Stephanie Mills, Melba Moore, Shirley Murdock, Regina Belle, and Patti LaBelle. LOL I grew up in the 70s and 80s like you Jermaine but I love the 80s more…yrs 10 – 19. The music back then seemed more real to me and I could relate to it. Artists of the 80s took pride in what they were singing about and putting out. I feel like a kid again whenever I hear an ol skool jam. Most of my music collection is from the 80s. Now if I could only get those videos into my collection as well…

  20. The 80’s … HANDS DOWN!! Prince, Michael & Janet …. ‘Nuff Said !!

  21. JD how could you forget the GREATEST JANET omg SMH das all i listen to and i love it so the Janet era LOL but i love the 90s im kinda young so i have a feel of the 80s Beyonce and Janet. any era. :o)

  22. The 90’s because that’s when music was real music. Nowadays most people get accustome to nonsense so anything is hott to them

  23. I love them all…I’ll even take it as far back as The O’Jays, Lenny Williams, Earth Wind & Fire and of course the Jackson 5!!

  24. Sidebar: It doesn’t matter what era we’re talking about, past…present or future…JANET & MICAEL WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST HANDS DOWN

  25. I finally desided to post a comment on this site. Great topic JD.
I would have to say that the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s were great eras of R&B music. You had the one’s you named, the one’s @anitaltl named, Chaka Khan, Angela Winbush, Phyllis Hyman and many different groups in those times that focused on feeding the soul. I listen to nothing but old school music and im 22 years old. I agree with @the_truth about music today. Artist today are way to gimmicky.

And not to step on anybody’s toes but I knew somebody was going to throw Janet in this. To me, Janet was not R&B. She’s a great entertainer and POP artist, but not R&B. Ive listened to all of her albums from Dream Street to Discipline. And back in the 80’s and 90’s Janet was str8 up POP. So if the question was who was a great “POP” artist back in the 80’s and 90’s she would have it HANDS DOWN!! Dreamstreet reminds me of an album Tiffany wouldve put out!! Catch what im saying. My opinion.

  26. what about bobby womack,,, willie and lenny williams… wow… They the word play was great back then. are the years prgress the words and content change same song different words. i love to 70 and 80’s…

  27. I’m witchu Keera Michael and Janet will always rule!!! 😀

  28. 80s hand down…MJ and Roger..please people wish they were that hot!!!!

  29. @kandi…I wasn’t gonna say ntn…lmao!! I jus smdh!!

@neenee I’m glad u broke tht dwn the way u did…no matter how much we try 2 b impartial we can’t…we r probably gonna b most drawn 2 the music tht. U heard frm 10-19…tht is ur most impressionable age range…also a period where we struggle 2 make identitiy…I honestly hit more wit 90s music, but I do appreciate the others…thinkin tht way I ca c y sum1 14 may think pretty ricky is the best boy group everrrrr!! Lmao ugh!!

  30. I think the 90’s going into the 2000’s is ok, but my fav era would have to be the 50’s into the 70’s music. Its someting about old old school music that just out shines todays music.

  31. i was born in 1990….and i like the late 70’s…..all of 80’s and 1990-1997…..after 1997 it fell off….but i think Trey, Dream, Day 26, Sammie is making a slow comeback!

  32. MOST DEFINITELY THE 90’S!! THAT’S WHERE ALL THE GOOD MUSIC IS AT. I GREW UP LISTENING TO NEW SKOOL MUSIC FROM THE NEW JACK SWING DAYS, TO THE SLOW JAM DAYS, AND TO THE R&B BALLAD DAYS. I WASN’T INTRODUCED TO 80’S MUSIC UNTIL I WAS LIKE 8 WHEN MY UNCLE SHOWED ME BUNCH OF RECORDS FROM THE 80’S LIKE FREDDIE JACKSON, MARVIN GAY, STEVIE WONDER, THE GAP BAND, MTUME, CHAKA KHAN, ZAPP & ROGER, AND ECT. I WAS LIKE WOW, THESE PEOPLE CAN SING, LIKE I WANTED TO SING JUST LIKE THAT. MY UNCLE IIS A HUGE FAN OF 80’S FUNK AND 80’S BALLADS, AND LISTENING TO 80’S FUNK MADE ME WANTED TO CREATE MUSIC LIKE THAT, BUT IN A WHOLE ANOTHER WAY WHICH I HAVE BEEN EXPERIMENTING WITH SOUNDS SINCE I WAS 15. NOTHING ISN’T BETTER THAN 90’S MUSIC. 1991 THROUGH 1998 WAS WHEN MUSIC WAS THE SHIT HANDS DOWN. 1988 MUSIC WAS GOOD, MY MOM OWNS A LOT OF THE RECORDS FROM 1988. BUT ANYWAYS.

I SHOW MY FRIENDS MY R&B ALBUM COLLECTIONS AND CASSETTE TAPE COLLECTIONS FROM THE 90’S AND THEY WERE LIKE LAUGHING THEIR ASSES OFF SAYING THAT I’M OLD AND SHIT. BUT ONCE I SHOWED OFF ALL THESE GREAT MUSIC, THEY WERE LIKE LAYING BACK AND ENJOYING IT. THEY WERE LIKE, “YOU ARE RIGHT, THIS IS THE SHIT!” I HAVE TO PROVE TO THEM THAT 90’S R&B IS THE SHIT FROM TODAY’S R&B CRAP. BUT THEY WERE LIKE, “YOU GOTTA GO WITH THE TIME NAKITA.” BUT YEAH, I HAVE TO TEACH THEM 90’S MUSIC BECAUSE ALL THEY KNOW IS TODAY’S RAP MUSIC AND THEY DON’T GIVE R&B A CHANCE. I LIKE TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT MUSIC AND I LIKE WHEN PEOPLE EDUCATE ME ABOUT MUSIC BEFORE MY TIME LIKE HOW MY DAD INTRODUCE ME TO SOME 60’S ROCK AND ROLL AND HOW MY UNCLE INTRODUCE ME TO SOME 70’S AND 80’S FUNK MUSIC.

A LOT OF PEOPLE AROUND MY AGE ONLY KNOW CERTAIN ARTIST IN THE 90’S THAT WERE POPULAR AND THAT WERE AROUND LONGER. THERES ABOUT 500 SOMETHING R&B MUSICIANS IN THE 90’S THAT PEOPLE CAN’T NAME BUT ONLY 20.

LET ME NAME ALL THE R&B BOY BANDS AND GIRL BANDS OF THE 90’S THAT ARE ON MY MP3 PLAYER RIGHT NOW.
112, 2nd Nature, 3rd Storee, 3T, 4.0, 4Kast, 4PM, 7 Mile, 702, 7669, A Few Good Men, After 7, All 4 One, Allure, Another Bad Creation, Art N Soul, Atlantic Starr, Az Yet, Before Dark, Bell Biv DeVoe, Black Men United, Blackgirl, Blackstreet, Blaque, Boyz II Men, Brownstone, Changing Faces, Classic Example, Color Me Badd, Coming Of Age, Damage, Destiny’s Child, Divine, Dru Hill, Elements Of Life, En Vogue, Entouch, Eternal, Ex-Girlfriend, For Real, Full Force, Goodfellaz, Groove Theory, H-Town, Hi-Five, Ideal, II D Extreme, Imajin, Immature, Impromp2, Intro, Jade, Jagged Edge, Jodeci, K-Ci and JoJo, Kut Klose, Lo-Key, LSG, Me-2-U, Men At Large, Men of Vizion, Mint Condition, Mista, MoKenStef, N II U, New Edition, Next, Nu Flavor, Ol’ Skool, P.O.V., Perfect Gentlemen, Playa, Portrait, Profyle, Public Announcement, Pure Soul, Ready For The World, Reel Tight, Shai, Silk, Soul For Real, Soul II Soul, Special Generation, Subway, Sudden Change, Surface, SWV, Take 6, Tha Truth, The Boys, The Family Stand, The Force M.D.s, The Rude Boys, The Time, TLC, Today, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Total, Trin-I-Tee 5:7, Troop, U-Mynd, U.N.V., Vertical Hold, Voices Of Theory, Vybe, Whistle, Whitehead Brothers, X-Cellence, Xscape, Y?N-Vee, AND Zhane.

