Lionsgate Not Renewing Tyler Perry Contract

Lionsgate has decided against renewing its first-look deal with writer and director Tyler Perry’s 34th Street Films, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Perry started in 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which focused on his popular Madea character. Although the deal won’t be renewed, Perry still has a few films already in production at the studio, including March 14’s The Single Moms Club and other Madea movies.

With Perry now a free agent, he will be allowed to negotiate with other studios in order to keep his Madea franchise, and other films, going into the future. Not many of his movies have been breakout box office successes, but they have all kept a modest budget, which helps them become consistently profitable.
