I don’t think that entertainment is the most wanted job of this decade…it’s the money that is wanted. I think on the outside it seems that the entertainment business is the easiest way to get it. You really don’t need a degree…people feel if you have an ounce of talent and can sell yourself, they can make it.

Secondly, people don’t want to put in the work. I think people take the notion “it’s who you know” to the next level. I think people expect to skip so many level because they “know” someone instead of actually working in the “mailroom” and building a career. They don’t realize to make it to Ocean status that they must first become a water vapor…to a puddle…to a pond…to a lake…to a river and then hopefully to a Ocean. You get my analogy, right?!

I think, its the part about being seen and being known. Its the idea of how “good” or “better” life would be being apart of the “exclusive” society. I think people beast to be in VIP because in strange insecure way it makes them feel validated as a person. Many crave it yet at the same time don’t really understand in its entirety what comes along with it. They don’t ask themselves what have I done (in a hardworking manner) to deserve to be in VIP or “the lime light”.

As for the 2nd question,I personally don’t however I do believe that with some people being in the industry/E.B is their ideal job of the decade because in most cases they’re feeling like its the quickest way to become “rich”.. But in most cases some aren’t equipt to be in the industry because they lack the drive. They lack that desire to remain RELEVANT. They constantly forget that in the “business” (which applies in everyday life also) the results that you retrieve are a direct reflection of the work/effort that you put forth.

Like kandi said…its what they see…tv glorifies the life…make it seem like all y’all do is play wit expensive toys and go on expensive vacations….if they put surgeons on tv like tht, erybody would wanna b a surgeon…ppl dnt realize tht there r a lot more rich ppl who aren’t entertainers…the richest ppl in the world aren’t entertainers

Yes, the entertainment business is one of the most wanted jobs today because of the lifestyle that is presented to the masses and the fact it plays on our materialistic desires. Even with all the behind the scenes access (which society gets even more of today than before) people still see only what they want. I’m not even on your level, yet, but enjoying the journey but I feel you on the grind of the entertainment business but at the end of the day people are only going to see what they want.

Yh…I definetly agree with that. Majority of people these days want to be within the MUSIC INDUSTRY for all the WRONG reasons. Its not like back in the day, everyone has lost the love and passion of an entertainer to do what they wanna do.

Yeah it is the most wanted job because ppl will do anything to become famous. Most people do not see the hard work and all the things that comes with it. Some ppl will go on reality tv jus to become famous. Everyone wants that life so they can be rich and get anything that they want. Personally i do not want to become famous cuz i don’t want everyone knowin my bizness like c’mon son lol. Like drake say’s money and the cars…cars and the clothes….the hoes i just wanna be successful.

Seriously, Yeah I think entertainer is one of the most wanted job out there right now! That is because people see all the positive things…but not the negative ones. It is up to entertainers (like you) to bring the whole picture to the public face, not just the glamorous part.

What I want is the money! There are things you don’t have to worry about when you have the money like paying for your child education. Also, I want to make a difference in other people’s life (not that money is the only way to so)…but I would pass being in the light!
JD, I don’t think working hard (or getting up early) is a difference between all other people’s job and entertainer…My dad works every day (including weekends) near to 18hrs/day…because when he is not a the office he is still working home.

He showed me that by working hard you can make it everywhere. So that’s what I intend to do…Work hard and make it big in my own field (no need to be an entertainer)

I don’t think it’s the people that have an issue!! You don’t know what it’s like to want what you have. You’ve heard stories your father may have told you or what you’ve seen, but tell me JD before you go tossing nephews out the window……..how did you get where you got? A friend in the industry once told me….his 1st job in the business was to trash all the Cd’s that were given to him by the people at the event. Now my son is an aspiring singer, songwriter and producer……I have to pull myself off the ground to hand someone his work…not because you may not like it, but because of what I know you gone end up doing with it. I work very hard to help him in any way possible and it was the most discouraging but truthful thing I’ve ever been told………You guys in the industry are still trying to be relevant and I don’t believe you want to see anyone take your shine…no different than ordinary people like myself are trying to get a head in life. 🙂