I’M MORE OF A 90’S BOY BAND AND GIRL BAND LOVER THAN SOLO ARTIST IN THE 90’S.

ALL THESE R&B BOY AND GIRL BANDS I NAMED WERE EITHER FAMOUS, ONE HIT WONDERS, AND BROKE UPS. THEY ALL IN THE RIGHT ORDER ON MY MP3 PLAYER. THAT’S HOW MUCH I’M A 90’S R&B LOVER. I DON’T NECESSARILY OWN ALL OF THE BANDS ALBUMS OR CASSETTEES, BUT I DO OWN THEIR FIRST OR SECOND RELEASES, I ALSO HAVE BOUGHT MOST OF THEIR HITS ON ITUNES WHEN ITUNES CAME OUT. I LOVE 90’S POP BANDS TOO, MAN I CAN’T NAME ALL OF THEM BECAUSE THE TOPIC ISN’T ABOUT POP MUSIC, IT’S ABOUT R&B. LOL!

  33. I’d say the 90’s. you had Mariah, Mary, Usher, Brandy, Babyface, and many more. Hell, even the B and C level artists were dope. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an 80’s baby so I fuck with Keith Sweat, Levert, Jody Wately, Anita Baker, etc. But for me the 90’s was it.

  34. 90s all day. It was deep, passionate. It made u feel like u were a part of the song. Some of the early 2000s were cool too. The artists today who I think embody R&B to the fullest would be of course Trey Songz, Usher, maybe Neyo, and thats pretty much it.

  35. Would Chrisette Michelle, Anthony Hamilton, and Musiq Soulchild be considered R&B or Soul? Whats the difference?

  36. JD being an 80’s baby, and having some of my best times in the 90’s, I gotta say both era’s were great. Reason being…the new era bit off the previous ones cause that’s what they listened to when they were trying to make it. The 90’s took the concept from the 80’s and but a vivid sexual tone to it and it was new. The 80’s (minus Rick James) was like soft porn and the 90’s was more hardcore. There’s times when women like that soft music, but they need that hard sh*t to get them right. So my take on it is, 80’s and 90’s R&B complemented each other.

Side note: Tell Usher it’s about fu**in time we got some good sh*t from him. Everyone has needs for a relationship, so I ain’t gonna touch that topic, but he makes his best music when his full emotion is in it.

  37. R&B music is the music that I listen to the most.

I’ll start by saying that the current state of music is pathetic. The lyrics, the singers, the style… Just about everything is lacking. My favorite era would be the 60’s or 70’s. I still listen to music from those times to this day. I love Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, The Isley Brothers, The Jackson Five, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Teddy Pendergrass, Glady’s Knight and the Pips, the list goes on and on! That’s feel good music to me. Each of the artists that I have listed, I’ve gone through their albums and that’s all I listen to for a month until I move to the next. I can’t say that about many artists today. To me these people were real SANGERS. They’d open their mouth on stage and you’d be mesmerized. They didn’t need all the dancing and technical stuff you see today. Their talent spoke for itself. And that’s not to say that they didn’t put on good shows. Their moves and style were always on point.

For me, these are the people who laid the foundation. And they did it so well that it’s a hard act to follow. Music from those times was real soul music that stuck with you like good food. Today’s music is either junk food or a snack, it’s forgetable.

Of the era’s you mentioned, I would say the 90’s. Jodeci, Toni Braxton, Tamia, Tevin Campbell, Brian McKnight, Anita Baker, Blackstreet…. Those are some of the artists that give me the same feelings I have when listening to my favorite era’s.

  38. i’d have to say both! 🙂 in the 80s seemed to have more of rock edge than the 90s though

  39. @Kandi- peeped it *smh*

  40. 60s and 90s. They had exhibited more soul, more harmony, and more lyricism. They new how to express the different human emotions from love to war, from sex to drugs, from proposals to death.

  41. Michael Jackson is timeless. He can’t be confined to a genre of music, let alone a decade. Prince is in the same category as him.

  42. @ Minnie, I love your musical taste as far as R&B is concerned.

  43. I definitely have to say the 80’s & 90’s…Two of the best decades of R/B music ever. People were talking about LOVE in those days..now everything is about sex…Not to say I didn’t LOVE 12play…lol, I’m just saying the Lyrics are just so vastly different. I remember listening to “Playa-Cheers 2 U” and I still want to play that at my wedding when I get married. Along with Jesse Powell’s “You”, now everything is simply, hit it quit…that’s it. I’ve been praying for R. Kelly to make a comeback..and while waiting I was introduced to 007-11. “Anticipation” started my hope again for the return of R/B music…now I’m waiting for Usher to drop Monster, and Kellz to drop Untitled. Let’s get this train rolling again. Oh and honorable mention to Keri Hilson, Latoya Luckett, Mr. Houston. Mariah Carey’s CD is great as well. So it’s on the way back…BCox,JD,Johnta keep doing your parts to make the music we love, and so eagerly desire.

  44. I was born in 74 and my parents had us listening to Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Earth Wind and Fire and I could go on and on, so for me the 70’s 80’s & 90’s were the best era of R&B music. These days the music isn’t the same because everything is more pop than R&B. Lately I find myself listening to a lot of Jasmine Sullivan, Chrisette Michele and a lot of old school 70’s 80’s & 90’s music. I am so in love with Eric Benet’s Love & Life right now, Chocolate Legs is my favorite song off that album.

  45. @Nina- AGREED!!.,Jazmine Sullivan and Chrisette Michelle bring the HEAT!!!.,Eric Benet is a great artist too.,love him!!

  46. jazmine, chrisette, maxwell, anthony hamilton…all golden

jill scott has a great live show – the woman can blow!

another two you all might want to check out – Ledisi and Choklate. these two independent artists are GREAT.

    http://www.myspace.com/listen2chok

    http://www.myspace.com/ledisi

  47. I’d have to say hands down the 80s carries the torch. I love all of the other decade of groups and acts mentioned but there is still an artist from the 80s who holds records unbroken right now. My reason is because the 80s brought more new sounds. Remember the synthesizer and the sampler? I read that Micheal Jackson had one of the 2 very first samplers made in the beginning. Looked like a church organ or something. All of the artist from the 80s really knew their music and what they wanted to say in it. Those guys were brave coming off the wild disco era o take the lead like they did. I think by the time we reached 90s Teddy Riley made an enfluence with that new jack swing. The 90s also got a little raw. Groups like Jodeci and H-town but Boyz-2-men did their thing. Overall, I say the 80s but i’ll still pop in some ruffin, spinners, o-jays, teddy p, al green and isaac hayes. It was crazy in the 70s too. 70s brings back childhood and the days when grownups partied every dam weekend put the kids in one room away from it all.

  48. I love each era for different reasons.

The 70’s for the soulful funk (Chaka Khan and Rufus – Tell Me Something Good, Natalie Cole- Annie Mae, etc)

The 80’s for the explanation of black music (anything from Michael Jackson and Prince, SOS Band, birth of hip hop, being introduced to dancehall, etc)

The 90’s for making me shake my ass on with the New Jack Swing.

