As a man that has been responsible for starting the careers of rappers such as Da Brat and Bow Wow, along with revitalizing the careers of artists like Mariah Carey, it is safe to say that Jermaine Dupri knows what he’s doing as it relates to music.

Once leading the pack in Hip-Hop with So So Def Records, Dupri is now looking to reignite the fire and get the ball rolling once again with a new upcoming act by the name of Jola.

Not the average backpack rapper or the self-proclaimed gangster, Jola somewhat takes a page out of Asher Roth’s book as he is a rapper that just wants to have fun and isn’t trying to be anything but what he is.

The rapper recently dropped the video for “Living The Life”

Hailing from the Suburbs of Dayton, Ohio, Jola is not from the same cloth as most other artists.  While most will say they grew up listening and getting their influence from Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, he openly admits that artists like John Mayer, Coldplay and Lil Wayne were his influence.

Looking to keep himself separated from the norm, the newcomer looks to introduce his new movement known as “I Rep the Trunk”, which he has no problem in explaining.

“On one end of the car you have the hood, on the opposite you have the trunk”, he states “I’m not from the hood, so I rep the trunk”, and with the memorable and anthem-like chorus of “She Say”, Jola will have everyone singing “Yall can have the hood, I rep the trunk!”

Those looking for some of his background, check no further than his mixtape “I Went To Private School” which was released back in November.

In the hands of Durpi, who knows where the career of Jola could go, but the track record of the producer doesn’t lie, so things can only be looking up for his new artist.

  4. Hey, this Jola guy is cool or what not. But what happened to your other new artist Yung-C. I remember hearing he was So So Def’s new artist from a friend. Now he’s a good pick to your So So Def roster and so is Jola even though I never heard his music. I just love Yung-C’s record “She The Truth” that is going to be the best of 2010 I listen to it at least 5 times a day.

P.S But great job on your picks so far.

  5. OMG Jermaine Dupri I love you! You like so amazing and you are like a veteran when it comes to the industry. I listening to all kinds of music and I never heard of Yung-C or Jola. 8. I got jola’s mix tape back in like December. I still rock that shit till this day. His next single should be “Get em” That’s a classic hit with a banger! I’m definitely looking forward to his album. I know you hear that probably a billion times a day but this is the Trunk Movement. It’s time for a new era in the hip hop game and I believe JD can lead the way with Jola, Real Talk.

  9. Congratulations Jola!

  10. “Reviving So So Def” ? hmm i didnt know so so def had fell off or needed “reviving”. especially since its one of the few labels with steady success. Talented writers would get more respect from me if they didnt feel the need to use mis-leading headlines or punch lines to get people to read their shit.

  11. I love this picture of u & as previously you’ve always be the man!!! Stay true cause, nothing else will do!!! Congrats to u & jola, lookin for the release date!!!

  12. “Reviving” was certainly the wrong choice of word…but coming from a Hip hop site, I guess there are referring to SoSo Def in a hip hop/ rap context.
JD/ SoSo Def has been affiliated with more R&B in the last 5 years or more, than it has hip hop.
Mimi, Usher, Monica, Janet, Trey, MJB, etc. and recently; Dondria, B.Hines, Johnta.

Now to Jola. I am one of those people who are glad you signed him. I for one, is tired of all this I am from/ or rep the ‘hood’ ish! I like that he represents something new. Being that we are both private school products, helps me favour him even more.

  13. like i said when i seen his video im team jola all day!

  14. His mixtape can be found on Datpiff.com just search “private school” on that website

  15. Thanks to everyone who supported our private school mixtape! Shoutouts to jola let’s go!

  16. Jola or as I know him Brandon IS from an affluent suburb of Dayton. However, he didn’t go to private school, he went to Vandalia-Butler schools. So his mixtape title is a lie.

  17. JD man I say this shit on YouTube and found the mixtape and this dude is fresh I put this cat up there with wale now can’t wait to get more of that trunk shit and oh yea tell donria when she come Cali I wanna hit that shit bad ass fuck jk but I’m Cali and I rep the trunk cause I can relate with this cat middle America not all black folks from the hood yo.

  18. iREP THE TRUNK MOVEMENT!

“SHE SAY” is a great record by JOLA, and as you can see it got the attention of one of the most popular PROducers in the music industry, Jermaine Dupri and that’s SO SO DEF, real talk! What this kid has to offer this generation and the music industry after this single flourishes is true talent and longevity. All listeners will respect JOLA’s music, swagg and work ethic for many years to come. (Dayton, Ohio)

  19. TRUNK LIFE BABY!!!!!!!!!! JOLA ALREADY KNOWS WHAT TO DO HE JUST NEEDS A MIC, A STAGE AND A CROWD! ITS TIME TO PUT DAYTON, OH ON THE MAP! LETS GET IT!

  20. You think J0LA’s on point check this shit out: http://www.myspace.com/blacklightproductions1 i SHiNE ! 4l9-5l6-2382

  21. Man his mixtape is so refreshing! I love that he is not coming out talking about selling dope, shit he ain’t got like mansions. Cars and selling a dream that being hood is the way of life. Yes, most of that shit is rented for the video. If you haven’t seen the video he’s keeping it real and one more Is it just me or is CLAYTON a Hater !? You can have that hood shit I rep the trunk!

  22. As a close family member of “Jola” or as we call him “bran” he did go to private school Clayton… get your facts str8 before you go postin’ shit, making yourself look stupid. If you really knew him you’d know his background but u prolly just like the other people out here tryin to make a name for yourself instead of simply giving somebody props on a job well done… Brandon earned his spot in the rap game… it was never handed to him, he wanted it and he took that shit! You can’t get signed by JD on some ol’ bullshit. He’s a business man with a plan and he made a executive move in selecting Jola. p.s. hatin’ is so played out homie, this is 2010, keep it movin’

  23. Trunk Nation Baby!!!!!!! Jola bruh keep doin what you do, The trunk is headed to the top. You already know its all luv and respect this way we like fam. Rock these shows and keep makin hits bruh. LETS GET IT!!!!!!! Also look out for Colb and R Legacy records……….. We the only movement movin!!!

  24. Jola Is About To Take Ovah The Game With This Movement….IF U Have Thugs From The Hood Sayin They Rep The Trunk…Then What Else Do U Need To Prove? Lol, like…really??…LEGGGGOOOOO JD!!

  25. shouts out to @carsonbyrdotcom he put me on his “artist” as he sed @JOLATHETRUNKBOI last summer after he directed the video to “she say”. im proud of yall keep working #iREPTHETRUNK
