RUN DMC INDUCTED INTO ROCK N’ ROLL HALL OF FAME

ON APRIL 4 RUN DMC IS GETTIN INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. THIS IS A CLIP OF BOW WOW TALKING ABOUT THEM AND WHAT HE’S LEARNED FROM THEM. WHATS CRAZY ABOUT THIS FOR ME IS FIRST THEY BROKE UP WHICH HAD TO BE THE BEGINNING OF THIS WHOLE HIP HOP IS DEAD MOVEMENT. IF YOU ASK ME NOBODY I REPEAT NOBODY HAD A BETTER LIVE SHOW THEN RUN DMC AND THERE RECORDS ARE TIMELESS. THE SECOND PART THAT’S CRAZY ABOUT THIS IS THAT ARTIST LIKE BOW HAVE NEVER SEEN OR BEEN TO A RUN DMC CONCERT. THE OLD SAYIN GOES YOU DONT NO WHERE YOUR GOIN UNLESS YOU KNOW WHERE YOU’VE BEEN. THAT HOLDS NO WEIGHT IN THIS CASE THESE KIDS DON’T KNOW THAT PART OF HIPHOP TO CONTROL IT. MICHAEL JACKSON SAW JAMES BROWN PERFORM AND ELIVIS!!!! USHER SAW MJ AND SO OWN, WHATS YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ?

  1. Run DMC are one of my favs hearing there songs makes me wish that I could have seen them live in concert….. Having them inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame makes perfect sense since a lot of their music incorporated Rock and Roll…. Big ups to Rev Run DMC and JamMaster J…

  2. My thoughts are the stament rings true, however I wonder if Bow’s mentor Snoop has ever seen a Run DMC concert, ponder this because if so then the same analgy used inregards to Usher would then apply.

  3. I agree with ur statement. I would have loved to see them in concert! Shout out to Janet!

  4. I agree 100% JD…ppl now a days look up to others, but haven’t seen them up close in personal where all the real stuff goes down. That may be what influenced such a HUGE change in the game right now. People don’t take me much for a hip hopper…lmfao…but i mean the game ain’t the same. You can’t listen to the radio and jam to every song like you used to maybe even as short a time as 5 or 6 years ago. I don’t kno what this change is, but it needs to change back…I miss my wonderful radio, my good lyrical content, my old school…lol, and my live ass hip hop…i’m only 17 by the way, but being raised on practically every genre (country, pop, club, rnb, soul, hip hop, rap, reggae, etc.) especially old school (my mom’s sugarhill gang cd is destroyed thankz to muah playin it out in middle school…as well as her two volumes of earth, wind, and fire.lol)…but yea.lol….i think that these ppl now a days need to link up with the greats and see how it really is done.

  5. The past conjugates creativity for the relevant future. Look at Michael Jackson for example, he was able to study Fred Astaire, James and other artists in addition to form his own style melodically and dynamically creative that made him the entity he still is today. (Invincible could have been promoted better…it was a greatly innovative album)

When will the music industry see those artists again. Do we see copycats today who can make catchy tunes without substance?

Substance is the key to success. Listen to Luther Vandross songs. They told you a story that could be interpreted from different angles.

I like songs that make you think and inspire you to become a better person. It’s okay to listen to songs that “make you feel good for a moment”.

People know songs that will transcend for generations to come.

(Prince’s “I would die for you or Baby I’m a star…I can listen to over and over without losing interest.)

