LIKE FOR INSTANCE THE SHOW THEY HAD LAST NIGHT COULD AND SHOULD BE A WORLD WIDE TOUR BUT THERE’S NO PROMOTERS IN THE GAME FROM THAT ERA ANY MORE. THIS IS THE PART OF HIP-HOP I DON’T UNDERSTAND, WHERE DID EVERYBODY GO AND WHY?? YALL THINK I KNOW BECAUSE I MADE MY WAY IN BUT I’M NOT FROM NY I WAS IN ATLANTA LOOKING IN THE WINDOW JUST LIKE YALL. Well JD what role do you play in all this? How have you tried to keep the old school alive. I mean I know you play it when you DJ (well shit I dont know I never been to one of your parties) but when you bring out new artists you bring out people who have this new school, bullshit broke down sound. The pioneers need to keep themselves out there. But how if hop hop takes a turn left and everyone follows. There are no leaders. I mean Kanye is one of the few, but everyone else is just doing what the labels tell them to do to make sales. The old school dudes dont leave they get pushed out. Aint nobody promoting KRS1 or Big Daddy Kane. Shit Rev Run was on tour WITH KID ROCK, that should tell you something. Pioneerd need to fight harder to stay relevant and I dont mean doing the stanky leg or no bullshit like that. By making good music that is about SOMETHING. Its fine to party but damn.

I think that people left hip-hop and so-called abandoned ship becuz 1) they thought they past the torch and it would something that was sustainable or 2) Hip-hop heads wouldnt let the older cats stay around. they’ve done this by not supporting albums (sale wise). Think about it, how does it look 2 see an old black guy STILL WEARING BAGGY PANTS talking about rhyming. 3) maybe they were jus in the biz for the money!!! Look at all the fake rappers who really only care about money. They havent read a book in their life or have said anything mind boggling in their rhymes….I think I might of answered this question to my full understanding

Maybe a lot of the “ol school” people are NOT RESPECTED by the “new school” and when u have “already made money” u feel like it’s not worth the headache. Also it seems as if WE(meaning our generation JD)have not DEMANDED OF THIS NEXT GENERATION ANY TYPE OF RESPECT. Think Bow “humbled” himself after understanding that HE needed you to help guide the SHIP that you created! But it took a MINUTE, for the others, that almost NEVER happen! If a handful of them would’ve banded together (financially) and built their owner”ship” the y would have a seat at the table where major decision are made in terms of where the music will go (creatively)…I hate to say but them niggas dropped the ball…they cashed in (individually) and bounced, never to look back and think about the next generation. I think they come and leave because they don’t have a passion for music anymore. They don’t create music and perform because they love it…they just wanna get rich quick…I don’t think they realize the importance of music and how it changes lives…Its an art!!! People don’t get to know them either…you would think that with the technology thats available that we would know more about the artists…but we don’t. We don’t feel a connection to them…hence the low album sales and high single sales. They arent creating cohesive albums..they putting an album of singles out…WTF…there are a few…but artists(if they can be called that) aren’t being as creative nor as innovative as they used to. Also, we don’t have many places we can watch music videos anymore on TV…I used to spend HOURS watching BET and MTV…u remember Planet Rocks?…lol….I don’t think there is any respect for the art anymore…we don’t demand quality…and we don’t get it.
I think that the legends of hip hop shouldn’t depend on promoters. They know who they are willing to work with and they need to get together and work on getting back in the game. Even if all they do are Hip Hop Legend Tours. They will make money because there is an audience out there for them. An artist must be willing to grow and change. They don’t have to change their music, but they definitely have to be willing to change their methods. KRS1 is in my city often, but he plays at a venue that doesn’t advertise on urban radio, or newpaper. Just like you are on Youtube, Twitter, and you have a blog, these artisit need to use some of the same outlets as a means of keeping their fanbase updated.

