JUST A THOUGHT

ON SAT NIGHT I WENT AND CHECKED DRAKE OUT AT THE LOFT HERE IN ATL. I HEARD HIM ON THE RADIO TALKING EARLIER ABOUT HOW HE WAS WAITING TO DO HIS DEAL UNTIL HE DID EVERYTHING HE PLANNED TO DO WITH THE MIXTAPE. IT WAS SO REFRESHING TO HEAR A YOUNG NIGGA TALK LIKE THIS BECAUSE IT SHOWS HE WANTS A LONG CAREER AND SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO GET IT. A WELL THOUGHT OUT PLAN IS VERY IMPORTANT THESE DAYS SPECIALLY WHEN NONE OF THE LABELS KNOW HOW TO CREATE THERE OWN CONTENT. SO FOR HIM TO TAKE THAT STAND IS 2 STEPS IN A NEW DIRECTION. ANYWAY THE CROWD WAS SINGING ALL THE SONGS. HE WAS THEN JOINED BY SONGZ 00711 AND THEY PERFORMED “SUCCESSFUL” RIGHT BEFORE HE TORE IT DOWN WITH “YOUR THE BEST.” THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT HIM IS THAT ALL THE YOUNG KIDS ARE GOING APE SHIT OVER HIM BUT THE OLDER PEOPLE AIN’T REALLY HIP. DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE  25 AND OLDER DON’T DO MIXTAPES??

  1. I’m 26 and we checkin for dude. Heard some of the stuff him and Songz did awhile back but I’m from the 804 so Songz kinda helped introduce me to dude. He’s getting it done though.

  2. I do not think that true jd at least for me! Im 25 and although I not up on mixtapes heavy I do acknowledge them and if 1 comes thur that my homeboys bumpin like Young Chris or somebody else if it is aight I will defintely bump it. That Drake mixtape is the mad dope 4 real. When i heard lust 4 life i knew i was goin to be bumpin this mixtape. He made me look at mixtape differently 4 real! I cant wait tell his album comes out! Holla back JD! T

  3. i think the older guys hear there lil’ sis bumping drake and say he’s jimmy from
degrassi so they think he’s mad wack! lol that’s what my brother has said to me…
but he doesn’t know Drake [drizzy] lol has more then 1 bad ass mixtape! lol
he [my bro] wont even listen to drake cause he’s an actor turn rapper…
i think if they hear he’s rap’s before they see who he is, they will like
    drake and his mixtape…

    keep the peace*

  4. i been Tellin ppl about Drake for the longest.. Since B4 replacement girl..My Chick (well 1 of’em) is from Canada..Still Lives there during the summer…didnt even know who the hell drake was. I just sent her the link about a week ago..her and her roommate both didnt even know this nigga..WTF I just turned 27..and JD i have to say its not that the Grown dont do mixtapes i think its just that Some ppl are just Up on shit and others catch up to shit.. the Web makes shit SUPER easy to access but some ppl dont take advantage, My Uncle …No lie cant take the drake out of the CD player… real talk he 46 and this nigga will make sure his drake cd go in the crib wit him…successful is his fuckin ringtone 4 crying out loud… but I put him on..now would he know drake if it wasnt for me nahhh.. but im a internet head i take advantage.. now is it out there for my uncle to access, sure it is…but he dont give a damn about the internet.

  5. I have to agree with MyStiRyGUrL. I found out about Drake from my niece whose 16. She was like “Auntie he’s so cute and he’s from Degrassi” and I immediately thought, oh he must be wack then! lol But I checked him out on youtube with my niece and thought he wasn’t so bad after all…

  6. i really like drake at first i didn’t know who he was but i looked him up and he is a great artist he can sing and rap and it sounds good none of that bullshit great talent i hope to work work with him

  8. i had never heard of him til here and i saw him on joebuddentv. im over 25 and have NEVER purchased or listened to an entire mixtape. But i am waiting on the oceans one. Oh wait I take that back, before Kanye came out I heard his first mixtape. Other than that….not so much.

