I do agree with you on that. I think if he did know, he would be trying to get things done a lot quicker (like you down by a field goal and its 1:15 on the clock left and you on your own 35 ) that’s how quick he would be moving to get things in order if he had any inkling of how real and deadly its getting.
I wish it was someway to get everyone’s attention on what was going on and maybe that would help us a people to start doing what we can that way we can help the government out.
Believe you me people on capitol hill are some what stuck in there own world. I say that cause the are so busy trying to fix everything as a whole and not working on one thing at a time, or at least assign different things . For example like if you ever was cleaning your house and you started in one room, but went to put something up in another room and you saw how messed up it was you would then start cleaning up that room, now you got two room messed. That is some what how things are getting.
So lets try to come up with a plan of action for us to help get the attention of the Government and lets do it fast

Well, yes the above is true. But let’s be real, our problems in the hood didn’t start with the economic crisis to begin with. The problem is with black folks’ psyche. People been illegitimately managing their money since we got thrown in the PJ’s way back in the 1940’s. It disgusts me that niggas always attempt to floss when they haven’t taken care of home yet. And this is the reason that so many of us are still stuck in the hood to begin with. Man if you know you have to buy diapers, and pay your light bill… ladies, why are you trying to grab a Louis Vuitton purse? People stuck in that same old slave mentality, and then wanna get mad when mess does not come their way. You do not see your average well off white dude going out and buying an abundance of cars, clothes, and whatnot that they don’t really need. Hell, most of them you would not even think they are too well off. Or if they are on the plight to GET there, they will drive the same raggedy hoopty until the wheels fall off to conserve their funds. If Obama really wants to help less fortune folk, he needs to put some funding into some damn seminars to teach these cats to prioritize and stay in your own damn lane. As far as him not knowing how “real” it’s about to get… I’m sure he does. He’s Harvard schooled, and anyone with two hands that can connect pointer finger one and pointer finger two can put things together. Rioting is at all nothing new… we’ve all read and heard about the LA Riots which were fueled over much of the same predicaments — IE job losses and then some.

I agree w/ Ocean. People have give Pres Obama time to get this done. He’s clearly working at it. Trying to get shit straight like he said he would. But as he keeps reiterating, it took us time to get here, and it’s going ot take us time to get out. He’s not a miracle worker, but he is a smart individual. He’s not making false promises and saying it’ll be fixed tomorrow. He’s keeping it 100 and saying it’s going to take a minute, but i’m working it.

And JD, what you say is so true. I’m nervous because kids are about to get out of school for the summer and have more time on their hands. Bored kids + no money = trouble. Not to say ALL kids in the hood are gonna be runnin around holdin up Bodega’s. lol But you get the point.

It’s happening everywhere, I think. This is a great topic to write about for the paper as an editorial. I too hope he is taking into account, the desperate measures that people are turning to as a result of this failing economy. Crime where I live, (Central Jersey) has always been at a low. However, within the past 6 months I believe it increased by atleast 10% from car jackings, robberies, and muggings. There are 4 malls within the vicinity of my house and all of them are having problems with people getting mugged at night and cars being broken into. One of the malls in Edison, turns all the lights off in the parking lots at night as a result of power costs and I personally, know of 7 people who have had their cars broken into and who’ve been mugged.

It’s of course, a sad situation when people are pushed to such limits but I think Obama knows what he has to do to encourage a change in the current economic status. So many people are complaining about his spending, that he is spending too much at the moment, but I feel his spending now will benefit in the long run and all of the other programs he is putting into action immediately, that people feel are unnecessary, are for the sole purpose of helping those who need help NOW.

In today’s society people want satisfaction immediately – everything is “supposed” to be instant. What a great deal of people don’t understand is that this situation, one that we haven’t seen in a long time, can and never will be solved instantly. I think more people need to realize the severity and learn to sacrifice. Obama said during his campaign that, even though he believes he is the one who can bring change to our crisis, he can’t do it without our help. That help is us having to be brave and dutiful enough to sacrifice to help out. We’re Americans and that is what we’re built upon. Over the years I think we lost that aspect as a nation but I think slowly but surely people will come to realize the tasks and journey ahead of us. No one said this road we’re traveling on was going to be straight and clear.