There’s so much more great music. This is just a tip of the ice berg.

Can’t chose one decade over the other.

  49. Mint Condition should be added to the 90s list as well. I have yet to hear of a band that does it like them and Earth, Wind and Fire for me. Today’s music just kills my braincells. There are some songs that catch my ear but not enough to actually buy that persons album let alone wanting to hear it. LOL For awhile, I thought Musiq, Angie Stone, Indie.Arie, Jill Scott, Jahiem, Tank, John Legend, and Anthony Hamilton were going to rule the airways but all this gimmicky shit just killed that with the quickness. smh

  50. @ AnitaLTL The radio died a long time ago. they play the same songs all day and are more interested in their sponsors than anything else. it’s a business; they do what brings the money. I listened to the radio the other day just to see what it was like now. 1-2 songs and then commercials for about 5 minutes. CDs and ipods are my friends in the car.

  51. THE BEST ERA TO ME WAS THE 90’S. I LOVE AND MISS THAT ERA IN MUSIC. ARTISTS LIKE DRU HILL, JODECI, BOYZ II MEN, R. KELLY, USHER, AALIYAH, TAMIA, 112, 3RD STOREE, IMMATURE, AZ YET, 702, GOODFELLAZ, IMAJIN, MONICA AND PROFYLE MADE MUSIC SOUND SO GOOD. NOW ARTISTS LIKE TREY SONGZ AND JOHNTA AUSTIN ARE TRYING TO BRING IT BACK AND I’M SOOOO HAPPY THEY’RE DOING THAT, ALTHOUGH MUSIC IN THIS ERA SOUND GOOD, IT DOESN’T HAVE THAT 90’S FEEL TO IT. BUT I WILL SAY THAT THE R&B SOUND TODAY IS KINDA GETTING THERE. PLEASE BRING THAT ERA BACK LOL.

  52. I think R&B is making a comeback because people like Jamie Foxx are using their influence to get their own XM stations and play good music…even if they are putting out stuff like “Blame It”…

  53. I have to go with the 80’s and before(Michael Jackson and Prince) I love to dance and any music that can get me on the dance floor is good with me. And all the smooth songs from anita baker, Teena Marie, And Chaka Khan. That was the best I think.

  54. the 90’s . The 90’s gave us powerhouse production like Babyface, Teddy Riley, and Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis. Countless records from that era are play from start to finish or at least 90% of the record is crazy. Anita Baker’s Rapture is an ill example. 8 records and all of them hot. Janet Jackson Control is another example. If the songs weren’t singles they sounded like they were. Personally, I know every joint on control except number 4. Boyz II Men had powerhouse production/songwriting that made them hugely successful (in addition to their God given talent). Also from the mid to late 80’s to the mid 90’s production started sounding real hard with edgier content in comparison to the funk/soul of decades prior.

  55. I’d go with late 80’s through early 90’s. slipped off into pop, rock in the mid to late 90’s. now i just listen to everything including country. song has 15 seconds if i dont feel it after 15 seconds then i am done.

  56. I’m going with the 80s and early 90s. That the stuff i grew up on like u JD. The songs had meaning, artist were true to their music, it was QUALITY. With all the advancements in technology now, the sound quality may be better, but everyone thinks they are an artist and they get lazy and let the techonolgy mask any talent.
80s was all heart and soul, talent and legends in full effect. Artists now look back to that time for inspiration. Wish we could get more of that back in 2days music.

  57. @Christel LOL Yeah it did and I miss it. I miss calling in and getting my song played instead of a repeat performance every 35 to 45 mins depending on the amount of commercials that were played. I used to listen to this station in Atlanta on Sundays that would play 70s, 80s, and early 90s and now before I got this part time job, I would listen to the ol skool lunch mix from DC on the internet or play cds all day. Radio will never be the same for me…took me some time to get used it. LOL

  58. I’d say overall the 80’s cuz that was when the R&B stars were icons..Michael Jackson..Janet Jackon..Prince..Teena Marie..Rick James..Chaka Khan..Anita Baker ..Whitney Houston…and the list goes on..the 90’s were great too tho thats when u had real performers..but now i dunno we went thru a dry spell and hopefully good r&b will b back

  59. 1st off I gotta sho @minnie some love she got it right

Now 2 those who say the 90s is where the real love songs blah blah…cmon have u eva sat down and listened 2 ANY of the artist @minnie mentioned….I mean Teddy P had me turnin lights off…the music was strong…the lyrics Powerful..the production 1 of a kind…now all u gotta do is boom boom clap and do whateva u want and stamp a hook and u there…I love muh 90s jams but I can’t give them president ova muh 70s funk soul&b

  60. I looooove the R&B music of the 90’s but I gotta go with the 80’s. I think it was the content of the music in the 80’s that I love. The songs were about love and not so focused on the sexual aspect of love but rather the feelings of love. Lines like “I long to see the sunlight in your hair. And tell you time and time again how much I care” and don’t even get me started on Ebony Eyes by Rick James. I love all the 80’s artists you mentioned above. The music was just romantic. In the 90’s we started reminded folks of their jeeps…Catchy? Yes, definitely. But not so romantic.

  61. GREAT question!!!!!!! i am going 2 go with the 90’s. the reason i say that is because those same artist that were tearin shit up in the 80’s were still tearin shit up in the 90’s with the exeption of rick james. i love the 80’s but pop/rock was still the mainstream. by the 90’s more fm radio stations were blazin r&b so our music was finally getting its just do. artistry was more authentic then. the internet hadnt killed the industry and artist really only made money from touring which was the shit cause the summers were filled with concerts that had like 6 or 7 kick ass artist on them. i went 2 a show that had karen white, kool moe d, hammer, and guy. yall remeber those budfest concerts. 2day its about the money and big name producers who 9 times out of 10 give 5 artist the same sounding tracks. i understand having a signature sound but damn. u can literally play these tracks on top of each other. and in the 90’s music made u want 2 go 2 the club or party and show off ur dance moves 2 impress ur possible next gf or bf. now musicis either only about bitches, niggas and money. thats kool 2 but i miss that old muzik

  62. There is sumthin unique about each era, that it stands in a self-made class. Proud 80’s-90’s kid born in 70’s afforded me exposure 2 most of it through familly. 4 the most part, the early eras provided a foundation 4 future eras. I appreciate that I grew up with rap, rock and pop shuffled on 1 radio station. I still listen 2 all types xcept heavy metal & opera, even techno
(r& b style) has grown on me.

    Keep it Inspiring!

  63. Lord I forgot about Janet. .. People don’t know how big janet was back then. I think i fell in love with her when escapade came out!!

  64. 90’s hands down!

  65. In my opinion, the best era of R&B was the 60’s and 70’s. I can’t really choose from the 80’s & 90’s. If I had to I would probably choose the 80’s. Even though those decades had good R&B sounds, there is something about the “classic soul” movement. It was feel good music for your soul. You could feel the emotion and pain in the artists voices. True Rhythm and Blues. Great Quality! I’m only 22 but it’s just something about that kind of music that I cherish. I wish that I could have been able to experience in person.

  66. Since most of the music business is youth driven the answer lies in how old you are or how young you are when you are most excited about music. The R&B music that relates to people when they are 14-20 and 21-25 is when they are probably the most excited about actually buying music.