  6. This statement JD said made me come from this angle stated above:

“THE OLD SAYIN GOES YOU DONT NO WHERE YOUR GOIN UNLESS YOU KNOW WHERE YOU’VE BEEN. “

  7. my father was a dj and ive been listening to run dmc since i was three and mostly i grew up listening to alot of artist form the 80’s and well as the 90’s so i’ m glad that i was born in the 90’s because i did atleast witness some part of hip hop which to me was one of the best times in music and that i’ m 18 i realize why people say you have to respect the past because run dmc really did their thing and real music never dies

  8. My comment is that JD you are absolutely right….. That’s why I’m so bummed right now about not being able to go see The wonderful talent that is Michael Jackson perform. I am very greatful for the fact that I was able to see Janet perform last September; WONDERFUL SHOW BY THE WAY, I’M STILL ON CLOUD 9 FROM THAT SHOW!!! SHOUT OUT TO MS. JANET YOUR AWESOME AND I WISH YOU THE BEST AND GOD BLESS TO YOU JD, AND JANET. We need more entertainers like this today. We need artists who can put out an album and have the WHOLE album; every single track; atleast half of the damn album be worth listening too and you should be able to still bump to that album for years and years; that is the definition of a TRUE artists.

  9. I grew up listening to RUNDMC and was blessed to see them in concert..Those were the days..
I still can feel that energy that those guys gave out, they gave to the us a part of their dream, their vision for their music and most of all they gave us our monies worth..and then some. Music today, is not really MUSIC..just trash..I find myself when I’m in my car, listening to CD’s and not the radio. I find myself reaching for music that has a meaing, music that can take you to a place of peace and fun times.. singers like..Mint Condition, New Edition, Karen White and of course my girl Janet.
I’m so excited and proud of RUN DMC and the legacy that they are leaving behind, hopefully some of these young cats get a tape and sit down and study what the greats before did and how they did it. If RUN DMC went on tour today, even in this recession, I would buy tickets because I know with out a doubt that I will be entertained.
    God Bless “09”

  10. yeah Run DMC taught dudes how to spit live on a mic and still be able to hear the words clearly. Congratulations to RUN DMC….its gonna be crazy at the induction ceremony..i gonna put on my adidas today homie…yuh

  11. 1984 freshfest..I seen the best of hiphop perform.even the dynamic breakers. What that concert did was expose the hiphop culture to the cities outside new york. Now a rap concert is just that ..a simple rap concert with nothing new being exposed.the freshfest was almost a religious experience and the artist treated the audience like so.bow wow being exposed to jd who was a dancer for whoudini on the freshfest tour most likely influences bow wow to understand those pioneering hiphop artist. Jd has a goldmine of knowledge and experience with the golden age of hiphop.those of us who do the artist around us appricate learning about the run dmc experience.I have been blessed to be around biggie in 93 puffy in 94. Then later working with snoop dre and pac. Then cash money millionares..whom all had a apprication of run dmc …now working with artist in atlanta especially the ones more focused on the commerical rewards of a ringtone or hit hook. They could careless bout history and it shows cuz they have no substance or know how to rock da stage or move the crowd

  12. JD
I CANT SEEM 2 POST ON YOUTUBE, SO HERE I GO POST’N HERE HOPE U GET THIS!!!
    WHAT KILLED HIP HOP.
-JAY -Z GOING AFTER NAS, THAT MADE OTHER RAPPERS & ARTISTS CHOOSE A SIDE.
    – 50 CENT GOING AFTER JA RULE, & BEEF’N WITH MOST OF HIP HOP.
    – WITH ALL THAT BEEFN, WE 4GOT ABOUT RAPPING.
    – ALL RAPPERS WANT IS THAT COMMERCIAL SUCCESS.
    – SO THAT MEANS NO VARIETY. NO LYRICS, NO SKILLZ, AND NO CONTENT.
    – RAPPERS ONLY WANT THE MONEY, CARS, CLOTHES, AND WOMEN.
    – NO ORIGINAL CONTENT EVERYONE SOUNDS THE SAME.
I AM A FAN BUT LATELY THIS THING CALLED HOP HIP I THINK IS A DIE’N BREED.