  9. NOPE YOU GOT ME… I NEVER HEARD OF THIS CAT!! SAD

  10. Drake was down here last friday for a concert. He tore it down. I thought i knew all the words until this group of white boys came in and they went ham. they knew everything! I love Drake and I think he is going to take the game over…he has the gangsters and the hip-sters. With the age of technology that we live in, there is soooo much information available and music falls into that category. You have regular radio plus XM radio now, so mixtapes arent like they used to be. I used to be excited to walk in NY City and grab the lastest music, but now mixtapes are kinda late lol (u get me) especailly now that the internet is soooo strong.

I noticed that older folks tend to listen to more radio and watch more tv than the younger folks, so since Drake just got on the radio with that Young Money song “Every Girl,” most people are jus getting introduced to him (older people). While us young folks damn near live on the net. My friends watch movies and tv on the internet. when we get older, there wont be any more tv or radio (in my opinion). there will jus be the internet….Its a gift and a curse.

Drake will catch on and people are gonna like him….I call him the male version of Laurn Hill. cuz he can rap and sing

-Ya Life is like a chess move, so make your next move your best move

  11. People keep forget to mention that dawg is from Canada that’s another big thing and why Drake is so different. Toronto Tdot, actually he reside in Missisauga samething tho! But drake is gonna be doing great things and he been grindin for a while!!! He is a smart dude for making sure everything is good with his deal but i think Young money would be a good place for him to be.

  12. I’m 25 and check for dude. Only heard of the song “replacement girl” with 0711 before “So Far Gone”. His mixtape plays like an album but probably would not have sold well because he was unknown. I have never heard of nor seen the show Degrassi so that also has no influence on whether or not his music is dope. The buzz dude has through this tour is on some grass roots barack obama shit! Every Hip Hop Blog is on this cat. And he obviously has the females with that singing shit. word to Jadakiss (The honies don’t lie they love it/And they cop for real trust me dogg the thugs will dub it)

  13. IM OLD AND STUCK IN MY WAYS LOL!…. BUT I WILL CHECK HIM OUT. I GIVE EVERYBODY A CHANCE IF THEY TALKIN BOUT SOMETHING.

  14. I DON’T LISTEN TO THE RADIO. ON THE WEST IT’S HARD TO GET PLAY IF YOUR NOT WEST WEST OR THE TOP BILLERS.

  15. Im from Bmore and drake got the hoods going crazy the girls like the single but niggaz like the fly shit he do on the these beats I think he gon be a great artist as long as he dont let wayne have em on that extra shit that he be on

  16. Young money would be a good place for him to be.Hell no what artist from young money came out we would never here his album if he signed to young money. be cool wit them niggaz but get your own money

  17. The teeny-boppers always pick up on these cats first. Pay attention to what they like. Hey may be the next hot kid.

  18. I don’t think that statement about the 25 and older is true because I am 26 and I was at the Drake concert and my brother who is older than I am, is the one who put me on to the whole Drake mixtape. Don’t get me wrong I knew who Drake was already due to his previous work with Trey (Replacement Girl) but I think if you aren’t into music or you just listen to mainstream music you are really out of the loop and miss out on a lot of things. I know a lot of people who know nothing about the Ocean’s and it has nothing to due with age it is about there level of music interest.

  19. I personally love Drake and I am in my late 20s. The thing is, I didn’t know anything about him until I heard his name from a younger friend. I do believe that many people my age are no longer looking for and buying the mixtapes. As you get older, your environment changes and you don’t really keep up as well with the undergroud music and mixtapes. Although I try to keep my ears open, I feel as though I may be missing alot of talent from people who are not being pushed by major labels. I play drake now all the time, but sadly and hoenstly I would of known nothing about him if it wans’t for speaking to one of my mentees. There must be a way for mixtapes to appeal to the older crowd…right now they are not doing a good job of reaching a diverse clientele.

  21. I know that dude that’s Aubrey Graham from Degrassi on the N. Now he is singing under the name Drake, more power to him. If he sings as well as he acts he should be good.

  22. Drake is getting a lot of attention from his latest mixtape but he has been known on Youtube and Myspace for 3 years now. Especially after he dropped Brand New. You mention he had a plan. Everybody knows Drake background as an actor. So he has the finances to take his time. Most kats are just trying to get out the hood.