In the 80’s I personally bought:
    – Al B Sure
    – Keith Sweat
    – Guy

    In the 90’s I bought
    – R. Kelly
    – Aaliyah
    – TLC
    – Boys II Men
    – Jodeci

I can’t put one era over the other because I love them both! It’s like choosing which is your favorite child.

  67. 90’s i’m a 80’s baby i was born right at the end of the 80’s. but i loved people like Mariah Carey Janet jackson, brandy monica. total, groove theory, aaliyah black street, tevin campbell Karen white SUPERWOMAN is my theme song. Michael Jackson.. I gotta say that mariah and janet are my fav i listen to them everyday i love music……

  68. I really want to know what happened 2 next? Please can anybody tell me…?

  69. im going with the 90’s hands down when i was a kid i looked forward to long ass rides just to hear the radio and i couldnt wait to go home and watch the box i love the 90’s rnb and i miss it alot good thing i have a ipod

  70. DAMNNNN IM HELLA LATE. so ima make this short and sweet. everything 99 and older was the shit. im a 80s baby so yall know we all love the music we was hearin in ur momma tummy lmao. i mean come on now. from frank sinatra sammy davis jr sam cooke, skip a few the o-jays isley brother, kool & gang earth wind and fire the jackson 5 just to name a few. yall know the music that made you. then u have the 90s jams, yall cant tell me montel jordan wasnt something everyone was bumpin in the stereo. yall know tevin campbell, boyz II men, blackstreet, tlc, young ass usher, ginuwine, aaliyah, that shit went hard. r.kelly and dru hill was 90s baby makin music. yall know. honestly todays music is cool, but i believe the style heart and classics was all made before 99.

and one last thing. the main reason why i say 99 and older. u tell me r&b song u just go wild on when it first starts. ladies when u hear waterfalls from tlc OR janet jacson thats the way love goes yall go crazy!!!!! fellas yall dru hill – tell me, or these are the times. YALL KNOW K-CI & JOJO ALL MY LIFE, BOYZ II MEN bended knee or ill make love to u, with ur ladies or someone u tryin impress u know u have it in the bag!!!!!!

  71. definately agree with everyone who said R&B is fallin of a lil bit…it’s the same thang ova n ova…it just seem ta be all about sex, not REAL love..people like michael jackson, prince, marvin gaye, whitney houston, anita baker, lionel richie, chaka khan, gladys, aretha, the isley bros., r. kelly, james brown, temptations, smokey, etc they all made wonderful music that made you feel good, made you wanna dance..i find myself listenin to music from the 50s to 90s because after a while you just wanna hear music that makes you feel good, especially in a world like this! :]

  72. da 90’s b/c it was da JANET ERA

  73. o

  74. @biggl48LTL Oh yeah man, music played a big part in my life. My mom used to blast music in the house and car when my brothers and I were growing up. My younger brother and I spend more money and time on the 60s, 70s, and 80s music then we do on the current stuff out there. We used to make mixtapes, me R&B and he would do Go-G0 and rap and then we’d swap. LOL

  75. OMG THE 90’S!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS JUST AN R&B BANGER DECADE!! IM THINKIN ABOUT ALL THE TRACKS THAT I KNOW BY HEART AND ITS JUST TOO MANY! THE 90’S JUST DOO DOOED ON OTHER DECADES IN THE R&B GAME!!! GOOD EVENING! 🙂

  76. sorry abt that i meant also, da late 80’s too

  77. I would have too say that old school music. The music with the Temptations, Smokey Robison, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, The Jackson 5, The Beach Boys, The Distants, etc. I picked that “Old” era, because that was when music had that vibe. There was songs for each emotion. Whether it was Joy, sadness, anger, flirty, etc. You don’t hear that “Old” music nowadays, so I guess the more I don’t hear it on the tvs…. The more I make an attempt too watch those old music videos, listen too those old songs, and just reminisce. (I wasn’t born way back then… lol)

  78. @ anita man I tried dat websit you gave me and I still can’t get my pic to upload

  79. DAMN JD, that’s a hard 1 to answer without being torn between the 2 era’s.
I grew up in the 80’s but didn’t grow up as far as my appreciation for music until the 90’s. I’m ALL for my 90’s music especially in comparison to what’s out today, but I honestly find myself gravitating more to the music of the 80’s. It just seems like back in the 80’s there was more of a purpose behind the R&B music that those artists sang & you felt it………not sayin that 90’s music didn’t have any feeling, it just wasn’t at the same level. I even hear some of the 70’s & 60’s music & get that more purposeful feelin, ‘ya know, the only problem for me with those 2 eras is that everything seemed so tame.

@Soulful One- I see what ur sayin, but for when Janet came out she was R&B. She doesn’t fit neatly into an R&B box or Pop box……Janet has her fair share of R&B hits to be considered in that category although they might now be considered pop, but that’s a whole other topic.
& @Keera- AGREED! Michael & Janet are #1 in my book period!

  80. I was born in the year 82, so I grew up listening to both era’s. The 80’s and 90’s were different from one another but unique . For example Rick James song Mary Jane was about marijuana and Bone Thugs did a song about marijuana and title it the weed song. Anita Baker have songs like angel and you belong to me. SWV have songs like Weak and Always on my mind. Michael Jackson song like P.Y.T and then came Bobby Brown Tender Roni. You definetly hear some of the 60’70’80’s in the music of the 90’s example, Gene Chandler song Rainbow and Lenny Williams song cause I love you, you hear in R. Kelly signature sounds Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Scat style of technique you can hear in music from Billy Stewart, Anita Baker, Bone Thugs and Harmony and Twista.

Both era (80’s & 90’s) was definitely unique. The R & B music was smooth, soulful, danceful (slow dance and fast), sexy (passion, love, romance, foreplay & lust lol), etc and touch all emotions. I like all the artist you mentioned including H-Town, Guy, Next, The Whispers, The Isley Brothers, Xscape, Changing Faces, Kut Klose, Monifah, Brown Stone, Shanice, Tracey Spencer (Tender Kisses) and the list goes on.

Even the movies from those era was unique movies like Electric Boogaloo, Beat Street, Krush Groove, Saturday Night Fever, Strictly Business, House Party etc.

In my opinion the 80’s and 90’s R & B music are both good music.

  81. yo @anita i want that site tooo.

  97. @kinglovejoyltl YEAH I COPY AND PASTE IT FROM MY MP3 LIST ON MY DOCUMENT FOLDIER. PLUS I OWN MOST OF THE ALBUMS, THAT’S WHY I DIDN’T MENTION THE NAMES OF THE SONGS. THE ONES I NAMED, I HAVE THE TAPE CASSETTES.

  98. You’re Tardy for the Party Nakita…all those folks are already in my collection minus Ray J, Christion, Kimberly Scott, Kiesha Jackson, and Tatiyana.

  99. THAT’S GOOD AnitaLTL. THAT’S WHAT’S UP.

  100. the funny thing is, I LOVE Janet. I have all of her major albums. I used to have her debut album. So, I have owned everything except Dream Street. But I will say, with no hesitation, that Janet Jackson is not R&B. She’s Pop. She’s Funk. She’s Dance. She’s done Rock. The fusion of all of that is what I call “Jackson Music” because only she and Mike perfected that.

I think that’s part of why people say that R&B is dying. We’re looking at the wrong artists. Radio and MTV are pushing pop artists more than R&B and putting the wrong label on it. That’s why we look at these guys and say they suck in comparison to the music of the 60s, 70s, and 90s. We’re comparing apples and oranges. You can’t compare Whitney Houston to Ciara/Keri Hilson. That’s like comparing Souljah Boy to Chuck D. It’s not even the same type of music. Souljah Boy isn’t hip-hop; he’s dance rap. Ciara/Keri Hilson are not R&B. Monica used to be. A lot of these “R&B” cats are more like the overly synthesized sound of 80s pop mixed with a the lewd lyrics of Uncle Luke and a lot of rap influence. It’s a hybrid. It’s not R&B.