oh, and about the vip. i dont know what you mean? i dont get in vip for anyones interest but myself. no offense, but fuck a jd, im just not trying to be in that mosh pit sometimes. so you pay the cost to be the boss for the night. invite some chicks up, and get it poppin. vip to me is that night you want to feel like a star, and you want to stay the fuck out the crowd. but i dont need it ALL the time. thats stupid, and would cost to much. now if they just gettin vip just to be around ya’ll and be like this and that, thats whatever. my only concern in vip is my 1 or 2 boys im there with, and every single female in the crowd, even the chubby, cute white girl. you mad! fuck vip. its all about standing on the tables at the hofbrauhaus in vegas with a 1 liter beer in hand, singing german shit that i dont know the words to. its just a big slur of nonsense.

I think that it is what everyone wants right now. I personally never wanted nor liked being the center of attention but thats hard to avoid being that I’m one of the top college djs in KY. If i’m not djing, I don’t like to be seen out cause everyone knows who I am and I can’t enjoy myself with out someone calling my name or asking for a favor.

Nothing really comes easy for any of us. I work very hard for my money and what I have never for getting were I came from and always giving back. I figure its not all play, play . i’m use to working two jobs promoting parties for my now ex boyfriend and take all the pictures from the party and have it up by the next morning before i gotta go to work.. i think i could handle it for sure i love music everything about it i wanna be a singer or something in the music industry. i’m very good at doing lots of stuff at one time… but i hate when people wanna be in the vip section and they don’t know how to act they don’t know what it takes i’m use to alot of attention me and my twin sister will go out and people just rush us like are famous i live in canada i don’t think it would happen the states but i get the life and i still would wanna be in light

I don’t know if everyone wants to be in the “light”. The real powerful people are not in the “light” as far as I see it. The artists are the puppets. There are a lot of people who don’t have talent who are in the business, but for whatever reason they are all over the place. Then there are a lot people who have talent who never make it for whatever reason. People see the glamorous life of artists and producers and think that it is like that 24/7 and for most of the time it is not–it is a job that has a lot of drawbacks–lack of privacy, false lawsuits, people all in your business like they know you, easy access to booty/future baby mamis/papis and drugs and such. Some people want the fame, some people want the fortune, some people just want to make the music. Some people do not respect musicians/artists’ careers like they do a doctor or a billionaire computer geek. A lot of insecure people are in the “light”.

Alot of people think it’s fast and easy money but they don’t know it’s hard work, alot of stress and damn near no freedom.

Now as far as the LIGHT…..People always want what they think is better than, the sh*t they got. The whole grass is always greener thing. But what they don’t understand is the grind MOST celebrities have to go through, b/c of BS reality tv – video vixens hype – ‘overnight’ sensations – and celebs that make it look too easy. The cars, clothes, vacay photos, girl action, guy action and definitely the $$$$ – make the light look nothing but FABULOUS. There needs to be more Behind the Music, Life After, and True Hollywood Story shows that go into the core of what it takes to make it. This generation was raised on How to be a Millionaire, The Fabulous Life of…, and Reality TV success. They think if life sucks then a touch of any shine gotta be better. VIP gives them the means to rub elbows wit stars, and nowadays that means you’re a ‘star’ too! If you’re in a picture with a celebrity 2day, you’re on TMZ, EXTRA, Inside Edition, and the local news by 2morrow. Its crazy out here and getting crazier daily.
Women are actually going to their homegirl’s house now to pickup some a**! They stopped going over her house to get their hair done or to gossip, and now they’re getting DIY butt implants done. As far as being in the VIP, that’s all about trying to be fly for the ladies.. Being seen in the VIP gives the impression that you have money or status, both of which can help you get ladies much more easily.