  13. Ll went after hammer. Pac vs biggie. I can go back to 80s battling never hurt hiphop as seen here nobody understands the art of the battle .what hurt the battle was it getting so personal to the point fans took it personal.like jd said this music biz is the only biz consumers and fans study and live off statistic..chart sales. Soundscan numbers..that killed hiphop

  14. Let me call you out JD, so go ahead and get ready to delete this one. I agree with you about RUN DMC, these young people don’t know the history, so that places more responsibility on people like yourself. Think about this. Run DMC, LL COOL J, The Beastie Boyz, and many others came out of the Russell Simmons era. Just like Micheal Jackson, Marvin Gaye, etc came out of the Barry Gordy era. What I am talking about here is leadership. Just because people can make hit records and just because they are rich doesn’t mean they are leaders and that’s where people get confused. Who are the leaders in hip hop? The record labels are just following whatever single is hot at the moment. It works for them because they don’t have to deal with kocky ass artist which they can’t control (Prince is a perfect example) so they don’t want to groom artists and make them into superstars. So the what’s the problem? THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP… Barry Gordy, Russell Simmons, LA REID, these guys had their time and hopefully have moved on.. (LA REID should retire) but who has taken their place? Who is young enough to still but connected to the youth; has enough power to make things happen; yet smart enough to know you shine brighter thought other people then yourself. JD you have the power to do it but do you have the ability? Leaders and Followers; Most people can’t tell the difference. Malcom X and MLK didn’t die with lots of money but they were leaders. Are you?..SPOCK

  15. i think sometimes the music business gets caught up in their own bullshit i mean sometimes i wonder where has music gone i remember when music was just music and thats all i knew and love which inspired me to want to be a song writer and a dj but now if u don’t put out or play certain shit everybody gets mad i just want artist to be original and start taking back what’s there’s it’s certain people in the industry that don’t need a fucking deal and how they got one is beyond me

  16. I think a lot of people commenting don’t understand the statement! Great artist are great because they studied great artist from the past!! Now artist study how much money and fame a artist has and are influenced by that and now we have no real standards to base greatness on but if u want to find standards of greatness look back at the past. It really is on us music producers cuz we study history of music and trends..even russell said they had to force run dmc to record walk this way…today artist are producing themselves. Its the blind leading the blind!!!!!!! Damn I need to be hired as a a&r lol

  17. I think you are 100% correct JD, Real talk. But i don’t think its just hip hop. Now im not saying music is die’n. But what i am saying there isnt a whole lot of artists out right now that are living up to those they have paved the way for them. And i feel thats with all music. And thats no disrespect to any artists out there. But if you really sit back and think about it. niggas was killin the game back in the day. You mentioned michael jackson. If you sit back and just listen to some of his shit like PYT for an example cuz everyone knows PYT. its like damn this nigga was on a whole another level for real. he was on some in to the future type shit.. and that was back in 82-83!! Now i know credit also goes to quincy, james ingram and everyone else involed in the track. but thats my point right there. there was so many great minds involed in that track and the result of it was pure fire. i mean to this day, there isnt 1 face that doesnt light up when that song comes on. And its the same with Run Dmc. They werent the only rap group. but if you ask me they were the rap group that took the game to a whole nother level. Music just aint like that now adays. There isnt that person or group taking it to the next level like them kats did. sure there are dudes that kill the track, singin or rappin.and there are kats that kill the beat. but it aint to often that u find them all working together to put out that fire. They are to busy beefin with each other and makin this shit a competition.and us as fans are just as much in the wrong for feedin into that bullshit.atleast thats my thoughts. shit im 23 and if you go threw my music you would mostly find straight old school music.I enjoy listening to it more. it aint about that bullshit. i mean dont get me wrong, i got love for the new stuff too.but that old school is that feel good music.i had that teddy pendergrass blastin threw the speakers this morning as a matter fact. but without sounding like im riding coat tails. im glad to see the oceans 6 working as one. to me thats the future. and thats exactly what i mean but having great minds working together to put out that heat. just watchin your videos i can tell yall got that real love for music. yea u guys fuck around alot. but i do the same shit while im making music. and if you are anything like me, thats when some of your best work comes out. so yea props to you guys and all that your doing for this love we call music.