I don’t think the president knows because every hood is not the same. I leave in Houston Tx, the State Senate just passed a law where people with a license to carry a gun can now have them in their cars @ work. Now as many people that are losing their jobs…(in the words of Tyrone) “That’s not it” this is not a good idea. What’s stopping people from going to their cars and going back in to handle up because they upset they just lost their job. But it will get worse before it gets better.

I am impressed we are talking about some real stuff. By looking at all the flossing yall be doing I would think yall didn’t even know what is going on in the hood. We need more businesses to help employee more brothers out here. I have so many guys that have been to jail off of stupid stuff like weed and can’t get close to getting a job. A College education in Atlanta is just like you only went to high school. The people in our community that have funds to make businesses and employ others most of the time don’t have enough education to start successful businesses away from where they made their primary money or are just interested in being on the only one shining. I purchasee a house for 30K in Atlanta, the mortgage on that home with tax and insurance is about $400 a month. I rent it out for $1000 a month. That is $600 cash flow. With all the foreclosures in Atlanta, if I was a millionaire I would be buying up as much land as possible, these fools are still buying and flossing cars which depreciate as soon as they buy them, and flying around the country like nothing is going on, by the time the market comes back around the smart people would have made even more money. Most of the Artist and Athletes don’t know what they are doing. Musicians have a little advantage because if they own their publishing they will continue to make money, but the question is how many people are they employing? I think getting a regular job is the best thing a person can do before they get rich. Once you see how slow that money comes in, once you get some real money you will never go broke..

True respect comes from how many people you can help. When you die the only people that are showing up are the people that you helped. Obama knows. My goal is to one day employee 20 people so I can literally positively effect 20 generations. Jobs mean the ability to take care and provide for your kids. What’s your goal? Another plaque on the wall? LETS GO!!!

I think he understands and that’s why he’s taking an aggressive approach to stabilizing the economy. From my experience, crime always increases when the economy is bad. I just think that it hasn’t been this bad in a looooong time or maybe ever? Trust that the Gov’t will fix this because the last thing they want is to have to take care of all of these people. I was watching the news the other day and this car dealership closed in Michigan, and one of the workers who just got layed off, started beating the crap out of another employee who was out of a job too! Yo, I live in the hood in Miami(FL) and shit is hard out here. Even for myself(I’m a senior in high school) and my family, bills need to be paid, and no one is hiring. The only thing we left to fall on in the hood is serving or robbing. Niggas die daily, over dumb shit. Like a nigga will rob a nigga for a chain only worth 50 bucks. But what we as a nation have to realize, especially those in the hood, is we live IN THE HOOD. What do u expect. We struggle to make it out of poverty. Its all just a balance of life, and survival of the fittest. The rich rule the rule, while the poor dwell in its decision. I do believe that the rich should give back to the poor, seeing that some have piles of money just to wipe their ass with. But those in the hood have to strive to better themselves and make it out of poverty, because some of those others(the rich) came from the same place, JD being one of them, to living a life free of financial worries.