Have you guys noticed that most of these cats don’t even sing anymore? They talk more than sing. They speak melodically while seemingly reading a bedtime story to their jump-offs. Seriously. These guys don’t woo you anymore. These women don’t move you and bring you to tears. They rarely hold a note convincingly. The ones that can are largely ignored by radio and television.

Neyo had to tell Chrisette to water it down so that the audience could understand her. This woman has a command of Jazz scales that is largely unparalleled in the business at this point. Her only contemporary competition is Jazmine Sullivan. But both of them are trying to appease the audience with more hip-hop influenced music. We’ve got to demand better true R&B by purchasing it when we hear it and looking for it. Myspace, youtube, and CD baby are all good places to scope new artists.

  101. 1989-1997 Hands Down!
New Jack Swing era is still crazy to me! Teddy Riley doesn’t get enough credit on a larger scale in the music community. Keith Sweat ran it for a minute. Bobby Brown still a great if he get his shit together! Blackstreet classic tracks..Fugees birthed us Lauryn Hill who is in a lane of her own. SWV ran NY air waves. DONELL JONES!??? Come on! Case made me want to party on one track and cry on another. JOE need we say anymore?! Tevin Campbell gave us classic with the help of Quincey Jones. Shanice gave us something to hum o. Phyllis Hyman her gift was too much for her to handle. Luther Vandross deserves his own genre lol The only artisit out now that reminds me of that good music quality..actually caring about the craft and makes you feel a certain way is Anthony Hamilton. He can take me into any mood he is expressing in 30 seconds, thats a gift. That time span has toooo many greats to list.

    -25 year old Musicologist! 🙂

  102. @ Anita, I think she fails to realize that most black adults have all of those songs – minus Ray J.

@Nakita 1) I own all of those albums plus rock, jazz, blues, soul, classical… that doesn’t mean that i’m going to go through my catalog to prove a point to someone.

    2) You’re kinda insulting our intelligence to assume that we don’t know about or remember these artists.

  103. 70’s, 80’s,90’s were the best before the youngsters perverted the music, love songs were about love and relationships and trying to get your man or woman back. I’m an old skool chick so I dont listen to any of the music today or watch the videos, Once radio stop promoting old skool artist like Janet Jackson I stopped listening and now I just download all my old music and listen to it on my Ipod. The only exception is Alicia Keys who still keeps it classy!!

  104. Im a 80’s baby, and the song I can vibe on still is the 90’s R&B, but I can also get with songs from the 70’s and 80’s all depends on the mood. R&B need to come back, Ne-Yo, Trey Songz, Johnta Austin(love his voice), Guwine, Tyrese, A. Keyes, I even saw where Tamia, Debra Cox , and Kelly Price is making a comback with a trio thats great. I love great music

  105. @Christel NO THAT’S NOT TRUE. I NOT INSULTING NO ONES INTELLIGENCE. I’M THE ONE THAT SHOULD SAY Y’ALL INSULTING MY INTELLIGENCE, CAUSE YA BEEN DOING IT SINCE LAST. SOME PEOPLE JUST DON’T KNOW ALL THESE ARTIST, AND MOST OF THEM ARE 15 AND UNDER. THAT’S NOT A BAD THING TO POST MY FAVORITE LIST UP. I’M TRYING TO EDUCATE THE YOUNGSTERS ON HERE. IF THEY KNOW IT, THEY KNOW IT. IF THEY DON’T, THAN THEY CAN TRY TO GIVE THESE SONGS A LISTEN. MAYBE THEY WILL LOVE IT, MAYBE THEY WON’T. TRUST ME, IT’S NOTHING LIKE TODAY’S MUSIC THAT’S FOR SHORE. LOL!

  106. @Christel NO THAT’S NOT TRUE. I NOT INSULTING NO ONES INTELLIGENCE. I’M THE ONE THAT SHOULD SAY Y’ALL INSULTING MY INTELLIGENCE, CAUSE YA BEEN DOING IT SINCE LAST WEEK. LOL!

  107. Yeah..I’ll have to go with 70’s, 80’s and 90’s… and there’s a couple of people trying to bring it in the 2000’s. Like Trey Songz…Sammie’s mixtape is on point…Cbreezy’s mixtape is on point too. Lloyd got some hits poppin off his mixtape and I herd Marques Houston’s mixtape the other day and he’s picked his game up big time…and I can’t wait til Jhonta come out with a mixtape unless he already got one and if he do I’d like to know what the name of it is. And yeah all them artist that Anita listed is true. Them kats was on point.

  108. @Christel I AGREE WITH THE WHOLE JANET THING. I THINK THAT’S THE REASON WHY THE INDUSTRY IS NOT PROMOTING THE RIGHT KIND OF R&B MUSIC. JANET WASN’T POP IN THE EARLY 90’S, I THINK SHE HAD MORE OF THE NEW JACK SWING/SLOW JAMS IN HER MUSIC THAN AND ON HER 1998 ALBUM. BUT AROUND WHEN JANET WAS SIGNED TO SO SO DEF, THAT’S WHEN HER SOUND CHANGE. BUT I LIKE IT THOUGH. I JUST DON’T LIKE EVERYONE TRYING TO BE JANET AND MICHAEL. I FIND IT ODD!

  109. I grew up listening to alot of music from my family like Luther, Shalamar, Earth Wind and Fire, Al Green, Keith Sweat, The Whispers, Anita Baker, Sade, and of course Michael and alot of other older stuff and being a 22 yr. old young lady I still bump that in my car because I know and appreciate good music. I really associate with the New Jack Swing Era because of my age. I was also really into Janet (still is BTW, can’t wait for the new album!)… I remember I had a gown from her Rhythm Nation days and I wanted to wear that thing everynight lol. Good music and good artist are timeless. I hardly ever listen to the radio now-a- days. When I do I have it on the Jazz station or the oldies channel because I am so annoyed with alot of the music out today. It’s like people don’t even need talent. If they have a good beat, the beat will usuallly grab your attention but there’s nothing worth listening to other then the beat. Though I have listened to MJ’s music my whole life, I really wish I could have been alive when it was total Michael domination in the early eighties. I have all his music and have enjoyed all his music ever since I was a toddler but due to the hype alot of people until now forgot about how wonderful Michael’s artistry is. Artist like Michael are the real deals. Honestly, I think it would have been nice to be exposed to 80’s music back then. Like you mentioned, Lionel Richie etc. was killing it. I of course listen to the music from that time now, but it would have been so nice to have been exposed to it when it was just released. Here I am going back to Michael again lol….. But I hear people talking about how happy they felt when “Thriller” came out. There was never anything like that before. I wish I could have been born to enjoy the release of “Thriller” Damn, I was 3 years too late haha

  110. Nakita’s 90’s rundown proves what I was saying earlier………
I have to this day or have had in the past 90% of the artists she listed, & out of that list there are only maybe 8 artists that I still listen to on a consistant basis. Those that I still listen to constantly, I would consider to have at least a handful of timeless records (not complete albums per se) & actually most of them came out in the 80’s, which even further supports my viewpoint. Longevity was the key with the pre 90’s artists & most of them managed to achieve just that even if they don’t appear on today’s younger generation’s radar.