In my opinion, this is a mirror for a lot of things in the Hip Hop Culture. The theme a lot of times seems to be “Get yours and Get Out.” Which is also a characteristic of Black culture. We are caught up in getting ours. There also isn’t a reverence for the pioneers. if you look in other cultures; for example, Rolling Stones concert would sell out in a minute (and I mean arenas not no club), Bob Dylan would also, as would julio Iglesias. But how fast would a Big Daddy Kane concert sell out, or Rakim, or even LL? We focus more on outdoing each other than uplifting.
Somehow during the evolution of hiphop the founders were left behind. There were no Venues for them to perform & there still isn’t. No one was looking at the foundation of Hip Hop all the industry focuses on is the surface & who is moving units now. They don’t care about what you did, it’s about what you’re doing.
You can have an Ojay’s concert, Frankie beverly and Maze etc, can tour every year. Why can’t Big daddy Kane, Rakim, Doug E fresh, Heavy D, ect do the same thing. Cats put there money in Bentlys, diamonds & industry trappings, they should invest in the founders of this music. If they did that everyone could break bread.
I miss the days of the Budwiser superfest, where I could see all my favorites on one stage. Now tours are wack. You have the headliner and 1 new artist and ticket prices starting at $65 for bad seats. I use to stand outside madison Square all day waiting to get my tickets, now i won’t even log on to ticketmaster and bother going.
I don’t now what happened maybe greed , frustration with industry BS, who knows. It’s isn’t one thing that happened that you can put your finger on. I miss the fun & good music the 80′s & early 90′s were the shit.
Instead of questioning the state of hip-hop, look at your own stuff you’ve produced in the past 2-4 years, and ask yourself why haven’t they gone to the top? Maybe a new formula, along with the old stuff? Ionos..
Where did everybody go? For the most part, those people that were behind the artist came in it for the money and once the checks slowed down then they decided that it is time for a different hustle.
That is totally on point. But, this is not just happening with hip-hop; it is happening everywhere. From schools to churches , from good music to parenting. There is something wrong with society when we can create something awesome, but don’t feel the need to continue and sustain what we created. I have to think that it may be a lack of loyalty to the idea/craft, after you got what you wanted (whether it be money, the guy, the girl, etc.) you became satisfied and felt as if your job was done; instead of looking to moving/growing the idea/craft to the next level.
I think it has to do with ownership and the current state of Hip Hop.
The old school artist don’t have labels to keep pushing there own agenda so they try to survive off that old money and when that’s gone they try to live off that old success.
The suit in the office is the one who keeps the cycle moving and they don’t respect Hip Hop like the fans.
I doubt you will see the check writers backing Doug or biz on a new album with enough marketing dollars for these new cats to pay attention.
Hip Hop has changed and some of these old school artist just didn’t change with it so there role is to supply us with that classic music when its called for.
Plus in the black community you have so much hate that a man can only take for so long so once you get your money you get out just like the drug came.
White folks can stay in their professions longer because they share more of a mutual respect for each other and when your rich and white you are looked up to.
When your black and rich you are hated because the ones under you do not understand that real money comes from hard work and struggle and not buying a ticket in the rap lottery.
Look at Q DA kid,this dude has been grinding for a long time from before Franchise to now but people think you just found him sitting somewhere and asked him if he wants to rap.
At the end of the day Hip Hop does not respect its elders for them to keep there place in the game.
i think hiphop was never taken seriously n always when a Artist grow fast or come out on top it was only cause they already got a fanbase so this is my opinion… I’m mean the major labels, never were interested on what the artist wants or needs or even think about to build on him (Artist) but only on making quick money with out to think whats coming next and about music quality that perhaps is not so comercial but if a major label or music director, whatever, take time to promote, to teach the artist, etc it will comercial to and better… but only few hand full of artist com out on top.
HIP HOP got a lot of support and lovers in the underground scene but they are all only listeners or underground artists
Its a shame too because A artist like Krs One will put on a show better then 99.9% of these new dudes in the game.

On the real I’m just so elated at the fact that someone whose made it in the game actually speaks on topics that are relevant to Hip Hop. 2nd I think you hit it on the nail the music is so manipulated by #’s, quotas, and “it gotta be a hit.” That most artist loose themselves, Jayz spoke on this on his black album dvd where rappers are afraid to be rappers because of these machines that incite an artist into doing a record that they don’t really have fun with. All in all I gotta say So So Def as it is right now is definitely having fun you can see that you all are “Living the Life” and enjoying every minute of it. Here we go!! When Lincoln set the slaves free did they redistribute the land? Think about that for a moment. People have been passing down land (wealth) for over 300 years, most of us are starting from all most nothing. If you are in GA look up the history of Stone Mountain and the family that owned it. That’s right one family owned it. Most people that are black and rich are first generation wealthy. That means they started out with either nothing or very modest means. Once again who taught them?
Some things are not for sale but in our community everything is for sale, and that’s the problem. When Bob Johnson sold BET, I almost cried that day, because I knew how much harder it would be for me. If you remember BET had Uncut, I had a song on Uncut called ASS DANCE by The Firemen (the video is on youtube) they would be play that video all the time giving me a chance, as soon as Bob sold BET, Uncut was dropped. It was not dropped because of lack of viewers, because a lot of people watched that show, it was dropped because the owners of the company wanted it off.
The leaders of Hip Hop didn’t see making a brand to be passed down for generations to come, they took the check and left. Where did the Ford name come from? People started making cars back in the 1800′s and their family name is still around, who will get credit for Hip Hop 100 years from now? I use to get mad at Russell Summons” way of doing business. He will find a business, build it up and then Cash out. He is still doing this to this day, but at least he is still in the business. He has a rapper named Short Dawg who I met in the studio a few months ago, the point is he has not turned his back to the game.
The bottom line is that everything can not be for sale; somethings are more important then money and should be kept. My parents never really believed in my music career, so when JD released 1472 in the old record store by Lenox, everybody was trying to talk to him, I stood outside talked to his father the whole time. When I looked on the back of Bow Wow’s CD and saw the name Michael Mauldin, I smiled because dude is still in the game. 100 years from now will So So Def still be around or will it be a distant memory?