JD just like you, i too am with President O and the change revolution….but question I beg to answer is at what cause will this change come about? who gains to benefit from this change and who stands to get the short end of the stick? I commute via public transporation daily and it sickens me of the people being afffected by the economy. Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware that Pres. Obama isn’t to blame, but he needs to start being more upfront with us as far as his strategies and what is going to be done about the suffering. I am not from the hood so to speak, but I still see the struggle within the middle class. I will love to lend a helping hand and do my share to help out the people in my community, but I need help getting started. I will love to open some small businesses to provide employment for those without jobs, but even with that, no one’s willing to give me a business loan. WHAT’S UP WITH THAT? I live in “the hood” or….. well it’s a middle class neighborhood but whatever cause it isn’t the suburbs….. anyway, NO! Currently, I’m in my senior year of college and next year I’ll be in my fifth and final year. My younger brother is going into his junior year next year and my baby brother is going to the tenth grade. My mom is a school teacher so that’s blah but my daddy makes good money. He works in the oil industry. This is the most that I’ve seen my parents struggle (that I can remember) in my 22 years of life. It’s to the point where my parent are threatening about finishes school. My daddy is sort of rolling with the punches but my mama is really starting to bitch and nag. At first I was like she’s just tripping, but now I understand. As I approach graduation, I’m terribled that I would be able t get a job. So I’m on the verge of giving up. It’s actually sickening to think that when I walk across the stage, I won’t have a damn job lined up. UGH, this is a relief. random. lol…. Anyway…. And yeah, you’re right, folks are dying left and right. It’s scary! I just hope Barack it taking everything a step at a time and is prioritizing….. In the meantime, being poor broke and hungry ain’t what that is…. lol…. real talk.

I was in Vegas in January aand had my $750 peacoat stolen (with my iphone in the pocket)..FROM A BOWLING ALLEY at a brand new casino while i was bowling with my fam. Times are getting hard and it’s sad. I dont recall ever being robbed in my entire life. I was too through. Had to cop a iphone 3G when I landed back i NYC and Im hurt cause that rare designer coat can never be replaced..the store I copped it from went out of business (another example of bad economic times). -Kev

Well I believe that President Obama do know what is going on around the world and in the hood too,period. I think that since God chose him for this job, just like he did Moses, Abraham, Ruth, Sarah, Esther and etc, and I do believe that since he has a relationship with God, God is going to lead him in the right direction. But truly it is time for us all to gravitate to God and seek his face and know that he is God and he is the one who controls everything. Just because things seem to be going crazy, doesn’t mean that God is going to forget about us. We as people in general should be prayed up at all time and have faith. Just because we are in the world, doesn’t mean we are of the world. And people who believe and understand who God is knows what that mean!!! They have beefed up security at their businesses from employees and opportunist stealing. Also ; because we are minority owned, people are looking for minority owned companys just because of the Barack Factor and they don’t wanna seem like there not with the cause! From the hood perspective we have been doing a lot of Lost Prevention in
Malls and department stores which is basically non uniformed guards watching and protecting merchandise. it’s bad here in nyc. we always had crime and will always have crime but it seems more of an issue of frustration and desperation. bank robberies (straight fed time, point blank) are happening everyday several times a day everywhere. people are shooting each other left and right. it’s easier to get a gun than it is to get a job and i’m talking young cats: 12-19 year olds, males and females. they raised the price of cigarettes to $9 and about to raise the transit fare to $2.50 so not only are you pissed off that you’re broke, you can’t afford to buy smokes AND pay the fare to get to a job interview or a job training center. it’s cheaper to buy weed than it is to buy smokes! then they realize they can’t puff puff pass because they may get pissed for a new job or a p.o. visit but the frustration and depression cats out here are feeling is real. so they take it out on anybody they can. i’m seeing cats sleeping in the trainstations wearing prada boots and rock & republics carrying garbage bags with their clothes in it. i’m seeing elderly women asking people for spare change and it breaks my heart because that’s someone’s mother/grandmother/auntie out here begging when they’ve already paid their dues in life and should be sitting on a beach somewhere watching the sunset. i’m seeing panhandlers asking for dollars and not spare change, homeless asian women (seriously, where have you ever seen that?!) and even the bootleg dvd sellers are losing money. the only people who are still doing ok are the one’s selling untaxed cigarettes for $7 because people can’t afford to pay $9. recently, 2 brothers (a city sanitation worker and a city fire fighter) got busted for running a grow house (madd weed for the squares who don’t know) and they have city jobs but it’s still not enough to keep up with the cost of living.
everyone is hurting in 1 way or another up here.