  111. @Christel———–On the Janet thing, I get what ur sayin………….but when Janet 1st hit with Control that was in no way, shape or form considered POP, it just evolved into being considered that over the years. The same goes for RN, that had like maybe 3 genuine POP songs (if that) on it & ur right the rest was a fusion of many other genre’s which is what makes her unique as an artist to me.
I’m not gonna go any further on that topic though cuz that’s a whole ‘nother debate…just my 2 cents 🙂

  112. @Christel MAN, YOU SAID IT SO PERFECTLY. MAN I WISH I SAID THAT. THAT’S WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE WHOLE THING TOO.

  113. The 90’s was the best of times for R & B… Yoe boy got laid a lot, when I say a lot I mean a lot. It just seemed like it got girls in the mood real quick. Nowadays they dont sing songs that get the girls in the mood at least that’s what I think. To all the lifers check out a new song that just went up on my brothers page called “You better Know Dat” it’s not a get the ladies in the mood song, but check it out. I’m just grinding for him online. Let’s Go people, keep grinding. http://www.myspace.com/mokanemusic

  114. I FORGOT TO INCLUDE TANYA BLOUNT – THROUGH THE RAIN ON THE LIST. THAT SHIT IS MY FAVORITE SONG. YOU GOTTA GIVE IT A LISTEN IF YOU DON’T KNOW IT.

  115. @Christel- I AGREE w/ your comment in regards to Janet. Thats basically what I posted in my first comment. She is NOT an R&B artist. She may have some R&B songs but so does Christina Ag, and Justin Timberlake, but they are POP artist, right along with Janet. She is a great artist dont get me wrong, as I said before I have all of her albums, I love her as an artist, but she IS NOT R&B and it’s ok.

  116. The best of R&B I would say is the 90s because since I was born in that time. For my geeneration now we don’t have no good love songs like we did before. There are not a lot of R&B singers that can make us now generation happy. You really have to work for this generation to see that you are really bring it so they can buy you album. But I would have to say the 90s cus I heard the 80s stuff but not like that. So its the 90s for me.

  117. The 80’s was the best…..you listed the reason why in your question…MJ, Luther, Anita and so on and so on……omg there is no comparison!!!!!!

  118. DAMN MAN, I LOVE ME SOME TONI BRAXTON RIGHT NOW. WATCH THIS VIDEO, I DON’T THINK PEOPLE NEVER KNEW THAT SHE ACTUALLY HAVE 3 VERSIONS OF ANOTHER SAD LOVE SONG MUSIC VIDEO. DAMN MAN!!! SHE’S LOOKING HELLA FINE ON THIS VIDEO. I HAVEN’T SEEN THIS VIDEO FOR A LONG ASS TIME NOW. CHECK IT OUT, IT WILL GIVE YOU CHILLS. I’M ALREADY HAVING GOOSE BUMPS LISTENING TO THIS REMIX. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7s-PMj6K00
    🙂

  119. umm JD i was born in 91..and i love both eras…i mean the 80’s Michael..R.I.P…was killlin it..i mean that alone was tough…and the 90’s slick rick…MC lyte..TLC..En Vouge was tough..i mean i think both eras are important and both have a very strong impact on wht R n B is todaiie…so i dont think its fair to say which is the best if they both impact on the music we listen to in this day and age

  120. @Bootyinyoface, I get that she has R&B hits like Again, Come Back To Me, and Let’s Wait Awhile. But Control (song or album) wasn’t R&B. That specific song was more of a club track. You bop your head to it. You jump up and down at the concert. You dance when you hear it. The prototypes for R&B was what Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, the Whispers, the Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Tami Terell, Patti Labelle, etc were putting out. Janet wasn’t that. Her music was something different. I don’t think it was exactly like all of the rest of the 80s pop but it definitely had that signature 80s pop synthesized feel to it. However, it was combined with hip-hop and funk influences (think about the movement of the bass and the hard kicks). That’s why I said she was all of that other music and “Jackson music”. Janet, with the production of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, did some innovative stuff. That’s what makes her Janet. Like I stated earlier, I love her. I have every album but Dream Street. But she is in no way, shape, or form an R&B artist. We have to make that distinction. Janet has R&B songs but Whitney Houston is an R&B artist. Drake has R&B songs but he is not to be considered an R&B artist.

Nasty, Pleasure Principle, When I Think of You, What Have You Done For Me Lately, Funny How Time Flies…not R&B.

Rhythm Nation wasn’t an R&B album either. That album’s success was driven by Black Cat (Rock), Miss You Much (R&B-Pop fusion), Rhythm Nation (Rock-Rap fusion with a singer on it), Escapade (Pop), Alright (“Jackson Music”), Come Back to Me (R&B), and Love Will Never Do (Pop).

Even her first album wasn’t R&B. “Young Love” and the rest of that was the cleanest of Pop.

@Soulful One , I’m glad you agree. I just read your first comment and I did pretty much repeat you. Great minds think alike.

@Nakita, I’m glad we can agree on something.

  121. MAN I FORGOT TO INCLUDE TARAL – DISTANT LOVER ON THE LIST. THAT SONG IS THE SHIT TO. MAN THERES TOO MANY ARTIST TO NAME, I’M FORGETTING SOME. OH WELL! THAT EL DEBARDE SONG – ALL THIS LOVE ISN’T EVEN IN THE 90’S. I DON’T KNOW HOW I GOT THAT ON THERE. THAT SONG WAS FROM THE DEBARGE IN 80’S. OLIVIA – BIZONCE SHOULD BEEN ON THERE SINCE IT CAME OUT IN 1999. SHIT, I FORGOT TO PUT MONICA ON THE LIST, I OWN ALL HER ALBUMS.

@CHRISTEL. YEAH YOU MADE A LOT OF SENCE. EVERYTHING YOU SAID IS THE TRUTH.

  122. YO I FORGOT RAVEN SYMONE ON THE LIST. I OWN TWO OF HER ALBUMS. ONE IS CALLED, “WITH A CHILD’S HEART ALBUM WHICH THAT SONG IS ORIGINALLY RECORDED BY MICHAEL JACKSON. SHE HAD A RAP ALBUM TOO, BUT THAT DON’T COUNT AS R&B.

  123. i was born n 86 so im still tyrna catch up on my anita baker al green ron isley etc im on point with my james brown tho haha. but the 90’s had the best r&b n my opinion, the reason being is you had soo many artist put out quality music there was no thug r&b artist out there like there is now. u had groups singing bak n the 90’s not groups doing the stanky leg haha. i know im going off topic but i dont think we shud give full blame on r&b artist for its down drop n the past years, i believe its mainly b/c of what kind of sound and feel the producer produce’s. n the 70’s 80’s 90’s was the true r&B and now its a hybrid r&b to where u have r&b artist singing over a club type beat and having rappers fill n the blanks im not knocking it but we need the state of r&b to make a come bak. i mean how many true r&b songs have you heard on the radio air waves??? this is to the all the lifers and the ocean boys, wuts up!

  124. THE 80’S PRODUCED MORE MEGA STARS LIKE MJ,JANET,WHITNEY,AND PRINCE. BUT THE 90’S HAD A AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF STARS AND SUPERSTARS THAT BROUGHT INCRDIBLE VOCALS AND SUBSTANCE TO THE TABLE, WITH A VARIETY OF STYLES. AS NAKITA SHOWED US WITH HER DAILY MANIFESTO, I DONT THINK ANY OTHER ERA CAN FUCK WITH THE 90’S IN SHEER AMOUNT OF HITS AND GREAT SONGS. SO I SAY 90’S WINS. THIS ERA HAS A FEW TALENTS LIKE, BEYONCE AND ALICIA KEYS BUT NOW MOTHAFUCKAS THAT CANT SING ARE ALL UP IN THE MIX, AND WHY ARE THERE NO NEW DOMINATING SOLO MALE ACTS OR GROUPS(MALE AND FEMALE).