Black people are the epitome of a throwaway society. We buy something, wear it for one minute then throw it away. Same with our music. Our singers have to go overseas to be appreciated because their music is no longer in rotation on the radio here. We are over-indulgent to a fault. We rush to keep up with the latest fads and let others dictate the value of everything for us. White folks hold on to everything until it comes back into style again, including their clothes and music.
I think there comes a time in everyone’s life, when they’re just ready to move on. However, if it’s something that you truly love, then you’re never really able to let it go. Look how many times Jordan came outta retirement. It’s the responsibilty of the new generation to pay there respects, buts its the responsibilty of the old schoolers to stay active in the game. JD it just hit me. I was sittin here watching the WWE Hall of Fame and I understand now why hip hop is the way it is. Vince McMahon has the same mentality that slave owners had. You start with one set of workers and keep them and work them til they break, knowing that they will have children to carry on that work when they cant. Hip hop was not built like that. I honestly don’t feel like everyone just gives up and leaves. I think a lot of people are forced out of relevance by trends. I feel like trends are a gift and a curse of the game because they get you on but if you depend on them, your high can only last as long as the day the trend began. A lot of older artist can’t continue to stand because with the start of a new trend is the death of a prior and “society” stands by the trend and shelve the classics.

Now, JD I feel you more than you know as I lead by example as well. I’m from NY (raised since age 1) as I am & have always been around the authenticity of Hip Hop all around the tri-state area even more Long Island. Example – EPMD, Biz Markie, Craig Mack, Das Efx, Keith Murray, De La Soul, Prince Paul, & the list continues all resided in Long Island as it’s a small community especially if were all in entertainment. So at a young age I’ve been coach able to there presence & tutelage. Now, I have just finished wrapping up a Big Daddy Kane Canadian tour in Toronto on the 26th, Montreal 27th, & Ottawa 28th so when I read your blog it confirms that agents such as myself is doing something correct about bringing “The Father’s of Hip Hip/ Rap” to teach the younger kids who tend to follow & breed the culture of ours. As before the BDK mini-tour I brought in Naughty By Nature. So, you can get the drift. I can’t even begin to mention how much of a success the BDK show was. It mixed from all over: races to age groups. Literally there were 18-50+ men & women in attendance who left there kids w/ there babysitters & lived life. Like I even got photo’s of fans bringing there original records out for Kane to sign. Me & Skoob were chopping it up in the dressing room about topics like this, as I appreciate your daily postings. There is definitely a fan base out there for these type of shows..i saw a show last yr with Mc hammer..Mc Lyte ..Whodini..Big Daddy Kane..very nice show..I think that the old school ppl dont have the money to put up to promote themselves ..many of these artists were not privy to prime contracts and signing for alot of money. So they dont have the resources!
I’m learning this very lesson in school right now. Our teachers do not accept the way technology has changed and how we must change with it. Same thing with our parents and grand parents, my mom just started to figure out how to text. These hip hop pioneers seemed as if they resisted change. When myspace and facebook and all of these outlets became available to the public, many did not take the time to invest in understanding the change. We can not deny change; change is inevitable growth is optional. No one took the time to grow as the hip hop game grew and as the world changed around us. Jd on many a days I read your quotes and become inspired to never give up on my dreams and more importantly myself but somewhere along the way the game caused these rappers to give up. That’s the message the someone perpetuated to them. The first person who made it ok to rap about all this money, and clothes, and not talk about what was real in these streets. What happen to the Marvin Gaye, “Whats going on” type rappers? The average nigha not balling, yes we need to dream and see that we can reach that level but what about keeping it real. We in a recession but rappers still talking bout money??? Where are the rappers who still have the foot in the streets and connecting to the average person, the same person you want to buy your cd. We lost that in our generation and there are few, kayne, t.i., nas, common, who still speak potently about world events and real issues but there aren’t many. You continue to ask what’s wrong with hip hop? Why not show your fanbase, the lifers ,real mc’s, let them kick it with us too. Include them in songs and in the recording process. I want to know how you are going to help fix hip hop. I heard you must be the change you seek to see in the world. So what do you resolve to do about the game?

It’s hard for independent labels like mine to get on BET or MTV because all of those shows that you watch on TV have been paid for. The major labels pay from the top.. In other words, the top executive at Sony Records, has a relationship with the top executive at BET. The Sony exec with break bread with the BET exec or the Clear Channel exec for TV and radio play. That is why we have a play list and every station across the country sounds the same. That’s why Maria Carey’s people got in trouble about that TV awhile back,,,look it up.