Now as far as the music industry being the most wanted job… it’s like being the neighborhood dope boy. The music industry is the only industry where you have teenage millionaires. Not in sports, law, medicine, or any other legal profession can you get rich with no formal training or education. Young folks see musicians their own age living the life and they want to be like them. I am not saying that the music industry is an easy field, but if all you see is videos and concerts where everybody is having a ball, you don’t know about all the work on the back end…. and folks don’t realize that only 1 in 50 million folks make any money in the industry without decades of hard work behind them.

Nobody ever sees all the work and struggle put in behind the scenes for people to get to the perceived level of success they have attained.

Well me personally I would take the money and forget the fame..I like having anonymity..I wanna be able to go where I want to go freely..the industry is a business just like any other business and at one time in my life I had the opportunity to c how it worked first hand..I used to do pr and for me it just seemed like a party atmosphere most of the time and days that work could go on forever..alot of celebs saw the parties and stuff as more of a networking tool and many seemed bored with that type of lifestyle..money affords things tho including VIP shoot I feel like we all can be important ppl as long as u can pay to be there..it’s a big facade and it contributes to ppls narcism..I don’t care how much money a person has I treat a person who has two dollars the same way I would someone who has two million.. They can also have a story about how they hung out with JD, LOL. Yeah taking pics and the constant bug of fans is possible if you are a celebrity. But with fame comes admirers and haters. Money, Talent, Power and respect is what you possess. and everyone wants it. That’s GOD’S GIFT. And to those who work a 9 to 5; a celebrities life seems like the best and fastest way of achieving success. Hence the VIP life style is a quick 3 or 4 hours of what its like to be well off. In short; Public figures set a standard for what the public see as well off. What the public don’t know is its just as hard to be and stay a well off celebrity, when the truth is your also human.

I hear you, and understand your frustration. But things are also deeper than you can see. You cant forget that God is involved.

You may feel like you have what it takes. You may think that you need a dance record. But the truth is you need to make some noise.

When I say make noise I mean go out and begin booking shows. 7 to 15 shows a month. Meet with promoters see how you can be apart of there crew. Hustle. You need a following. I don’t mean a 100 people who like your music. how about 2000 a show. You need people who will spend there last dollar on you. You don’t need to sell out who you are as a person to get the attention from a Label. But you must give them a reason to invest in you.

I have listened to your music. Ok,Good effort. But you need more vocal training at least 10 hours a week for about 12 months. second you need to go to songwriting workshops to strengthen your writing. Take some extra classes at your local community college. Also purchase any and every book you can find on writing songs. Also search for local talent who are striving to succeed like poets,songwriter,producers,and DJ’s. After you do all of that, now you need to record in a professional sound and recording studio. These things are so key to becoming what you believe you want to be.

It may sound like alot or expensive. But look at it like this;If you aren’t willing to do the work or invest in yourself, why would a recording label? Invest 10k in yourself You need a budget to be successful. If that means that you work a extra job at Burger king to make a extra 1,000.00 a month’ If you did the math that’s 12,000.00 a year that you could have invested in your own album.

After you did your best God will show you favor, not because you saved up the money, but because you did your part; in perfecting his gift to the world, You.

So In steps
1. Save money
2. Compose a business plan and Budget
3. Vocal Training
4. Work on song writing
5. Seek a strong team of drivin people(Writers,producers,etc)
6. Professional Pictures
7. Work on building a following (This will give you bargaining power for paid gigs also)
8. Seek after club promoters and owners

These are all the steps you need to get the attention you desire as an artist. Take yourselves serious. Look at yourself as a product, then think of how you can get people to buy you. Why would they want to buy you? Be confident in your self and delivery on your bars or lines (You are telling a story). And have fun when recording.