Drake has always been a humble dude. He use to post people’s YT covers of Brand New on his Myspace just to show he appreciated the love. It’s videos with him talking to Youtubers on the grind because they had built a following online from scratch and he respected that. It’s one on he2fast channel. He hit up PriscillaRenea and she shouted him out in a video. This is how I heard about the guy 2 years ago.

I don’t think it’s a mixtape thing. I don’t think older people are as up on the Youtube/Myspace/Internet artists making a name for themselves. All you have to do is go back and look at the beginning of Living The Life with Dondria in the studio with JD. When people started posting video responses from all over the world for the Phatfffat or Dondria name thing. JD was like “This shit is crazy.” LOL!!

You got guys on Youtube right now selling out 2000 seats theaters from their Youtube page. They post a video saying show on this date. 24 hours later sold out.

  23. Well, I am over 25 and have heard of Drake because of work with Trey but do not know about his mixtape. I don’t think it’s an age thing. I think that if you were into mixtapes before 25 you would probably be into after. Maybe there is a time constraint, but if you are into that, it may continue. I was never into mixtapes so it doesn’t matter my age. And I find it funny that folks are saying people over 25 aren’t really on the net. What year do you think folks over 25 were born in. I mean saying 25 and older now is not the same as saying 25 and older back in ’95 (but that is a different subject, because I really get tired of clubs playing some Frankie Beverley but yelling 25 and older, lol).

Anyway, now that I have some free time, I will probably give his music a listen.

  24. I am a writer for nappyafro.com, well over 25, and I remember when I “broke” him to our readers. I don’t even know where I got wind of dude, but I did a little article on him and folks went crazy. We talk about dude on our site at least weekly. He’s one of the most refreshing guys in the business and is probably the most talented young cat coming up. I hear the Charles Hamilton’s and the Blu’s coming up, but Drake just seems to have and get it.

I really didn’t get into mixtapes because for a while, they were terrible. There was one point when they were all for sale and they all had the same 10 or 12 beats on them. It got really bad. Since Wayne has upped the game, I’m noticing a lot more effort going into mixtapes and a lot of the creativity and variety of the Golden Age coming back. I have all of Drakes albums and you can hear how he’s grown on each one.

  25. my daughter was playing him and my ear for good music caught it instantly/ i said who is dat then i didnt wait to post a comment on Jd blog about him. Plus i asked tre so you doing colabo’s with drake. Lil wayne and drake dats over the top. I like his style and the way he concept his material

  26. JD, I feel you homey. I’m 28. I tried to get my friends on to Drake over on Facebook. I linked Successful, Best I Ever Had, and Replacement Girl. And NOBODY checked it out. Nobody looked, or as far as I know even listened to a song. Its like if somebody isn’t physically playing the records for them, they aren’t checking for him. I don’t get it. I hope its not an age thing, and people are just too busy to take a listen. I figure people will figure it out eventually. We are just ahead of the curve.

  27. I’m 25 and older. I listen to mixtapes. I actually have Drake’s So Far mixtape. It’s refreshing. I’m a lover of music. I like rappers that have a different flow then everyone thats out. I first heard of Drake on concreteloop. They featured his song Girlfriend w/Trey Songz. I think my generation is into the Dope Boy Gangsta Street Life rappers that we sometimes miss the boat when it comes to someone like Drake. Who is a very talented rapper. We need something else, T.I. is gone for a year, Wayne is Rockin Out (Glad he is switching up), Kanye is on another level right now, Jeezy can’t hold it down all alone. Waiting on that Oceans mixtape. Is Nelly a part of Oceans?

  28. I’m 31 & I think he’s dope. It’s rare these days that a download gets more then one listen from me. I can set & listen to that mixtape over and over and not get tired of it. He makes good music.