  18. Bow Wow seems educated enough of them. Sadly that’s not the case for everyone.
For the advancement of hiphop I think everytime a rapper makes an album they should ask themselves” what have I done for hip hop today?” Will you affect a life positively, will you touch someone personally, will you be a voice for the unspoken. Okay you sold drugs, but can you tell us about it like Biggie or Jay or Beanie Siegel. Can you tell a story like Slick Rick or Pac, will you inform like Nas or Lupe, can you mix humor, materialism and reflection like Kanye, can you stay true and never conform like Rakim. Will you be remembered like Pun or Big L, can you flow like Snoop. stay melodic like Nelly, swag through music like TI, will you speak directly to young people growing up to be successful adults like Bow Wow, use metaphors like an english major like Fab or Lil Wayne? If a rapper can’t add something to the pot like that, then they need more life experience, school, rap education, or a new career choice.

I responded to the youtube with this :
I loved Naughty by Nature, they were my intro to rap along with Salt N Pepa, since I was just born in 87. I think hip hop should be taught in music classes. It’s poetry, it’s creative writing, and it’s culture. I think Vh1’s hip hop honors is a good look. Singers respect their past and do the tributes and stuff, relevant singers, but I heard some rappers didn’t want to do a BET tribute bcuz they thought it would make them look old themselves. That kind of attitude won’t work. Fantasia will sing for Aretha, Mario will sing for Patti, but rappers don’t want to date themselves…crazy. The ego in rap is horrible. Rappers do superremixes for sales and hype, but what about unity from the 80s and early 90’s, joining up just because. I mean at least Foxy and them tried “The Firm” and then there were those “Self Destruction” type songs. Rappers sample beats and rephrase or repeat former rappers words with no credit to the previous artist. They shouldn’t have to do that, rap fans should know. When I heard LBW “Thank you” , I got “ohhh that’s Rakim …the fish , favorite dish line”. Today no one knows when Jay is quoting anyone.

  19. theirs alot of a&r’s that are not doing what they are suppose to do and alot of record companies that aren’t doing shit either

  20. well to answer the question that JD asked about to know where rap is going run DMC influenced you and someone influenced there music so give me a king and someone to look up to and model my music after and hip hop itself will grow and get better

  21. JD I AGREE WITH YOU ON 100% ABOUT HOW YOU COMPARED NEW ARTIST TO RUN DMC. THEY HAVE NOTHING TO FOLLOW ANYMORE SO NOW ALL THESE SO CALLED ARTIST DO IS BEEF OVER STUPID SHIT, RAP ABOUT SHIT THEY DON’ T REALLY HAVE, AND DIRECT THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARTIST INTO THE WRONG PATH SO THE CONSTANT DOWN FALL OF RAP IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO GROW OR HAVE A GREAT POSSIBILITY TO.

ANYWAYZ THOUGH SHOUTS OUT TO THE OCEANS TEAM, DORMA DAVIS, EDDIE WEATHERS, ETC…… OH YEAH, I’M TAKING SO SO DEF ‘S “FREE AGENTZ” TO THE TOP THIS YEAR JD!

I AM THE KING OF 2K9 “PHOENIX SUNS” ALL DAY EVERYDAY!!! PS3 OR X-BOX

  22. I rarely comment on blogs but yours I had to stop and say Great Blog!!

  23. Run Dmc set the bar.like i said before. the were on another level. it didnt matter if they were on stage or their record was bein played on the radio. if u were comin up after them u better have come correct.i think what jd is sayin is that back then if u were an artist, you just didnt see Run Dmc as a group that was killin the game. u also saw them as the artists to be because they were so good, because you wanted the success they had.Beacause if you didnt come hard like they did,you wouldnt last. They were teachers without even knowin it. they paved the way for years to come. the question is, who is going to be the next run dmc and take control? their legacy is hip hop……..

