Answer from Grammy-winning Songwriter/Producer Manuel Seal Jr.

Recently, a question was submitted from an up-and-coming songwriter/producer:
“I would like to pursue a career as a songwriter, but I don’t know where to start as far as getting industry people to hear my songs. I am a musician, and I come up with melodies and lyrics…all from my home studio – doing the production myself. How do I get my songs exposed to music publishers, other artists, and other producers — so they might consider using my material?”

Answer from Grammy-winning Songwriter/Producer Manuel Seal Jr.

Start first by networking with local songwriters and other music people.  As far as the publishing aspect, that can begin with an inquiry letter to the particular publishers you’re interested in.  Those types of contact lists are available (see Musicpowers.com).  You can also “make friends” with others in the music business that have already established themselves in the industry.  Overall though, you have to get out there and cultivate relationships… to get heard.
To get to my company, as far as submitting material to me, it’s simple; “I don’t leave any stones unturned.”  You never know, the material submitted might be from the next Babyface or whatever.  So, when someone presents something to me, I listen to it.  I know that not everyone is that easy to submit material to though.  So, sometimes it can take an introduction or recommendation.  But, in general, you have to make yourself known through networking…and then sell yourself.