  29. WELL IM OVER 25 AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHO HE IS LOL EXCEPT FOR WHAT I HAVE SEEN ON UR SITE AND A FEW OTHERS BUT I HAVE NOT HEARD HIS MUSIC

  30. Toronto in the house mofo… recognize and realize

  31. I’m 29 and the youngest in my krewe (my friends range in age from 30-39). Every one of us are rocking Drake. “So Far Gone” has literally shut down all mixtapes…its so diverse. Drake will be in the N.O. (my hometown & current city) this Saturday and I cannot wait to catch the show! He is refreshing and so humble. I like that about him. Dude is mad talented and the rest of the hip hop community needs to recognize.

  32. Oh yeah, JD, the song is called “BEST I EVER HAD” not “Your The Best” just fyi 🙂 It’s one of my fave tracks off of SFG.

  33. DRAKE IS THAT DEAL!!!! HE GON BE A STAR FOR AT LEAST TEN YEARS!!!!

  34. U KNOW I STAY WITH A MIX TAPE!! and i’m an OG! LOL 😉

  35. Isn’t that the guy from Degrassi, my little nieces love that show. Anyways I feel music is music whether it mixtapes or album.

  36. I don’t think its a set thing at 25 and older. Just older people are stuck in their ways on what they think is good music and don’t care to listen to up and coming acts. Drake is also very “internet” based and older cats don’t be on the blogs and myspace like that.

  37. I feel everybody on the age thing, but Drake’s style is what did not appeal to me. I’ve heard some of his stuff and it sounds like some mini-Kanye lyrics/vocals. Kanye raps and tries to sing and so does Drake. That style is already in existence and Kanye, though he cant sing has appealed to a massive audience on a tremendous scale. We were somewhat reluctant to accept another artist using autotune (Ron Brownz, P. Diddy, everybody) after T-Pain, but it grew on us, we’ll have to wait and see if he can adapt to the ever-changing industry.

  38. Us 25 and uppers do get down with mix tapes, but we have to have heard of the artist first, it’s harder for us to get exposure to new artist because we are set in our ways and we listen to what we like more so than the new kid on the block. I had never heard of Drake until I went to Weezy’s show back in March… But the next day I downloaded his mixedtape from his myspace page and it’s been in my rotation eversince. It’s nothing new younger kids are always more into the new artists and the older generations take heed of the best from the new school.

  39. It’s just like JD said on YouTube it’s about image, until people have heard of you the first reaction is gonna be ” here comes another wack ass rapper or singer. Once you prove yourself to be the truth word will spread like wildfire… Drake is a prime example. One day you have never heard of him, and the next day you have told 10 people about him… I have never seen so many people get behind a new artist before a major release. As long as his major release is as good as his mixed tapes he will be on top of the game…. But if the record label waters it down his hard work will have all been for nothing.

  40. Im 33 and I’m a hip hop junkie. My favorite old school groups are Nice & Smooth,Whodini, and A Tribe Called Quest. Thats love! I keep up with it all!!I live in Orlando and I have been rockin “u tha best” 4 months now. I knew i would cop his albun when it dropped! I like new music . I have 2 stay new and fresh with the music ,or else i will start 2 look like some of those old classmates that look like they are SIXTY and miserable. GOOD MUSIC IS POWERFUL!

  41. “I just wanna be successful!” OOOOOOOOOOOO! 🙂

  42. I’m 26 and I’m LOVIN dude..got all 3 mixtapes plus some other shit. I don’t check for Degrassi, never knew what it was before I did some research on where the hell this dude came from. Still have never seen an episode, but I’m feelin Drake and wish him all the best with his entertainment career. And I say entertainment, cause that’s truly what the homie is, an entertainer, no matter what the form.

  43. I am over 30 and I’ve been pretty much listening to Drake since early last year. Here in the T.O. people have been on him since his first mixtape. I joined the train late on his second mixtape. But its all about where you check for your music, if you depend on radio and TV then you miss out on a lot. I might be an older head but some of these new cats got me excited about hip-hop again, Lupe, Bobby Ray, Joell Ortiz and Blu. Then you got some of the dudes who have been grindin just finding their lanes, people like Budden, Royce, Saigon and Elzhi. Going back to Drake though, he aint the best emcee or the best singer but he’s got that combination of wit, charm and catchy hook writing ability to be a good entertainer. And if you listen close you’ll see that he leaves little gems for the listeners here and there and for the most part he is honest in his music.