  24. To me Hip Hop is not dead. You can never kill a substance. Hip Hop is Hip Hop what the people of today music is making is not Hip Hop but we branch/associate it with Hip Hop because that is all society see rapping or freestyling as. To me what we have today is a mix of Techno, Hip Hop & Pop mixed in one & since an artist have yet to create a name for this new sound we continue to call it Hip Hop.

So Hip Hop can not be dead but your comment on knowing where u came from is true & i noticed those who could not witness the past first hand only go off of imitation & imagination of how it was or FOLKTALE basically….that whole word of mouth thing.

  25. Saw Run Dmc in concert at a club when they reunited..years ago..the show was awesome..Ppl were still giving them their props..Is hip hop dead? umm not really because Hip hop is a type of music…a type of dress…a culture in its own..I dont think hip hop is innovative as it used to be tho ..old skool hip hoppers did their research they Knew the culture..thats the problem today tho, these younger artists dont research therefore they really dont understand the hip hop culture..Is it dead ? no but its not as fresh as it used to be!

  26. AS A YOUNG PERSON (I’M ONLY 22) I UNFORTUNATELY ONLY EXPERIENCED A VERY SMALL PIECE OF HIP HOP BEFORE IT STARTED TO TAKE ITS TURN. I WASN’T OLD ENOUGH TO TRULY APPRECIATE THE GRNADMASTER FLASH’S, THE RUN DMC’S, OR SO ON. HOWEVER, I DO AGREE THAT THE ONLY WAY WE CAN TRULY KNOW WHERE WE’RE GOING IS IF WE SEE WHERE WE’VE BEEN. I’M THANKFUL THAT I HAVE REACHED BACK TO THIS MUSIC AND ADDED IT TO MY PERSONAL COLLECTION, NOW THAT I AM OF AGE TO TRULY APPRECIATE IT….I THINK KANYE TRIED TO REINTRODUCE THE MUSIC OF OLD BY REINVENTING THE SAMPLES FROM OLDER ARTISTS. JD HAS ALSO DONE THIS EVEN WITH THE NEW BOW WOW SONGS LIKE “YOU CAN GET IT ALL”. SONGS LIKE THIS MAKE ME WANT TO TRACK DOWN THE ORIGNIALS AND LISTEN TO THE SO I CAN APPREICATE THE OLDER SONGS AND NEWER ONES EVEN MORE. CREATIVITY IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS AND THE ONLY THING CONSTANT IN LIFE IS CHANGE, SO NATURALLY WE HAVE TO DEVELOP AND MOVE ON….BUT ICONIC GROUPS LIKE THIS CERTAINLY ARE DESERVING OF THEIR ACCOLADE FOR PAVING THE WAY FOR NEWER MC’S

  27. What up JD, I was in 7th grade when i went to see The Raising Hell Tour with LL Cool J, Whodini, Timex Social Club and RUN- DMC headlining. That show changed my life and made me start rapping. I became a true hip hop head and i was buying hip hop artists tapes like Doug E. Fresh, The Fat Boys, Beastie Boys, Whistle, U.T.F.O., and many others. I seen hip hop change through the years and i must admit i still love and miss the The Golden Era of Hip Hop (87-94). I started djin in 89 buy watchin and listening to djs like JMJ(R.I.P.), Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jeff, Dj Scratch, and Dj Cash Money. Those are my roots so I gotta pay respect to those djs and artists like RUN- DMC who helped put an underground artform on a worldwide platform. I’m happy that they are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I just wish JMJ was still alive to see it happen. These new artist need to learn their history and understand that hip hop is a culture and not all about sex, drugs, and money. They really need to be creative and bring some real substance to the table.

  28. i didn’t even know they had broken up…damn where have i been?
    anywho’s-
i hope they can work it out. we need or legends to show these young knuckleheaded thundacats out here how to do thangs! :o)
music is a mess right now!!! JD i know you’re only one person but dammit music needs you a lot more!!
    KEEP WORKING HARD!!!
    GOD BLESS
    ~chynna~