  125. PERSONALLY I LIKE THE 80’S MUSIC MORE THAN THE 90’S MUSIC AND THAT REASON IS BECAUSE THE MUSIC WAS SO SOULFUL AND I COULD GO FOREVER ABOUT THE 80’S. THE SINGERS AND THE SONGWRITERS WERE SO AHEAD OF THEIR TIME AND I’M NOT SAYING THAT 90’S MUSIC WAS WACK WHICH IT WASN’T ITS JUST THAT 90’S WASN’T AS CONSERVATIVE AS THE 80’S GROUPS LIKE JODECI AND R.KELLY & THE PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT(BORN INTO THE 90’S) STARTEDTHAT CLASSIC 90’S BABY MAKING MUSIC.

  126. honestly, i would have to say both because all the artist from each era came with some hot fire foreal. its hard to decide because there was such great music from all the artist. but as we all know michael jackson is the greatest of all time and mostly every artist that has came on the scene after him has named him top of the list for their inspiration and motivation to music, so technically if i really had to chose it would have to be the 80’s R&B…but i truthfully love both eras.

  127. I’M GOING TO SAY…BOTH…BECAUSE IN THE 80’S IT WAS REALLY ABOUT LYRICS, INSTRUMENTS, VOCALS, SEX WAS SOLD, BUT IT WAS OPTIONAL…AND THERE WAS ROOM FOR EVERYONE, NOT JUST ONE PERSON DOMINATING THE LANE

90’S STILL ABOUT LYRICS, BUT A LITTLE MORE SEXUAL CONTENT…BUT STILL NOT TOO OVERBOARD. HIP HOP WAS AT IT GREATEST LEVEL, WE STILL EXPECTED SINGERS TO “SING”, EXPENSIVE ASS VIDEOS MADE YOU RUSH TO THE TELEVISION…LATE NIGHT HOLD UP AT THE RECORD STORE TO GET THE NEW HOT CD….SHIT WAS FUN BACK THEN!!! RUFF RYDERS WAS BANGIN, BAD BOY WAS BANGIN, ROCAFELLA(RIP)WAS BANGIN…BRANDY, MONICA, AND AALIYAH WAS HOLDIN’ IT DOWN….THERE WAS ROOM FOR EVERONE!!!

  128. In my opinion the 90’s was the best era of R&B music. In that era it was more about the music and making good quality music. Now people just wanna make the most money and they don’t have good records. In the 90’s you could pretty much buy any R&B record and listen to it from beginning to end with out skipping a song. Now it seems like you have to skip 3 and 4 songs at a time to find a good song.

  129. …the 80’s music made you feel good & the lyrics truly meant something. I am a HUGE Anita Baker fan…her music is beautiful!

  130. Although, I enjoy both eras. The one I have to go with is the 90’s era. The first r’n’b music I heard was from Jodeci and so many more. The music was just great to listen and I still listen to the 90’s music and trying to get my 90’s r’n’b collection back up. Today, some of those same artist don’t quite have it no more or either fell off but I’m still a fan of there music. JD you should now do one on 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s hip hop…just a thought. Have a nice day.

  131. The 90’s was definitely a great era for music. No one can deny that. New sounds were around like New Jack Swing which had a more hip hop feel to it. I love the New Jack Swing sound but somehow that morphed into some real rough hard R&B where it wasn’t about love and now we have…Birthday Sex. A lot of the artists of the past had class and sometimes I feel like artists today are afraid to be classy because that’s not what a lot of the kids want to hear (even though some of these artists are grown ass men). It doesn’t always have to be hood. There should be some balance. It’s okay to have some edge but let there be balance. Jodeci was able to balance that whole R&B thug image well without going overboard and it still seemed authentic (though I heard they were dressed like church boys when Puff first got them lol). I’ll be the first to admit that when I was in my teens in the 90’s, I wasn’t interested in seeing anyone my age singing in a suit, that didn’t appeal to me at the time. So, I was cool with all the music of the 90’s but still had an appreciation for the class of the past. But now as I get my grown woman on, it just seems like there is an imbalance. Where is our modern day Luther? There are some songs by DeBarge and Rick James that touch me on such a deep level because of the passion of the lyrics and the delivery of the song. That’s what I’m missing these days…

  132. For pure R&B the 80s have it. I heard Anita Baker last night on the radio and went to a totally different place lol.

I feel like R&B has been a lost art form as of late….R&B artists either mix too much hip hop in their sound or they are black pop artists.

I have to had it to Trey Songz though. He’s putting out good R&B music although the lyrics are a bit raunchy at times

  133. @SweetnessNLight I thought Ruben Studdard was going to be the modern day Luther but his ass came n went with the quickness. Same with Fantasia, Heather Headley, and Vivian Green…

  134. @AnitaLTL I know what you mean. I still think Fantasia has got something to work with…

  135. NOTICE NO ONE SAYS R&B TODAY IS ANY GOOD…..i think autotune is the absolute worst. It takes away from real talent. The only part of the 2000’s that was good was the beginnig. U have to throw Usher in that list from late 90s to early 00s. He is my favorite r&b artist. Ialso dont know what happened to the great R&B groups. Next JE NE so soo so many……and JD you used to come up with some great great stuff…..but everything now is garbage…..i was born in 89 but bring the 90s early 00s material back…..Everything after laffy taffy and all that other bullshit is garbage.

  136. Gurl I hope so. LOL

  137. you forgot JOE (563)…. he is RnB

  138. I think those shows like idol are really focused on TV ratings not turning out a large number of acts. The contracts they are getting for winning seems basic.

  139. I would have to say the 80’s music had more meaning, and the lyrics really said something. Those songs will always touch somebody no matter what age they are. Some of the 90’s music, had lyrics but was more sex based.

  140. The Luther, Anita and MJ era was the best and is what molded the 90’s. See i look at it like this, the 80’s we were learing about it, the 90’s we were doing it and now the 2k we are living it and now it’s time to past it along for the next generation to see what it is all about. Becuz Luther, Sade, Anita and Marvin got me alot of play back then and definitaly now. I put them on it’s going down. then mix a lil H-town, Jodeci, New Editition, The Old R.Kelly and boy 2 men it’s a freak show fo sho.

  141. For me, I was a late 80s baby so the late 80s R&B and specifically the 90s R&B did it for me. I loved MJ, JJ, Boys 2 Men, Jodeci, H-Town, Xscape, Prince, Teena Marie, R. Kelly, TLC, Silk, Next, New Edition, SWV, Mariah Carey (and her remixes), Sade, Ginuwine, Aaliyah…the list can go on, but these are some of the artists who influenced my younger years.

  142. oh yeah, definitely Toni Braxton, Faith Evan, and those 90s soundtracks (Nutty Professor, Boomerang..ect)

  143. HEY JD ANY ERA THAT INCLUDED R.KELLY I LOVED IT, BUT PASS THAT I WAS IN LOVE WITH THE 90’S ERA BECAUSE THAT WAS AROUND THE TIME I HAD A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING ON WHAT THE ARTIST SONG WAS SPEAKING ABOUT, AND PLUS IN THE 90’S IT WAS ALL ABOUT SEX…SEX…SEX, EVERYBODY WAS SINGING BABY MAKING MUSIC IN THE 90’S

  144. I’m going to get torn a new one for this but I don’t think Alicia Keys and Beyonce can sing. Though, Beyonce’s voice has grown since she first began. I purchased Alicia Keys first album after hearing “falling” thinking she would sound something like Tamia and I was pissed. Their songs grow on you because you hear them over and over.

