People in the industry are cutting back, but it is being done discretely. The game has so many people in competition that pride isn’t allowing them show that they’re affected by the economy. Everyone has to have the biggest house, the newest car, or nicest video. Speaking of videos, they’re pretty plain nowadays. The green screen has definitely become an effective tool versus really traveling to these places spending money.
Also, I agree that promotion has decreased with labels and artist. Budgets permitting artist to do major promoting and marketing are obsolete. Simply put, we shouldn’t be duped by our favorite artist and producers because at the end of the day they’re hurting too. They’re what I call “Rich-Broke.”
As far as young America goes, we’re aware of the bad economy, but we’re not money conscious. “The Recession” is way deeper than Jeezy’s album. For example, we’ll go out and buy the new AIR Yeezy’s trying to imitate someone who is rich, but who is also affected by the economy.
It’s time to stop frontin’ people because the economy is affecting us poor and middle class folk the most.

As a nation we’re not prepared for what’s to come. We beat the first recession so I’m positive we can get this one. And although we have an Obama, we don’t have an FDR. Young people want to be like rappers, and I just realized that promotion isn’t the way it used to be, BUT the looks they give off in their videos and the lyrics they rap make people percieve another thought. It’s like a parent should be the most influential person in their child’s life, but honestly we all know for most people it’s the celebrities because they have the life that almost everyone dreams of. Simply put, people aren’t going to pay attention to the recession until it hits them and that’s the real truth. It aint it, but its life. You can’t force anybody to realize that life changes and make them face reality. The best thing you can do is warn the people, because there isn’t anything left you can do to prevent what is unevitable.
I know I should cut back, and honestly I’ll do that, get a job, and then a summer job. Every little bit helps.

I think for the entertainment industry this recession may turn out to be a good thing… the audience of the last 5 or so years have not been able to tell the difference between a talented / creative entertainer and an average entertainer who’s had a lot of money spent on them!
I just got done watching the Busta T-Pain video and was thinking there’s not many artists you can just put in front of a white background, turn on the camera and say ‘ACTION’ that can keep my attention for 4 ½ minutes….

I only see a handful of new artists being smart about this money situation…The rest of them are gonna be stuck on trying to keep that rapper’s “image” with the fast cars, faster women, and jewelry galore cause in most peoples eyes thats when you know you made it…And the only time anybody is gonna pay attention is when they start to lose a significant amount of money…Just like Cafe Dupri, if it wasn’t costing you more to keep it open maybe it will still be in business…

America as a whole, young and old, has been living off of credit for the past 20 years or so and it’s hard to get yourself out of that state of thinking it’s ok to get something that you can’t afford now and pay for it later.Savings accounts have been replaced with credit cards so how can you save on something that you technically don’t have anyway?????
I put my credit cards away because I know that the temptation will always be there to get a lil something extra if I have them on me rather than just spending what I actually have but a lot of people aren’t changing to live like that.
The biggest problem with the recession to begin with was the fukn media…They were the ones at the very start bullshittin about how fucked up things COULD get in the future. Causing investor confidence to fade, ppl back out of their shares real quick and take the money they got, causing mass companies to close down due to such a mass fall. Yeah its the banks fault for lending out mass loans to ppl who coulnt repay them, and other major world banks for being tied in with the guys who were throwing money around… among other things too. But if it wasnt for the Media scaring ppl and making a mountain out of a mole hill, so to speak… Perhaps the world wouldnt be so fuked up atm, atleast maybe not wall street anyway…the place where everyone turns their heads when it comes to financial status around the world.

Young America is not reacting to the recession in a responsible way. I havent even addressed myself. I am still spending like I usually do. But now, since my boss is talking about cuts to my division, I starting to pay a little more attention. The problem for most young African Americans, is the fact that we are competing with one another. We are always trying to outshine one another so that we can feel better about ourselves. Until we can stop worry about what the next man does or wears, we are going to continue down the path of not being financially stable when situations like this arises. I am starting not to spend as much money on clothes and apply that money to a savings so that if and when I lose my job I am ready to a least pay for necessities. I just remain faithful that God will keep providing for me as he always has.
In regards to the rappers, I still dont think they get it….seriously. Yeah, they are spending less money on the videos but you still see them out spending like they have a big supply of money at home. The music industry has been laxed with their marketing strategies anyway but I can definitely see a change in the way they are marketing artists now in the recession. You see that myspace, facebook and Youtube are being used to hit consumers and leaking tracks are easy methods now.

I’m not a rich person but an everyday working person in the healthcare field and even my field which in the past has been one of the most stable is feeling the pinch!..REAL TALK PPL ARE ACTUALLY KEEPING THEIR LOVED ONES AT HOME OR NOT SEEKING MEDICAL ATTENTION..mainly because they either lost their jobs along with their healthcare benefits and cant afford it..alot of older ppl are going thru their stashaway money for their golden years for basic living expenses..Do u know that a hospital can actually take an older persons house and resell it if that persons health benefits run out and they cant afford their bill but still need longterm healthcare? Alot of seniors when they get older are putting their homes in the names of their children so that the house wont be used to pay off their healthcare bill..I used to be able to work allllllll the OT i wanted and now there isnt a lot there..OUR CENSUS and many hospitals census’s are low!! I feel that i need to start saving more ..i try to do what i can for my sis and help her with her kids cuz its so hard out here…BUT everyone needs to realize its real…America is fragile right now and nothing is guaranteed..

