    YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS …..

I see alot of yall rap niggas hollering that ”I dont want/need a record deal, I can go independent and keep all my money, blah blah blah”…Half of yall just repeating some shit u heard on hip-hop documentary, the other half just really know in your heart you will never get a record deal so that’s your cop out…a very small portion of you actually KNOW how the independent game works and have the resource and skills required to be successful taking that route. First thing is, this is what I hear from rap niggas the most ”Record Labels are raping niggas, keeping all their money, niggas goin platinum and still broke, blah blah blah”….so let me get this right, YOU the artist walk into my office (the record label), and present me with some music and ask me to make YOU some money, because your the hottest unsigned nigga, and your music is the savior of my company. YOU the artist don’t have NO MONEY, NO CONSIDERABLE FOLLOWING / FAN BASE, NO PREVIOUS IN-STORE SALES, NO IMPRESSIVE NUMBER OF SPINS ON RADIO IN THE COUNTRY, matter fact you don’t even own the tracks you made these hot songs to, so me (the company) has to pay for that too. So basicly all you bring to the table is some RAPS. You want me the company, to pay for you to get recorded, mixed, mastered, pay your travel fees for you to go around the country promoting non-stop, pay for a team to travel with you, pay for all your music videos, vlogs, buy out all your tracks from producers who now wanna charge 10 times more because they know your signed now, and your broke ass didn’t have money to buy out the exclusive rights before hand, only a couple leases here n there. I have to pay for your ward drobe, and PR personnel to manage branding you to a large audience because you don’t know how to NOT look like a clown in public. I have to spend 10’s of thousands of dollars quarterly getting your record added to FM playlists around the country, because the only plays you could manage on your own were internet radio stations that do not report to Mediabase or Soundscan. I have to spend 10’s of thousands quarterly on getting your music promoted online on all the top sites and blogs until you get hot enough to release an album, and by the time that happens shit you will be a million dollars in debt before we even make $1.00 off you, and you could still flop then and we take a total loss. Now it’s time to drop your album and we have to cut a deal with our distributor for the hard copies of your album. your album is priced at $9.99, you sold 70,000 copies , that’s $699,300.00 made off your album sales, we shipped out 1 million copies of your album, it cost us that much just get your albums manufactured, the artwork, booklets, copied, etc. Lets not even get started on the posters n shit we got made and paid people to hang them up all over every city you went too. Your album sales have peaked, fans don’t like you enough to buy your merch, no big endorsements are coming your way because your a new artist and tho your hot, your not LIL WAYNE kinda hot. So how are we supposed to get our money back first off, and then turn a profit on our investment now? This is why artists get 360 deals now, because these scenarios are too frequent, and are in fact expected in hip-hop now. There was a time when you could take that big loss on the first album and recover on the other albums your bound too by contract, and spend less money on promo each go round, but now a days the internet has made the fans too accessible, everything is moving too fast, new artists are popping out weekly, just as fast as they start to like you they forget you, so you gotta keep dropping cash into promo campaigns to keep your momentum fresh. So the question is not why would artist fuck with a record label, its why would a record label fuck with an artist? We complain about these wack niggas getting signed, but its because these wack niggas dont require the same budget, they already did the hard part on their own, its a small, quick, and easy flip for a label. Single deal, 360 deal, drop that maufucka….NEXT! – @HunitStackz410

Been telling niggas this same shit for a while, I know 2 groups right now that live in my area that turned down 360 deals and had no leverage or anything significant they were bringing to the table. They are wishing they took that deal now because they didn’t get another chance at all. Niggas are working in diners and shit. It’s all about your worth when your approached about a deal, If your numbers give you the opportunity to bargain and they prove that you really a movement that will continue moving regardless than yeah that deal is definitely not for you. If your an artist that hasn’t done shit but make a few good songs and your just buzzin and they step to you then you are in what i call your 360 deal phase.

I argue with niggas for hours about Macklemore…they have some fantasy of achieving his success with no financial backing, and no matter how much evidence i point out, niggas refuse to see the light. Niggas completely disregard the fact that Macklemore won some contest money which helped launch the Macklemore we know today

360 deals are deep bruh. I don’t got a problem with anything except how they’ve become so common in Hip-Hop when they don’t need to be. Long story short these corporations NEVER knew how to sell Black music so they either got behind an already buzzing act(s) i.e. NWA/Ruthless, Dr. Dre/DeathRow, No Limit, Cash Money, Ruff Ryders etc or they built an artist i.e. Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Fabolous Lil Romeo, Nelly, Bow Wow (not saying some of those artists aren’t nice but they had no true independent foundation before they got deals) etc. and throw HELLA money into the acts hoping something sticks. About 2004 shit started going really bad because the labels were throwing the same money into promo & marketing but due to digital piracy they weren’t making the same amount of profits as before. Instead of scaling back operations and just taking a grass roots approach to find the solution to the problem the majors started to just retrieve their losses from the artist via 360 deals while using their massive wealth to sue the Napsters of the world hoping to just shut digital music down and return to normal. We all know that shit didn’t work out well for anybody except Apple who simply found a way to legalize the growing digital trend by signing licensing agreements. The labels have now scaled budgets waaay back but now that these MFs have gotten use to making all this money off of Rappers they don’t wanna just do away with the 360 deals so they use it as a standard new artist deals/leverage points i.e. ”Most artist’s sign a 360 but the percentages will decrease and eventually disappear after you sold X amount of records”. They still don’t have the permanent staff to get their artists endorsements, movie roles, clothing lines etc but want MFs to sign a 360. They still throw too much money away due to the fact they still don’t know how to pinpoint the specific tools needed to reach each act’s audience AND they don’t have the staff to justify doing 360 deals but still use them. Rap is the biggest source of 360 deals because we were the first genre/culture where damn near every act would flex their entrepreneurial muscles becoming richer outside of rap (we’re still #1 at doing that) and most niggas are just happy to get on so they sign w/ a ”machine”. This is long story short too bruh I left out hella shit cuz I’m tired of trying to think chronologically and I’m tired of typing too. Lol.

Also Macklemore got on due to investors not winning money from a contest. His biggest investor slash supporter is Peter Schwartz who is a high powered booking agent for one of the biggest if not THEE biggest indie booking agency The Agency. Peter packed his bags and moved all the way from NY to Seattle to make sure that Macklemore became a star.

LOL, right. MFs out here gettin blinded by the smoke and mirrors. I believe I know the interview you’re talking about Hunit but we both know any non million dollar contest money woulda been ran through quick AF when you’re doing it the way they were which wasn’t a stack and flip campaign (selling CD’s, merch & doing shows out the back of the trunk) it was an all out spend to win campaign (give away as much as possible in order to build a fanbase and name/brand recognition). Peter Schwartz and a couple other private investors were the bank for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis but it don’t stop the fact they were grindin hard.

                  What city you in Hunit?

It all depends on what your looking for and what your goal is. There are niggas out there making 10k a month making music and selling it online and they are comfortable with watching their growth. Some guys aren’t interested in being a super star, they don’t want all the touring, major contracts and extras. Their just comfortable with making 100k or better a year from the crib.
