Real Talk 4 U,Rap Game (Ep. 5 Review)

It’s half way though the competition and things are starting to heat up. I can definitely see that everyone is starting to bring their A-game.

This week was all about collaborating. Jermaine split the rappers into two groups and had them write and perform a song for, both, him and some local high schoolers at a pep rally. Not only did they have to collaborate with this song, he also gave the parents/managers the opportunity to assist in creating the song. I knew from the start that that was going to cause drama, but I was more than happy to watch it all unravel.

I won’t tell you who was in which group, but I will tell you what I thought about each group’s performances and chemistry.

From the moment Group 1 was announced, I knew that the whole group was a ticking time bomb. A couple of the people in the group don’t get along, so I knew it was only a matter of time before their egos got the best of them. Group 2 was okay. I saw them as the underdogs, so I knew that they would have much drama. I was worried about one member in that group, but that person behaved, so everything was smooth sailing, mostly.

As I said earlier, first both groups had to perform for Jermaine, his friend, Bryan Michael-Cox, and his assistant. Overall, I thought both groups did a good job. Of course, there were a couple minor (or major) things that each group needed to fix, but, besides that, they all did okay. My main focus was on the pep rally performance. I was anxious to see how they would do.

When they arrived at the high school, Jermaine had one of the school’s students waiting to give them a tour of the school. Now, this wasn’t just some random student. This student is a hot, new rapper in the hip hop industry. After the introduction and tour, they  got the opportunity to pick his brain about what is was like to be a successful rapper who is still in high school. They got some good advice and from there it was time for that pep rally performance.

I won’t say much about what happened, but I will say that I was shocked by each performance. Things didn’t go the way I thought they would, but I was pleasantly surprised and kind of proud of a couple of the kids.

Remember when I said that drama was going to unfold between one group earlier in this post? Well, I was right. Two of the managers got into it and Jermaine had to step in and punish them for not being able to behave as they should. The drama was ridiculous and I think Jermaine did the right thing. I hope they learned their lesson because if not they will definitely make it harder for their kids to break into the industry.

This was a good episode. I liked seeing the kids perform in front of a live audience. It was good to see how the crowd received them and to see how they interacted with a live audience of that size (900 students). I thought they did a good job, but it’s clear that there are still some things that they need to learn. They have the perfect teacher, so I hope they’re paying attention.

The Rap Game airs on Fridays at 10 p.m. on Lifetime.