I guess I would have to compare the recent crime rates with the recent unemployment rates before I blame everything on the recession, but when you see a story about a man taking his daughter with him while he robs a store…and telling the clerk that he’s out of work and his daughter needs to survive — its a pretty good indication that shit is that bad.
I’m lucky enough to have a job, but honestly I feel like I’m going to be stuck being a teacher for a while, because I’m afraid I won’t find anything else.
People have to take responsibility for their own issues though. People need to learn to save first then spend within their means and not live off credit cuz that’s just borrowed money. As far as the drug dealers and thieves go, though, would they not be doing what they’re doing if the economy was good?

I would like to give my perspective on President Obama. President Obama took office on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. It takes time. The previous administration (GWBush) had 8 years to set the tone for this disastrous turn of events in the financial infrastructure along with the lack of restrictions and oversights on the behalf of Wall Street. There is a process to having policies passed. The system of checks/balances has to be implemented to anything President Obama wishes to accomplish. He is ferociously working to get key items on his agenda passed that will make great strides in reconstructing our economy. I think President Obama is very in touch with the pulse of everyday Americans or the “hood” as you say.

The facts are the way washington works is almost always bad for the hood. There will be ways for the hood to make out but we will have to pay close attention. Every President creates ways for their people to make out we just have to make those ways work for us. They wont advertise it in a big way but trust it happens everytime. We must educate our people in the hood about these hook ups when they happen because Barak wont come on tv with the grand hood agenda. We have to help us we are all we got.

the president is trying to get us the money we need but it’s our elected officials ie: senators, congressmen, assembly members who are denying the money we need to put things back in order. these individuals are the one’s who are telling the president that they are not going to accept the funds because they don’t like the policy behind it and in turn it’s putting more people on the streets and out of their homes and jobs. our elected officials are holding up progress, not the president. and since no one in congress or the house of representatives is offering a back up plan or any suggestions to get the funding to their state, they would rather deny the much needed funds just to prove a point. the president is trying to make government more transparent for the citizens who elected these officials into office and that means the officials can’t get away with getting a little extra under the table without anyone finding out how corrupt they really are. these are the people who should be more concerned and more aware about how bad it is out here. these are the people making matters worse, not the president.

First off, this demon we call a “Recession” isn’t a “race” thing…….it’s an economic thing. WE, Black people got so caught up in the fact that WE finally had the “HNIC” that we totally forgot the “true” essence of what really was going on in the background of our foreground. As my grandmother use to say, “Never let your right hand know what your left is doing”. I heard commentators say that the Obama Presidency is historical……….I beg to differ! If we remember the “true” Black History lessons that we were taught (most real Black History was taught not in school, but by parents and others that were of the progressive-Black Power Movement of the 60’s & 70’s), the only roles that Black people were allowed to have in the White House was in a domestic capacity…..the “clean up” crew. What is Obama doing? Cleaning up the “others” mess. It is by no chance also that he is bi-racial. Weren’t they the “official house Negros”? Aside from habit, what we as a people need to recognize is that the tools needed to endure, survive, and maintain during seemingly disastrous times were long ago passed down to us. It has been our own obsession to mimic the “status quo” that has gotten our people to our current state. The Great Depression was a worldwide economic downturn starting in most places in 1929 and ending at different times in the 1930s or early 1940s for different countries. I remember the stories from my grandmother of how they use to embrace family and did everything as a unit to ensure their survival. There were no cable bills, cell phones, weaves, iPods, or any other wants. We have changed the definitions of what is a “need” as compared to a “want”. True change begins from within. Has Dr. King’s dream been realized? I would say No, simply because for that to be true would mean that the “Hearts” of the majority have been changed. Prejudice and racism are rooted in the heart and for that to change would require a spiritual awakening. Then and only then can one free their mind in order to allow their ass to follow. Vanity has historically been the fall of man. WuTang said it best…..cash rules EVERYTHING around me….dolla dolla bill yall! Our people have taken allegiance with the “beast” in his misguidance. What comes out of the man determines his worth. Real begets real……superficial begets superficial. It isn’t enough anymore to be “da man” on your block or in your hood. Your block and your hood ain’t shit in the whole global respect of things. Everything is a building block to something much greater than yourself. But those of you who are hell bent on still hangin’, bangin’, and slangin’ have to recognize that “Truth” starts on the inside. By confining yourselves to a 12 miles radius, “da hood” you short yourself the opportunity view the world in its totality. Life, isn’t isolated to ATL, Philly, Chicago, LA, Little Rock, Jackson, Brooklyn, Queens………Last time I looked, those were only microcosms with in a larger cosim, contained in an even larger cosim. No, you or I may not be a President or City Council Member, but we are still responsible for our own little “White or Black” house. Begin first with the house that houses your soul…….YOU! Then handle your own house………wife, kids, mother, father, grandfather, grandmother…….begin to heal needless wounds so that everyone is on the same page. A house divided cannot stand. If OUR forefathers were able to withstand the Transatlantic Slave trade, Jim Crow, Segregation, The Great Depression, separation, etc………………Then WHO IN THE HELL ARE WE TO COMPLAIN, GIVE UP, AND BE DEFEATED? The time is now for us to step back into our ORIGINAL MAN. We have come too damn far to let ourselves down.

