Valerie L. Gamache
Was born an only child in New York, and spent her formative years in the foster care system from humble beginnings after her teenage mother and grandmother grappled with giving her away for adoption at birth. She pursued life with a lot of hard work and passion. It is Valerie ‘s dedication to the relief of the suffering of others, combined with her undeniable survivor story that is so inspirational. Valerie L. Gamache has always been at the forefront of humanitarian causes since childhood, so it’s no surprise that her career and personal plights have combined to form a great arrangement of business with a purpose.
While supporting her attendance at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California, Valerie L. Gamache was known as THE campus’s community activist even after suffering physically debilitating injuries in 1990. At her graduation in 1992, Occidental College named her the 1st recipient of the Shirley Ward Humanitarian Award for her work establishing the Volunteer Programs Center at Oxy, the year Dr. Maya Angelou gave the commencement. In fact, the award was erected specifically to honor Gamache’s dedication and work around the highly prestigious school known for its student organized sit-ins against the global crime of Apartheid in South Africa in the late 80s; for her work in the surrounding inner city communities of Los Angeles; and her work with student community activism in the nation. Oxy was one of the first colleges Mandela visited after he was freed. Over the years, the program has grown a Center for Community Based Learning http://departments.oxy.edu/registrar/catalog/ccbl.html.
Edward James Olmos presented Gamache the City of Los Angeles Citizen Award that same year for her outstanding work in the desperate communities, commending her for “ serving proudly in numerous community organizations and dedicating herself to bettering the lives and being a source or pride and inspiration to all the citizens of Los Angeles“. She was praised especially for her work with the homeless on “Skid Row”, and for serving weekly meals, and for her food & clothing drive program with Pasadena’s Union Station shelter. As a Volunteer Coordinator, efforts to involve students to erect and work with other programs resulted in the launch of one of the first Pediatric Aids Volunteer Programs (college-based) at the inception of fear and misunderstanding of people living with HIV and AIDs; a much needed tutoring literacy after school program, in the surrounding public schools in a predominantly Latino area known for high drop out rates; and finally, Upward Bound, whose primary goal is to assist students who come from low income background and are 1st generation college bound applicants to enroll in and graduate from post-secondary programs of education.
Valerie L. Gamache has organized charitable events in various cities, such as Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Ann Arbor, and especially New York City. During the summer of 1990, Gamache worked as a part of the Outreach Department for national non-profit organization, COOL, Campus Outreach Opportunity League, where she helped to develop and implement the $750,000 Kellogg funded program called Into The Streets Leadership and Community Service Program. In 1991, she was elected Co-Chair of BGALA student group at Occidental creating visibility events such as the 1st Heritage of Pride Awareness Week with such guests as Essex Hemphill and Jenny Livingston showing her acclaimed documentary film, “Paris Is Burning”. Empowering student groups, creating understanding by engaging administration and faculty involvement, as well as founding a scholarship for students cut off from parental financial assistance due to the opposition to their child COMING OUT. Her reputation and voice is undoubtedly vigorous in fighting for Human and Equal Rights!
After graduation from Occidental College, she moved back to New York City in ‘90s where she organized such events as Empire State Pride Agenda’s Vote and Dance Party Benefit at The Roxy during the 1992 Presidential Campaign supporting former President Bill Clinton, as well as their Night of 100 Parties the following year raising over $700,000, resulting in their largest fundraiser. Ms. Valerie L. Gamache then dedicated herself for the next three years, helping underprivileged children in the toughest neighborhoods in New York City boroughs. She held two concurrent positions: during the day she was a caseworker and court advocate for abused and neglected foster children; and during the night, as a Supervisor/Counselor for street kids 17-21 at a transitional living program in Greenwich and the East Village, some runaway or from the teen shelter system, others aged out of the foster system. She quickly became known as the organizer with assets, bringing non-profit organizations such as Make-A Wish Foundation or Paul Newman’s Hole-In-The-Woods Ranch to supplement the services to the children she helped in a “system” which severely lacked resources.
In 1996, Gamache become a fulltime mentor tutor to then 7-year old Monika Sowell as well as sponsored her dance classes at Alvin Ailey’s Jr Division Ailey II and taught her how to play the guitar. Gamache presented Monika’s incredible success story to VH1 Save The Music for their “Music Education=Brain Power” campaign http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.channel&channelID=90069824 Monika was featured in the DVD recorded fundraiser event at The White House held by former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Former President Bill Clinton; as well as the Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross DIVAs tributes concerts. Learning to play the guitar and performing in front of her peers, ultimately helped Monika with her self- esteem issues due to a hand deformity from birth as well as some instability from her home environment. More importantly, it encouraged her unique creativity, love for music and dance, as well as gave her the much-needed encouragement to follow her dreams especially when she was encouraged by Ms. Janet Jackson in a meet & greet during her All For You tour.