  145. LOL @Minnie I like Alicia’s voice, but bey…I don’t see it. She sounds like a dying cat to me and I cain’t take it. LMFAO

  146. the late 80’s and the 90’s sold the most records..but i like soulful emotional-slow songs but in the 2000’s like alicia keys heather headly indie arie floetry and more NEO SOUL took over for a while until Usher ans Mariah cameback 05.. the best RNB writers is JD,Michael Cox,Babyface,Alicia Keys,Johnta,Rodney,Ne-yoManuel Seal, the twins of Jagged E,darrl simmons

  147. Whattup JD and Lifers I would have to say 80’s and 90’s were the best of my time so far because everybody went hard. When I say went hard I am saying you could put a tape and or cd in the player and go from track 1 to whatever without touching fast forward ya know what I’m saying. Just like Phatffat if giving the opportunity with the talent she and yourself were blessed with should really be a look that is needed in R&B or music in general at this time. Cause she can really sing and you what it is JD your business/production swag creates stars. Dondriah, Bowwow, Kris Kross, Da Brat, Xscape, Jagged Edge, you brought back Mariah Carey, Dem Franchise Boyz, and I dont care what nobody says Janets album was nice. Just to name a few.

  148. I love and TRULY appreciate all the oldies, but it’s just something about most 90’s artists that does it for me. You didn’t really hear too many that weren’t worthy of having a deal. Today that’s not the case

  149. o.k. I feel like the best time for music literally was back in the 90’s because artist were able to express themselves no matter how are what type of artist they were you were able to just be you. Now in this generation you see the same ol’ stuff on TV it can be different artist but it’s like it’s the same artist because they dont know how do be themselves are to express themselves in their own special way it’s like they are scared of what people might think if they are trynna be different……………AND I”M SICK OF IT!!!!!!!!

  150. The 80’s to me is one of the best eras simply because everyone had there own flavor and no one had the same sound………….. Also you can not have the 90’s or current music without the 80’s

  151. The 90’s all the way.. That boys to men n swv is my shit I also liked xscape.. The year 2000 n 2001 were full of good music usher, jagged edge, ashantii, tyrese , lil bow wow, nelly, n destiny’s child… They all had good music…

  152. Janet Jackson and Aaliyah, Macheal Jackson. JD, Janet Jackson and Macheal Jackson is king of pop and qeen of pop. you say something post that you and Janet are back together you are back together with Janet or not just say it JD. I don’t understand why you just clean up. if you and Janet are back together than put her in next living the life.

  153. Janet when I think of you, Rhythm Nation The Knonwledge. back cat

  154. Definitely have to go with the 70’s and 80’s. The music back then was just so full of soul and had meaning behind it. Artists nowadays only wanna make money so they make a bunch of songs about sex and think they have a great album. No sir! Music back in the day was about more than sex. It was about love, intimacy, connection, and different ways to express that love. I’m 21 and I rarely listen to today’s music. I love Usher though because he’s one of the few artists of today who actually makes sense with his music and expresses his real emotions in his songs.

  155. I’m going with the 90’s overall…You can’t deny the music back in the 80’s though it was all about making you feel good and having a message to it..most of the songs were about being in love and fighting for a cause..world peace and all that.

But the 90’s that was the best! it was about having fun! dancing and feeling good..too many to name but it was great!

  156. The 80’s was IT! I was a teen then and it was just a good time for me and the music was off the chain! JD we had all those artist u named and more!

  157. I listen to 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s and the point that it starts to screw up is when we hit the new millenium!

Old school R&B was awesome! now new school R&B sucks….don’t know where the talent has gone!

I was born in 1989 and i loved the 90’s music but from 2000 music, it just horrible now. it sucks bad! could hardly find a hit every year! I barely don’t listen to the radio nomore. Today’s music sucks seriously, I have to immite that.

Im new on here by the way. I’m Nakita’s friend and i’m a big fan of hers right now.

  158. What’s up J.D. I didn’t know you had your own blog, that’s what’s up!

I think that we have reach the point were music isn’t progressing.
We need a new sound, there is to much hip-hop around, I’m not against it, but it’s to much of the same flavor. There are still good musician out there that can escape of what I’m saying, but we need that in a massive way. Seriously, who wants to listen to the radio now days, they play the same crap everyday.

Nice playlist Nakita. I will diffently buy all the songs on itunes.

  159. I like 60’s R&B because my mom plays it all the time when i was young. I don’t know too much of the 90’s stuff, I wasn’t allowed to listen to certain music growing up.

  160. 80’s and 90’s r&b music is quality, todays music is garbage.

Here are the reasons why i hate today’s R&B music

    1. EVERY SINGLE SONG has the same idea of music i.e. There is always a single clap sound followed by a drum sound over and over even on the chorus Drum… clap.. drum… clap.. It just doesn’t sound all that great and it doesn’t catch my attention. New Jack Swing does the trick for me.

why cant today’s r&b have an acoustic R&B song too? Why does every song have to be a club track???

    2. Songs are always about the same thing…
Every Song is always written about love… yes i know R&B is for emotions.. but i havent heard of one about the death of a friend or someone angry at a friend which leads me to number 3

    3. I hate the artists.. because i often see these artist singing about a girl or a guy they love and how the will be together “forever” when next week they wrote pretty much the same song again meaning its about another girl or guy

So if anyone wants to prove me wrong and is not a 13 year old girl please do so!

im a 21 year old guy, i would want to hear from other 15/16 year old guys who listen to R&B and disagree

also if you agree thats nice too

  161. I LOVE 90’S R&B MUSIC, I NEVER HAVE ENOUGH OF IT.

  162. 80’s early 90’s was the best hands down that when music was the best r&b was the raining champ everybody wanted to be a singer or dancer

  163. 80’s and 90’s hands down. theres nothing left to be said. just think back and pick your favorite song or slow jam, nine times outta ten its was made in the 80’s or 90’s

  164. I would have to say the 60’s and the 90’s have birthed the most classics!! When u look at the artist and the sounds I like those eras.

    P.S.
Look at the respose to this question.. People really miss real R&B!!

  165. The 90’s were definatly the best!!!! R. Kelly changed the whole game!!!

Have you heard his new song “Religious”
He’s def. making a comeback!! the King of RnB is back!!

  166. JD I GOT A QUESTION FOR YOU AND KEEP IT ALL THE WAY REAL I KNOW YOU WILL… IN MY OPINION RIGHT NOW TREY SONGZ IS R&B DO YOU AGREE?

  167. 70’s with out a doubt and then the mid late 80’s/early 90’s. There was a quality and depth to the music that has not been matched since.

  168. It a lil hard to say because each era inspires the next.. I would have to say I enjoy some of the current R&B artist now. Lloyd, Trey Songz, Usher, Ginuwine, and a few other are some I look forward to hearing more from because they consistently are creative on different levels and put out music that you can vibe to on different occasions.

  169. I’m an 80s kid to the fullest. But I’m gonna always ride with 90s R&B. That music had a perfection to it.
In the 80s of course you have classics, but the 90s took it to another level. And the swag was at 100%
R&B sucks now. I hope people with your power JD can try and bring a change to the industry. But I’m really not sure if it’s gonna be a change within the industy or with the consumers. It seems like our tastes have “dumbed down”. We accept this crap and brainwash ourselves thinking its hot. smh
Do a test. Take the 10 R&B cd/or single from 1995 and put them up against the top R&B of 2009.
And lets see which one is better.
