  1. I’LL KEEP IT SHORT & SIMPLE, COZ BLACK AMERICA IS STUCK UP..YEAH I SAID IT..GO TO A BLACK CLUB ALL THEY DO IS POST UP & TRY LOOK COOL(GUYS) CUTE(GIRLS)..GO TO A WHITE CLUB PEOPLE ARE CLUBBIN & HAVIN A GOOD TIME…….

  2. YO DATS WHTS UP LOL ALTHOUGH YU LOOK LIKE A HORSE JOCKEY YU STILL FLY HAHA
WHEN DA OCEANS MIXTAPE DROPPIN BRAH?

  3. I Agree 100% and Im so Glad you pointed this out…someone like yourself who has influence and has seen the world, maybe you can hip Black America into appreciating something different… a nice spot. Hood spots have their place, but something sexy & classy never goes out style

  4. I reside in Miami and truthfully we do have some of those same chill spots you speak of…More often than not it will be on more of a jazz/lounge tip but there’s also the spots with prolly 250 max capacity that’s just primarily young black professionals and those ‘in the know’ where you can relax, lounge, club it up and have a good time. Problem is the majority of those same spots reach a tipping point. Promoters wanna make money (you can’t be mad at that) venues change to larger areas and thus the rif-raf enter taking over and 3 months later that chill spot you used to go on any night from thur. – sun. where damn near nobody knew about starts to have radio promo and from then on you know the drill lol.

  5. JD your asking the same questions that I have been asking for the last couple of years. Where are these spots….black spots. I like to dance and get my club on with other professionals just like me, but its really not crackin like that in LA anymore, unless………..its a cool after hours house party!! Thats why I love going to Europe………Greece, Italy…..crackin!!!

  6. One problem is that a lot of clubs with an atmosphere like that don’t promote towards the black crowd. In fact some of those spots turn their nose up at black people…(e.g. finding something wrong with your attire, even if a white dude can walk in wearing chuck taylors and ripped jeans and you are wearing a button down and hard bottoms)

In DC I have found a couple spots like you describe that but they are usually a heavily mixed crowd (meaning mostly white, asian, latin, and a few black folks sprinkled in) but in general outside of DC many of those types of clubs are reluctant to let black folks have events at their lounges. The 25+ crowd in DC is really more based on lounges as opposed to ATL where clubs are king, so up here there are a good number of lounges where young black people socialize. Now my question is why is it that so few black folks open up nice spots like that? Once ATL gets one or two and they are packed out it will spread, and the night life in ATL will be changed drastically.

The 25+ crowd is ready for more grown and sexy type of venues… We do like to go to Insomnia and Central Station every now and then, but we also like to get fly ( or fressed as JD called it) sit back, drink and meet people in a nice atmosphere. If you build it they will come.

  7. Well Im In L.A and Theres A Spot just Like Dat Called LIFE With a Great Black Cook, great music, Lots Of Beutiful Women And you Dont Have To Pay. The Venue Is great For the Eye. But maybe things are like that Because Ppl are just not satisfied with a nice calm evening. Also Alotta ppl havent grown up and matured to that level, Thats the real reason aloota those events are considered GROWN and SEXY.

  8. I love your pants and boots. It’s this cool tropic explorer look.

  10. I AM NOT IN THE U.S NOR HAVE I EVER BEEN THERE(WUD LUV 2) BUT…FROM WAT I READ ON UR BLOG, SEE IN UR VIDS N OTHER BLOGS…I HAVE 3 POSSIBLE REASONS..
    1. IT SEEMS PPLE R SO STUCK IN THEIR STERIOTYPICAL WORLDS N THINK ONCE BLACK PPLE COME-VIOLENCE(SHOOTINGS, STABBINGS) WILL FOLLOW…
    2. ANOTHER REASON CUD BE DAT(LIKE 1 OF UR PAST TOPICS) BLACK PPLE R JUST STUCK IN DA PAST…BACK IN DA DAY IT WAS ABOUT CLUBBING N DAT IS A COMFY ZONE FOR THEM, NOW ITS ALL ABOUT LOUNGING N ITS NEW TERRITORY…MAYBE WITH TIME THEY WIL LOOSEN UP N JOIN DA LOUNGE CROWD.

    ITS SAD TO B HONEST…

  11. i live in LA now and you can find those place’s here but not for the black crowd. west hollywood or downtown hell every place in LA but we have to make our own spots and bring them to us sayin hey you guys with the money JD and others make the same clubs and show them we like nice things also, we have class, we are smart and respectful and so much more.. we are all not from the hood and even if we are some of us grow up. i’m from Detroit and yes i love my hood but i’m not of the hood give me a glass of your best white wine SIR.

  13. Black people dont know how to step out of their comfort zone. Its just not in them to do it. I am NOT a fan of the hood, I’m all about the multi-cultural experience.