Yeah, I was just thinking about what you said about the promoting. The music industry is definitely feeling it. I didn’t know Jadakiss’s album was coming out either until I saw Diddy’s blog. Also, I didn’t see much promotion with Mim’s album also. It’s gonna get worst before it gets better.
Yeah, there’s definately not a lot of promotion, but a lot of celebrities arn’t necesarily cutting back either. I mean, everytime I see them, their outfit is more than 1000 dollars, that’s not cutting back. I would rather save money to promote a CD then going out to these promotions wearing 348903840398 dollars worth of stuff.

I dont think young america has any clue of what is really about to happen. I am talking about the demographic of 12yrs old -25yrs old. They have such a disconnect from real situations. They just live in this fantasy world of videos, movies and dumb Shidd. It was different with the demo that came up in the 70s and 80s when they were very active and aware in all facets of their life. When it comes to most shidd today, folks just brush it to the side or ignore it. People have heard it being bad but most don’t know what bad is. There is still a disconnect, like “that aint me dog or it ain’t gonna happen to me.” Parents of the younger generation don’t really explain politics and economics to their kids so their kids don’t show interest. Parents have always sheltered them from the bad thoughts because our parents had recently went thru everything before us so in their way of giving us a better life they didn’t instill certain elements that made them strong and succeed without fail no matter how bad times were. Now you have a few people that are exempt but the majority is trumping the minority now. The bad thing about it, is that artist are still talking about popping champagne, arab money, etc…bragging about all this money instead maybe being a little more suttle and letting people know they are in tuned with what is going on. It is I don’t care mentality, most artists ” are like whatever, I get mine and I really don’t care about the rest.” When you look at mainstream media, you don’t see anyone telling you how to approach or deal with this crisis at hand. You see them telling you to go out and be just like them buy rims, buy out the bar etc…in the 80s there were so many groups that voiced public outcry that people actually changed their way of thinking during those times. Public Enemy, KRS-1, Dead Preseidents, Queen Latifah and more…I think mainstream media needs to take note and focus some well deserved energy to the younger generation because they truly do not get it. Especially when you turn on the tv and they see athletes getting crazy money, music artists getting crazy money, the government creating crazy money…they don’t see a recession…….

I totally agree with you on the cut backs. I own a media company that buys all of the tv/radio ads spots and sell them to the record labels and other entertainment companies and all of my platinum selling artists have had budget cuts. I will say, a few of my major clients have had to dip into their own pocket to assist with their own project, which is essentially an investment in their business. My advice is to be conservative and frugal with your money. I’ve made hourly/salary cuts for my staff. 1st quarter was very slow, 2nd quarter seems to be a lot better and I have faith!
Fans need to realize that rappers make videos to “look” like they have it all, the girls, cars, money and more but in reality many, not all but many don’t have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out! I’m fortunate to be able to pay my daughters 47K per year tuition (although I just asked her to take a loan out for her senior year in August so that we can keep our cash/money market phat), my personal assts salary, my office space in historical building in the Bronx AND thank God I own 2 homes-mortgage FREE and no loans out on those properties. We also do not have any car payments since we own our Audi & Cadillac outright! So my advice to all is be wise, study successful people and conserve your money and stack up your pantry! God Bless!
@ solo da kidd I have to say my oldest child gets it but my son is still asking for Xbox 360 games??? wtf??? My friends say the same thing the older kids that are getting ready for college that we know, they get it but the kids that don’t see their parents struggling they don’t get it. My friends and I are not rich but we know many rich people here in Colorado so we see the cute backs and that means less work for us because we do events. Fortunately for me I also do corporate events so I have been able to maintain. But my kids are like well if we are at the mall getting new shoes than let’s hit this store and that store and I’m like hey you are getting new shoes because you need them and that’s all you get. Explaining why we have to save to my younger children is like talking to a wall. But I think for people who are not rich we have always lived that way, having to save and sacrifice for our children and our families. But there have definitely been major cut backs in my house because you just never know. I work with a lot of charity organizations for kids and I always take my kids to the events so they can see what we do for kids that don’t have it like they do and my younger kids still don’t get it and I keep telling them by the grace of GOD that is not you but it easily could be. I mean all you can do is keep trying to educate them but if they don’t see mom and dad struggling they are not going to understand why they can’t spend mom and dad’s money. That is for the younger kids, now if you are 16-25 you should get it by now and if you don’t we as a society are doing something seriously wrong!

K let me ansa ur Q– here’s the deal with humans in general, most of us pay attention and are aware of what is going on the world, from famines in this country, to AIDS pandemics in that country and the recessions affecting all over…etc. We know all the bad things that happen to people daily, but the lot of us usually don’t get too concerned about it until it hits close to home….that’s just reality–regular people and celebrities included..For e.g. Lance Armstrong didn’t care 1 iota about cancer until he got cancer.
That’s just how it goes, and I think until the recession personally touches the household of young, middle age, old people whoeva (lose a job, house gets repossessed cuz u cant pay the mortgage, no $$ for college…etc) they gonna more than likely keep going bout their everyday lives. Granted the smart one’s will or have started cutting back and conserving more here and there. The fact of the matter is though, is that if the prices of everything in the economy is going up and you are still making the same, less, or zero $$ because you got let go, you will feel the sting of the recession in one form or another no matter how well you prepare for it.
Just gotta hang in there the best you cant, rich, not so rich and poor…hopefully we make it through, if not ehhh…earth gotta come to an end some day, end all this suffering once and for all.