Isn’t the “hood” used to tough economic times? I don’t understand the purpose of this post (This is not a slam on JD because I think he’s quite talented and intelligent). This isn’t something new cause the poor communities in South Florida have always been poor and violent. The housing and construction boom of the mid 2000’s completely skipped over these areas. You never saw any economic development or new jobs created here. The robberies and killings often pour into nearby areas depending on the time of the year. I also see that some many have become entrenched in counter-culture that they are doing the opposite of everything that could be elevating them.

I did volunteer work in an impoverished area in downtown Miami in 2004. I was shocked at how people in this community were living and it had NOTHING to do with being poor. These people were living in their own filth and refusing to do anything about it. How about sweeping the damn floor? Cutting your grass? Washing your damn dishes? How about getting some bug spray so roaches aren’t crawling and biting your children? Why are you giving your infant kool-aid? I was so disgusted at the blatant ignorance that I had to quit. There was no way to save these people. In fact, I wanted to take all of those children myself because growing up like this was going to destroy their futures. Madonna is running off to Africa to get a black baby? She needs come to Miami because they are many who are growing up in worse conditions.

Many of us who had the resources moved out and into new communities or bought our first houses. When you focus on your own financial and family priorities, you aren’t paying for outrageously priced bottle service at the clubs. I refuse to believe that most young black people are this immature, insecure and absorbed with material goods.

I admire JD for speaking his mind, but since he’s a self-made millionaire, he should be advising young folks on how to invest and build wealth. As a people we need to set better goals for ourselves instead of getting into VIP. How many times have we seen refugees or other ethnic groups come to U.S. and do better than American blacks? That’s because they stress education, spirituality, lawfulness and financial literacy in their households and communities. All I can tell people is focus on what is real and not some fantasy.

Obama is trying to hold it together but overall he is telling us that WE need to change our priorities. WE can’t afford to continue to go down the same destructive path.

I’m sure he has an idea. Maybe he does know and that’s why he’s going hard on rebuilding the economy! I FEEL..Bush really fucked us hard in the ass with no lube! I think Obama knows. It is terrible to see this happening. My job laid off 150 people last year…and I’m in the medical field??? J I don’t even go to the clubs anymore…it’s just not the same. Pray on change ya’ll!!!

It looks like there may be a turn around I work in Health Care Administration and I have noticed a large increase in request for charity care and increased Medicaid patients. I work in Michigan so you can imagen how rough it really is. It’s keeping me busy but the rest of the sector is hurting. If congress and the right wing republicans would stop bull shiting and pointing fingers and work together things may turn around sooner.