  44. NAH HE JUST NOT THAT HOT TO ME. NOT TO HATE BUT TO HATE THOUGH….

  45. I don’t think that age range would be correct , its the 30 on up that don’t know anything about him. 16-29 know, that’s the young crowd not 25 and up.

  46. Also, no one should put out any rapper they have with Drake coming out because Drake is the future, the rest save your money on them.

  47. JD I always respect your comments & opinions and I feel you on what you said about mixtapes. I feel like a lot of the older cats are not up on some these new mixtape artist because mixtapes have became more digital now. I’m in the 25 and up crowd, and most of my homies are use to CDs. They don’t know how to download a mixtape from a hip hop website or blog. So the younger crowd is more hip to all the new technology. So their knowledge is more vast on some of these new artist.

  48. wow lol a lot of you guys are over 25… (not a bad thing)

but yeah i think it has a lot to do with the internet. he’s been out for a few years now and people are just hearing of him. im glad he’s doing his music thing HIS way and not jsut accepting the first offer that comes his way, he’s gonna have longevity in his career : )

  49. 1) j.d. please download his 1st 2 mixtapes they r sooo good!!!

    2) i feel like by now if you haven’t heard of drake thats not even a age thing thats just a test of if your really into hip-hop .. i mean because if ur a true hip-hop head your def. going to have heard of drake … {he’s on the radio, mtv, every blog site, every car lol} i mean what else does he have to do

    3) i seriously believe that no one has more hap for a 1st album than drake, & i would really want to see if anybody could come up w/ someone who has more hype!

  50. LOOOL!!! Well I neva knew tha bama b4 “Degrassi” I love that show, can’t fake. But its cool too see him make his transition. I saw him briefly with Flo-Rida he was cool. But I wasent really payn attention. But he was receeved by the crowd pretty well thoe. Good for him.

  51. I am really loving Drake, just got on him because all my New York and D.C. fam talking bout him non-stop. I was walking by Walters in downtown Atlanta and dude sold me that Drake.. I have been non stop listening to him daily everyday since. I did not even realize I had already been listening to him from the Lil Wayne mixtape The Weezy Effect.

I am 27 and got to admit I aint up on mixtapes as a female, but my guy friends around me usually put me on.

  52. YEah he going to be in the ATX tonight def going to check him out @ sprios…

  53. Well I’m 25 and up and loving Drake right now. I’ll definitely be in attendance at his Chicago HOB show…too excited. I think the mixtape deal with the 25 and up crowd is kinna hard to do. When you get to a certain age and u don’t have the time sit back, enjoy the roses, and browse the internet for new music instead of working and taking care of life’s businesses constantly, u lose out on the chance to discover new music. I can say when I was in my teens and maybe early 20’s, I could name any artist any song that came on the radio within 5 secs of it playing. I’ll definitely say my ex-husband who had a lil more time on his hands has put me up on music a whole lot more over the years…oh well…gotta find a new “put-on” now…lol…

  54. i think 25 is kinda young… but i mean the tape released online… so i guess if ur not on that wave… or on twitter following damn near every celeb in the industry (who tweeted abt it forever) then u missed it. and if u didnt hear replacement girl– think it was trey songz alone then find out it was some ninja named drake and go to his myspace… which was like what 2 ys ago… then u prob missed it too.

he has a line about people slow to catch on to his shit… too bad i cant think of it.

  55. yo jd when you gonna snatch up a artist from the eastcoast my dude check my page myspace/kstarks133 stay up homey

  56. Aubrey Drake Graham I’ve been on him since his 1st mixt-tape “Room for Improvement” the boy is so tight, I was nervous for him to go mainstream because people sell out sometimes, but I think he is a great edition to the rap game right now. I was shocked the boy from Degrassi was rappin better then most that are out right now… ATF all things fresh

  57. I’ve been hooked on Drake since he was “Jimmy” on “Degrassi” lol… For real though he does have some serious skills that people slept on for awhile since he’s been such a teeny bopper heartthrob for so long. I think he’s goin about it all the right way. Not many artists can be so humble and true to there craft. We he does sign a deal i know he’s gonna blow up.