  14. Jermaine sorry to hear the you lost your camera.

  15. there are places like that in the black communities but i don’t think it’s a lot of places like that that people know about.

for example when i was in school we used to go to this spot called Amen Ra’s and it was a lounge real chill and just a good time food. wine. hip hop. art some poetry. some plays some dancing. it accomodated everything.

i’m originally from Chicago and there are a lot of cool lounge spots there too you just got to be willing to go even if it does look like a whole in the wall on the outside.

as for the black community as a whole and why something like that is missing i think it’s because young people now want to be out and about to see who else is out and about because we (i will include myself in this to a degree) get caught up in the living the life lifestyle for example. maybe not so much with the tux but the partying the drinking the girls/guys. just the whole let’s wild out and party like a rockstar scene that it would almost be taboo to admit you want to go somewhere low key and just chill and vibe.

it’s the binary of doing what you want to do and doing what you think you should do to be noticed.

another thing is young black people sometimes have an agenda at the club. the club is like a hunting ground and if you looking for prey that’s where you go.

it’s a lot of reasons and at the very end of the day it could be lack of global perspective and a refusal to leave the comfort zone of what you know.

  16. @ Nikesha using the club as a hunting ground is not a black thing… that’s what clubs are for for the most part… ( yeah I know there is that segment of women who like to dance in a circle together.. but other than them folks are on the prowl.. in a black club, white club, asian club, mixed club).

Did you go to FAMU or FSU by chance??? LoL

But a bigger issue is the music, a lot of black folks are stuck on Rap/hip hop and a lil Reggae, as soon as the first House/techno/Brittney Spears song comes on a large segment of the young black crown leaves the dance floor, if not the club. I would say that a lot of the 25+ crowd is venturing off into other genres, but deep in the hood, and the folks who have never had the opportunity to see the world outside of their everyday little routine/hood have no interest in anything other than rap music. Until you are exposed to other music and you have an open mind to listen to other genres you will not be happy in a mixed club/ lounge. One of the LTL videos said it best when they compared MTV in the 80’s to MTV today. When I came up I had to sit through Gunz N Roses, Madonna, Def Leopard, Queen, to see Run DMC or LL Cool J. But now there is a music channel specifically for Urban music so kids today are not exposed to anything else, radio stations play one genre of music now, back when I was coming up in ATL, V103 played Old school music, R&B, Rap, House, etc… but now radio stations play only rap or only r&b… Folks today are choosing to paint themselves into a corner, as far as all types of arts are concerned. Schools are cutting out music and art appreciation classes so now kids don’t even get exposed to classical, country, or traditional music even in schools any more. If you grow up to be 21 and were never exposed to other music, why would you magically start? you have to have that little spark of ” yeah I kinda did like November Rain, or Like a Virgin… let me go check out some more of that music. Without the seed no tree will grow.

  17. Hi JD, First and foremost I love the site. I appreciate what you do. I want to ask you to take a look at your blog. Take a look at the entries written in CAPS versus the entries written in lower case. One can read the enries written in lower case better. I just wanted to point that out to you because I love and respect what you are doing. It is very unique to see somone of your status to take time out to inform the people of whats really happening around us. Also, I took your advice and went out on a work night and I had a BALL!!! Take it slow and I look forward to seeing you in Houston in the future. Peace and Love. One!

  18. Because We aren’t white!

Why must we hold ourselves to standards of another race. I enjoy new experiences and different scenes but what I dont enjoy is feeling that I’m somehow inferior to levels of white cultural because I’m not white. I know this is supposed to be about clubs, but there is a bigger issue at hand that became clear when I read your post. Black Americans and our entertainment as well as the way we celebrate is second to none.

  19. Is that why you always partying at the white spots???
Cuz I always see tons of white chicks hugged up on yall
Why not open your own spot like that for us???
Not the right economic climate right now..maybe in the future??

  20. Sometimes things are presented to our view because we are entrusted to see them into fruition..I am a 20ish believer and to be honest you teach me more than most individuals I’ve met in church. I love your realness and approach to life..I have implemented a lot of your methods in my leadership in church.. so its funny that people who would tell cats to not buy or listen to your music love and benefit from your inspiring me to be creative and effective. Go figure.. keep it up.. don’t know if you will ever read this but it feels good just typing it out…

  21. the reason that you don’t find spots like that i can sum up in 1 word.
    MATURITY!!
I for one love to see my black people mature and grow up. Those that haven’t need to graduate to a level that is more than just postin at the club or jappin out because we are trying to prove that they are that hard or that fly. Growing up is mandatory… Maturity is optional.

