Sports Illustrated lays off all staff photographers

Sports Illustrated, the legendary magazine that has brought sports photos to subscribers for decades, has laid off all its staff photographers, according to a report.

The National Press Photographers Association first reported the move, which affected the six staff photographers left at the magazine. The report cites a confirmation from Sports Illustrated director of photography, Brad Smith.

Entertainment Weekly. Reps from Time could not immediately be reached for comment.

The magazine has worked to adapt to changes that have hammered the industry’s advertising revenue and subscriber base. SI also recently redesigned its website and launched a daily fantasy sports operation. The photographers were part of broader layoffs at SI, according to a report from Capital New York.

Photographers have faced some of the deepest cuts, as newspapers have looked to trim budgets. From 2000 to 2012, almost half of all photographers and videographers have been let go, according to the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Other recent notable layoffs of photographers include the New York Times, which lost five photographers to buyouts. In May 2013, the Chicago Sun-Times laid off its entire photography staff.
