Your own private Pixar
Forget about the funny glasses: Fuji’s just-announced FinePix Real 3D W1 point-and-shoot camera lets you shoot stills and video with the 3-D look sans specs. The secret? Two lenses, each with its own perspective and focal point, snap separate images, which are then combined digitally to—ostensibly—blow your freaking mind. There’s an optional eight-inch LCD viewer for gazing upon your handiwork, or you can have stills processed and printed by Fuji’s special labs. (Pricing for that service is, as you’d expect, TBD.) If you get bored—or overstimulated—with the 3-D business, the camera can also shoot old-fashioned 2-D with different effects in each lens at the same time (one black-and-white landscape, say, and the other a high-saturation color close-up). You’ll have to deal with a form factor sculpted to imitate a smiley face, though, which makes us wonder: Who decreed that 3-D necessitates kitsch?