  22. Well I’m not a big fan of going to the clubs but the few times I have gone with my friends, the dance floor has definitely been packed. While I’m not much of a dancer (re: can’t dance), my friends are on the dance floor all night and they are not alone. I guess what I am saying is that I have been in a few clubs/lounges (or seen the pics) and there was not a shortage of people on the dance floor. I think the few spots you are going to have the folks doing the “celeb spotting” and thus no one will move to dance. Because unless the DJ is beyond wack, I always see folks dancing and having fun. I mean even the guys I know are out there dancing. And yes, we are all 20-something (soon-to-be) professionals.

On another note, I like a diverse group of music but I would be hard pressed to think of a non-hip-hop/r&b/reggae set that would get me on the dance floor. I need bass in my music and a lot of times, those other genres lack it. I mean, I really do love some “other” songs but I never listen to them thinking, “yea this would go hard in the club.” I don’t really see what’s so bad about not wanting to hear the whole Grammy nomination list at the club.

  24. getty up cowboy,jk jk kewt pic!!
my sister said she loves the boots^_^

  25. Have you ever been to noir or 255 tapas lounge on peters street by the auc? was the club u went to anything like those places? we have places in atlanta that are just chill spots. but, i didnt see the place u went to in L.A. So maybe the place you are talking about is on another level. but when i go to noir, 255 tapas lounge, and slice i feel like it is an upscale lounge place for black people. but i think we have plenty of upscale places for black folk in atlanta. oh, and dont let me forget strip in atlantic station. they attempt to cultivate an upscale atmosphere but, it is not an exclusively black night spot.

  26. UR A GOOD LOOK FROM HEAD 2 TOE! LUV YA!

  27. LOL not feelin those boots man…

  28. jd, there are spots here in atlanta. i co-promote an after work chill spot… STAR Lounge (Peters St) on Mondays 5pm-until. just “regular” professional folks, cool women and men, having drinks, good food, and a good time.

dont mean to plug. but i just wanted to show you that there are places like this. its just that most blk folks here, unfortunately, are caught up in the hype.

  29. IDK why we don’t have those spots, but if we do then someone let me know about it too. JD you gotta find some pics of the spot and post em so we can see that joint homey.

  30. Ooh wee dis one’s good too and close to my heart. First CONGRATS on the LA Confidential writer gig. I’m really looking forward to your articles and pictures. Now on to the topic., JD as you say, I fucks with this group called BlackNLA we do mixers around LA in spots like Delux, Nirvana, Life, etc. It’s a nice laid back vibe, beautiful people, just a great atmosphere. That’s BlackNLA.com folks. But we don’t have shit of our own for a couple of reasons.

    1. Too often the price of rent, liquor licenses, etc. Sadly, too many black start ups don’t handle BUSINESS well.

    2. Remember the Sunset Room? We crossed paths there couple of times. Great spot for Black Hollywood and grown folk to have a good time. What happened? Those that owned the building supposedly decided they wanted to upgrade the club and now it’s club Cabana right behind Ameoba music. Sunset Room crowd lost the ideal spot. Lack of OWNERSHIP of property and proper buildings to create a lounge. Which is even sadder considering all the black wealth in LA. Willie Lynch is still in effect!

    3. Fear ignorant niggas will tear the place apart. No matter the dress code, ignorant individuals come to the spot and fuck it up for everybody. That stereotype follows black club/lounge start ups every where they go.

    4. And if such a lounge did exist, what’s the cost to get in? Too often, prices and dress standards are raised to keep the riffraff out. And unfortunately the average person isn’t willing to spend that to get in or get all dressed up just to chill.
An if there’s no fee at the door, what RSVP list do you have to be on to get in? Some exclusive list like the one Xenii offers for a fee? The average bru or sista is not going thru a whole bunch of changes just to get in a spot

    5. Promotion. Especially here in LA you need celebrity presence to pull a crowd if the lounge has live music. You need a name attached to it. Even Sunset Room had celebs attached Tommy Davidson, Brian McKnight were regulars and often performed. Showcasing new talent alone won’t necessarily garner interest when looking at a flyer. Put a celeb name on a flyer or email blast and you may get a good crowd. But then again a lounge is meant to be relaxing. Too big a crowd spoils the atmosphere.

I got a couple more but I’m sleepy. You got the gist of what I’m saying. Holla at cha on twitter

  31. One more thing before I fall to sleep. Tag ur pics with a bigger font or put it in the center of the photo with a watermark, especially pics of you and celeb friends. Anybody with Photoshop or some other software could take ur tag from your pics and post them, re-edit them on other sites or flyers etc. You may not like the results. Make it more difficult to snatch ur pics.

And now that you writing for press, I suggest you get a Creatve Commons license for this blog. That way press can’t repost ur content without ur permission. Trust journalists are using blogs as research and not giving credit to their sources. This blog is ur press release of sorts and story hungry media types will snatch ur shit and make like they’re breaking news for the first time. Just thought I’d tell ya so you can protect your content here.

Peace! Please no sleep cam! lol

  32. Lend me the money and I’ll have one open by mid june…name it Ocean’s…think I’m playing?