I think that people still want to be that popular kid that everybody knows. The strange part is you can never be who you really are, you have to live up to other people expectation of you. It is soo sad to see some of these stars just wanting to eat lunch with friends and here comes a camera in their face, you never go to the store with your hair standing on the top of your head like us regular people do. I WAS WATCHING SHANICE WILSON SINGING TO BEYONCE – IF I WERE A BOY ON YOUTUBE. FOR SOME REASON, NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T KNOW SHE WAS AN R&B ARTIST IN THE LATE 80/EARLY 90’S. SHANICE CAME OUT BEFORE MARIAH YOU KNOW. BUT ANYWAYS, I WAS WATCHING HER, AND I THOUGH SHE DID REALLY WELL UNTIL SHE DID THE HIGH NOTE WHICH WAS KINDA HORRIBLE. I TRY TO EXPERIMENT WITH MY VOICE. MOST OF MY SONGS ON MY MYSPACE PROFILE IS ALL FOR THE A&R’S TO HERE, AND FOR THE LABELS TO HEAR SINCE THAT’S WHAT THEY LOOKING FOR. THEY NOT LOOKING FOR REAL SINGERS, THEY LOOKING FOR PEOPLE THAT CAN DO TODAY’S MUSIC AND THAT’S WHY I DID MY MUSIC LIKE THAT.

WHEN I SING, I SING WITH PASSION, I SING WITH A LOT OF SOUL, AND I SING WITH A LOT OF PAIN. THAT’S THE ARTIST I WANNA BE, NOT A HIPHOP MIX WITH R&B ARTIST. I DON’T WANNA KEEP USING AUTOTUNES ON MY VOICE, WELL THAT’S WHAT EVERYONE IS DOING TO GET THEIR DEMOS OUT THERE.

there is no need to explain yourself. You were 9;that was a while ago, time is gone. You have speech problems? that is something you might need to work on asap. Get with a speech therapist and take some courses top help you with that. Go and find someone who cant help perfect your singing and follow those steps I left you. You must do all of these things. Or you will be 50 years old with this same story. Go after your dreams. But do it correctly.

Jeremiah cant sing you say? So what? He graduated high school at 16. He went to Columbia University for engineering. If this don’t work out, he has a plan b. When Def Jam signed him they looked at him as someone who is taking his life serious. He was booking shows,He spoke well at interviews, and even better he had a following. Why wouldn’t they invest in him?

OK y’all. most of y’all have dogged her out. I think that’s enough now. Your not impressed with her music. Maybe she will think about what you all have said. Maybe that will encourage her to get some help to be better her voice and music. Or she can use this as a crutch and continue life with these same arguments. Why does everyone want to be a recording artist? I’m not complaining Artist pay my mortgage. I just cant figure why everyone thinks its easy to be an artist. Like going to college for 4 years is so hard. Its like everyone thinks being a Rapper or a singer is the same as being a Doctor or an investment banker or even a Dentist. There are other jobs that can guarantee yourself the same income or more.

If you are a new artist you looking to make 10 to 15% of your net value.

So if you went gold (The market has changed this isn’t easy nor common anymore, especially for new artists)

500,000 records sold
And lets say the label gets 9.00 per CD after they pay the retailers and or distribution fees they make

(500,000 x 9)= 4,500,000 net value for your CD
if you are a new artist you get roughly 10% (450,000)
But lets not forget the label gave you an advancement of 1 million dollars
out of that 1 million you had to pay for the recording, mixing, mastering, songwriting, Producers, Lawyers, managers etc.

I say that to say now your in debt to the label $550,000 in the red (Negative)
You made no money. I hope you budgeted your project and save yourself some cash. I hope you didnt buy that home, or that car.

Shit I hope you sell 3 times platinum. Now your making some money.

The truth about being a artist is your constantly under a microscope, you have problems like everyone else. Money inst how you pictured it. You can be a fairly successful artist for 5 to 10 years if you have merchandise and touring. But as an investment baker or a doctor you have a career of 40+ years. at 250,000 to the moon. Go to college who do you think they hire to market your album, who do you think they get to write your songs, engineer your music, plan your shows, conduct meetings, and compose that contract. Who made the bulk of the money you worked so hard for. Yes those 10 to 50 people worked on selling your CD.

I think some people just want the attention. To be seen with the “whos who” of the entertainment business to make themselves look better/bigger than who they really are. Not realizing they haven’t put in enough work or laid that foundation to seize their spot amongst those who have.
